The Modern Woman’s Lifestyle Grocery List
“Being a woman no longer means being silent and subservient. A modern woman is strong, but in a subtle, confident way that doesn’t need to be abrasive. A woman’s looks can be helpful, but her brains will always propel her to where she wants to go. A modern woman is well-educated; she is up on what is going on in the world around her so that no one can pull the wool over her eyes.” -Choosing The Simply Luxurious Life: A Modern Woman’s Guide
The Simple Sophisticate, episode #28
Throughout the duration of TSLL blog, many lists have been shared: back-to-school/work, weekly grocery, travel tote packing, 10 wardrobe essentials and maintaining a simply luxurious life – just to name a few. But after perusing through some of my favorite magazines over the weekend and tending to my to-do list to stock up on certain lifestyle basics that had run out, I realized there was one list that has not yet been shared – the lifestyle grocery list.
What is the lifestyle grocery list?
Any item that requires money in your budget, but doesn’t occur regularly (i.e. weekly or monthly), minus food or clothes. This list includes a variety of arenas of our lives as keeping these items stocked allows for our lives to run more smoothly, our confidence to soar, a healthy balance between work and leisure to be struck, networking and relationships to remain strong and our knowledge of the world to regularly stimulated and informed.
1. Stationery
From thank you cards to basic blank stationery and even the annual holiday cards, make a point of trying to stock up before you run out, as you never know when you’ll need them, but you’ll always be glad you do have them at the ready. (TSLL Rec ~ Inslee Stationery)
2. 2-3 Intriguing Books
Whether you have a book on your nightstand next to your bed, in your purse or prepped and ready next to your favorite reading chair in the living room, have two or three books of different genres so that no matter what your mood, you will always have something to dive into. Here are three categories I have found to cover all of my bases of potential moods and interests: leisure (cozy mystery, beach reading, etc), literature (classics, award-winners, etc) and non-fiction (how-to, biographies, history, lifestyle, inspiration, etc)
3. Favorite tea, coffee or drink of choice
Knowing you have your favorite coffee in the morning ready to help kick off the day or your favorite sipping tea in the evening to unwind is a wonderful comfort to bookend the day. Be kind to yourself when choosing your varietals, and remember that such a simple luxury can make a very big difference. (TSLL recommends ~ Palais des Thes Montagne Bleue, BeeCrowBee black lavender, Mariage Frere Vert Provence)
4. Trusted Make-Up Basics
Thankfully make-up doesn’t need to be purchased each month, as it can become expensive, but it is a necessary purchase to include in our budget. Whether you are an extensive routine, or something simple, be sure to have these five basics stocked: concealor, blush, lipstick, primer, and mascara. After all, when we look are best, our confidence receives an extra boost and we are better able to forget how we look and focus fully on what we are doing.
5. Necessary Hair Products
Now this list, similar to the make-up list, will vary based on you, but for a general list, most of us need products to help us prep, style, hold, and repair. And to maintain a blow-out as not everyone washes their hair everyday, having a dry shampoo is always a good idea.
6. Candles
Lately, I have fallen in love with having scented candles around the home. Especially during the chillier months, candles offer the similar touch as fresh flowers as they cozy up the space and soften the mood. (TSLL Recommends ~, Diptyque – Santal & Lavender)
7. Bubble Bath
Dipping into a warm bubble bath at the end of a long day or during a leisurely weekend is a simple pleasures that must be enjoyed from time to time. While yes, a bath without bubbles works just as well, there is just something lovely about the texture, opaque appearance and often scent depending upon which varietal you purchase. These are my two favorites: verbena & lavender.
8. Journal
Ah, the outlet for self-therapy, expressing gratitude, keeping a personal history, cataloging ideas, and anything else that prompts you to write, having a journal on-hand at all times is something I highly recommend. Often purchased twice a year, sometimes once, a journal is a trusted companion that doesn’t cost all that much to maintain.
9. Truffles
As I’ve mentioned several times on the blog, in the book and on the podcast, one of my favorite rituals if I haven’t indulged in dessert is one dark chocolate truffle paired with a cup of black lavender tea. A simple luxury that always satiates my taste buds and signals to my mind that its time to unwind, Arrowhead Chocolates are always ready to be enjoyed.
