WCW – Marinade for Grilled Salmon
Hubster found this simple recipe for a marinade for grilled salmon. Quick to put together, quick to cook. A great summertime dish. It would probably be good with chicken, too.

c water
c vegetable oil
lemon pepper to taste

Killing Those Darlings
Killing Those Darlings
William Faulkner has been quoted to say, “In writing, you must kill all your darlings.”
While as authors, we think our prose is glorious and every word is critical to the story, that’s just not the case. Sure, we search for overused words and phrases, but there’s more to editing than getting rid of adverbs, too many prepositional phrases, clichés, and the like.
When I finished the first complete draft of Falcon’s Prey, it was over 100,000 words long. Okay 101,503, but w...

Falcon’s Prey is Live
The wait is over. Falcon’s Prey, Book 8 in my Blackthorne, Inc. series, is up and running at most sales channels as I write this. Once you hit the “publish” button, there’s no way of knowing how long it will take before the book is live. I gave myself plenty of time for a June 4th official release day and started uploading on Tuesday. This time, I was surprised to find it published the same day at Smashwords, Kobo, Nook, and Kindle. iBooks took a day longer, but it’s live there, too. The prin...

WCW – Asian Style Chicken and Broccoli
I found this recipe for an Asian Chicken and Broccoli on an Instant Pot site, but since everything cooks so quickly, I think it works just fine as a stir fry. I made some modifications from the original for my taste; feel free to do the same for yours.
Asian Style Chicken and Broccoli
Ingredients
2 T vegetable oil
1-2 t sesame oil (it has a strong flavor; adjust to your taste)
1 onion, diced
6 scallions, sliced
c hoisin sauce
c soy sauce
1 c chicken broth
2 T oyster sauce
2 T brown sugar
2...

Fine Tuning Your Manuscript
Fine Tuning Your Manuscript
The more eyes on a file the better, but because budgets often preclude hiring a team of editors, the more ways you can make your book seem “different”, the more likely you are to catch errors. Changing the formatting helps.
I’ve talked about fooling the eye by printing hard copies in a different font and in columns. I’ve talked about having Word read the manuscript to you.
Right now, I’m in the process of reading a proof of what will be the print version of the boo...

WCW – Jazzed Up Turkey Burgers
Let’s face it. Turkey burgers can be dry and bland. Here’s a way to jazz them up so they’re full of flavor and juicy to boot. Plan ahead with these, as they’re best if the meat mixture has a minimum of three hours to rest. Overnight is better.
Turkey Burgers
Ingredients:
1 lb ground turkey
c Panko breadcrumbs
1 T grated onions (I used rehydrated dried onion because I was lazy.)
t garlic, minced
2 T oil, either vegetable or olive
1 egg, beaten
2 t Worcestershire sauce
t salt
t smoked papri...

Mistakes Happen. Who’s to Blame?
Mistakes happen. Typos happen. Editors aren’t perfect.
As an Edgar judge, I read a LOT of books last year, all traditionally published. Some big houses, some small press, but MWA has not yet accepted indie published works to be entered in the contest. One would think/hope professional editors working for publishers would ensure a mistake-free product, but not so.
Yes, mistakes happen. None of these errors were of ‘throw the book across the room’ magnitude, but I thought they were worth mentio...
