John Peel is the author of Doctor Who books and comic strips. Notably, he wrote the first original Doctor Who novel, Timewyrm: Genesys, to launch the Virgin New Adventures line. In the early 1990s he was commissioned by Target Books to write novelisations of several key Terry Nation Dalek stories of the 1960s after the rights were finally worked out. He has the distinction of being one of only three authors credited on a Target novelisation who had not either written a story for the TV series or been a part of the production team (the others were Nigel Robinson and Alison Bingeman).

Outside of Doctor Who, Peel has also written novels for the Star Trek franchise. Under the pseudonym "John Vin

I don't have any spare copies of that one myself, so I can't sell you one. I usually buy from Abebooks.com, but you're right - those prices are crazy!(less)

Where Do You Get Your Ideas?

One question authors invariably get asked is: where do you get your ideas from? It's a difficult question to answer sometimes, because at times we don't know where the ideas come from. They seem to creep uninvited into our heads and won't go away until we write them down.

But sometimes, however, we know exactly where our ideas come from. I've just sold a short story called "Now Departing", and I c Read more of this blog post »

Doctor Who by Ian Marter

Ian Marter is one of the better novelizers for this series, but even he can't due much with this very lame story. Lots of running around and vague pacifistic theories abound, but there isn't much plot or characterization. Sadly, not one of the better ...more

Lots of issues of the Black Panther magazine written by Christopher Priest, and, apparently, a fan favorite. I'm afraid that Priest's writing style left me unimpressed - lots of nice ideas, but overly-complicated and his lack of linear storytelling i ...more

As a lover of "Jane Eyre", I was looking forward to this early work, unpublished while Charlotte was alive - and then I discovered why it had been left unpublished by her. Aside from being tedious reading, she gives us a very unconvincing portrait of ...more

“I never make stupid mistakes - only very, very clever ones.”
John Peel

“I just want to hear something I haven't heard before”

“There's always the possibility that you're going to come across a record that transforms your life. And it happens weekly. It's like a leaf on the stream. There are little currents and eddies and sticks lying in the water that nudge you in a slightly different direction. And then you break loose and carry on down the current. There's nothing that actually stops you and lifts you out of the water and puts you on the bank but there are diversions and distractions and alarums and excursions which is what makes life interesting really. It's fantastic.”
