Traitors' Gate Release Day
Well. Here's a sobering post (on not being able to find TG at bookstores) for me to read on the official USA release day of Traitors' Gate. I'd be interested to hear if any of you are having trouble finding a copy of the book in your town/city. I know it is available online, but online only goes so far.
Meanwhile, in celebration of release day, I want to post what is just about my favorite outrigger canoe paddling video up on You Tube. It's short (under two minutes); it's breathtaking (look

"Please tell the world how much we love life"
Some days ago I reposted from elsewhere a letter from a young Iranian student about to head out onto the streets to protest and fully aware that she was placing her own life in danger.
Now
idiomagic hears the heartbreaking news of Fayah's fate as one of the leaders protesting at Neda's gravesite.

Traitors' Gate: Crossroads, book 3
Tomorrow is the official USA release date of Traitors' Gate, third of the Crossroads trilogy (or, as Mihir Wanchoo has suggested over at Fantasy Book Critic, the "Gate" trilogy), although I have it on good authority that some people have already bought or observed copies in the wild.
Just to clarify (as I will repeatedly over the next few weeks, so my apologies in advance for the repetition), Spirit Gate, Shadow Gate, and Traitors' Gate form a trilogy, with a beginning, middle, and end. I plan t

Emotional Investment in Characters
faunaphile asked:You obviously put a lot of thought and care into creating and writing your characters. Over the span of the series I also have to imagine you've had to make some pretty hard decisions about the fates of those characters to preserve the integrity of the story. Because of the amount of time you've spent with your characters, did you find yourself emotionally invested in them to any degree? If so, did you have any particularly sad or joyful moments regarding the fates of those char

"Come on, you sexy bitches!"
A melancholy morning, with rain and clouds (what is left of former Hurricane Felicia). In Hawaii it is customary after the death of a surfer or paddler, or anyone really who is part of the aina (the land in its largest sense), for family and friends to go out on the water and spread flowers on the waves and, possibly, the ashes of the deceased. That's what I did this morning: I drove out to the North Shore in order to be part of a group who went out with a small family group to spread flowers

Traitors' Gate - 9 day countdown & a review
Traitors' Gate will be published in the USA by Tor Books on August 18 (you may see it in some bookstores before that date). The Orbit UK pub date is 3 September.
I've seen a Publishers' Weekly review (positive, thank goodness) linked here on the B&N site. (scroll down)
and this wonderful review of the entire trilogy by Liz Burgess at Sequential Tart. (it's not too spoilery)
Let me know if you see any other reviews. I would appreciate it. This final countdown to publication is always a bit emotio

Which come first, the Highroad trilogy or the Jaran books?
Chronologically, within the universe's timeline, which come first? The Jaran books, or the Highroad books?
The Jaran books.
Yes, the Highroad trilogy and the Jaran novels are set in the same universe (I am totally into consolidating universes, and have even written a fantasy trilogy set in the science fictional Jaran universe, which is -- you guessed it -- the Crossroads series).
In my personal life timeline, I wrote the novel Jaran first, in some very early and quite horrible drafts. Then I wrot

Juggling Writing and Motherhood (Parenthood)
I am still setting up and settling in to my new office, which entails among other things going through shelves and containers and sorting, tossing, revaluating, and filing Stuff.
Among which Stuff I found a copy of the February 1991 LOCUS in which I was interviewed by Charlie Brown (who has, alas, recently passed away; he and I shared a fondness for the composer Dmitri Shostakovich--in his CD collection Brown had a very interesting piano reduction of the 10th Symphony. But I digress.)
