The Fighter

What an excellent movie The Fighter is! Far exceeded my expectations.

In fact, Christian Bale delivers what may be the finest acting performance I have seen this year, even better than Colin Firth in The King's Speech.

The Fighter is based on a true story of a boxer seeking his one chance at a title bout while being mentored/trained by his older brother (Bale). The older brother was a fighter in his own right but has devolved into a life of crack addiction and dysfunction.

Not much to dislike in this film. Inspiring, well-acted, and deeply moving story of redemption. Plus it has Amy Adams. What's not to like?!

I highly recommend it.

Good News and Sad News

Thank you for listening to the Allen Hunt Show. I want to share some good news and some sad news with you.

After much thought, careful consideration, and prayer, our board and I  have decided to no longer continue to syndicate the national edition of the Allen Hunt Show effective May 31.

As of June 1,  The Allen Hunt Show will return to its roots and air as a local Sunday show, only on News/Talk WSB in Atlanta from 6:00-9:00 pm.

This web site, my Facebook and Twitter accounts, and my emails will all continue in their present form. So feel free to keep hanging out with me and joining in the conversation in the only place in talk radio to discuss what's right and what's wrong.

I have accepted a new position as Vice-President for Strategy in partnership with my friend,   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Anger Management Detroit style

New report shows Detroit as the most angry city in America. No surprise there I suppose, given their precipitous loss of population over the last decade and the economic crater the city now calls home. Easily the maddest metropolis.

More surprising, to me anyway, is the fact that Baltimore and St. Petersburg ranked nearly as angry. St. Pete? Must be one angry bunch of retirees stirring around there.

My personal prescription for dealing with anger comes form St. Francis of Assisi and his famous prayer. Recite once. Then repeat.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

Embarrassed as a Georgian

Not a good day for Georgia.

Troy Davis may well have committed murder, but why would you intentionally execute someone where doubts and questions remain and persist? The Supreme Court rejected his latest efforts for a new trial.

Yet another reason why we should get rid of the death penalty once and for all in every state. Illinois just did it. Killing prisoners accomplishes nothing positive.

Death penalty cases cost the state more than 10 times that of a life without parole case. The death penalty has been shown to have little or no impact as a deterrent. Victims' families say that little healing occurs in their own souls once a perp has been executed. The death sentence is disproportionately applied against those who have the poorest defense lawyers.

And we have to admits, after more than a   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Dressing like that/

Excellent conversation on the show last night about this column from the Wall Street Journal. Fascinating perspective of a mom who wonders why she lets and pays for her tweener daughter to dress so provocatively.

But even more fascinating as she reflects on the fallout of her own sexual promiscuity from the 1970's. How does a mom who regrets her own profligacy seek to share the value and meaning of sex as well as the virtue of chastity with her daughter? A very real question for the post-fem, post-pill generation who always assumed that more sex was good but has matured into adulthood and parenthood with regrets and shame.

An interesting read to say the   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

New Year's Spring

Right now, 2 of my own 4 resolutions are tracking really well. Frankly, it is hard to keep New Year's resolutions. They disappear quickly from memory. In fact, one of mine (a specific goal in my personal prayer life) has been sidetracked a bit, and my 4th resolution (work on my new book) is languishing horribly. The beginning of April stirs my heart to resolve to keep these 4 goals fresh in my mind so that I can achieve the change in me that I desire for 2011.

You are three months in. Just 90 days ago, you set in place big bold resolutions to begin 2011. Spring has now sprung. So how are you doing?

Today marks the perfect time to take stock of your progress in your resolutions to grow forward in your life.

What is your goal? Quit smoking? Lose 10 pounds? Spend 15 minutes a day in prayer? Get a date to prom? Find a new job?

Take a moment TODAY to stoke the fire to be sure you are pursuing that goal with passion.

Email of the Week: Unions

Second edition of the emails of the week in response to my shows on unions in Wisconsin and the absurdity of PUBLIC employees having unions in the first place - to deal with their adversarial employers? The PUBLIC?

Both emails came from union men.

First, from Ben

Allen

I am a police Sgt on duty listening to your show. I am a union member and a government employee and a tax payer. I see the need to make cuts I do not see why the unions must be rendered powerless to achieve this. We are facing more cuts to the police department but our union has agreed to open our contract and negotiate to save jobs.

And the second from George

Hello Allen Hunt,

Good Show Tonight.

I m a Union Retiree. Worked for a Grocery Store in Southern California for 19 years that was a Union Job. United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1442.

A Private Sector job that, as you stated, was to help protect the   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Grant Hill Wisdom

Tonight's show will feature a conversation around race and the interaction between Grant Hill and Jalen Rose. Both are impressive men for a variety of reasons.

After I watched the Fab 5 documentary over the weekend, I was glad to see this response from Grant Hill in the New York Times.

Grace? What Grace?

I have not shared favorite emails received with you in a while. This past week brought some doozies.

These two have to be among my all time favorites. Written in response to the show where we discussed why it is wrong for the father of a murdered boy to pledge to kill the convicted perpetrator when he is released from prison this August in Rhode Island.

This email came in - with an address of aspire4grace!

Can't blame the father at all. Killing the pervert may not heal the father, but it sure would go along way to helping the healing start. This just disgusts me.

I feel that there's nothing wrong with it, because what happened to eye for an eye. If the justice system won't follow through with it's job, no reason the father shouldn't. I feel for the father completely. This is a really   >>>>>   Read Entire Post
