Release Day Blitz! The Case of The Dead Dowager by @JudithLucci! #RPBP #ASMSG #Thriller

Retired homicide detective Michaela McPherson and the aging Countess Dorothy Borghase team up again—this time to match wits with two serial killers stalking children, women and the elderly.
When Dottie Borghase's friend Camilla Rothrock collapses at a lunch gathering of old friends, the countess's only concern is to dial 911 for help. But Camilla's subsequent death has authorities buzzing about international safety and retaliation, because her son is decorated U.S. Army General Stuart Rothrock.
As other restaurant patrons in Richmond meet similar fates, Michaela and Dottie join forces with the Richmond Police and the FBI to track down the pair of heinous murderers. But in order to catch the killers, they will put their own lives and the lives of others in in serious jeopardy. What Price Must a City Pay to Keep its Citizen's Safe? How about an excerpt:
Dottie turned off the main highway and headed south to Blackstone Virginia. Madame Toulescent lived just outside of Blackstone and that's where she conducted her psychic readings. She wished away the butterflies that cramped her stomach. She had a sense that what she was going to hear wasn’t good. She wished she didn't believe in the value of psychics or the unknown but she did, and that was that. She’d seen psychic readings and prophecies come true time after time during her life. Mic wasn’t a believer at all but had grudgingly admitted psychics had helped them in a case about ten years ago.

The speedometer on her car registered over sixty miles an hour on a forty-five mile limit stretch of highway. I'd better slow down. The last thing I need is a Virginia state trooper on my tail. She braked and her car skidded but she handled it skillfully. The Cadillac was a big, monster car but she really liked it. Since Dottie had lived in the US, she had always preferred German-made cars and previously owned multiple Mercedes Benz. Of course, when Count Borghase had been alive, they’d always driven Italian cars, mainly Ferraris. But now she was pretty much American and she loved her Caddy. There was something about the Cadillac that was so plush and so American that she bought a new one every couple of years.

She saw an old gray mule in the pasture out of the corner of her eye and saw the fence that was lying on the side. Dottie didn’t know what she’d do if they ever repaired that fence. She’d been looking at that fence on the ground for years and it was her landmark just before she turned onto Madame’s private road. She knew her turn was just up ahead. She slowed for a farmer carrying a load of hay in an old truck. He was hogging the entire road. Now where in the hell am I supposed to go? She steered her big car to the side of the road as far as she could without falling into the ditch. She cursed and held her breath as the farmer passed her. She swore the farmer missed her by less than an inch. The old codger hadn't even looked her way. She shook her head and cursed again softly. She threw her white Caddy into first gear and roared out of the ditch spewing gravel, dirt, and mud all over the road. She saw three rabbits running for their life and hoped she hadn’t interrupted their nest. Dottie drove a little further and made her left turn. She turned right on the first road and started the difficult trip along the horrible, rutted road to Madame Toulescent’s tiny home. The road was almost a mile long. Dottie's tall, thin frame bounced all over her plush leather seat and her hair fell out of her neatly arranged bun. I'm going to have to take a pain pill. All this jumping around is killing my hips. Secretly Dottie new she needed to have her hips replaced but there was no way she was willing to do that, at least not while she could walk. I wouldn't be able to help Michaela. And then, what would she do?

Madame Toulescent waved at Dottie from her front porch filled with flowers and beautiful hanging baskets of petunias and begonias. Her small white cottage was immaculate. Madame Toulescent watched her painstakingly steer her huge Cadillac down her battered road. Dottie brought the iron beast to a stop, looked in her rearview mirror and re-pinned a piece of white hair that had worked its way out of her perfect updo. Even though the Madame lived in a house that was little better than a house trailer, Dottie had been trained from birth to always look perfect when visiting. This task had become monumental at age 82. She reached for her purse and checked to make sure her Glock was nestled in its special pocket. She checked her lipstick in the mirror, pinched her lips together, cursed the fine lines around her mouth and got out of the car.

"Hello Madame Toulescent. Thank you for seeing me today on short notice." Dorothy smiled her gracious smile at the psychic, showing her beautiful white veneers, once available for a large price from the famous, dentist-to-the-stars Dr. Michael Smirkowitz.

"You are so welcome, Countess Borghase." Madame Toulescent looked around the empty fields and through the trees and gestured with her arm. "As you can see, there is no waiting line. Please come in. I've made us some tea." She paused for a moment and said, "Watch the steps. They're in need of repair," she cautioned.

In need of repair, my butt, they need to be rebuilt Dottie climbed the rickety steps dodging rusty nails and wood splinters. She grasped the loose railing and posts that held up the old front porch. The last thing she wanted to do was fall and break something. She followed Madame Toulescent into her small but neat and cozy home. There was a wonderful scent in the air and Dottie’s mouth watered.

"Please have a seat in the easy chair," the Madame offered. "I'll bring us some tea and sweet bread."

Dottie nodded and smiled her thanks as she carefully studied Madame Toulescent. She wasn't sure of her nationality. She thought she was Eastern European but she seemed very much like the French and her house had several amazing pieces of French country furniture. In years past, she had asked the Madame about her former life, but the psychic seemed unwilling to share her past. Her voice had a strange accent Dottie couldn't identify which frustrated her. Dottie had traveled the world and she knew the languages and dialects of most ethnic populations. But she couldn't figure out Madame Toulescent’s origins. That puzzled her.

Madame handed Dottie a cup of herb tea. The aroma alerted her senses and she immediately felt more awake and inspired. The tea had given her energy and awareness. She took a sip. It was delicious.

"Oh my, Madame Toulescent. Whatever is in this tea? I feel a million times better just from smelling it. You’ve got to tell me where you got it because I know Cookie would love it too," Dottie gushed as she sipped her tea.

Madame Toulescent smiled and said. "I made the tea. It's a blend of ginger, mint, lemon verbena and a few other things I grow in my herb garden. I'll send some home with you. It's sweetened with honey I collected from my bees yesterday." She smiled briefly, and her lips stretched over teeth that could benefit from a cosmetic dentist. "That's probably what you love so much."

Dottie nodded and studied the Madame. The years hadn't treated her so well. Dottie didn't know her age but her face was a mass of wrinkles that blended one into the other. Dottie guessed each wrinkle had its own story. Her skin appeared soft but deeply creased. Her jet black hair was streaked with gray and hung freely past her shoulders. She wore a simple blue shift with a silver belt and wore tennis shoes and socks. She smelled of lemon and freesia.

Dottie, as usual, smelled of Chanel #5. "It's so lovely out here, Madame. Do you ever come to town?"

