Magnificent Agony by Katie Mettner @KatieMettner

Title: Magnificent AgonyAuthor: Katie MettnerGenre: Contemporary RomanceExpected Release Date: April 19, 2016Cover Designer: Carrie Butler at Forward Authority Design ServicesHosted by: Lady Amber's Tours Blurb:
Eve Darling has learned one very important lesson in her twenty-six years; life never goes according to planThe night of her high school graduation her heart was bursting with hopes and dreams for the future, but the universe had other ideas. Instead of New York and culinary school, she stayed in Magnificent, Wisconsin. Barely an adult herself, Eve was irrevocably tasked with becoming a mother to her big brother, Davis, the man with the heart and mind of a five-year-old boy. Now, eight years later, she’s become a successful entrepreneur, chef, and businesswoman. All of those responsibilities came at a price and her personal life was payment. No one was more acutely aware of that than she was. And then, with one phone call, everything changed. ‘After life organizer’ Abraham Von Sallage was like no funeral director Eve had ever met. He was young, charming, witty, and had a unique perspective on life, because his business, was death. They both carried burdens society couldn’t, or wouldn’t, acknowledge, and in those burdens, they found an instantaneous connection. That night, as Abraham stood in the doorway of her cooking school, she saw hope in his eyes. And then her world crumbled. An inexplicably cruel twist of fate calls into question everything she knows about life, and death. With her soul adrift in guilt, she clung to the only person she could trust to save her from the agony her life has become. Shrouded by grief, it would take the love of one man, and the resolve of an entire community, to show her just how magnificent life can be. Katie Mettner writes inspirational and romantic suspense from a little house in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. She's the author of the four part epic family saga, The Sugar Series, The Northern Lights Series, the Snowberry Holiday Series, Kupid’s Cove Series and The Magnificent Series. All of her books are written against the beautiful backdrop of the Midwest and are a mix of new adult romance, romance, and romantic suspense. Katie lives with her soulmate, whom she met online at Thanksgiving and married in April. After suffering an especially bad spill on the bunny hill in 1989, Katie became an amputee in 2011, giving her the much needed time to pen her first novel, Sugar's Dance. With the release of Sugar's story, Katie discovered the unfilled need for disabled heroes and heroines! Her stories are about empowering people with special circumstances to find the one person who will love them because of their abilities, not their inabilities. Katie has a slight addiction to Twitter and blogging, with a lessening aversion to Pinterest now that she quit trying to make the things she pinned.

Magnificent Agony on Amazon USMagnificent Agony on Amazon UKMagnificent Agony on Amazon CA PrologueThe town of Magnificent doesn’t understand why at twenty-six I’m single with few friends, but then they don’t see the sacrifices I’ve made, and continue to make, for Davis. Those sacrifices are worth it because Davis is the only family I have, and he deserves all my attention. But sometimes I wish others in town would see the late night trips I make to the home to calm him down when he’s sick, the hours I spend trying to track down liquid medication for a grown man who can’t swallow pills, the countless hours I spend keeping my business in the black so I can pay for his care, or the guilt I feel every time I leave him to be cared for by someone else. The people who flippantly judge me aren’t the ones who look in the mirror every single morning and question whether they’re doing the right thing. I glanced at my brother out of the corner of my eye. His face had relaxed into a peaceful expression as he stroked Spot’s head. Whatever, or whomever, had possessed him to go out into the night had disappeared and left him tired. I fought back the tears that constantly pricked at my lids whenever I was with him. Tonight they were there because I knew I had to take the next step and find him a new home, someplace where he couldn’t wander away because he wants to see Mom, me, or simply because he wants to play outside like any five-year-old would.I shut the car off and climbed out, taking a few deep breaths on my way around the hood to his door. I yanked up on the handle harder than necessary, but frustration from exhaustion was rearing its ugly head. When the light came on inside the car, he looked up at me, startled. “I don’t like it here,” he whispered. “I want to go home with you.” “Davis, you know how much everyone loves you here. There’s Mrs. Littlestead, Mr. Sawyer, and Grandma Sue. What would they do if you weren’t here for them to watch Clifford with?” I asked, coaxing him out of the car.He stood and clapped his hands, his fear forgotten. “Will you read me a story and tuck me in, Darling?”I locked the door and took hold of the belt loops on his jeans, something I had done since I was a little girl. I steered him towards the front door as a sigh escaped my lips.