10. Razors
A razor that is primed and ready to work its magic is a simple item we may take for granted. Making sure we are not using a dull razor as well will help avoid razor burn and unnecessary stubble.
11. Toothbrush
Sometimes this item is something I forget about and keep brushing away with a bristles that really aren’t doing much. Every six months, help your teeth and your gums out and pick up a new toothbrush.
12. Skincare
Certainly items that are worth the investment, caring for our skin will allow our best selves to shine and prevent unnecessary pre-mature aging. From cleanser to moisturizer, eye cream, scrub, masques, and body lotion, have a look here for tips on how to create glowing skin.
13. Planner Refills
As someone who still using a hold-in-your-hands planner, this requires an annual refill. While I have tried to go completely digital, the writer in me needed to physically be able to write, erase, pen-in the events of my everyday life. Scratch this from your list if you are paperless. (Franklin Planners)
14. Make-up Application Tools
Each woman’s make-up routine will be different, and aside from the brushes we use and clean, we will need to keep stocked the disposable items such as: cotton balls, Q-tips, sponges, etc.
15. 2-5 subscriptions for regular reading material
Part of being a savvy citizen, individual and wise decision-maker is knowing what is going on in the world. Also, having when we stay abreast of news in our fields of interest, we have ample conversation topics and deepen our own knowledge base as well. Here are just a few ideas of subscriptions you may want to include in your reading repertoire: local newspaper, world/national newspaper, periodicals, hobbies, etc. Below is a potential list of specific publications that I have in the past or currently enjoy that you may be interested in:
The New Yorker
The Economist
The Week
The New York Times
The Wall Street Journal
Times Literary Supplement
The New York Review of Books
Vogue US
Real Simple
The English Home
Harper’s Bazaar
Elle UK
Elle US
Town & Country
Vanity Fair
Saveur
Bon Appetit
Time
Elle Decor
House Beautiful
Domino
Porter
16. Business Cards
Whether you run your own business, work for a company, teach, or simply are done working in the traditional work-force, having a card to quickly hand someone that contains your information is always a good idea. After all, you are your brand, so enjoy designing your card if you have that luxury. I prefer to use the online printing business Zazzle, as they offer great prices and endless options so you can design the precise card to match your vision. (Vistaprint)
17. Nail Polish
Even if you have the luxury of paying someone else to do your nails, having polish and top coat at home is a good idea for chips and touch-ups. As someone who does her own pedicures and manicures, having these two items fresh and full is a good idea for whenever I can squeeze in this pampering activity.
18. Stamps
While much of the correspondence we are involved in doesn’t required stamps, if we are sending cards and using our stationery, we will need to have stamps.
19. Prescriptions
If you have any type of prescription whether for health, eye-sight, etc, this is a must-have item to budget for whenever the cycle is about to run-out.
20. Perfume
Perfume can last six months to a year and still have its potency, but not having it always makes me feel naked. Since it is an item that doesn’t need to be purchased as often, investing in a quality fragrance is a wonderful idea.
21. Flowers
If I can, picking up flowers weekly is ideal, but either due to the season or my budget needs, this may not always happen. While a discretionary purchase, purchasing flowers and bringing them home can add a warm and welcoming touch.
22. Dry Cleaning
Necessary, but not always on a regular basis, keeping a little extra available for such moments when your favorite dress, blouse or skirts need to be cared for is a worthwhile investment in your style, presentation and confidence.
23. Calendars
Perhaps your planner refills involve a calendar element as well, but if part of your home decor is hanging a wall calendar, this is a yearly expense to budget for.
24. Fitness Passes
Depending upon your fitness regimen, you may already pay a monthly gym fee or not attend a gym or classes at all. As someone who attends yoga classes, I purchase a pass with a certain number of classes and it runs out once I’ve used each pass. This is not a monthly expense, but something I need to budget for when it is about to run out.
Primarily, the reason to be aware of our lifestyle grocery list is to recognize what our budget needs to be prepared for, rather than being surprised when we run out of items we depend on regularly. Not all of these items will be on your list, as I have compiled it from what I tend to need and use in my own life. Please do share items that you feel I should add, as I am always looking for feedback.
