For a week I have been waiting for the buds on the sakura trees near the university to bloom. Last Sunday I came across one that beat everyone else. This afternoon Tokyo has a storm and we have been advised to go home. I hope the winds don't blow the sakura away.

This is a page from Rizal's notebook during his stay in japan in 1888. He is learning to write Japanese characters like the one on the lower right mean "Nippon" or Japan. The original is preserved in the Lopez Memorial Museum.

"Room with a view" is a novel by E.M. Forster. My office in Sophia University, in the center of Tokyo, looks out into St. Ignatius church where Filipinos gather for mass on Sundays. Its a room with a view that will make my sabbatical very productive.
