Most of you know that I’ve been blogging since early 2004 and that my blog was/is called the Nocturnal Journal after the fictitious newspaper I created in my first book, Daughter of Darkness. The blog has sadly had to move from platform to platform over the course of 19 years, but it is what it is.

Since I’ll be putting out 20-year anniversary editions of The Daughter of Darkness books before long (can you believe this year is the 19th year since they released), I thought it was time to get NJ going again.

Since I’ve dusted off my blog writing skills and have been putting them to good use again, I thought it would be fun to go back to what I know.

I’m spotlighting the Fab13’s Robyn Peterman today! Whoohoo! I adore Robyn. She leaves me in stitches all the time, and we should probably get this out of the way, I’ve nearly peed myself more than once laughing while I talk to her. It’s safe to say her books nearly do me in and really test the limit of my bladder because they are always filled to the brim with funny!

About the Book:

Whoever said life begins at forty must have been heavily medicated, drunk, or delusional. 
 
Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. 
 
But as they say, all good things come to an end. I’d honestly love to know who ’they’ are and rip them a new one.
 
One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed and breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job—deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there. I think they need my help, but since I don’t speak dead, we’re having a few issues. 
 
To add to the heap of trouble, there’s a new dangerously smokin’ hot lawyer at the firm who won’t stop giving me the eye. My BFF is
thrilled with her new frozen face, thanks to her plastic surgeon, her alimony check, and the miracle of Botox. And then there’s the little conundrum that I’m becoming way too attached to my ghostly squatters… Like Cher, I’d like to turn back time. Now.
 
No can do.  
 
Whatever. I have wine, good friends, and an industrial-sized box of superglue. What could possibly go wrong?
 
Everything, apparently.
 
All in all, it’s shaping up to be a wonderful midlife crisis…

Today I’m focusing on Darynda Jones, another of the Fab13, and her first paranormal women’s fiction book “Betwixt.” You should know going into this that you’d be hard-pressed to find me a book by Darynda that I don’t love. This one proves she’s a master of her craft, regardless of the genre!

About the Book:

Divorced, desperate, and destitute, former restaurateur Defiance Dayne finds out she has been bequeathed a house by a complete stranger. She is surprised, to say the least, and her curiosity gets the better of her. She leaves her beloved Phoenix and heads to one of the most infamous towns in America: Salem, Massachusetts.

She’s only there to find out why a woman she’s never met would leave her a house. A veritable castle that has seen better days. She couldn’t possibly accept it, but the lawyer assigned to the case practically begs her to take it off her hands, mostly because she’s scared of it. The house. The inanimate structure that, as far as Dephne can tell, has never hurt a fly.

Though it does come with some baggage. A pesky neighbor who wants her gone. A scruffy cat who’s a bit of a jerk. And a handyman bathed in ink who could moonlight as a supermodel for GQ.

She decides to give it three days, and not because of the model. She feels at home in Salem. Safe. But even that comes to a screeching halt when people begin knocking on her door day and night, begging for her help to locate their lost objects.

Come to find out, they think she’s a witch. And after a few mysterious mishaps, Dephne is beginning to wonder if they’re right.

My Thoughts:In Salem, the magic of the past meets the secrets of the present.

From the very first page, I was hooked! Darynda’s humor is always so spot-on for me. This book showcases that, as well as her ability to weave a story in a way that seems almost effortless. I highly recommend “Betwixt: A Paranormal Women’s Fiction Novel” to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal romance with a touch of mystery and self-discovery.

I was captivated by this paranormal women’s fiction book. Lorna has been kicked in the lady balls by life. While she’s at her husband’s funeral, she gets a rather eye-opening truth bomb dropped on her. She’s left high-tailing it out of town to put roots down anywhere but a spot that knows her previous among the living no-good-son-of-a…. what? I can judge the man if I want.

Back to Lorna. Wanting some closure, she and her new group of friends séance him back. They get a little more than they bargained for. Oh… I almost forgot about William. He’s the love interest and a thousand times better than that no-good-son-of-a…

I absolutely love the Order of Magic series and really hope you binge-read them all! I’m also hoping Michelle does a spin-off of the series.

My first introduction to Elizabeth was her 2013 novel, The Scribe. Let me be the first to say…wow! Loved it! Now, jumping into her paranormal women’s fiction work, I’ll be kicking things off with Suddenly Psychic (spoiler alert–loved it too).

My Thoughts:

Elizabeth Hunter’s story is well-written, with well-developed characters. The attention to detail and relatable issues in Robin’s personal life were amazing! Another huge plus for me was the female friendships. They added a dimension and reality to the novel.

My Thoughts:

Midlife Bounty Hunter is an action-packed perfect blending of urban fantasy meets paranormal women’s fiction. Shannon Mayer is well-known for her amazing character development, and this book is proof (ha, see what I did there) of why that is. Breena leaps off the page as a 41-year-old, down-on-her luck no thanks to “Himself.” I loved following her journey of self-discovery, and have to admit I cackled more than once while reading this. Can’t wait to dive into the next book in the Forty Proof series!

It’s a slow-burn romance, full of unexpected twists and turns, and I found myself laughing out loud at the antics of the characters. The writing is witty and sharp, and it really captures what it’s like to be a woman starting over in her 40s. Highly recommended! Pick up your copy today!
