“I arrived on my first night, and i walked into the Maple Leaf Bar and Earl King was playing. And on the way to the Maple Leaf, two blocks before you make that turn, there’s another club that used to be called Jimmy’s. And there’s a big poster outside that said, “Tonight: Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns.” I couldn’t believe it. I’m in New Orleans. I can’t believe I’m in New Orleans.”

- British-born Jon Cleary, on his first night in New Orleans. (via americanroutes)

Where did you find the statistic in "Fresh Kills" that Staten Island has the largest cancer rate per capita in the world?

It’s something I remember hearing in high school. I did know a lot of people on the island who lost family to cancer, many of them young. When I wrote FRESH KILLS I thought of it, and thought it was something Junior would remember and believe. I never looked it up to see if it was actually true.

Paying homage to Oscar Wilde. Merrion Square, Dublin. We couldn’t get over to see his statue because of the Dublin gay pride parade. Make of that what you will.
