Don’t Make Resolutions, Set Goals
Time for my annual New Year’s post about Resolutions versus Goals. I gave up making resolutions a long time ago, because they don’t work. Here’s why:
Time for my annual New Year’s post. I gave up making resolutions a long time ago, because they don’t work. Here’s why:
With a new year come new beginnings. Fresh starts. We all enter it filled with hope and promises to make it better than the last one.
And, usually, by the end of January, all those good intentions have gone by the wayside. I gav...

Do You Want to Join my Early Reader Team?
I’m looking for some readers who like to review books for my new Early Reader Team. In a nutshell, team members get a download of the book before it’s released. In return, they’re asked to write and post a review.
Sound interesting? More details, and how to apply are here.

What’s Cooking Wednesday – Hoppin’ John for New Year’s Day
When we first moved to the south, I read about a New Year’s Day traditional dish, Hoppin John. My kids call it Johns Hopkins. There are probably countless variations, but the idea was to serve something with lots of little bits, to represent lots of wealth in the coming year. Here’s some more information.
We’re in Colorado now, but the tradition continues. I don’t think I’ve ever made it exactly the same way twice, but it’s kind of hard to mess up. You just need to pay attention to how long i...

Vocabulary and Point of View
Vocabulary and POV
I’m continuing my holiday break with repeats of posts from years ago. This one first ran in January, 2009, under the title “Fun With Words.”
***
I subscribe to Dictionary.com’s Word of the Day**, and each day I get a new word in my email. Sometimes they’re everyday words. Sometimes they’re words I know but don’t use often, and they’ll trigger a “Good word, I should remember to use it once in a while.” Sometimes I haven’t heard of them, but I can figure them out (those year...

Just For Fun
With everyone, myself included, busy with the holiday season, I’m repeating older blog posts. This one’s just for fun, posted way back in 2007 when the Hubster and I were in South Africa. The drink coasters at the Protea Hotel in Sea Point, a suburb of Cape Town weren’t your run-of-the-mill ads for the hotel or some libation. Instead, they brought a smile.
Doesn’t “expecting the unexpected” make the unexpected expected?
If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?

What’s Cooking Wednesday – Potato Latkes
Since it’s Hanukkah, what better recipe for today than traditional potato latkes (pancakes).
Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the war-destroyed temple. To purify the oil necessary to relight the menorah would take eight days. A flask of oil was found in the rubble, but only enough to burn for one day. Miraculously, it burned for the eight days they needed. (For a whole lot more information, you can go here.) So, foods fried in oil are eaten to commemorate the miracle. Which goes right...