“Yes, I’ll read you a story, Davis,” I promised while a tear slid down my cheek. My name is Eve Eleanor Darling and this is my magnificent agony. a Rafflecopter giveaway

Amazon: http://amzn.to/1Se07zT Chapter 1Isobel gripped the microphone and let the rhythm of the music take over. On cue, her mouth opened and she began to sing; softly at first then louder as the drums and the bass guitar came in. She opened her eyes and heard the people nearest the stage gasp. It was the white contacts, but they weren’t part of her overall costume. The powdered oversized hairdo and  heavy make-up with pink accents plus the tight, hot pink, silk, brocade bodice, the matching short pannier  skirt with fringe and matching heels all fit her French rock band À La Mode’s look.Their music was gothic rock with a touch of 70’s glam. As Isobel sang, she made love to the microphone. People left their shows excited and turned on, which added to the vibe of the crowd. She shut out the world and released all of her pain and agony when she sang. Toby played drums behind her, wearing his own oversized wig and a pair of tight pants. His body was powdered and adorned with piercings and tattoos.  On her left was Johnny who played guitar and on her right was Jenny, Johnny’s twin, who played bass. Both dressed in high French eighteenth century fashion with a modern twist. When the set was done, Toby got up and went to Isobel, holding out his hand. She gave a slight curtsy, took his hand, and bounded off the stage followed by the twins. Their groupies oooed and aahed around them as they made their way to the bar. “Madame,” Toby said, pulling out the barstool.“Merci, mon cher,” she replied, sitting down. “Isobel,” a man called, making her turn.  “Will you take a picture with me?”She looked him over. He was dressed in the usual Goth attire; black and more black. “Why, yes,” she replied and got up from the stool.  He pulled her close, and she put on a fake smile as he snapped a selfie. She kissed his cheeks then shooed him away. Other fans began asking her questions, mostly about the group’s eyes. The twins had burnt orange colored eyes, and Toby’s were sky blue. Eyes of their family line. When Isobel left the house she had to wear her silver contacts to cover her brown eyes. She smiled, she laughed, and she teased them sensually, as was her way.  Finally she sat at the bar. Toby removed the wig.“The usual?” Roy the bartender asked. They all nodded. “You didn’t have to take that picture,” Jenny said.“Oh, but did you see his ruffles?” she smiled and tried to hide her teeth as much as possible. She had used much of the energy she had, and she was hungry. “I’ll be back. I need to use the restroom.”“I’ll go,” Jenny said.“No, it’s okay. I need to call Vilem anyway.”Roy set down a pitcher and four glasses. She managed to make it to the bathroom on legs that didn’t feel steady. Something was off. She flipped down the toilet seat and dug out the vials hiding in her bodice. She usually only needed one but pulled out both; tonight, she needed a double shot. She popped the cork, tilted the vial, and let the warm red liquid slide down her throat. The copper essence filled her senses.  She finished the one then looked at the other vial. She popped the top and slammed it back as if taking a shot. Her energy returned quickly, but something was still wrong. She looked at the stall, not really thinking as she looked over the graffiti: Samantha was here, John’s a dick, and her favorite, I love bacon. She flushed the toilet and went to the sinks. A trickle of blood had run down the side of her mouth. She licked at it quickly before anyone could see.She threw the empty vials in the trash and washed her hands. She left the bathroom and made her way back to her friends. They were discussing their playlist for tomorrow. “How is Vilem?” Toby asked as she took her seat. “Being Vilem.”“My father would flay me if I called him by his given name,” Johnny said.“Vilem never seems to mind,” Jenny said. Toby poured her a beer. She took her glass and guzzled the drink. “Always the lady,” Toby said. “You all right?”