Madame Toulescent shook her head. "Very rarely. My neighbor collects my groceries for me when I need them and as you know, I have a huge vegetable garden and I can and freeze most everything I need. I like it here and I like to stay with my animals - my dogs, cats, cow, mules and horses. It's quiet here and my love is nature."

Dottie nodded. She couldn't imagine staying in these four walls every single day. She supposed she didn't have the patience and gentleness of spirit that the Madame had. But that was okay. Dottie was very happy in her own way.

The two women shared a comfortable silence and continued to sip their tea until the Madame asked, "How can I help you today, Countess?" She smiled at her and said, "I can tell you have some significant things on your mind and that you are troubled."

Dottie put her teacup down and said, "Yes, I do. Have you been watching the news?" Dottie saw the woman pale under her sun-darkened skin.

Madame Toulescent nodded. "You’re here about the poisonings, aren't you?"

Dottie held Madame’s dark eyes with her own and said, "Yes, I am. Camilla Rothrock was one of my dearest friends and I need to know who poisoned her."

Madame shifted her gaze to the floor and said, "Countess Borghase, this is a very bad business that is happening. I've had some visions and they are upsetting. It reminds me of the evil work of Hitler in Germany."

This time it was Dottie who paled, her heart beating so hard she could hardly breathe. "Oh my God, Madame. We both remember his devastation in Europe and the millions of people he murdered."

Madame Toulescent rubbed her hands together, her face grim. "Indeed we do. A sad and sorry time. Let's move into the back where I work and see what we can see."

Dottie stood and followed Madame to the room in the far back of her modest home. It was a glass room with beautiful views into the forest. She left her teacup on the coffee table. Her heart thumped dangerously in her chest and she was short of breath. She was so terrified she almost lost her balance. She gripped her purse and cell phone in her hand. She was scared and just the idea of having the Glock made her feel safer. Could the evil be so strong it permeated her soul?

“Countess, why are you so upset? What can I do to help you?” Madame Toulescent looked at Dottie with concern.

Dottie stared at her but her eyes said it all.

“Let me get you something to calm you down so we can have a good reading. Please stay in the chair and I’ll be right back,” Madame Toulescent said as she left Dottie and walked to her kitchen.

Join bestselling author, J.A. Culican on an epic fantasy adventure fans and critics are calling a world of magic, and comparing to Robert Jordan.

“Let’s go.” Jericho commanded, clearly displeased with my train of thought.
I nodded and followed after him, but my mind still raced. What would happen now? How was I supposed to protect everyone? As we strode through Ochana, I looked around at the other dragons, mostly Siens, who had no idea they were in any danger. The dragons laughed and chatted like it was any old day, and any old time, not one fear. They continued on with their usual activities; setting up and running their open-aired market stands, puffing out large flames of fire with their mouths so they could cook meals for each other, flying low in pods as they soaked up the glory and beauty of Ochana.  And each of these dragon’s lives were in my hands. I needed to get my head on straight.
“Finally.” Jericho stated.
It was only one word, but enough to blaze a fire inside me. If this were all true, I had to find strength. I needed to train. I needed to know what I was up against. I turned to Jericho as we walked through town. “What other creatures can wield mahier?
“Only dragons. But there are other creatures that wield different forms of energy. Depending on the creature, each have their own names, but in human terms, I guess you would call it magic.” He shook his head in nausea, as if he detested human words for dragonic considerations.
“These creatures, what are they?”
“We need to focus on the others that would help the Carnites. There aren’t many, Carnites on their own are easily defeated, and not easy to form an alliance with. But two creatures come to mind, farro and elden. We need to make contact with them. Get a sense for what they’re worth-”
We arrived at command, which interjected Jericho’s vocal declarations. I thought about the farro and elden. I had never heard of them, ever. I concocted all sorts of images for what they could look like, maybe large brown beasts with razor sharp teeth and monster claws, the kind of evil creature that would haunt a small child’s nightmares and make them too frightened to rest their head on a pillow ever again.

At least we knew where to look for these magical imps, but what would happen when we found them?

J.A. Culican
Featured Book: The Keeper of Dragons, The Prince ReturnsHi all!! My name is J.A. Culican. I am a mom of four, a teacher and I write YA fantasy novels!
How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing? I’ve always enjoyed writing. I published my first novel The Keeper of Dragons just last year. The reactions I’ve received from fans all over the world has been amazing! I decided to publish this book particularly for my kids. My oldest begged me for the book. So of course I wrote it for her.
How did you come up with this storyline? It was a story I made up as a bedtime story for my children. It evolved from there and The Keeper of Dragons was born.         What inspires you to write? My kids, and their love of all things magical.
How did you conduct your research for The Keeper of Dragons? It’s purely a fantasy novel, so not much research was needed. I did have to double check geographical facts around the world. Those facts I double checked by visiting the country or cities websites.
Favorites from The Keeper of Dragons: My main character is relatable. He is just an average/typical 18 year old. Who wakes up one morning and finds out that nothing about himself is typical.
What would your friends say is your best quality? Laid back. I’m a go with the flow type of person.
Are reader reviews important to you? Yes. Obviously it’s great when someone loves you books. On the flip side when I receive a negative review it gives me a chance to reflect and grow within my writing.
What is your writing process? I just write. I don’t outline or plan. I literally just sit down and go.
What do you do when you don’t write? I am at teacher by day and a mom to four kiddos. I am also the President of a non-profit organization Puzzle Peace United. This organization helps families with children on the autism spectrum. www.puzzlepeaceunited.org
If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be? I’m just like everyone else!

Wow, thanks for having me! To find out more about me, check out my website www.jaculican.com.
J.A. Culican is a teacher by day and a writer by night. She lives in New Jersey with her husband of eleven years and their four young children. She spends her evenings at home, with her family, watching Harry Potter and Star Wars. When not home you can find her at the soccer or field hockey fields, rooting her children on.
J.A. Culican's
inspiration to start writing came from her children and their love for all things magical. Bedtime stories turned to reality after her oldest daughter begged her for the book from which her stories of dragons came from. In turn, the series, The Keeper of Dragons was born.

By Darkness RevealedbyKevin McLaughlin @KOMcLaughlinAward-WinningandInt'l Bestselling Author

Ryan Blackwell thought to escape his magic by burying himself in the military college at Northshield, Vermont.
But Northshield University has a secret: a nexus of magical power that people will kill to possess.
Hiding his power becomes impossible. Instead, he finds himself in the midst of a deeper and more dangerous sorcery than he has ever encountered before.
Things spiral out of control, and soon only Ryan's wit, will, and the talent he once hoped to leave behind stand between a nightmarish creature and everything he cares for.

There is more to Ryan than meets the eye. But even with the powers he controls, can he stand against this darkness, or will it swallow him whole?