Most importantly, living well, living simply luxuriously is about living consciously and handling those items which are completely in our control. Being prepared, looking our best, and feeling our best are three things that we can influence in a variety of ways. Why not do all that we can?

A reader of the blog recently brought this book to my attention (thank you Lynette!), and I quickly looked it up and put it on my wish list. ~The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Always looking for a feel-good movie, I adored the prequel starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Nev Patel, and now the The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which premieres today (March 6th), looks just as lovely. With the addition of Richard Gere, the beloved cast returns: Penelope Wilton (Isobel from Downton Abbey, and nearly everyone else you remember and enjoyed. ~Diana Krall at the L’Olympia Hall
During my last trip to Paris in 2013, I had the opportunity to see Melody Gardot in the iconic L’Olympia Hall. With its intimate feel in the heart of Paris, I thoroughly enjoyed my night with the tunes I came to know and love and the audience and acoustic were even more magnificent. How did I learn of this theater? Diana Krall’s Live in Paris CD. Ever since I have picked up that album, I have vowed I would enjoy her in concert in that very venue, and it just so happens that with her latest album Wallflower, just released earlier this year, she will be on stage for two straight nights – October 14th & 15th. Now I have to figure out how to make it work into my schedule.

~Happier by Gretchen Rubin
Okay, now this is a podcast to tune in to. Best-selling author Gretchen Rubin finally has dipped her toes in to the world of audio with her new podcast Happier. Having debuted at the end of February, she has just two episodes so far, but they are fantastic. Sharing her simple, yet helpful tips on how to go about our everyday and invite even more happiness than we may have imagined, Rubin and her sister, who lives in Los Angeles, offer a wonderful, playful banter that is easy to listen to and well worth your time.

And for a bit dressier approach, this bonded cotton trench, while a bit of an investment, is ideal for dress-up casual events that blur the lines. With its A-line cut, it is feminine and classic.

While I know we lose an hour of sleep this weekend (don’t forget to spring ahead!), I don’t much mind as the weather is absolutely splendid. With a weekend scheduled to stay at home, have coffee with friends, dinner with family, get back to the present with a yoga class and time to continue putting the finishing touches on TSLL Spring Shopping Guide, I am absolutely thrilled for the two days of leisure to arrive. And perhaps one evening a bath as that image above is too hard to resist.

Thoughts from the Editor: I Am A Searcher
What is a searcher? Are you a searcher?
Perhaps you are if you are stopping by and reading TSLL regularly, because as I discovered, after reading the passage below by James Kavanaugh, I am indeed a searcher and TSLL blog is the medium that provides the vessel to share what I discover.
And the best, and most exhilarating discovery of all is that I can’t imagine being any other way. I truly cannot imagine living any other way. Have a read through the passage, and then let’s talk on the other side.
As I ponder Kavanaugh’s words, I begin to play with other daily habits, other daily behaviors that I adhere to that align with the idea of being a searcher, and I wanted to share five that came to mind:
~I read voraciously to learn more about paths not traveled or yet to be experienced.
~I resolutely believe where there is an obstacle, there is a solution, a path to be found that leads to the other side.
~I am enthralled in observation of others, am keen to subtle peculiarities and sensitive to their pain and happiness as much as my own.
~I adore the touch of water – be it a stream, running bath water or rain from the clouds.
~I am invigorated by intimate conversation, conceptual discussions and thoughtful contemplation.
Now, if you too identify with being a searcher, I encourage you to share one way in which you find yourself exercising daily habits that mingle with the life of a searcher. I am very eager to hear.
After all, at the core, a searcher is someone who is intoxicated by the wonders of life and truly is dancing each day, challenged, yet entertained by the rhythm that changes regularly, but has a subtle regular heartbeat if only we choose to listen. Feel free to comment below. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic.
On a completely different note, well . . . not entirely. Milan Fashion Week offered a few fabulous collections. Hey, we can all be searchers and still look chic while we do it, no?
Below are a few ensembles that caught my eye (view all of my MFW favorites here). And stay tuned as Paris Fashion Week has just begun. All of the outfits that catch my eye will be posted here.
