ATF Workshop Recap 1 from RWA
ATF Workshop Recap 1
In a full day of pre-RWA conference workshops, the online chapter, Kiss Of Death, hosted agents from ATF, which is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms & Explosives. There were 8 presentations, many of which were designed as multi-hour workshops, each compressed into about 30 minutes. Things moved fast and furious, and I can only touch the very basic highlights here. A lot of this post will be bullet point information.

Social Media – My Take
Social Media – With Emphasis on the Social.
I’m still at the RWA Conference, so I’m scheduling this ahead of time. It’s a revamped version of a post on Social Media I ran back in 2013.
Disclaimer. This is my take, how I use Social Media, and everyone’s mileage will vary. What I’ve found true for me isn’t necessarily true for others.
If you’re reading this, odds are you’re well aware of all the social media—Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest—to name the biggies. People, authors included, tend to loo...

Typos Are Like Cockroaches. What Can You Do?
“Typos are like cockroaches,” a former editor at Harper Collins once said. “You can never get rid of them.”
That may be, but nobody likes cockroaches. Can they be exterminated?
If you’re a traditionally published author, one hopes your editorial team catches them all. If you’re an indie author, you also hope your editor catches them all.
(There’s no excuse, in my opinion, for anyone publishing an unedited book, so for this post, I’m talking about indie authors who hire professional editors.)

Choosing the Right Characters and Why I Write
I’m over at the Just Romantic Suspense Blog today talking about choosing the right characters for a novel, and what happens when the characters already have a history, a problem I faced when writing Falcon’s Prey.
I’m also giving away a copy of my award-winning Where Danger Hides (either hard cover or digital) to one lucky commenter. Please stop by!
And, I hope you’ll take a minute to check out my feature on why I write at Warren Adler’s “Writers of the World” site.

WCW – Pancetta Asparagus and Goat Cheese Pizza on a Cauliflower Crust
Pancetta, Asparagus and Goat Cheese Pizza on a Cauliflower Crust
Writing buddy and critique partner Karla Brandenburg mentioned making a pizza with a cauliflower crust right about the time the Hubster chose a pancetta and asparagus pizza for his night to cook. (Note: when he was ready to go shopping, he said, “What’s pancetta?”)
I suggested the cauliflower crust and he was game, so we cobbled the 2 recipes together. If you prefer, you can use a traditional pizza dough crust. If you do, don’t...

Author Branding – Part 2 – Cover Art
Earlier, I talked about author branding, and I mentioned that I was having my covers for the early Blackthorne, Inc. books redone.
The first three were traditionally published in hard cover, and the publisher didn’t seem to have a clue about trying to connect books in a series. These are the covers they produced.
Side note: Most traditional publishers allow minimal author input on covers, and their stand is usually, “Did we spell your name right? Is the title right?” Beyond that, you learn to...