CORPORAL BERSETO pounded on my door that night. I was half expecting something to happen, so I hadn't been sleeping well anyway. I popped out of bed, hit the floor and started slipping sweats and sneakers on as he entered the room.“Drill Sergeant wants to see you, Blackwell,” he said, then ducked back out into the hall.“Be right there,” I replied. I tied the second shoe and stood up. Berseto was nowhere to be seen when I got to the hall. I crossed and knocked on Fletcher's door, but got no answer. I knocked again, louder. Still nothing. Well, he had asked for me, and I was starting to get nervous. I took the knob in my hand and tried to turn it. Unlocked. I opened the door and peered into the room. The lights were all out. I could see someone sitting on the bed in the gloom, but that was about it. “Drill Sergeant? You OK?” I asked, reaching toward the light switch.“No lights,” he said.“OK” I retrieved my hand and stepped in, leaving the door open a crack for some light. “You called for me?”He sighed, then seemed to shake himself a bit. “Close the door,” he said, turning on a small bedside lamp. I thought I could hear a little bit of a slur in his s. Had he been drinking?I looked him over as I shut the door and stepped nearer. He was sitting on the bed, both feet planted to the floor. Dressed in civilian clothes, sneakers – so he'd been out somewhere, most likely. His face was down, only partly visible to me, but he looked pale, very pale. His hands were shaking.“What happened?” I asked, keeping my voice soft.“We have parties in the wood line, you know. The upperclassman do,” he said, looking up at me. “Something we do.” I could smell beer on his breath now. Northshield was a dry campus – no alcohol allowed. But it was no surprise that the older cadets had found ways around that. I nodded.“I was out there, hanging. Been a tough week. Wanted to kick back. Good way to do it.”I nodded again. He was rambling, but I wanted to let him talk this out, so I kept quiet.“We had a little fire. Nothing big. Staff doesn't pay attention to what we do out that way, down by the river.” He drifted off into silence.“So what happened there?”“I went to take a leak in the woods, away from the fire. I stepped out far enough to be in the dark, and took care of things. Turned around to head back, but... I couldn't go. I couldn't move. Felt it out there, watching me. Hungry for me.”A chill rolled down my back. “Hungry for you?” I whispered.“Hungry,” he repeated. “I couldn't move, and I could feel it slipping closer. Couldn't see it, but I could feel it rolling in nearer.”I remembered every moment of my experience earlier that day in vivid detail.“Then I saw it.”I blinked, looked at him again. “You saw it?” I asked. He shouldn't have seen a spirit being unless it had somehow covered itself with something solid. Or unless he had Sight himself, which I was pretty sure he didn't.He nodded. “It rose out of the brush in front of me, all inky black. I could see it by where it blotted out the campus lights behind it, and where it blocked the stars as it rose above me. I felt like a mouse in front of a cobra. Then I managed to scream, and ran back to the fire.”He took a deep breath. “The guys razzed me about the scream, asked if I'd run into a man-eating raccoon. I was too shook up, they were too drunk. Didn't know how to explain what I saw, so I stood there by the fire for a long time, hoping it wouldn't come near. It didn't.”“So then you came back here?”He nodded. “Yeah, couple of the guys were coming back to barracks, so I walked with them. Strength in numbers, right?”I wasn't sure numbers would really help. This thing had made itself visible, not as a wind or even as a fire, but as something else. I didn't know what. But if it was able to be seen physically, I was pretty sure that meant it was incredibly powerful and incredibly dangerous.“Drill Sergeant,” I said. “We need to get down there, get those people out of there. We've got to get them back into barracks. They're not safe. How many people were at the fire when you left?”“Maybe a dozen?” he said.Might be enough to give it pause, I thought. But maybe not, too. “Come on,” I said. “show me where. We'll think of something to get them back to bed.”“They'll be fine, Blackwell. Let it be.”“With that thing still out there? They'll be tasty treats.”“I don't know if I can go back out there,” he said.“Listen, I ran into something earlier. Sounds like the same thing you saw, and it almost ate me, too. But I beat it. We need to stop this thing.”Fletcher looked up at me then. “Why didn't you say something?”“Because I thought it was just after me. But it's not – it sounds like it's just hungry and looking for a snack. Which those drunk kids are going to give it if we don't hurry.”He got up. Once he was moving, a little determination seemed to go a long way. He was getting some color back, and looking more sure of himself. For that, if nothing else, getting him to help was a good idea. And he'd seen this thing once and yanked himself away. I knew from experience how hard that was. Fletcher might be a bigger help than I'd guessed. We went to a light jog when we hit the hallway, and moved down the stairs at speed. Not recklessly fast, but a taking two at a time in a steady pace. We were side by side when we reached the bottom, neither of us winded. Some advantage to all the PT. The doors out onto the parade ground were double, and we each hit one, still moving fast.Neither of us were really in a hurry to see this thing again, but I didn't know how much time we had. We'd barely taken three steps from the building when that question was answered – not enough.Gunshots thundered in the darkness, coming from a ways away. I counted six shots, then nothing.
“Those were from the woods around the party,” Fletcher said. “Come on!” He took off in a sprint, and I picked up the pace to follow him. As I ran, I reached out, drawing magic into me.