“I’m fine.”Roy came back with the bar phone. “Izzy, your father is on the phone.”“You didn’t bring your phone?” Toby asked.“I forgot,” she said and took the phone. “Father?” She listened quietly. “I forgot it. I know. Yes.”“Well, what did your father want?” Jenny asked.“You are the only girl I know who hates cell phones,” Johnny said.“Vilem wants me home. He received word of relatives coming to visit.”Toby choked on his beer. She looked at him as he cleaned himself with a napkin. She looked at the twins; their eyes were wide staring at her.“What?” she finally asked.“You do know that your relatives don’t believe in our way.”She shook her head. “Vilem has told me very little of our relatives.” “You need to have him tell you about them before we say anything more.” Jenny put her cup down, her hand shaking slightly.  She was scared. Izzy had known them for over one hundred years, and Jenny only shook when she was frightened.“Why are you scared?”Jenny shot her daggers. “I am not scared. I am a guardian.”“Look, let us enjoy the night,” Toby said.“Excuse me,” a man said, and they all turned to look at him. He was tall and lean and had muscles where they counted. He wore a tight pair of pants and a loose fitting shirt. “Toby, I am a huge fan. I want to buy you a drink.”“I would love that. And what is your name?”“Jorge,” he said, clearly nervous. “Well, Jorge, sit here next to me and let us have that drink.” Toby spewed sexual mojo causing Isobel to roll her eyes and turn back to her drink.“We may have another problem,” Johnny said, looking towards the door.Izzy closed her eyes. She had sensed the darkness as it came in. Blood, sex, frustration, and anger; most of the dark guardians wore the scent as if it was their only skin. She sat straight up on her stool. She knew who had come in even before looking. He was heading straight for her. Aengus always walked with a purpose. He had an air about him, as if he owned everything and everyone in his path.  He wanted to own her. His shoulder length black hair made his skin luminous, which made his maroon eyes glow with evil darkness.   He was closely followed by his cronies. All wore black, had ebony colored hair and wore white makeup.  They looked the part of traditional vampires, but they were far more sinister. All of them, except for one, were guardians, dark stone guardians at that. They lived only on human blood. All stone guardians lived off of blood but the light guardians, who still lived by the Goddess, consumed only animal blood. Dark stone guardians defied the Goddess and drank human blood, since she valued them more than any other creature. Human blood had made them dangerous and a bit insane throughout the years, and with each generation, it seemed to get worse.Aengus stopped in front of her. “I missed your band. I apologize.”“Accepted, now please leave,” she said.“It is moon. I am free and bound to court you. Will you accept my offer?” He leaned in. The darkness that clung to him always called to something deep inside her. Yet she could not stand the man. “Again, I will pass. You might want to court one of your own kind.”“But you are my kind,” he bent down, whispering against her ear. “I know you feel it. I have seen it in your eyes.  Be my bride.  I will show you such pleasures, and you will never look back.”“No thank you,” she said.“I am then calling you to circle,” he said, pulling away. “I have talked to the council. You are expected in an hour, since you did not accept my proposal.” He turned and left with his group.Izzy stared after him. “Trouble,” she said, her French accent heavy as the others stared at her. What they did not know was that she was speaking to Vilem. Fear bit into her. She had opened the tie to Vilem. Aengus has made a blood challenge.  In an hour, she whispered to him in her head. She looked around at her friends.“It is okay to be frightened,” Jenny said.“I would have wet myself,” Johnny said.“Plead to the council,” Toby said, taking her hands. “He has no reason to call you into challenge. Plead to the council.”“We should get going,” she said, still in shock. She could feel the feelings of others, anger and more fear.  She looked around the bar and listened to the beating hearts. The smell of blood in their veins called to her.  Humans. They had no idea how easy they had it. She had been alive for over six hundred years. Tobias, from what she remembered, was two hundred years younger than her. The twins were going on four hundred years old. However, they weren’t the same. He was a fourth generation guardian, and she was an abomination, or rather, a vampire.

