ABC's of Thanksgiving., Part 1
Gratitude can be hard to come by. That's why Thanksgiving is so important. Gratitude feeds your soul and produces joy and peace.
Plus, Thanksgiving doesn't ask for much. Just a day to calm down and get real with yourself about what a rich, full life you have. You may not have all you want, but if you live in America, you are among the richest people in the world regardless of your income. But the greatest blessings are rarely financial or material.
So I list 26 specific parts of my life for which I am grateful. I do it every year (and often more than that) to prevent stinginess and selfishness from taking over my soul. I share my list with you this year in three parts over the next three days. And invite you to craft your own list before Thanksgiving gets away from you and Christmas sweeps you into its frenzy.
A – AAA – they have saved my bacon three times this year. >>>>> Read Entire Post

Slaves: A Growth Industry
Shocker number of the morning: the global slave trade is a $32 billion a year industry, and growing each year. Had no idea of the scope and scale of this savage cruelty. Kudos to Forbes for highlighting Pierre Omidyar of Ebay, a man leading the charge to change that.
In print edition but not yet online. Worth your read, I >>>>> Read Entire Post

"Samuel"
Murphy Harpst Children's Center asked the kids who live there to write notes about what Christmas means to them. Here is the note "Samuel" wrote. He demonstrates why this ministry means so much to me and why I will be making a gift to help children like him who have been severely abused and have nowhere else to go. They receive hope and help at Murphy Harpst.
“This will be my
first time at Murphy-Harpst for a
Christmas. At my old home, times
were bad. All my parents’ money
went to drugs so I never really had
a true Christmas. This year I’m at
Murphy-Harpst, so this will be my
first ever true Christmas. Honestly,
between you and me, I don’t >>>>> Read Entire Post

First Time at Chick Fil A
Thank you for continuing to send me your stories about your first time eating at Chick-Fil-A. I'll keep sharing some of them here and also in the ads on my Sunday evening show.
This week's favorite;
My story about Chick-fila:
My mother worked at the Woolworth's in Greenbrier Mall back in the 60s and 70s. At one time the front of the store had a pet department but that was taken out in favor of a small counter with a few chairs tucked in front. Behind was a grill. It probably was 100 square feet at most, or at least it felt that cramped even if it wasn't. It was the very first venture for Chick-Fila outside of the home store in Hapeville. I worked in the store during my summer break from school and I probably ate chicken sandwiches every day. They became so popular that when a space came open in the mall, the silver counter in Woolworth's and all their sandwiches moved to its own space. >>>>> Read Entire Post

Religious Liberty Still Alive
NEWS UPDATE:
A Catholic-owned family business in Michigan does not have to comply with the provision of the new U.S. healthcare law that requires private employers to provide employees with health insurance that covers birth control, a federal judge in Detroit has ruled.
U.S. District Judge Robert Cleland, in a ruling late Wednesday, temporarily blocked the government from forcing the owner of Weingartz Supply Company, which sells outdoor power equipment, to include contraception in its health coverage of employees.
The ruling only affects the company’s Catholic proprietor, Daniel Weingartz, and the approximately 170 people who work for him. But it opens the door for other firms to seek relief on religious >>>>> Read Entire Post

Chick-Fil A from Michigan
I love sharing these stories of the first time you ate at a Chick-Fil-A. This one's from Dave in Michigan.
As for Chick-Fil-A, I first experienced their sandwich in Tifton, GA while visiting my son who worked in GA at the time. Later stops at Chick-Fil-A came when I would visit my youngest son at the University of Florida. I love their sandwiches, but they don’t have any stores here in my hometown and my sons now are relocated back to the Midwest. I’m tempted every time I see their commercials on SEC games that we still watch: Go Gators! (That ought to go over big in Bulldog >>>>> Read Entire Post

Hurricanes and Heroes
Super-storm Sandy wreaked havoc. Now Americans begin to rebuild and recover from the damage. The untold part of that rebuilding will come from the countless Americans who will leave home to help and/or give generously to support their fellow humans.
While in Lowe's this week to purchase some shelving, I met Mike. He recently started working there to earn money so he can invest most of his available time helping people through disaster relief efforts coordinated by his small Baptist church. Mike has helped in places like Joplin, MO; Anniston, AL; around the gulf coast after Katrina and other storms; and even in Japan after the tsunami/earthquake disaster there.
Mike and his wife live in an RV so that they can be flexible and ready to serve anywhere when the need arises. They raise money to help disaster victims, coordinate with other volunteers around the globe, and focus their lives on serving fellow human >>>>> Read Entire Post

Response to "Tracy"
In response to my blog and weekly email about hope and my friend, "Tracy," one listener wrote a poignant note to me. His email ilustrates the noble work that pastors and churches across the nation struggle to do to "stem the tide."
I read your newsletter this morning (10/25/12). My heart
breaks for your friend Tracy, she is one among millions.
Some have it worse and some not quite as rough. As Pastor of
a small church I come in contact with hunderds of people,
weekly, in need of assistance. The heart breaking truth is
that we have to turn so many away because we do not have the
resources to meet the needs of an overwhelming tide. Many of
the local churchs are in the same condition as my church,
most of the food pantrys (public and private) have an
increasing need of donations that, at times, have >>>>> Read Entire Post
