Behind The Book: THE DEVIL IN HER WAY
I’ve written all of my novels in New Orleans. Not long after I got here, I tried writing a novel set in Louisiana, which went nowhere until I reset it on Staten Island. Fifteen years later, my latest novel stalled until I moved it off Staten Island and reset it in New Orleans. Maybe now, long after I thought I’d arrived, I’m home.

“The Devil in Her Way has it all: rapid-fire pacing, dialogue that crackles, an artful depiction of the streets of New Orleans, and —in Maureen Coughlin — an utterly authentic, memorable protagonist. Bill Loehfelm is a terrific writer.”
- Alafair Burke, best-selling author of NEVER TELL and LONG GONE.

“Bill Loehfelm’s razor-sharp The Devil in Her Way is everything you want a crime novel to be: morally twisty, richly textured and filled with soul. And perhaps its greatest gift of all is the battered-but-not-broken Maureen Coughlin, a hero with whom we will go anywhere.” - Megan Abbott, author of DARE ME and THE END OF EVERYTHING

“Though the eyes of a rookie cop, Loehfelm takes us on a deep, gritty tour of the New Orleans tourists never see. I love THE DEVIL IN HER WAY, and can’t wait for Loehfelm’s next.”
- Sara Gran, author of CLAIRE DeWITT AND THE CITY OF THE DEAD and DOPE

This week’s indie brings us back to New Orleans, to the riverbend section of town and the Maple Street Book Shop. In their campaign to “Fight the Stupids,” Maple Street is one of the few indies I know actually expanding, with new stores in Mid-City and in the New Orleans Healing Center in the Bywater.[image error]

“THE DEVIL IN HER WAY is not only Bill Loehfelm’s best book yet, but it may just the best mystery novel since James Lee Burke’s THE TIN ROOF BLOWDOWN to have come out of post-Katrina New Orleans. I can offer no higher praise than to say that I finished it, and wanted to read more. A gem.”
- John Connolly, best-selling author of WRATH OF ANGELS and BURNING SOUL

This week’s featured indie is the Mysterious Book Shop in NYC. Owned my the famed Otto Penzler, legendary in the mystery community, they hosted my first ever NYC signing, when I appeared there for THE DEVIL SHE KNOWS in 2011. That appearance, as a born and raised New Yorker, remains one of my top five thrills as a writer.
