March Featured Reads

Ah, March. It’s that time of year again when the weather begins to warm and the days get longer. And it’s always the perfect time to dig into a new read or revisit an old favorite.
March Madness: Books Featuring Mad CharactersIf you’re looking for a good book about madness this month, here are two classic titles worth checking out:
• Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart (1843) tells the story of an unnamed narrator who murders an old man because he is driven mad by his victim’s “evil eye” – only to find himself haunted by his victim’s vengeful ghost afterward.

• Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), one of literature’s most famous mad scientists, tells the story of Victor Frankenstein and his creation – a creature so feared and misunderstood that he becomes consumed with rage (see what I did there, used mad in terms of rage) and hatred for humanity after being rejected by them.

March brings us more than just warmer weather; it also brings us plenty of madness!
Check out these featured March reads:A Streak of Lightning by Michelle M. Pillow

Lightning isn’t the only thing streaking in small-town Wisconsin.
Warlock Raibeart MacGregor is on the prowl and looking for his true love. He has only one question for any lassie he meets, “Will ya marry me?” With his sanity often questioned by those who know him best, Raibeart believes there is a method to his madness. At least he hopes so. He’s convinced his true love exists, but he just can’t seem to find her.
Plagued by nightmares, he’s compelled to run himself to exhaustion each night to keep them at bay. The fact that he prefers to drop the kilt while doing so is just a bonus. But when those nightmares begin to bleed into reality, he realizes the woman he’s been searching for is literally the one tormenting his dreams.
Katherine Galbraith has been imprisoned by magick for so long that she can’t even remember what her crime was beyond the vague impression that she once loved a warlock. Bound to a world that never changes, she spends her days wishing for an end. But when prison walls begin to crack, she must decide if she wants a second chance at lost love or if that love is the reason for all her suffering.
Diver’s Heart by K.A. Knight
The first time I met Tyler Lucas, I was seventeen. All it took was one summer to fall in love with him…but I fell hard, too hard, and not just for him…
A series of bad choices and actions causes me to leave him and our family behind. I have to find myself once again, and to do that I must dive deep.
At twenty-four, I’m a world-class diver and explorer, one of the best. But when my newest job collides with my past, will we be able to work together, especially with the stakes so high?
Down below, things can easily go wrong, and when they do, we only have two options—work together to survive, or fall apart and die.
Down we go, right into the abyss.

I hate the Harlequin boys.
Fox, JJ, Chase and Maverick. The four names tattooed onto my heart more permanently than the ink on my skin.
Once upon a time, they broke my heart, stole my life and sent me away from everything I’d ever known.
But they don’t just live in this town anymore, they rule it. And the view here may be beautiful, but the sun, sea and sand hide dark secrets.
The gangs.
The lies.
The violence.
It all lurks beneath a veil so thin that once you’ve seen through it, you can never close your eyes to the truth again. But I don’t plan on closing my eyes.
I have four devils set in my sights. And this dead girl no longer has anything to lose.
This is an enemies to lovers dark romance where the girl will end up with multiple love interests and all of the characters are in their late twenties. TW: this series features gangs, violence, dark romance and jealous/possessive themes.

Five years ago, my fiancé disappeared. He left me with a wedding dress I’d never wear. Left me with the kind of scars that can’t be healed. The man I built my future on vanished like a ghost. All that remained were my broken heart and a million unanswered questions.
Until a mysterious stranger arrives in town.
Tall, dark, and dangerous, Kage is as full of secrets as he is sex appeal. Though I know he’s hiding something, I’m drawn to him like a moth to flame.
Heat crackles between us with every look, desire flares into passion, and I fall hard, helpless to resist.
But then I discover he’s been sent to collect on an unpaid debt from my missing fiancé…

What he is interested in is a mate.

