Dealing with grief

For those of us who are getting on in years or dealing with elderly friends and relatives I have just discovered a wonderful site by former SMH journalist Margaret Rice, where she both shares her own experiences and the stories of others. See link to site - https://goodgrief60.wordpress.com/aut...

She is also writing this story into a full length book and I have been privileged to read a pre-publication version. It is a wonderful and deeply moving story which I encourage you all to read and I will let you know when it is available.

Little Lost Girl Launch

In just over a day I will launch the print version of my new book - Little Lost Girl, I am delighted that so many of you have entered the giveaways for this which conclude this Friday and I will then start posting them all out to lucky winners. I would love if anyone who gets one writes a review on Goodreads. Please be honest rather than nice and if you do not enjoy it please tell me.
For the launch I will have the original photo of Jessie Grace Holmes, the 8 year old girl who died in our house about 100 years ago and whose photo was hidden for a century in the chimney. It was the finding of her photo that inspired the telling of this story, and while I have imagined another little girl, Sophie, one day I would like to rediscover the story of who was little Jessie.

Anyway I will do an update after the Book Launch is over and then turn my attention to telling more about some of the other great Australian stories I have read recently

More to follow soon

Northern Territory Stories

For any of my blog readers I would love to hear from any of you who have been to the NT or are interested in its stories - particularly if you have stories of you own - even just tiny anecdotes

Speaking of the NT last year I read a great book set there, on Killarney Station - 'A Sunburnt Childhood' by Toni Tapp Coutts. This tells a wonderful and authentic story of a child growing up on a remote NT cattle station, and of the people, both black and white who lived there. If you have not read it I encourage you to do so and if you had this author has a new book "My Outback Life' coming out around March, which I will be buying

Happy reading

A year on

A year has gone by and I realise I have posted nothing further on this site. I have also not written anything really new except the first few chapters of my new novel, Risk Free, which is a story about corporate greed. I started it as a November NaNoWriMo novel, plan to launch a big effort in Feb to progress. However I have done a heap of work editing previous novels - with new covers and hence a new version of my previous 'The Old Balmain House' novel with new covers that I love designed by Nada Backovic. Previous version was an ebook bestseller on Amazon in Australian historical fiction for much of 2016, (thank to Amazon for support). I am now planning a book launch for this renamed book in local Sydney bookshops in February 2017, with others in series to follow later in year.

Enough about my writing. I continue to enjoy reading and particularly have developed a taste for English Fiction - having loved books by Katherine Webb - particularly 'Half Forgotten Song'. Two other good reads over Christmas were 'The Dry' by Jane Harper -loved the descriptions of austere Oz landscape, and 'I See You' by Claire Mackintosh, a gripping story about how information on social media can be used by predators. This year I will turn my attention more to North American Fiction - keen to hear from others about what they think is best new dramatic writing.

Why this blog

I am an author of nine books, a memoir and two series of novels. However I have also been a keen reader all my remembered life, ever since discovering and reading my first Famous Five novel, tucked in an obscure corner of a holiday house in a place called Kangaroo Valley on the south coast of NSW. Other wonderful reading memories are being one of five children gathered around my mother on a Sunday afternoon when she read King Solomon's Mines and about Mowgli in the Jungle Book. That was a long time ago but the magic of being lost in a story has never left me.

So the purpose of these posts which I will try to do each week is to tell of some memorable occasions where what I have read has fired my imagination.

I will not talk about my own books - they are listed on my author page for anyone who wants to read them.

I encourage you too to share your magic book and reading memories.