Emilio Pucci

Max Mara

13 Ways to Cultivate True Wealth
“View money and things not as something you create to fill a lack, but as tools to help you more fully express yourself and realize your potential.” —Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #27
The Nobel Prize winning author and philosopher for the field of literature once said about the topic of money and happiness, “It’s a kind of spiritual snobbery that makes people think they can be happy without money.” And while his acerbic tone is a bit chilling, in our modern world, unless we choose to live an alternative lifestyle, a certain amount of money is necessary to thrive rather than just survive.
Now should money be our driving force in life, something to worship? No. What money should be in our lives is understood, regarding the role it plays in our lives. We then must become the masters of money, but to ignore its necessity in our lives is to get in our own way.
So today we’re going to take a closer look at the everyday decisions that may appear initially small along with the once or twice in a lifetime decisions that when navigated properly yield a stronger financial foundation.
“Wealth is the slave of a wise man. The master of a fool.” —Seneca
Keep in mind there is not a set amount of money that will make you wealthy. In fact, many of the ideas shared today will be non-monetary ideas. For example, one of the quickest ways to boost your gratitude is to do a quick inventory of all of the abundance in your life. As Eckhart Tolle reminds us, “Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”
So what exactly is true wealth?
True wealth is a combination of contentment, a sense of purpose, strong, healthy relationships and a bank account to enable you to tend to each effectively.
True wealth is a combination of contentment, a sense of purpose, strong, healthy relationships and…
Click To Tweet
So with that in mind, let’s take a look at the thirteen ways we each can cultivate true wealth in our everyday lives.
1. Spend Less
“If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free. If our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed.” —Edmund Burke
Financial advisors have three basic principles when it comes to advice about money: (1) spend less, (2) make more and (3) invest wisely. Each one of us will set a different number that is required to live within our means as well as our comfort zone. But the key is to know where your money is going and assess as honestly as possible, whether your money wisely spent or mindlessly wasted? Only you know the answer, and this will change as the years pass based on goals achieved, personal growth and knowledge of how you wish your life to proceed.
2. Reconsider the Ideal Neighborhood
Recently Forbes reported that in order to acquire more wealth, we must not aspire to live in the best or most expensive neighborhood. Why? Spending an exorbitant amount of money on a mortgage or rent simply to keep up in the present is going to drain our bank accounts of good money that could be invested and enjoyed in the future. If we forgo that enticing address, in time our saved money will yield more financial security and flexibility for decisions down road.
3. Forget New & Choose Used
When it comes to transportation, if your schedule requires you to drive a car, rather than purchase a new vehicle, invest in a used car and drive it for more than a couple of years. Preferably to the point where you no longer have payments and the car is still in decent condition for trade in when the time arises.
4. Practice Patience
When it comes to investing, the best advice is to invest early to allow for compound interest to work for you. Regardless, whenever you begin investing, have patience. Forget about your investment, schedule automatic deposits each month and let time do its work.
5. Set Aside Extra Money
If you are receiving a tax refund this year, if you receive a bonus at the end of the year, if you received an unexpected commission, set it aside in your savings, mutual fund or wherever you place money that is not readily at your disposal. If you do this each time an nice windfall comes your way, you will establish a very comforting nest egg for a long list of opportunities down the road.
6. Avoid Trend Investing
You may have invested in Facebook or Twitter when it finally began selling publicly simply because you hoped it would be the next Apple, Google or any one hit wonders that have skyrocketed since they debuted years ago, only to be disappointed. Don’t fall prey to the hype. While you will want to invest in higher risk stocks when you’re younger, look to mutual funds or consult your financial advisor unless you are someone who knows the market very well.
7. Don’t Overestimate Appearance
On TSLL style is discussed, shared and shopped regularly. And while there is great power in the proper appearance, knowing the difference between building a capsule wardrobe made up of 10-15 qualities items is much different than requiring top labels merely for the fact that you will be seen wearing such items. Tend to your appearance just enough to command respect and exude confidence, but don’t drain your bank account to make a strong first impression. Without question, your talents and intelligence will carry the weight of that requirement for you.