How Valentine’s Day has Influenced the Romance Book Industry

The holiday of love and romance — Valentine’s Day — is steeped in history, culture, and literature. From its beginnings as a religious festival to its modern-day celebration of love and affection, this special day has no shortage of stories to tell. In more recent times, the holiday has also had an impact on the romance book industry. Let’s take a look at the history behind Valentine’s Day and how it influences the romance book industry today.
A Brief History of Valentine’s DayValentine’s day can be traced back to Ancient Rome, where it began as a religious festival called Lupercalia. During this festival, men would sacrifice goats for fertility and purity before then having a feast which included women being paired off with men by lottery. This tradition continued until 269 A.D when Pope Gelasius I declared February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day and replaced Lupercalia with a Christian feast day in honor of Saint Valentine who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity.
During the Middle Ages, people believed that birds chose their mates on February 14th, so it became known as the “Day of Love” or “The Lover’s Festival.” By this time, poems were circulating throughout Europe about love and romance in honor of St. Valentine’s Day, which sparked an interest in writing about romantic relationships and thus began what we now know as the romance novel genre.
The Impact on Today’s LiteratureToday’s celebration of love is very different from what it was centuries ago, but its influence can still be felt in literature — particularly in the romance book industry. In fact, according to data from Bookstat (a market intelligence company), romance books make up around 10% of all print books sold each year! That means that over 200 million books are sold every year just within this genre alone! And while authors don’t necessarily have to write about Valentine’s day itself—romance books inspired by Valentines’ Day are incredibly popular around this time of year due to its association with love, passion, and relationships—all concepts that readers enjoy exploring through these books!
Valentine’s day is one of our oldest holidays — one steeped in history and culture — yet it is still celebrated today with enthusiasm all over the world! Not only does it bring joy to those who celebrate it, but it also has had a huge influence on literature — most notably on the ever-popular romance book industry! As such, if you’re looking for something special to read this Valentine’s Day season, then why not try out one of these wonderful stories; you won’t be disappointed!

Opposites attract?
In theory, maybe.
In reality, doubtful.
When my brother’s best friend asks me to fake marry him to secure a business deal he desperately needs, I laugh in his face. Me help Carter Harrington? That’s split-your-pants, rip-roaring hilarious. I don’t even like him.
Besides, no one would believe I’m Carter’s wife. It’s ridiculous.
He’s tall, blond, and attention-grabbing gorgeous. I’m short, curvy, awkward… and usually invisible.
He’s never met someone he couldn’t charm. I can barely talk to friends, much less strangers.
He’s a workaholic that lives and breathes money and business. I prefer to lose myself in my art.

Ryot Bisley is my husband.
Yes, the former third baseman for the Chicago Bobbies and absolute heart throb of the Windy City. That Ryot Bisley.
The first time I ran into him, he was grumpy, a horrific host, and left me on his sofa with nothing but a nylon baseball flag to use as a blanket.
The second time, he reluctantly bought me dinner, stared at my chest the entire night, and still sported that permanent frown.
The third time . . . well, that was a game changer. His smile captured me, his teasing charmed me, and his touches excited me.

At least not until I discovered his secret.
It was time to teach the billionaire that money couldn’t fix everything.
Especially not us.

About the Book:
True love requires a little research and development in a funny, heart-racing romance by Sariah Wilson, the bestselling author of The Paid Bridesmaid .

The answer is Craig’s empathetic (and handsome) CEO half brother, Marco. The makeup mogul knows Craig for the ridiculously competitive rival he is. Whatever Marco has, Craig wants. That can be Anna, if she’s game to play.
All Anna and Marco have to do is pretend they’re falling in love and let the rumors begin. If the experiment in attraction works, a jealous Craig will swoop in and give Anna her happily ever after—if it weren’t for one hitch in the plan. There’s more to Marco than meets the eye. With every fake date, Anna’s feelings are starting to become dizzyingly real.

