Star Trek: Alas, Count Me Underwhelmed

I was pretty meh about Star Trek. And my sons also found it kind of boring.

I feel like I missed the entire re-boot aspect of the film. Where was it? In the end, everything became just exactly like what was broadcast 40 years ago, only with shinier special effects and more cliched writing. There was a single moment where my ears perked up, feeling a sense of unpredictability--when Young Spock is captain and has Young Kirk tossed off the ship for insubordination--but, indeed, it was but a temp

Traitors' Gate - ARC WINNER

Alayne McGregor of Ottawa, Canada, has won the drawing for a copy of the Traitors' Gate Advanced Readers Copy.

I have one more copy of the ARC, but this time I am going to have a contest in which entrants have to do something. This will happen as soon as I get a good idea for a contest. Help me out with suggestions!

Giveaway! Traitors' Gate ARC

CONTEST! GIVEAWAY!

I have a copy of the ARC (Advance Readers Copy) of Traitors’ Gate, the third book of the Crossroads trilogy, to give away (the book won't be published until August/Sept). The ARC is a copy of the final text, bound and sent to reviewers. It has no illustration and is not a hardcover; it will also contain some typos (which will have been fixed in the final).

Here's the deal:

1) Send an email to Kate.Elliott@(no-spam)sff.net with the header ARC. Remember to remove the (no-spam)

The Lame Phase

Dear Book,

The early days were nothing but one long golden summer morning awash in light and joy. We were infatuated, you and I. Nothing could be better.

For longer than I thought possible, the glow of health, youth, awesomeness, and vigor radiated from us whenever we were together.

And yet now, the bloom fades. The essential lameness of the relationship intrudes. The concept? The characters? The plot? What was I thinking? How could I ever have supposed this would work between us?

Yet the ch

Bo Obama

Look, I shamelessly enjoy the Obama family. Also, I am a parent AND a dog owner.

So today while at the gym I had the opportunity to watch the introduction of Bo on CNN. Bo is extremely cute, indeed. My overall impression is that Malia is over the moon about this and quite excited to be embracing the leash of dog ownership, while Sasha (who usually seems the more outgoing of the two) is a bit more skeptical. I would bet that Malia will be put in charge of obedience training (her and her mom).

the Values of the Humanities, and SFF

I seem to be contributing little but asking for advice lots these days.

As I mentioned earlier, I'll be attending a program called Celebrate Reading this coming Saturday at UHawaii-Manoa. The program is intended for readers in general, but with a particular focus on middle and high school (and college) readers.

In addition to the two short program items I'm leading (one for students who have read JARAN and one on Reading and Writing Fantasy), I've been asked to write up a short handout that can b

Amazon Rank

Amazon Rank.

This may likely be over in its main manifestation by tomorrow, due to the internet firestorm, but it's been fascinating to watch the eruption of righteous anger!

Agents, Publishers, Rejection, Aspiring Writers

The ever-fabulous Justine Larbalestier writes a post on Agents and Rejection that is well worth reading.

Go on. You know you want to. I'll wait until you're back.

For those of you waiting around for the ones who went to read that blog post, I wanted to mention that I purchased a new paddle today. Actually, I ordered it about 6 weeks ago from Mana Blades, and today the man who makes them met me in a parking lot and he handed me the blade and I handed him the check and we were both very happy.