I stepped out of the car and a blast of hot, muggy, Louisiana air hit me, causing a sheen of sweat to instantly appear on my skin. The breeze didn’t do anything to help matters, it only made things worse by catching my hair and making it flutter around into my eyes.My guns were both drawn as I moved out from behind the car door to face the men who awaited us at the bridge. They had blocked the entrance into New Orleans with their trucks and stood in front of the vehicles with their assault rifles aimed at us. The men were in military uniforms, right down to the Kevlar and flack vests. Dark sunglasses covered their eyes, but the dragon tattoos on their right cheeks stood out, prominently displaying their loyalty to the Vampire Council. I counted eight men in uniforms. There were six of us, but that didn’t mean anything when we were up against assault rifles. It looked like Alice was going to have to do a lot of the heavy lifting for us to get out of this one.“Set your weapons down and put your hands in the air!” The loudspeaker guy repeated. I knew better than to look at my comrades, a good Hunter always kept her attention on the target. We had known this was coming long before we arrived, so we were somewhat prepared.I felt more than saw the shimmering bubble of Alice’s shield silently slip around me. I knew without looking that the shield was large enough to cover the whole group.Drew and Luke stood to my left and Gavin was directly behind me. Alice, Oscar, Zander and Christina were to our right, having pulled Zander’s truck up on that side of the Escalade. It had been decided ahead of time that none of us were going to part with our weapons. We couldn’t chance losing our only guns since there was no way for us to get any more at the moment. “Now!” the loudspeaker guy demanded. None of us complied with his repeated order, so the next order was to his soldiers. “Fire!”The noise was unbelievable, I’d never in my life heard anything like it except for in the movies. The soldiers pulled the triggers on their weapons and I wanted to cower, but I forced myself to stay put and not to move. I knew everyone else was doing the exact same thing. We had to trust Alice’s shield. Milliseconds later the rounds silently lodged themselves into the invisible barrier, then dropped down, ending their assault with the pinging sound of metal against pavement. I stood behind our protective shield, watching the bullets stop mere inches from me and then fall to the ground. Holy crapola, of all the crazy stuff I’d seen and done in my short lifetime, that was the scariest. “What the hell!” one of the soldiers shouted, obviously confused as to why we were all still standing.Again, we’d anticipated their moves. We knew that there would be a stall when they realized that their guns couldn’t harm us. Gavin took that as a cue and stretched out his arms, palms facing upward. He closed his eyes and tilted his face to the sky. Mistaking Gavin’s pose as a gesture of surrender, the soldiers resumed their shooting. These guys were making it blatantly clear that they didn’t want prisoners, they wanted death. What Gavin was doing, however, was far from surrender. The gently moving waters of the river suddenly began to quake and shift, rising into waves as Gavin’s power took hold. The soldiers were too intent on us, their targets, to look around them and see what was happening. So they didn’t see the giant waves growing high into air on each side of the bridge. They continued to shoot at us despite their confusion. “Keep firing,” the loudspeaker guy ordered. The other soldiers glanced at each other, but followed direction. The shield held, withstanding the force of all the gunfire. I watched the waters rise up into the air and hoped to God that it would continue to hold. I glanced over at Alice and found her standing calmly with her eyes closed, blocking out the world around her so that her concentration wouldn’t be disrupted. If her concentration fell, so would the shield. The waters around the bridge had finally reached about thirty feet high when Gavin lifted his arms straight up, reaching to the heavens. The huge waves of water suspended there, waiting for Gavin to tell them what to do. Then, grunting like he had been holding all the weight of the water, Gavin swung his arms downward, his whole body lowering into a kneeling position as he did so. The water crashed down onto the bridge like a tsunami. The soldiers in front of us didn’t suspect a thing as the river water fell onto them with its full weight of thousands of pounds.   