Demonic Desires by Mandy M. RothReform isn’t in every bad boy’s future…or past…
Ava Fenaly knows a thing or two about magik, and she knows exactly what she’s doing when she summons a demon in her bedroom. Well, almost. Ava is convinced the exhilarating night of passion that follows is all a dream. It has to be, because she’s dead set against revisiting her past—and the horrors she left behind long ago. F
or the last three hundred plus years, Donatus Manlian has been living a peaceful life. Lonely, but peaceful. When the demon he has kept carefully locked within for centuries finally breaks free and responds to Ava’s call, the peace—and the loneliness—are gone. Now Donatus is forced to revisit tragedies long buried as he protects Ava from the evil that pursues her. But another evil lies within him—and now that it’s been awakened, the demon wants free.

Malina MacGregor is more than just a delicate flower in need of manly protection, but you wouldn’t know it by the slew of male family members who show up anytime she tries to go on a date. She’s a powerful warlock in her own right, if only they would let her prove herself.
Fine, sure, she’s made some poor choices in men in the past—like the demon she mistakenly hooked up with in Las Vegas years ago. But that was then, and this is now, and she more than made up for that mistake.

The Demon King has started a new monarchy in the United States.
It used to be that the president was the most powerful person in the country. That all changed when Wrath crossed over to our world. Nothing could stop him. Nothing can kill him. Eventually we all bowed at his altar.
Now there are websites dedicated to worshipping him. Countless internet memes about how ridiculously gorgeous he is. And yeah, I can admit he’s fine as hell. But he’s a villain to end all villains. There’s no way I’m falling prey to that.
That is until I accidentally cross paths with the Demon King. Wrath demands I bow to him. For a second, I almost do. Being around him is…consuming. But dying is better than surrendering and I refuse.
Except when Wrath turns his dark, dangerous power on me…it doesn’t work. And now the villain is looking at me like I’m the enemy.
I manage to get away, but word quickly spreads — Rain Low, a nobody from a tourist town is somehow immune to the Demon King.
Now Wrath is hellbent on destroying me and those who want to destroy him are hellbent on using me.
But I’m no heroine. And I’m certainly no villain. But if I’m going to survive, I have to play the game. If the Demon King wants a fight, he’s going to get one.
Note: Ruthless Demon King is the first book in a villain enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance trilogy. You can expect lots of tension, action, twists and hate kissing, and a villain you love to love. Ruthless Demon King is a full length novel and ends on a cliffhanger but the trilogy is now complete. Please check the author’s website for CWs/TWs.

Demon King Thorne has found his fated mate…
And nothing will stop him from claiming her.
Not even the elf warrior determined to steal her heart.
The moment Thorne set eyes on the mortal huntress Sable, he knew she was his one true mate. The fiery, dangerous female awakened hungers he had never experienced before, a dark craving and passion that has consumed him in their time apart. As the lunar cycle wanes, she enters his world again and nothing will stand in the way of him claiming his forever with her—not the relentless assault from the Fifth Realm or the dark elf male determined to seduce her out of his grasp.
Intent on achieving the coveted position of commander at Archangel, Sable leads her small team into the dark underworld and the Third Realm, to a war where her allies are the very creatures she normally hunts—vampires, werewolves, fae and demons. Her eagerness to lead the deadly mission has everything to do with winning her promotion, and nothing to do with the kingdom’s brash, lethally seductive demon king—a king who stirred fierce desire and wildfire heat in her with just a look and an innocent touch when they first met, and has been in her wicked dreams ever since.
As the gathering storm between rivals unleashes irresistible passion that flares white-hot and the heat of the battle brings life-shattering realisations, can Sable place her duty before her heart? Or will she surrender to her deepest desires and be claimed by a demon king?

