I'm currently working on a new book, due to be published in August 2015, that tells the extraordinary story of Willoughbyland, the forgotten seventeenth-century English colony in Suriname that was exchanged with the Dutch for New York.

When not reading, writing or staring out of the window, I love making sushi, pubs, growing stuff and visiting remote places.

I'm a member of the Authors Cricket Club, and wrote a chapter of A Season of English Cricket from Hackney to Hambledon. I am also a contributor to the forthcoming Oxford Companion to Sweets.

I live in East London with my wife, three children and annoying dog.

"Some books jump to the top of my 'to read' list as soon as I open them. This, loaned by a good friend, was definitely in that category - it might be because the D-Day Dodgers song appears near the beginning! It's told with such clarity and fluency..." Read more of this review »

"History as it should be: deeply researched, profoundly insightful, completely accessible, and vastly entertaining. The author uses a partial biography of Ian Fleming during his time in Jamaica as a tool for exploring the decline of the British Emp..." Read more of this review »

"Skillfully blends a history of Jamaica and the literary James Bond through the prism of Goldeneye, the tropical retreat where the novels were written. Author Matthew Parker begins with the story of Ian Fleming's first visit to Jamaica and a concis..." Read more of this review »

“The square of every prime number is one more than a multiple of 24.”
Matthew Parker, Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension

“The food is awful,” Jan wrote, “and cooked in such a way that no civilized white man can stand it for more than a week or two … Almost all the food is fried. They feed us fried green bananas, boiled rice, and foul-smelling salt fish. It rains so much that honest to goodness my hat is getting mouldy on my head… I haven't had on a pair of dry shoes in weeks.”
Matthew Parker, Panama Fever: The Epic Story of the Building of the Panama Canal

“Blanchet himself turned his attention to the rivers, establishing observation posts on the Chagres, Trinidad, Obispo, and the Río Grande; these were equipped with fluviographs, which confirmed the challenge that the rainy season would bring to the successful construction and running of the canal, with rivers rising 20 feet in as many hours and their rate of discharge increasing overnight from 3,000 to over 60,000 cubic feet per second.