Kevin McLaughlin
Featured Book: By Darkness Revealed
Hi and hello! Very excited to be here with you today. For those who don’t know me yet, I’m a Boston writer of science fiction and fantasy. I’m an amateur astrophysicist and play with swords in my spare time as well, so my hobbies line up really well with my line of work. When I’m not hitting friends with sticks, I might also be sailing. Or writing. More often the latter than the former, but I enjoy both.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing? I came by writing naturally: my mother made me do it. No, not quite! As a kid I used to fall asleep listening to my mom writing fiction at her typewriter, tack-tack-tacking away while listening to some movie soundtrack or another. Taking up the craft was so natural that I wrote my first short story at age 7. It took second place in a local writing competition. I’ve pretty much been involved in telling stories in one format or another ever since.  How did you come up with this storyline?             By Darkness Revealed is close to my heart, because it’s personal. I went to Norwich University as a cadet - that’s the well I drew from to paint a good picture of cadet life for the protagonist. Obviously the ‘Northshield University’ in the story is a fictional place, but much of the feel I captured in the story was drawn from the real college. As for the storyline itself? Again, a lot of it is drawn from reality. No, people were not actually slinging bolts of magical energy around campus (not that I was aware of, anyway!), but the real world Norwich is an unusual place with all sorts of magical legends and tales.  What are the best and the worst aspects of writing? For me the best part is telling the story, hands down. When I get into a really good flow state, I might be typing as much as three thousand words an hour. Just letting the story spill forth onto the screen. Those moments are a bit like singing, or dancing, or sailing, or martial arts forms… It’s like meditation where the mind is active and burning at full speed. Where you have complete focus on the task and everything is moving in synchronicity.  The worst part? Edits. We hates them, my precious. When I’m done telling the story, I am *done* telling the story. I don’t really want to read it over for errors and nit-picking bits. I do, of course. And I have a great editor who finds what I miss. But this is my least favorite part.  What inspires you to write? I like telling stories. I really like telling stories for a living. I really, REALLY like running my own business telling stories for a living. There’s no other career out there which I get as much satisfaction from, where I feel so complete working. If I wasn’t writing fiction, perhaps I’d be making up stories for film or for video games or something else entirely… For me the telling of exciting stories is more central than the medium I use.
How did you conduct your research for By Darkness Revealed?I cheated. I do this often.  Writers have two choices when it comes to research. They can set a story someplace they have never been, in a land or culture they don’t know at all - and then have to research the heck out of it. Or we can write a story set someplace we either know really well, or which we are making up entirely. Or both. For this book I did both. I set the book at a fictional university in a fictional town, and then painted the fictional place with real-world experiences from a similar place.  So, I cheated. No research. Zip. This is how I write most of my books, actually.  What is your favorite quotes from By Darkness Revealed? One of my favorite elements created just for By Darkness Revealed is Kittybreeze. She’s a little air spirit with very feline traits. When I was young, someone wrote a wonderful short story for Dragon Magazine that I adored about an old wind mage who was looking for an apprentice. The girl - who ended up getting the job - was overjoyed by the cute “puppy breeze” that the air mage had as a pet/servant. The boy scoffed, saying that must be the least of the spirits the master controlled. The master replied that sometimes you need to measure worth not in terms of power, but instead with regard to faithfulness, trust, and long years of loyal service.
I loved that story. Still do. Kittybreeze is something of an homage to that author. (I just looked up the piece. It was “Master of the Winds” by Sharon Lee, back in Dragon Magazine #84.)  What would your friends say is your best quality? I would not presume to ask. I’m rather blessed with a few very good friends. I like to think that I add as much value to their lives as they do to mine. Being a friend is a give and take sort of thing.  Are reader reviews important to you? Is this a trick question? *chuckle* If I say no, then I encourage no one to ever review me. If I say yes, then I am paying too much attention to them…  I read every review of every book I have out. I listen for comments about what people liked, and what they did not. I strive to use my reviews as a tool to grow and learn from. I do not generally respond to reviews directly, but rest assured I read them all. Even the harsh ones! Because there is certainly something to learn there as well, even if the lesson was simply that *that* book did not reach *that* reader in a pleasing manner.  As writers, when we stop learning and growing and improving, it’s time to hang up the keyboard. Reviews are one such tool for growth.
What do you do when you don’t write? What is this “don’t write” thing of which you speak? *laugh* I write almost every day. I’ll cross half a million words of new fiction this year. A little secret? (Whispers:) I’m shooting for a million next year!
I love taking long walks through Boston with my fiancee as well. It’s not unusual for us to walk five miles on a nice day, sometimes as much as ten. Just exploring, seeing the city, the people, the places. Boston is always in a constant process of endless change. It’s fascinating.  I fight with swords - steel and rattan alike. In armor, thanks. It’s my current martial art; I’ve done a few other martial arts in the past, but lately I am finding it harder to keep even this one up. I spend time with my children, who are growing bigger and older each year. I want to make as many memories with them as I can, so I will have things to cherish as they outgrow their youth, although hopefully not their childhood.  Tell us about your other books? The Blackwell Magic books are six titles so far. There may be more books about Ryan Blackwell coming in the future, but for now I think the series may rest a bit. I’ve also written three novellas called in a mini-series called “Raven’s Heart” set in the same universe. I have the rough outline of an epic fantasy series as well. If it comes to be, then it will very much interest Blackwell fans.  I’ve also written a few science fiction books - four so far in the “Adventures of the Starship Satori” series, and two in the “Accord” series - "Accord of Honor" and "Accord of Mars”. I tend to write science fiction set in the near future, using technology and society just beyond where we are today. “Over the Moon” is a science fiction romance which could take place just five years or so from now. Perhaps ten.  If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be? C.S. Lewis once said “Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.”
I believe that same sentiment applies equally to grownups.
We hear so much about the darkness of the world, these days. We read about the cruel. We see videos of the unjust. We are deluged with stories of the most horrific elements of human nature. But that is *not* all that humanity is and can be. I write stories about people who have failings, and make mistakes. Yet at the end of the day they strive to overcome those things and act in a heroic manner. To show the best part of what it is to be human. My heroes are there to shine light on our better natures, and to give us all hope that we can be better than we are.
Thanks for having me! This has been fun. I hope readers enjoy the boxed set enormously. If anyone has questions about my work, please do drop me a message via email. I don’t always answer right away, but I *do* answer every fan email that I get personally. (Kevins.studio@gmail.com)  Thank you for believing in us enough to stick with this whole interview!  Above all else, thank you for reading. At the end of the day, readers are why we write. *fini*

Healing Hearts by @SexyMuffyWilson ~ Thursday Tasters Excerpt 2 ~ #ASMSG #flashfiction #ThursdayTasters

Thursday Tasters  is just a tidbit from each of our work-in-progress projects. Today I thought I would give you a little excerpt from my Healing Hearts. You can read the excerpts from the other participating authors  here  or they are listed below like beautiful life changing moments.

Enjoy ~   o√ ¸.¨¯`*.✿.*˜"*°

Blurb:
Brianna Denton walked the night and crawled the pubs searching for her sister’s murderer. Drugs and alcohol drove her twin to prostitution in the shadows and rat holes of the underbelly of North Beach society.  Brianna lived her sister’s life on the tight edge of the raw reality until she pushed someone too hard, too fast.
Tatianna’s life drew Brianna into the bowels of the dark underground society, but to who’s destiny—her own or Tatianna’s?

Someone wanted her dead too.
He’d seen her on the streets, in the flea bag bars and pool halls the midnight scum frequented. She fascinated him with her Mediterranean beauty and her disdain. She was fast, unapologetic, but her curves were slow and yielding. He ached for her until one night slithered into the wee hours of the early morning at Blu’s Balls. The smoke in the pool hall hung in the air like a noose from the ceiling.
She wanted a bath but she wanted the blond-haired, blue-eyed man with the heart-shaped face and the gentle mouth more, first.
Dr Ben James recognized Brianna immediately when the EMT’s brought her into his ER. He hadn’t seen her since that night—the night she picked him.Can he save her life? If he can’t, can he forget her?