How was I supposed to know that the incantations scrawled inside of it worked? That the first one I read would open a portal into a demon plane — or that the next one was an unbreakable vow to the seven foot tall shadow monster I unwittingly summoned into my bedroom?
He says his name is Malphas, that he’s something called a Sombra demon, and I’m his mate.
Monster, demon… whatever he is, his muscles are bigger than my head, and that club between his legs… I don’t know if mate means the same thing to him as it does me, but he’s gotta be kidding.
Spoiler alert: he’s not.
Mal has been waiting for more than a thousand years for the one woman meant for him. He’s convinced that’s me, and he’s willing to do anything to prove it. And maybe there’s something really wrong with me because, before long, I find myself eager to let him try…
* Mated to the Monster (~55,000 words) is the first in a monster romance series about the Sombra demons, a race of shadow-based monsters who will do anything to claim their females. Mal and Shannon might come from different worlds, but when it comes to fate, lust, and forever… they might just be a perfect match.

Paranormal Romance Books#1 Zodiac Aligned by Elizbeth BriggsMy true mate wants me back—and I need his help to free the Zodiac Wolves.
After being rejected by the man I love, I find myself packless once more. Kaden says he’ll do whatever it takes to win me back, though I’m not sure I can forgive him.
But to save the Zodiac Wolves, we’ll need to work together to uncover the truth about the mating bonds and the sinister magic that controls our lives.

I walk into the bar with my pack, and I scent her straight away.
She’s lying behind the counter with blood trailing from an injury to her head. My desire to protect her stuns me almost as much as her beauty.
But it’s the smell of her blood that stuns me the most—it’s something not quite human.
When she wakes up, her fear tells me all I need to know. She definitely thinks she’s mortal.

After the death of my mother and her Bonded, I was relieved to find my own Bonds. I was sure everything would be okay if I had them. It wasn’t. The fate of our people is in my hands and I know we’re better off if I’m alone. After five years on the run, I’m caught and dragged back to face the men I ran away from. I thought I was doing the right thing. Now, I’m not so sure. North, Nox, Gryphon, Atlas, and Gabe may never forgive me but one thing is for sure. I won’t ever forgive myself.

Plucked out of the Collector’s Pens, auctioned off to a vampire contingent, and sent across the ocean to the Alpha Territories was not exactly how I planned to spend my week.
Actually, scratch that. I had planned the first bit. But I was supposed to be sold to the werewolves so I could save my friend from a fate worse than death. Instead, the bloodsuckers have me and so far? It’s not going great. I’ve been shoved into a corset and made to look like an extra on the cast of Bridgerton, all to take part in the Harvest Games—think The Bachelor set in the 1800s, but the men are all vampires, and then add a decidedly terrifying Squid Games element to the mix.

A new life, a new job, a new orc husband . . . Wait, isn’t he supposed to be my boss?
After my ex announces his wedding to someone other than me, I’m eager to leave town. A new life and a new job are just what I need to restore my mojo. On the way to my destination, I overnight at a hotel where edible unmentionables and a tattooed orc construction worker rock my world. I sneak out the next morning, figuring I’ll never see him again.

The truth has come to light… but can I ever trust my men again?
After weeks of cruel hostility, the guys I swore to save know how wrong they were—at least about what I did four years ago. Now that they’ve seen my horrifying new power, will they decide I’m an enemy after all?

When it rains, it pours…and sometimes love finds you even when you can’t find yourself.
Fate has given me a second chance at the happiness I once knew in the odd Southern town of Grimm Cove. But only if I can come to terms with some rather eye-opening revelations. Supernaturals are a real thing. I’m a witch. My high school sweetheart, who happens to be the Chief of Police in Grimm Cove, is my fated mate and a wolf-shifter. Ghosts exist and can be very nosy and meddlesome. Someone is murdering witches left and right. And last but not least, my ex-husband’s barely legal arm candy is taking fatal attraction to new levels of Hell.

Julian Rousseaux has a problem. He’s single, and for the world’s wealthiest vampires, the social season is about to begin. Julian would rather stake himself than participate in the marriage market. But as the eldest, eligible Rousseaux he’s expected to find a wife before the season ends—whether he likes it or not.