A cry of triumph resounded from our small group, myself included. I raised my guns into the air and yelled right along with them as we watched the soldiers disappear into the murky water.Nothing so magical had ever happened to me as watching all that water hit the shield. It was like being inside of a fish tank. The entire world vanished, aside from what we could see in the bubble. Thank goodness, Alice had included the vehicles within the protection of the shield. We waited for the area to clear, watching the water slide down the outside of the barrier. The time it took was probably less than one minute in real time, but it felt like freaking forever to me. Gavin had returned to his normal stance, but was gently moving his hands and forcing the water over the bridge to clear the way. When the majority of the water was gone, I visually searched every inch of space I could see, hoping that the wave had taken most of the soldiers with it. But, the first sign of life that I saw was an angry soldier trudging toward us. He had no weapon, most likely having lost it when the wave hit.“Drop the shield,” I ordered.I heard a sigh of relief as Alice let the shimmering bubble fall, exposing us to the soldier and any others who happened to be out there. For me, there was always a decision when it came to weapons. I had my fire, which was a constant inner force begging to be let out. So, as this man steamrolled toward me, I felt the urge to roast his ass. Instead, I pushed back the fire and raised one of my guns. He was in full military gear with the flack vest and Kevlar helmet, so I aimed for the neck. Again, the remorse of killing a human being and not a vampire sat heavy in my stomach. I didn’t like this at all, not one little bit. But, like before, this guy was going to kill us if I didn’t do something. Kill … or be killed. That was the bottom line.

Accidental Drowning has been optioned for a possible movie adaption by a Hollywood producer.
Bo Granger loses his job as the manager of a country club golf shop and turns to flying his private drone as a pastime.
Accidentally he captures video with his drone of a woman being murdered by drowning. Bo is torn over whether or not to turn his video over to authorities. He is afraid of reprisal by the person who owns the mansion where the drowning took place, and he worries that his invasion of privacy will derail his wife’s campaign to become governor of California as she is defined as a state legislator by her privacy platform.
Bo endures a series of misadventures as he wrestles with doing the right thing. He is nearly shot to death by a goon hired by the dead woman’s husband, he’s falsely charged with sexual assault by his wife’s housekeeper in a dirty politics scheme, and he gets involved in a torrid romance with a female newspaper reporter who is determined to get the story of a lifetime
Excerpt
The line of club members was out the door. Sequoia Country Club’s pro shop was under siege from filthy-rich golfers—club initiation fees had recently topped three hundred thousand dollars—wanting the newly arrived, multicolored umbrellas. Part of the reason for the unusual customer demand was a steady rain that had swept across the peninsula in the early morning hours. Another was the genius of shop manager Bo Granger, who’d paid a meteorologist out of his own pocket for a long-range forecast the week before. Even though April was still considered the rainy season in the Bay Area, he’d gambled on a big storm hitting precisely on the morning of the club invitational, which boasted a field of 150 golfers. He’d ordered three-dozen of the splashy Leroy Neiman–like designer umbrellas that featured a well in the shaft suitable for housing airplane-sized bottles of booze. He’d been smart, too, in sending e-mail notices to all members announcing his upcoming rainy-day special. Bo figured the huge run on club merchandise was going to be a hit with his new general manager.
Bo had been with the club a little over four years. He’d felt secure enough in his position to warrant this bravado with the umbrellas. Even at a discounted seventy-five dollars a pop, he stood to rake in sales of $2,700 if he could unload three dozen. It was not yet nine thirty in the morning, and he’d sold twenty-four.