Excerpt:

If Brianna remembered, she showed them Tatianna’s photograph and asked if they’d ever met or seen her. If they had, it was sure they’d fucked her so there was little reason to ask them that. Sometimes she forgot to show them the photograph. It was those times she asked herself what was she really doing out here if she wasn’t looking for her sister’s killer? She liked the seedy, smoke-filled pool halls and honky-tonks where there was a foregone conclusion that the women who frequented joints like that were looking for “joints”, medicinal or meaty, of their own. She was no different and the joints she favored were prolific. Someday, one of them would be attached to Mr. Right maybe, but until then, there were plenty to keep her busy enough to feed her demons—and fight her sister’s battles. But, if she wasn’t chasing her sister’s killer, what was she doing? Her sister brought her out here, onto the cold heartless streets of despair, just like she pulled the cops into the sordid peep show that was her life. If they couldn’t find Tatianna’s murderer, why did she think she could? Maybe, the loss of her sister, her twin, was just the excuse she needed to find herself while searching for the answers in Tatianna’s life. Tatianna, poor Tatianna…When she grieved for Tatianna, she mourned for herself as well. They were both dead, in one way or another. She lost sight of her purpose as she fell, tumbled—out of control—into the depths of her own personal Hell. She rarely went to the same place night after night. She preferred to dot her sordid experiences in the arms of new men, occasionally a repeat, but she would never find Mr. Destiny or Mr. Murder if she kept repeating the same mistakes and the same creeps. It actually seemed like a good plan. Last night it was The Bitter End, a real cesspool where the beer was warm and the women were cold, but everyone played great stick and didn’t ask questions. She wondered briefly how long before tempting Lady Fate looking for Mr. Right in an ocean of Mr. Wrongs would result in her own bitter end. Tonight she planned on going to Baby Blu’s Sticks & Balls. Everyone called it Blu Balls…for a reason, she surmised. She had seen her share of blue balls in the past—plenty of them. She had been the source of inspiration for them. She smiled to herself, straightened her skirt before pushing the door open. The place was hopping and it was so smoke-filled, her eyes instantly teared. Why these places always stank of piss and sweat never ceased to amaze her. She wore leather all the time because the fabric never absorbed any of the odors and the clinging crap that floated in the air or stuck to the barstools around the bar. When she was done, she didn’t want to smell, see, or feel any evidence of her descent into the bowels of city nightlife. She told herself she was doing it for her sister and would leave it with her, in the dark, when she headed back to her apartment each night. It was what it was; she didn’t want to take it home with her.  She left it all on the streets her sister loved, shrouded in the nights her sister sought. She walked into Blu Balls with her cue case, thigh high boots and attitude. The tables were cracking and as expected, he was there. He was there every time she showed up. She really wondered if he had a life, or if he was just waiting his turn, but then why would she? Why would she wonder—them’s not the rules. It was none of her business and she really didn’t care. But, she’d caught him watching her on several occasions. He watched her from the dark recesses of the smoke-filled saloon. With the crack of slapping balls and sticks as noisy as monkeys with tambourines and drumsticks as a backdrop, he watched as she picked the lucky man for her night. He always watched. He always waited. Hell, maybe he was her Mr. Right or Mr. Murder. She looked over at him, with confidence oozing from her every pore, full-faced, proud. No one ever turned her down. He wouldn’t either. She didn’t care what he was.Tonight, it would be him—the black-haired blue-eyed hunk of honeyed sex with the heart-shaped baby face.
She wondered if he ever fucked her sister.Read the entire story and many more!Available in Bestselling Boxed Set

Violca's DragonbyLeilani Love @LeilaniLoveBookAward-WinningandInt'l Bestselling Author

Violca Grey knows life can change instantly. Two years after her parents’ sudden death, Violca is left raising her four younger sisters. She doesn’t realize that their lives are all in danger from something that may not be human.
Chase Reed knows the Grey sisters possibly hold the key to his fate. He is determined to get close, protect them and bring them to his Dragon King.
Together, Chase and Violca not only have to protect their families—they also have to fight against their rising feelings for each other. But what Violca doesn't know is that once a dragon decides he wants something, there is no stopping him from getting it.

Standing in front of her, he looked her over and when she finally looked up at him, he noticed that her violet eyes were darker as she looked at him angrily. “I didn’t ask you for your help,” she snapped.
Chase knew that smiling at her right now would not help him, nor would telling her she looked beautiful when she was angry. Watching her breasts rise and fall as she breathed, her violet eyes sparkle with anger, and the straight line of her lips, he fought the urge to kiss her. “You didn’t, but that doesn’t mean I want to see you hurt.”
She glared at him. “Why’re you here? What do you want with me?”
Chase stepped closer to her and reached up to touch her cheek, dropping his hand when she seemed to flinch before he could touch her. “I’m here because I wanted to make sure you’re safe.”
She snorted at him and he couldn’t help but smile at the unfeminine sound. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.” She pushed her hair back from her face and looked up at him, her voice lowering to almost a whisper, “Why did you kiss me? Was it just to get close to me?”

Chase saw a flash of hurt in her eyes and he stepped in front of her, cupping her cheek, making sure she looked at him when he answered, “I kissed you because there was no way I could be near you and not.”

Leilani Love
Featured Book: Violca's Dragon
Hello everyone. Nice to meet you
Hello, Leilani! How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing? I’ve been writing for about seven years. I moved to a very small town in Oregon. I had enough time to start reading again and one day…started writing
How did you come up with this storyline? My witches are born from my dreams while my storyline came from research on dragons.                  What are the best and the worst aspects of writing? The worst part of writing is editing. Not my strong suit. I wish you just wrote your rough draft and it was done and magically edited itself. Favorite part of writing is coming up with my characters and my storyline. I fall in love with all my characters.
What inspires you to write? The voices in my head of course. Just kidding, there is something that makes me feel complete when I write. My imagination has always been over active so now it has an outlet.
How did you conduct your research for Violca's Dragon? I researched dragons. The dragons I went back and forth on and looked up different myths. I end up settling on the Greek’s version of dragons. What would happen if the God’s didn’t kill the dragons after they helped killed the Titans? What reason would they have to spare their lives? And if the Gods did keep them around…would they let them stay as big and powerful?
What are 3 of your favorite quotes from Violca’s Dragon?
Chase saw a flash of hurt in her eyes and he stepped in front of her, cupping her cheek, making sure she looked at him when he answered, “I kissed you because there was no way I could be near you and not.”
Chase knew that smiling at her right now would not help him, nor would telling her she looked beautiful when she was angry.
Chase smirked, looking down and she noticed a small tent forming under the blanket. Violca felt her cheeks heating up, and clearing her throat, she tried to hide her embarrassment when he announced, “As you can see I’m already up. But if you’d like, I’ll join you downstairs in a few minutes.”
More Favorites from Violca’s Dragon: Fun scene between Chase and one of his best friends: Chase headed over to his bag, and grabbing a shirt, pulled it over his head. “Put your shirt on Scott, before you scare the kids.”Scott chuckled, flexing. “You’re just worried that Violca will have a hard time keeping her hands off the guns.”Chase snorted. “Guns, really?”
What would your friends say is your best quality? Sarcasm and shenanigans of course.
Are reader reviews important to you? Of course. Writing for the most part is very solitary and you wonder if anyone is going to read your book, let alone like it. Reviews and messages from people who enjoyed my book make my day and encourage me to keep going.
What do you do when you don’t write? I have two boys that keep me very busy and a day job. I also read and love to go hiking.
Tell us about your other books? The other books I have written are part of the same series. Showing you more of this world and other characters that lives all tie together in some way.
Thank you guys for taking the time to get to know me a little better. I hope you guys all have a wonderful day!

