Dragging Mom in the Lake

Mike was an independent 13 year old boy. So when his family of 5 went to the lake, Mike did not think anyone would notice, or care, if he left for a while to help a friend with a paper route. He told no one that he was leaving or what he would be doing.

Mom noticed. A good mother has what my wife calls a "uterine detector," to track her kids and sense when something is wrong. Mike was gone for two hours, but Mom had no idea where he was. She frantically searched the camp site and the lake for any sign of her beloved son. No clues. Nothing. So Mom called the sheriff, who arrived with the search team prepared to drag the lake in an effort to find Mike's body.

When Mike stumbled back into the lake area after helping his friend, he found his mother desperately dragging the lake herself with her own feet. Fully exhausting every effort to find the one she loved. She grabbed him and refused   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Flocko in Concord, AL

Flocko, our evening engineer, who also goes by the name of Matt Fields, served in disaster relief in Alabama this past weekend. He shared his thoughts with me about the experience.

Please continue to pray for the good people of Alabama, and I invite you to give through our site to the Red Cross to assist in this effort to bring help and hope to those who are hurting.

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 is a day that many Americans will never forget.  For so many, the day began as an ordinary day, but ended far from ordinary.  Between 4:45 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Central Time, a mile-wide long-track wedge tornado ripped the heart of Tuscaloosa, Alabama in Tuscaloosa County and began a path of devastation, destruction, and decimation that essentially ended in the little town of Ringgold in Northwest Georgia.  The National Weather Service later categorized the   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Well done President Obama, Navy SEALS, and American persistence

Been discussing this all day on Facebook but wanted to update here too.

Well done to President Obama, our Navy SEALS, our troops and intelligence community for a persistent effort to find Bin Laden. This ten year effort demonstrates that America can match the patience of Muslim terrorists. 10 years for this one moment. Outstanding!

The most fascinating portion of this story to me is the role of technology. While President Obama watched the raid with his team in the Situation Room, a Pakistani local tweeted events live as they happened without at first realizing that this was the Big Kahuna. There are no secrets in the world   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Leadership Secrets

Borrowed a book from Andy about 2 years ago, and I just got around to reading it.

The Most Effective Organization in the U.S.

Leadership Secrets of the Salvation Army

by Robert A Watson and Ben Brown

Excellent read on how the Salvation Army serves the weakest and poorest of the poor, the most desperate of the addicted, and does so with grace and clear purpose.

Their secret? Clear focus.TTo preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army does not separate the two aspects of their mission: to preach and to serve. They are intimately wed, not two distinct tasks. That is why Peter Drucker called them "by far the most effective organization in the US." Pretty high praise.

All in all, the book is a helpful overview with real insight into how the Salvation   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Amazing Heroism

I am headed to Washington, DC this weekend to emcee an

In my preparation for the event, I just came across this amazing story of a 30 year old mother who learned she had cancer and then sacrificed herself for her unborn child. Heroic indeed.

May it inspire you and it did   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Beginning not End

Christians' most important week of the year is underway. Good Friday draws near; Easter lures us toward Sunday.

All of which reminds me of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Who? Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran pastor in Germany as Hitler was rising to power. Hitler imprisoned thousands of Catholic priests and Protestant pastors in concentration camps as he sought to impose his will on the Church in Germany. Bonhoeffer offered resistance. He organized an underground community of believers to speak out against the Holocaust and false worship of Hitler, much like the function the underground Church in China serves today. Bonhoeffer courageously created a seminary to train pastors for the future who would not be under Hitler's thumb.

Eventually, Hitler's thugs arrested Bonhoeffer in 1943 and ultimately placed him in Flossenburg camp. There, Bonhoeffer inspired and helped nourish the souls of his fellow   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Holy Monday

As Holy Week begins in full, my spiritual and prayer focus this week is centered on the words of St. Catherine of Siena

Be eager to increase your holy desire, and not to be satisfied with little things, because He wants great things!

May God use this week to draw you closer to the holy version He intends you to   >>>>>   Read Entire Post

Dud Date

Two mediocre movies rented over the weekend. Very little viewing pleasure to be garnered from these two. Oh well, at least The Fighter and the King's Speech have given me greta entertainment value of late.

Morning Glory - In general, I am a Rachel McAdams fan. She does good work, but this performance where she plays a young television news producer paired with Harrison Ford as an old cynical news anchor lacks chemistry. Worst of all, it lacks much plot. Boring and predictable Two minutes into the movie, you know where this is heading. Then, the acting is lifeless so you do not even enjoy getting there.

AHS Grade: D

Due Date - I had high hopes for this pairing of Zach G and Robert Downey, Jr. The two are thrown together in an improbable trip across the country to try to get Downey to the hospital to be with his wife for the birth   >>>>>   Read Entire Post
