One Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
I've had a chance to read a pre-pub copy of N.K. Jemisin's One Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. It will be published in Feb 2010, and is the first of a connected trilogy (not one story, but three stories set in the same world and with some connected threads, or so I understand).
Told from the point of view of Yeine, a young woman who finds out, quite abruptly, that she is one of three potential heirs to a rulership she never dreamed of wanting much less being forced to compete for, this is a story ...

Grinding to Valhalla interview
An interview with me, one with a gaming angle, on Grinding to Valhalla (an awesome name for a blog).
I answer the all important question: if I were to play an MMO (which I don't, due to my desire to have a life and get work done), what kind of character would I pick to be?

WFC, John Ford, Lamentation, The Prefect, and ?
Tonight's is a variety post
1: who is attending WFC?
2: I just saw this fabulous jacket quote from David Drake, writing about the Crossroads trilogy:
Kate Elliott's Crossroads series has the feel and color of a John Ford western. The characters are both believable and larger-than-life, and there's plenty of action.
I gotta say, I don't at all mind being compared to a John Ford western.
3: Good readings:
Lamentation, by Ken Scholes. Just finished this and fortunately, since I'm touring with him...

Discussion (Spoilers): Traitors' Gate & Crossroads Trilogy
If anyone wants to discuss Traitors' Gate or the Crossroads Trilogy, here's the place to do it. Or you can ask spoilerific questions. All this in the comments section, if you want. Those who haven't read, aren't going to read, could care less, or aren't finished yet and don't want spoilers: Avoid.

Whoa! Unexpected!
My favorite excerpt from "the remarks":
"Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning.
After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, 'Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday.'
And then Sasha added, 'Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up.'
So it's -- it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective."
I knew it! I knew it was Malia who was the dog person in that house!

A Mundane Cleaning Question
Yes, today's post is a mundane cleaning question.
Let me attempt to explain.
We have fairly new windows (not wood) in which one half slides in a groove to open up half the window. The grooves are narrow and about half an inch (maybe slightly more) deep, and hard even to fit a finger into. Is there a smart way to clean these? Some nifty implement that would allow me to go around the house and clean out all those grooves on a regular basis so I don't get a huge dust/dirt/damp buildup (our wind...

Red Cliff and Red Cliff 2
Okay, for those of you who know immediately what I am talking about, will a Hong Kong-purchased DVD version of the films play on USA DVD players? If not, how can I get DVDs of both films (I am completely uninterested in viewing the watered down single film that is to be the USA release) that will play on my (USA) DVD layer? Is there a way? I hope!!!

Flat and Boring
Another reader question, which I'm paraphrasing in this case:
Everything I write right now is flat, and boring, and doesn't work. What things can I do to get myself out of this rut?
My answer tends to be "write through it" asin "accept that what you're writing is flat and boring and just keep going with what you're doing, eventually you will probably hit a better vein of flow."
But I'm wondering what you folks do. Do you have specific tricks, or games you play with your expectations? Ways to ...