Leilani Love is a proud mother of two very active boys. She loves traveling to new places and meeting new people wherever she goes. Blue BloodbyMay Sage @MaySageAuthorAward-WinningandInt'l Bestselling Author

The Klints, a superior race in every way, long ago decided to abolish natural birthing; over the last millenniums, every child had been engineered, created, designed; but things went wrong, hence their need for human breeders.
Lena's life might have changed since their invasion, but she's not particularly affected by their presence on a daily basis, until the day they find out that she's a hundred percent compatible to the emperor of the entire galaxy.
Her job was simple. She was supposed to give birth to his heir and disappear.
But then, someone threatens that child.

It wasn't the first time that he wondered whether the human race in its entirety had simply lost their damn mind; or they could be suicidal. He wasn't ruling out option two. However, right this moment, Jaycn didn't give a rat’s ass about the fate of the race which had openly declared war on the most powerful family in the galaxy. Well, that wasn't exactly true. There were two humans he very much cared to locate. Or rather, one human and a halfling.Shooting another Dissenter right between the eyes, wishing the bullets were set to kill, Jaycn ran forth, heading in the direction everyone else was leaving.
Where were they?
Falcon speaking, he heard in his mind. Great, just what he needed right about now. Calden was short tempered at the best of times. Today? He was likely to bathe in the blood of his enemies for fun. No, no. Quite literally. I have a location on sparrow. He's two floors down, in the ventilation system. Alive. Keep it that way, cousin. The communication stopped abruptly. Right, no pressure. He was supposed to find a kid somewhere inside a tiny ventilation system no grown male could hope to wiggle into, and if he didn't, his favorite relative was likely to bathe in his blood. Another explosion resounded, too close for comfort. Shit.
The humans were too well informed and well equipped to work on their own; there was about a ninety percent chance that they had a traitor in their rank. How, otherwise, might the Dissenters have heard of a random, unplanned visit? As Earth had no ambassador, it was still under the direct supervision of the Emperor, which gave Calden an excuse to turn up at least once a year. This time, no one had been told until the very last minute, yet here they were. Under attack. As the assault had started in the west wing, the target had been evident. They wanted to hurt the child, hence Jaycn’s conclusion: the humans were freaking suicidal. Thankfully for everyone involved, the child had made it so far.
The next explosion propelled Jaycn ten feet backwards and if he wasn't mistaken, that smell meant he probably didn’t look all that good right about now. Goddess, he hated getting burnt, but it wouldn't be the first or the last time.
Jaycn, retreat to base. There’s a transport on the roof. The curt order surprised him; sure, he wasn't in best shape, but he hadn't thought that Calden would have cared. Well, rather – he hadn't thought that Calden would have cared about his welfare as much as he cared about getting his son back. That wasn't a suggestion, General.Yeah, well then, he was going to have to be insubordinate, wasn't he?Because Jaycn couldn't leave the boy. Contrarily to the human Dissenters, he wasn't suicidal and there was someone much, much more frightening than Calden who would cut off his balls if Alek didn't make it out in one piece. Without being scared. Or scratched. Or crying.Shit, he should have brought a lollipop. I'm not leaving him. Where is he now? There was a long pause, followed by a sigh. One floor down. I can't see him, but his chip is still in the ventilation. Got it. Well, he thought he had got it, until the building started collapsing; he could feel the upper floors sliding, slowly. Or pretty damn quickly, but adrenaline was a wondrous thing. Shit. Jaycn concentrated as hard as he possibly could, and by some sort of miracle, managed to summon a grappling hook and a thin rope. His microchip, like most of the latest ones, was fitted with a designing program, but getting anything done took a lot of willpower; in a normal mind frame, he wouldn't have had a chance – but as he mentioned before, adrenaline rocked. He threw the hook at a part of the building that seemed intact, and jumped. He’d just managed to lift himself up on the floor when the headlight of a speeder blinded him. Jaycn rose to a crouch, alerted, until he recognized the pilot. Calden. He'd never been quite so happy to see his cousin’s too perfect, too serious face in his lifetime. A side door lifted, and the speeder approached, close enough for him to hop in. Jaycn grunted, as every bone in his body begged for mercy. “Let’s not do that again.” “Take the commands,” Calden ordered, removing his long formal jacket, and taking various tools from a supply cabinet. Oh, no. “Cal, you can't go out there, you're the…”“One word and I rip your tongue out. My son is out there. Alive.”Which was a miracle in itself. How the fuck had the kid managed to make it so far? He was smart, no doubt about it, but he was also seven years old – and let's not forget that the humans had obviously been after him.“Then let me go.”“You aren't in optimal condition. If I don't make it, do me a favor. Tell Lena…”The Klints turned, weapons in hand, as they felt someone jump inside the open door. Then, both of them breathed out freely for the first time within the last hour. “Tell me what?”Lena, damn her, was dangling from her own rope – a stylish silver and blue chain. She wore the Elite dress she'd been wrapped in during the meeting, but she'd cut a slit along her long legs; they could see her trademark black running pants underneath. As per usual, she’d been prepared for all eventualities. Her red hair was still elegantly knotted around her face; there wasn’t a strand out of place.
That woman was going to kill them some day, and she'd do it without breaking a sweat.