Bo was well regarded by the majority of the club’s 550 members, most of them Silicon Valley millionaires. In addition to being a shrewd buyer and mover of golf merchandise, he was very likeable. He had a way of making every club member who came into his shop feel special—especially the good-looking women. He’d almost married one of the better-looking ones, Sally Anne Perkins. She was the daughter of a venture capitalist and had graduated a few years back from the prestigious Stevenson College in New Hampshire with a degree in “green anything.” During the time Bo dated her, she didn’t work; in fact she’d never had a job—didn’t need one with Daddy’s money. She mostly stayed at home and watched game shows. Despite her abundant free time, she didn’t volunteer much—the annual beach cleanup along the San Martin County coastline being the exception. After dating for a year and a half, they broke up. Sally Anne had caught Bo tossing recyclable materials into the garbage yet again. She took a picture of him in the act and posted it on Instagram with the tag, “Should I marry a man who’s this insensitive to our carbon footprint?” She received 547 responses saying no.
Bo got his name from his younger sister. She couldn’t say Robert—it came out Bobo—so his parents went with the abbreviation. Bo’s personality was pleasing. He’d been brought up to be liked by Elaine, a housewife, and Steven Granger, a Walgreen’s pharmacist. “Pleasing people will get you further in life than any degree,” his father had preached. Life with Elaine and Steven was vanilla. Steven made him join the Boy Scouts; Elaine made him play the piano. The most childhood excitement Bo could remember was a road trip to LA where he and his sister, Bobbie, were treated to entire days at Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.
Bo attended Lowell High School in San Francisco, where he failed to distinguish himself as either an exceptional student or athlete—although he did play number three on the golf team—but as a senior was voted Best Personality over a guy who went on to be a nationally recognized comedian.
Bo attended San Francisco State and got his BA in business in four years. It wasn’t until his junior year that he figured out what he wanted to do with his life. He played for State’s golf team and set his mind to becoming a PGA instructor after he graduated. He figured he could make a good living at it and be exposed to beautiful women who were eager for him to teach them the game. Part of that reasoning was fostered by his good looks. His dark, wavy hair, movie-star-like strong jawline, and penetrating hazel eyes had served him well with college co-eds. He’d left a trail of brokenhearted young girls behind him at State. One of his rejections was good-looking enough to land spots in two different national TV commercials. “I dated the Chick-fil-A girl,” he was proud of saying.
Unfortunately, Bo never reached his goal of being a PGA-sanctioned teaching pro—three times he’d failed at putting together the requisite successive rounds of eighty-two or better. That was the golf world’s equivalent of “three strikes and you’re out.” His last opportunity to qualify was at the California Club in South San Francisco. Bo had carded an eighty and an eighty-two on his first two rounds. He was confident that he could post one more round under eighty-two—too confident. His premature celebration the night before his final round did him in. He wasn’t normally a cocktail drinker—he mostly stuck with beer—but the vodka gimlets he was offered by a fellow competitor’s caddy in the club’s bar went down way too easily and too often. By eight o’clock that evening, he had to be carried into the men’s locker room, where club members constructed a bed out of bench pads and left him there to sleep it off. It didn’t help that Bo had an eight o’clock tee time in the morning. It was the par-three, two-hundred-yard twelfth hole that killed him. Sitting at seven over par through eleven holes, he was just three strokes under the dreaded eighty-two-stroke maximum.

