Yet another reason to love New Orleans: the abundance of independent, neighborhood book stores.

The first of the ARCs for my next book. First, I can’t wait for a book to go public. Then when it does, I live in mortal fear of the reaction. A true writer, never happy.

Real as Love
I had dream last night I was drinking a beer on a wintry evening at Donovan’s in Sea Bright, NJ. I was standing on the seawall, looking out over the ocean. There was snow on the beach. Inside, the news was on the TV, running a story about Dizzy Dave, the town drunk, who’d gone missing. I haven’t lived in Sea Bright since 1997. Funny how a place can live inside you as powerful and as real as a person you once loved.

To my Staten Island friends & other Sandy sufferers:
I grew up on Staten Island. I’ve written three novels about the place and people who live there. I lived in Sea Bright on the Jersey Shore for the better part of five years before moving to New Orleans in 1997. Here’s what little I have to offer for the long road ahead.
As the recovery grinds on, and it is a grind, take time to socialize, even in the midst of the worst of it. Don’t go it alone. Share a six pack on the porch, fire up the coals and invite the neighbors over, find an open pizza joint and split a pie, if you’ve got power have a crew over for the game. It was a long, long haul after Katrina and companionship and laughs are what kept us going forward and kept us from going completely crazy. It’s not frivolous, it’s not inconsiderate, it’s not denial, it’s essential. Carry each other.

Maureen and More
A few fun things are happening
My next book, THE DEVIL IN HER WAY, the new Maureen Coughlin novel and my first set in New Orleans, is scheduled to be published on April 30, 2013. It’s already available for pre-order at Amazon and at Barnes & Noble. For other shopping options, including my favorite independents, hit up the BOOKS page on this very tumblr.
You can find THE DEVIL SHE KNOWS, the acclaimed first Maureen Coughlin book, and my other books there, as well. Don’t be afraid to get your Devil on early.
This fall, I’m excited to be part of two great projects. Earlier this month, I attended the launch signing for the anthology BOOKS TO DIE FOR: The World’s Greatest Mystery Writers on the World’s Greatest Mystery Novels, edited by John Connolly and Declan Burke. Among essays by and about such writers as Agatha Christie, Dennis Lehane, Raymond Chandler, Tana French, Elmore Leonard, Charlaine Harris, Sara Gran, Michael Connelly, Lee Child and Meg Gardiner, you can find my humble contribution - an essay on Laura Lippman’s novel What the Dead Know. You can find out more about the book and its contributors at www.bookstodiefor.net.

On November 6, Akashic Books releases the short story anthology STATEN ISLAND NOIR in paperback and Kindle. A collection of crime stories set in the forgotten fifth borough, my new short story “Snake Hill” kicks it off. Edited by award-winning poet and CSI (that’s College of Staten Island) instructor Patricia Smith, the book also features work by S.J. Rozan, Bruce DeSilva, and Shay Youngblood. You can pre-order SIN (see what I did there?) wherever books are sold.
Thanks for playing along.

BORN THIS WAY: My life as a Mets fan: Birthday edition.
Forty-three years ago a miracle happened, on the first full day of my life. Hard to believe sometimes. Was there any way I could not grow up a Mets fan?

Saints Break Through as Brees Breaks Record
“Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but the ability to start over.”
— F. Scott Fitzgerald
Congrats to Drew Brees, who we often forget was at one point not long ago a too-short, has-been QB with a bum shoulder, whose only job offer was from a wrecked team in a wrecked city, on smashing yet another record. And also to Marques Colston, once the second-to-last pick in the entire NFL draft, now the Saints all-time TD receptions leader.