May Sage
Featured Book: Blue Blood
Hi guys! Thanks for reading my interview. So I’m May, and I love writing and devouring romance of every shades, especially if it involves swoonworthy guys and sassy girls.  How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing? Well, back when I was about seven, an unwise teacher said something she probably never, ever said again in her career: write as much as you want. The project was re-writing a really cool story. Twelve pages later, I realized that it was my calling.
How did you come up with this storyline? Blue Blood is a bit of a funny one. I started it after reading a dozen of sci-fi romance. After number twelve, I was seriously exasperated. Every single one of them – and I do mean, every one – featured a weak, desperate distressing damsel. So I wrote part one, Rise (and chose this title) to show that woman can kick ass, even against super-hot aliens ;)
What are the best and the worst aspects of writing? The best is losing myself in my stories. I can look at the time after what feels like minutes and it would be nighttime. The very worst thing about it, though, is when the words just won’t come. It happens to all of us; we’re just human.
What inspires you to write? Just about everything and anything, good and bad, can be an inspiration. For example, a fellow author and friend of mine was confessing that she’d been writing naughty scenes at work, and was embarrassed by it… BOOM! One idea came to me for a book, and Shy Girls Write it Better was born :D
How did you conduct your research for Blue Blood? I am a geek. Like the kind of geek who can paraphrase the elvish parts in Lord of the Ring, who has read the majority of the Star Wars books and know just about every marvel characters. Imagining a story happening in space was as natural as writing about my day to day life… but all that being said, I still researched plenty, mostly military things and buildings around San Francisco. Sometimes, when I can I travel to the place where I set my books, but this time, Wikipedia was my best friend.
What are 3 of your favorite quotes from Blue Blood? Hard one! Well, the number one probably is: “It might be stupid to believe a guy because he was good looking, but well, women had done it for thousands of years and the human species had made it so far.” Then, “Someone had to go and tell her she was supposed to be human.” And finally, that one made me laugh out loud when I wrote it, although it’s pretty simple. “Dude, did you actually say wench?”
What would your friends say is your best quality? I’m the one people go to when they have a problem – give me about two minutes and I would have a solution, with a graph and a three step plan.
Are reader reviews important to you? God yes. Honestly, I am so insecure about whether my stories are good up until I read the various opinions on them. I read each and every one of them, although sometimes callous reviews hurt my feelings. It only hurt because I care.
What do you do when you don’t write? I walk my German Shepherd puppy (a lot) and cuddle my black cat. I read books (about ten hours a day :D ) and I cook yummy food. God, I need to get out more!
Tell us about your other books? Well, I love writing romance; that’s at the heart of each and every one of my stories. Little Morning Star, my longest, most complex one, is an Urban Fantasy staring a witch, angels, hellhounds and other demons. I’m known for my fairy tales, and they are a blast to write – full of humor and smexy stuff! Then, I also write a few contemporary romance, like Shy Girls Write It Better (the one inspired by Erin) and some paranormal romance (werewolf, vampires…) Yes. I have a lot of books!
If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be? The fact that you read all this means that you love and respect our profession, and I want you to know that we appreciate you. It’s a difficult job, and a very lonely one, but you are the reason we all manage it.

On that note, thank you for taking the time to read more about me. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with any kind of question or comment – I’m all over the place, but mostly, I’m available on Facebook. Enjoy our box set!
Once Upon A Time, there was a little girl who just loved telling her own stories. Fast forward about two decades? Not a lot of change, there.
My mother's collection of novels extends to three rooms, the stepfather who raised me writes awesome short stories: really, I didn't have a choice, I caught a bug.

I dabble in anything, Fantasy, Contemporary... Really, the subject doesn't matter. The gist of it is: I will make you laugh, and I will make you want more :)

Dreamscapes I am the night, and you—the galaxy of my life. Hold me as I lay my heart upon your breast and travel with me into the darkness of dreams and the light of hope. Release the sun into the fading day; give yourself into my heart and share the imaginings of lovers everywhere as they welcome the dark watchful eye of the night.

Share my dreams, ride my desires; come to me on prayers of love and longing. You are what I am, what I need to be to be whole as I come into you. We will soar the galaxy, riding comets of passion on rapids made of stars. Come dream the night away with me.
We will claim the sky and love among the Gods until the darkness fades and delivers a bright new morning.
We will slip along golden ribbons of sunbeams to dance between the sunflowers in beds of wooded clover. Make love with me to the rhythm of the Earth as the sun warms our hearts and souls.
Let me be your future, let me be your love.
I will cherish you forever or until the final star fades to black into Eternity.© Muffy Wilson

She leaned against the door jam in nothing but her black thong and thigh-highs, a blue feather tucked alluringly in the band. She was undeniably the most beautiful woman when she was at her most irresistible.
She was a lethal combination of soulless determination and hungry hellcat.
That made her irascible if she didn’t get just what she wanted—when she wanted it.
She floated across the room with the fluid grace of a ravenous leopard and straddled his lap, facing him.
He could smell the thick aroma of her desire rise with her heat to envelope him.

Excerpt:

Everyone gets what they deserve. Everybody knows that.Hell, it didn’t matter anyway. It was the wee hours of the morning and Brianna was all alone on the barren, black, wet streets. Curiously, she was unafraid to walk the night between the underbelly of society that lives in the darkness. It was probably just like the night her sister was murdered. She was probably troubled by the same things—haunted by the depths of her own depravity. The clack-clack-clack of her heels on the sidewalk announced her approach as she headed…where? Home? That was a laugh. It made her think of the first time—her first time, maybe her sister’s first time—on the streets and in the black flesh pits of San Francisco that served up watered down whiskey, easy women and the finest drug connections money could buy, steal or cheat. Shrouded in the black lies hidden by the night, she did whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted and with whomever she wanted. The rain always had that effect, kept the good ones home while the creeps washed out of every skank black hole.It was like that her first night…and he was a creep. But she did him anyway, holding her breath as he huffed, thrust, and panted into her young pink mouth. She thought of her kid sister. Was he the one?The police didn’t know and had no more leads. What was she to do? She had to find
out; she had to help. At least, she had to try. But, she got swept away in the trying. If she had any doubt about what she had become, it vanished with that blow-job stuffed into her sweet Mona Lisa smile. Every night since, her skirts got shorter and the nights longer and the creeps, well, the creeps were all still creeps. It was getting harder to remember what her kid sister looked like and why she was here. It was getting harder and harder…and easier, too. There were nights she didn’t care who killed her sister and there were nights she could think of little else. The line between purpose and obsession became obscure. She could question how she wound up on the streets, but she already knew. It was a matter of choice—her choice—and the men, the trail of men in her life, were a matter of choice too—her choice and hers alone. She picked them; they didn’t pick her. Still…It was just a matter of time before she would call one of those black rat holes home to curl up with the viper that lived within. There was a wild thought afloat that nothing positive ever happens until you hit the very bottom of the abyss. Nothing positive had even begun to happen in her life. Guess she had further to fall, since she clearly had not hit rock bottom. Could be. Until then, she entertained herself with the fine parade of men. The steady stream of eager lovers had only one thing wrong—there was no love involved. No names, no “what do you do for a living”, no talk about wives, lovers, divorces or kids. Those were her rules and if you wanted to fuck her, you did it on her terms. Clear, simple, no muss no fuss…and no kissing. She didn’t want to kiss the underbelly of society. They were all scumbags and she liked it that way—on the edge, the tight, unforgiving edge.