As I stared down at my phone, I wondered when or if I would ever see Parker again. I scowled. A pang of regret and guilt hit me in the chest, and before I had a second to sort through what I was feeling, a dark shadow blocked my sunlight.I was almost afraid to turn around. Overhead, the two hawks cried in rapid succession, sending out a warning. Whoever it was had them up in arms.“I was surprised to see you alone, but then I saw your babysitters.” Apsyn dropped down in the sand beside me. A pair of pink shades was situated on top of her head, chestnut locks cascading around her oval face.I let out a breath of relief. “Oh, thank God. I thought you might be a hallow or worse.”She laughed. “Well, that’s a first. No one’s ever mistook me for a ghost. And what could be worse than the dead determined to make chop liver out of you?”My nose crinkled. “I could think of two.”She placed a slim finger to her lips. “Let me guess. Zane and Zander?”I shuffled my shoes, burying them into the sand. “Bullseye.”“I don’t see how that’s a dilemma. It sounds more like an opportunity.” Her mischievous smile twinkled. “Want to trade places?”“If it was possible, I might actually take you up on it.”“You like to run?” she asked, eyeing my gear.My lips quipped. “Nope.”“Got some excess energy to burn? That I understand. It will get easier once you learn to control your powers. I bet one of your dilemmas might be able to help you burn through it.”I felt my cheeks start to stain pink. Not because I was embarrassed, but because I was envisioning what it would be like to throw all this amped up energy into lip locking with Zane. “I’m trying to avoid a catastrophe, not enflame it.”She dug her fingers into the sand behind her and leaned back. “My way sounds more fun…and it looks like you could use a little fun. I doubt you’ll have much time to yourself soon.”“I don’t remember signing up for summer school, but it looks like I’ve been enrolled into reaper combat and the history of banshees.”Her glossy lips arched. “I enjoy a little one on one.”I just bet she did. Aspyn was the type of girl who was sexy without even trying. If I did or say half the things she did, I would look like an idiot. “I’m going to suck at this, you know,” I said, thinking about how much I was going to embarrass myself. “I possess no athletic skills whatsoever.”“Kissing is a sport. I bet you’re good at that.”My eyes narrowed. “Is sex the only thing on your mind?”She stretched out her legs like a lazy cat. “I’m an eighteen, unattached, hot female. Obliviously, it’s all I think about when I’m not thinking about destroying souls.” a Rafflecopter giveaway

Ultimate betrayal leaves Hawk, the president of an outlaw motorcycle club, distrustful and hating women. He only wants them for one thing now, and once he’s satisfied his animal urges he casts them aside without a second thought. But then Audra shows up, a curvaceous redhead on the run he can’t seem to resist.  When a threat to his club and his way of life involves her, Hawk has to make a decision to turn the sexy, pint-sized package of trouble loose, or claim her for his own.
EXCERPT
I quickly scooted out of the booth, realizing that Hawk was right behind me. Before I could question him, he grabbed my arm and proceeded to jerk me in the direction leading to the back of the bar. I glanced around the bar wildly, but I didn’t see Dane’s men anywhere.
“They left, but they’ll be back.” We entered a dark hallway, and halfway down he stopped us at a door. I expected him to knock, but instead he lifted his leg and kicked the door in, causing the occupants in the room to scream out in fear. “Out!” he snarled.
I barely had time to acknowledge the naked couple before they snatched up their strewn about clothes and rushed past us. As the man passed me I recognized him as one of Hawk’s men. We made eye contact long enough for him to wink at me. Once they cleared the threshold, Hawk pulled me inside and slammed the door behind him.
“Take your clothes off.”
“What?” He had to be kidding.
“Take your clothes off.”
I know that my jaw dropped at his demand. When I realized that he meant it I began to back up, slowly shaking my head. “You’re crazy!” I whispered sharply. Okay, maybe I had removed my shirt in the restroom, but that had been of my own accord, and he’d said “clothes,” as if he meant everything.
“Take your damn clothes off.” So far he hadn’t moved from his spot, yet I’d backed up until my back was against the wall. “Those men knew how to find you, which means there’s a bug on you somewhere.”
I tried to decipher what he was saying, but my brain wouldn’t wrap around the idea that he thought I had a bug on me. He took a menacing step toward me, and that was all I needed to do what he wanted. Strangely, I wasn’t afraid of Hawk, only of what having his hands on me would make me feel. I was attracted to him in a strange way that left me confused. Maybe it was because I knew that he wasn’t attracted to me, and I looked at it as a challenge.