Nina Cole thought escaping a serial killer would be the hardest thing she ever had to face. When a reporter comes sniffing around wanting her to relive the trauma, she feels she has no choice but to pack up and move to a place where no one knows her. Starting over in her forties is easier said than done. Bad memories aren’t the only thing chasing her. The killer might be in jail, but now it looks like something much more sinister from beyond the grave is hunting her.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

These stories can take place in a futuristic world or on a distant planet, or they can be set in the here and now, maybe with an alternate history even. Some might even involve time travel or apocalyptic. They could even involve parallel worlds. Basically, if you can dream it, the science fiction genre can achieve it.
Science Fiction Romance Sub-GenresThere are numerous sub-genres that are housed under the Sci-fi romance banner. Whether it’s a fantasy sci-fi romance, a space opera romance, a cyberpunk romance novel, genetic engineering, or a dystopian romance novel, there is something for everyone in this genre. These books may also contain elements of adventure, paranormal, mystery, horror, and suspense, with varying romance tropes layered in. From friends to lovers to second chances at love, there is something for every romance book lover. The romance within them can vary in heat level from slow burn to spicy.
What Makes a Good Sci-Fi Romance Book?Sci-fi romance books have become increasingly popular over the years due to their unique combination of genres, engaging storylines, and relatable characters. When it comes to sci-fi romance books, the key is finding an exciting balance between the genres.
The sci-fi elements should be strong enough to provide an interesting new setting and potentially unexpected plot twists, while the romance should be strong enough to give readers a journey that is both exciting and emotionally satisfying (and I cannot stress this enough, if it’s labeled romance, it needs to have a HEA–happy ever after.)
In addition to a compelling story, books in the sci-fi romance genre should also have well-developed characters. The characters should be able to make meaningful, deep connections with each other despite their extraordinary circumstances.
Must-Read Sci-Fi Romance BooksGenetic EngineeringAn example of this would be my Immortal Ops Series World. It is set in the here and now and focuses on men and women who were genetically engineered to be super soldiers. It borrows heavily from real-life historical events with sci-fi elements woven in, creating a plausible backdrop for the romance between the hero and heroine. At the series core, the books are romance reads, but the science fiction elements add extra layers of depth, intrigue, and suspense.
I’m not going to lie. My life would be a ton easier if I’d have set the Immortal Ops in the future on another planet (spoiler alert: my temp titled Space Ops Series will be releasing soon–it’s unrelated to the Immortal Ops, but as the name suggests, takes place in space) because it would have meant I had the freedom to invent the planet and the rules. As it stands, I needed to find a way to blend science facts with fiction, all in a way that fits within the known world we live in.
Since the Immortal Ops books have been released since the early 2000s, I’m going to pat myself on the back and say, “nailed it.” There are numerous entry points to the series since it’s pushing thirty books (and counting) in the overall series world. Spotlight: Let it All Burn

Next up in my Fab13 spotlight is the amazingly talented Denise Grover Swank. Let it all Burn is such a fabulous read. I keep hoping she’ll make it into a series!
About the Book:Darcie Weatherby has a full plate—a preteen and sixteen-year-old twins, a wayward grandmother, a nightmare boss, and a manipulative ex-husband. The last thing she needs are hot flashes.
Especially ones that start fires.
But like most single mothers, Darcie sucks it up and deals with it, because what else can she do? The kids need to be fed, her grandmother needs supervising, and her demanding boss needs placating.
Burning her boss’s house down was a total accident.
Honest.
It doesn’t take long before Darcie realizes she’s running on borrowed time. Unless she figures out a way to get these hot flashes under control, there’s a very good chance she’ll spontaneously combust at the Founder’s Day Masquerade Ball and leave her children motherless. There’s no way in hell—or Perry’s Fall, Ohio—Darcie will let that happen.
Never underestimate the determination of a mother.
Especially a smokin’ hot one.
Looking for more books in this HOT FLASH of a new genre?

“Let it All Burn” is a page-turner that will have you rooting for Darcie and her never-say-die attitude. Don’t miss out on Denise Grover Swank’s unforgettable read. Fans of Paranormal Women’s Fiction will love it!
