Dalla recensione: (...) La trama ad altissima tensione si sviluppa a ritmo serrato ed è fitta di azione e colpi di scena. Nello stesso tempo però accoglie al suo interno dei momenti di pausa scaditi da immagini o flashback che ci consentono di conoscere meglio i personaggi e il loro vissuto.Affermandosi come romanzo al femminile, a partire dalla stessa dedica a Janis Joplin in apertura, Kiki. The beginning, in effetti, ha più di una protagonista. Accanto alla Léger – che in questa occasione conosceremo più da vicino scoprendola anche capace di innamorarsi a dispetto della durezza ostentata sempre – scopriremo altre cinque combattenti, Vespe Assassine come verranno battezzate, reclutate insieme a lei allo stesso scopo. Dangerous Yuki Liu, Makena Black Mamba, Madeleine Royale, Paradis Trecce Bionde, Roslyn l’Irlandese (la iena). Questi i loro nomi ma dietro ciascuna si cela un vissuto fatto di atrocità e violenze che l’autore non manca di raccontarci. Sono parentesi di dolore e rabbia che ci permettono di comprendere e affezionarci a queste donne, facendoci vedere l’anima che si nasconde sotto la corazza di spietate assassine, ma sono anche strappi nel tessuto narrativo attraverso cui la fiction sembra scivolare via e la realtà filtra con prepotenza. Infibulazione, incesto, stupri, fame: di questo parlano i trascorsi delle Vespe assassine, orrori che tantissime donne nel mondo reale conoscono. Tutte e sei sono killer per reazione, la loro trasformazione – che spesso è contrassegnata anche da un particolare cambiamento nel fisico – è una risposta a ciò che hanno subito. In qualche modo queste sei guerriere rappresentano le donne che scelgono di non soccombere e di reagire (chiaramente nel mondo di Naraka lo fanno nel modo più estremo che si possa immaginare), non solo non si sono lasciate schiacciare dai loro aguzzini ma hanno saputo trasformare in forza le loro debolezze. (...) In sintonia con la cifra stilistica che lo contraddistingue, Battiago dipinge l’inferno con le parole, affiancando un registro crudo e diretto che sorregge l’azione a quello lirico con cui riesce a descrivere violenze inenarrabili con poesia, creando un contrasto tra forma e contenuto che graffia l’anima. Ancora una volta ci offre uno spaccato di un mondo immaginario che stranisce, disturba a volte fa anche sorridere per i suoi tratti grotteschi, e nello stesso tempo fa riflettere perché a ben guardare la lente deformante di Naraka, pur nutrendosi di eccessi, riflette un lato oscuro ma reale della nostra società e della stessa natura umana. Prendendo a prestito le parole di Nietzsche, avventurarsi per le strade di Parigi Sud 5 è un po’ come guardare nell’abisso fino a rendersi conto che quell’abisso sta guardando dentro noi, rispecchiando quello che siamo e quello che potremmo ancora diventare.