I quickly removed my hoodie and handed it to him, kicking off my shoes at the same time. As Hawk began going over it I unzipped and rolled down my jeans. I quickly began to unbutton my shirt when a memory reminded me of something.
“Just a minute.” I waited for him to look at me. “There’s no way there can be a bug in these clothes because they aren’t mine. I took them from a laundromat.”
He hesitated for only a second. “I want everything.”
Deciding not to argue with him, I finished with the buttons, removed my shirt, and threw it at him. He caught it to his chest and I swear I saw the tiniest curve of his mouth that revealed that he was amused at my irritation. He examined my clothes thoroughly, finding nothing, as I expected. Then he turned those dark eyes on me, running his gaze up and down my body and missing nothing.
Leaving me hot.
“Everything,” he demanded. “Or did you borrow your underwear, too?”
No, the underwear I had on was mine, a thong Dane had purchased from Victoria’s Secret, and the only thing that he liked me to wear under my clothes. The way Hawk’s gaze moved over me turned me on when it shouldn’t have. I was no stick figure, my short height gave me curves I’d spent half my adult life hiding, until I’d realized that some men liked meat on their women. The coffee eyes on me now revealed that Hawk was no exception.
I swung around, wondering if I would be able to remove my thong, which was silly when I thought about it, because my backside was completely naked to him right then. I pulled it down, catching Hawk’s hiss when I bent slightly to work it over my knees and down my legs. I tossed it over my shoulder in his direction. Completely nude, I reached for the top sheet on the bed before facing him again.
“Satisfied?” I nearly swallowed my tongue when I saw that he still had my thong in his hands. There was no way a bug could be hidden in that tiny, see-through thing.
Hawk’s expression was savage. Something strong and basic had come over him. He reminded me of a bronze statue, solid and strong, powerfully intimidating. I was a prisoner, held captive by the intensity in his eyes. Slowly hand moved upward to his face, pausing right beneath his nose. His nostrils flared, and his eyes closed, as he crushed the bunched thong and inhaled deeply.
Ohmygod, I’d never seen anything so compelling, so erotic. Lust slammed through me, flushing heat over my whole body. I held my breath and watched his eyes open slowly, lazily, revealing the truth. He was aroused. No, scratch that. He was ravenous!
“Toss me your shoes.”
What? Was I reading him all wrong? Seeing something that I only wanted to see? But then, everything I’d learned during my short acquaintance with Hawk came back to the surface, reminding me that he ignored his emotions, and his body’s cravings. I didn’t think that he was afraid of letting go, he didn’t strike me as a weak man, but as someone who thrived on absolute, total control. That made him very dangerous.
I grabbed my Valentino sneakers and tossed them to him. He caught them with one hand. He examined them thoroughly, frowning when he came to the pyramid studs decorating the side. One of them appeared to be loose and with little effort he was able to remove it. He held it up for me to see, but I had no idea what he wanted me to acknowledge.
“It’s decoration.”
He shook his head. “It’s GPS.”
About the Author

I’m a grandma who writes smut. I'm also a mother, daughter, aunt, friend, and sister who discovered my passion for writing at the ripe old age of ten. Before I received my first manual typewriter, with pencil in hand, I would jot my stories down on notebook paper. Later, after receiving that desired typewriter at the age of thirteen I spent hours in my bedroom, where my parents thought I was doing homework.I was born in Maine, where most of my family still lives today. However, most of my life I've lived in Florida where I attended school, married and raised my daughter.
Writing is a hobby for me, and even though I've retired from Disney it remains a hobby. I'm happy to be just making enough "mad money" from it to be able to keep my cats fed, travel a little, and spoil my grandchildren.
For a while (many years actually) life got in the way of my dreams. A few years ago, with the encouragement of my family, I decided to get serious and I haven't looked back!