Company SecretsbyXyla Turner @xylaturnerAward-WinningandInt'l Bestselling Author

Jessica Cayman is an ambitious Account Executive for Delancey, Inc. She stays in her lane, works hard and has her eyes set on becoming a partner within the next year. The plan is easy until Sage Wesley, III from The Company refuses to work with her.
His aversion to Jessica turns into a kiss that literally has both of them off their feet. Floating in midair? Then a bite on her neck?

There are too many secrets and Jessica soon finds herself in the middle of an old war between vampires and hunters all because of broken treaties.
(Sage's internal strength is wearing thin as he tries to stay away from Jessica. However, he finds himself at her office and all bets are off)
I slammed the door, stood there in front and took off my gloves. If I had to have a lasting impression on my hands and body, it would be hers.
“What are you doing here?” She turned at the slamming of the door, then stood up.
“I had to see you.” I ground my teeth as I held back with a serious amount of restraint.
“Are you alright?” She asked.
“No,” I growled. “I'm not alright.”
She rounded the desk and started walking towards me.
“Oh my God, what's wrong?”
“Stop,” I snapped and held up my hand.
I was hanging on by a fucking thread. It felt like I had been in the sun for hours and was about to combust. What was happening to me?
“What have you done?” I growled at her. “Ever since you came around, I've been fucked up. Your scent…”
I stopped myself because she would think I was bat-shit crazy. Well, I felt like I was going to be.
“What? Scent? Do you need me to call an ambulance?” She was becoming frantic.
Her heart rate increased, and her brows came together in confusion.
I took a deep breath in an attempt to gain my composure. “No, I'm fine.”
She inched towards me again with one hand out.
“Sage, can I take a look at you? You don't look good.”
She was so close her scent stung my nostrils, and if I had tear ducts, they would have leaked. Her hand touched my face, and I knew that presence would stay there for days. Lifting my chin, I looked at her through hooded eyes.
I could not help it. Shit, I did not want to help any of it. Jessica was who I wanted, and that was that.
I grabbed her wrist and jerked her towards me. My lips crashed down on hers and for a brief moment, she submitted to me and let me take my fill of her. Her lips were soft, pliable and open for me. My hands began to roam her body and landed on her ass so that I could feel that for days. Her hands gripped both of my arms right before she abruptly pulled back.
Her fingers immediately went to touch her lips as those wide dark eyes stared at me with shock, horror and surprise.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” She gasped.
Then without any warning at all, she smacked me right across the face.

“I can’t believe you.” She looked at her hand, almost surprised that she used it. “Oh my God.”

Xyla Turner
Featured Book: Company Secrets
Hey Everybody, my name is Xyla Turner and I’m a new romance author who has decided to spread her wings in the many different genres that I’ve grown to love. I’m so excited that you’ve taken the time to tune in about my story that is included in the Dark Legends, this awesome, box set.
Hello, Xyla! You had me at mid-air sex scene! But, let's get started. How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?             I’ve been writing since I was a teenager but I finally published an inspirational and children’s book in 2012. My first romance novel, The Chase, was published in 2015 and it was inspired through a bit of internal unrest. I was at a crossroads in my life and didn’t know what to do. So, I decided to either write about what I wanted for my life or sit and cry about it all. Thankfully, I decided to write and four days later, fifty-five thousand words were written and I haven’t stopped writing since.
How did you come up with this storyline?                  This storyline was in connection with a collaboration with two awesome authors, Olivia Gaines and Tiana Laveen. We had central connecting characters who were at the same company but they were very strange and supernatural. My book, Broken Treaty, features Sage, a one-hundred and thirty-year old vampire who meets a woman, that is not from his tribe and she has him breaking all the rules. I love when strong men are broken by the natural wiles of their true mate.
What are the best and the worst aspects of writing? The best aspects of writing include creating a new world that you enter in and can build from scratch with your own ideas. The funny part about that, is the characters have a mind of their own, so I guess it’s not entirely your world. The worst aspects of writing for me is the aftermath. After, I type “The End,” the hard work starts. Edits, edits and more edits. Reading, reading and more reading, more edits, more drafts and the cycle seems to never end. This work, for me, is tedious.
What inspires you to write? Life! I need nothing but to walk down my street to think of a story. My inspiration to write is really to get the stories and characters out of my head. Tell their story, so that in some small way, so many of our own stories are told. It’s something to read about a character that is ‘you’. I love when readers can connect but I love when they say, ‘that is me.’ It reminds us we’re not alone in the world.
How did you conduct your research for Broken Treaty? This was my first paranormal romance, so I did a variety of research including online searches, re-watching a few of my favorite vampire movies again, checked out some paranormal books and asking readers their thoughts about major changes to vampire’s stories. It was interesting that readers were not open for alterations of the traditional vampire.
Name a Favorite from Broken Treaty:Mid-air sex scene. Enough said. :-)
What would your friends say is your best quality? My friends think I have an active imagination, I’m a problem solver and I have great ideas.
Are reader reviews important to you?Oddly enough, reader’s reviews are important to me. As I said before, I’m a fairly new author, so the more constructive feedback, the better.
What do you do when you don’t write? Usually, I hang out with my family, my nieces and nephews, catch up on my television shows or do some sort of extreme sport.
Tell us about your other books? Most of my other books are about alpha men and the sassy women who tame them. They are diverse, sexy and for grown people. I’m starting another series in another genre, New Adult, that will feature the collegiate atmosphere but also incorporate sexy characters and the growing pains of adulthood.
If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be? My motto is Switch the Style Up and this is something that I’ve done as an author because I don’t like to be boxed into one category. So, I encourage readers to do the same. Switch It Up.
Thanks for having me and I look forward to hearing from you all about the stories in this set. I would encourage you to check out Broken Treaty, so you can meet Sage & Jessica! :-)

Xyla Turner was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. As a teenager, Xyla wrote short stories and essays that have won numerous awards in local to nationwide competitions. She is an avid reader, but a sucker for romance. Specifically, sassy females and dominant males. Xyla is a dedicated educator and a life coach. Outside of reading, Xyla likes to spend time with her family and travel. She writes different genres, but her favorite is romance.