8. Learn How to Effectively Communicate
At first glance, communication may not be something you’d expect to see on a list dealing with wealth, but when it comes to relationships – professional and personal – it is how you are able to effectively communicate that will land you that job, convey sincerity and express your boundaries, love and aspirations clearly. Dale Carnegie’s well-known book How to Win Friends & Influence People, while written originally in the 1930s is a helpful guide to learning how to converse with just about anybody in any situation and achieve the desired outcome. While intentioned for the professional world, it offers key tips for any relationship you seek to strengthen.
9. Invest in Health
In the recent book I recommended last week Food Rules, the author reminds that it is better to pay the grocer now than the pharmacist or doctor later. And while initially paying for quality food items rather than quick, processed food may sound like a waste of money, it is actually a worthwhile investment in your health, your happiness and your bottom line.
10. Learn the Rules/Laws, Then Break Them As Necessary
In order to attain wealth, you must have the knowledge of how the world works. Whether we are talking about the world in general or the world in which you work – rules, expectations, means for gaining that promotion, means for getting fired, you get the idea.
And with any law or rule, they are made by man, so they are ripe with imperfections. But in order to change a rule that is ineffective, we must first understand what it is and why it came to be. This takes time and attention, but knowledge is power so that you aren’t left on the sidelines wondering what happened.
11. Forever Be a Student
“Anything that you learn becomes your wealth, a wealth that cannot be taken away from you; whether you learn it in a building called school or in the school of life. To learn something new is a timeless pleasure and a valuable treasure. And not all things that you learn are taught to you, but many things that you learn you realize you have taught yourself.” ― C. JoyBell
Choosing to forever be a learner of life, whether it is in a formal setting or as you travel the journey you are currently on is to become agile, nimble and wise to when it is best to progress or hold firm. To know history, to understand current events and how they will affect you, again I will repeat in #11 as I did in #10, knowledge is power. Not power to use to control others, but power to charter the path that will help you to unearth your true contentment.
“An investment in knowledge pays the best dividends.” —Benjamin Franklin
12. Discover What You Love
“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” —Herman Cain
If you are currently involved in a job you love, you may not initially be reaping the benefits; however, if you continue to be diligent in your efforts, spend time becoming an expert on your craft, you will create a niche, a talent, a gift that you can offer others like nobody else can. The key is to persevere and forever be a student, learning something new in your desired field. For if you are happy and hours pass away like seconds, and you have something that others need or desire, you will find a career and you will be successful.
13. Make Your Own Opportunity
“What is opportunity, and when does it knock? It never knocks. You can wait a whole lifetime, listening, hoping, and you will hear no knocking. None at all. You are opportunity, and you must knock on the door leading to your destiny.” —Maxwell Maltz
Unfortunately, opportunity doesn’t give us a calendar or schedule of when it is to arrive. Which in actuality may be a blessing in disguise. After all, how would it distinguish those who truly desire something from those who are fair-weathered? No opportunity is something we must prepare for out of a sort of blind faith. It is something what we must diligently work for in our desired field, toward a goal that we may not even know how to define, and then, as the quote above suggests, we must begin knocking until a door finally opens.
As you can see, some of the ways to acquire wealth deal directly with monetary decisions, while others are indirectly responding to how we interact with life, our health and our willingness to take risk and be true to our talents.
Upon attaining true wealth, you will recognize it because you will become less restless, you won’t be counting your money or incessantly checking your accounts, rather you will be able to sit back, breath deeply and remain confident that you have done the proper preparation, are offering something of value and have taken risks when necessary that are in alignment with your goals and values.
So you see, true wealth is a state of mind, one that while yes, does involve money to some degree, also requires of the journeywoman to be in tune with themselves and conscious of how they live each and every day.

~Beauty
~Molton Brown, London
At my recent stay at Portland’s White House Bed & Breakfast, I discovered a line of lotions and bath products that were quite the lovely little travel bottles of luxury. Molton Brown offers an entire line of bath and beauty products that while an investment, will not leave you wanting for silky smooth skin. Made exclusively in England, my preference are the wide array of body lotions, especially the White Sandalwood body lotion. Have a look at their entire website and see what catches your eye.
~Book
~Acquired Tastes by Peter Mayle
One of Peter Mayle’s first books, Acquired Tastes, is a compilation of essays from his travels while working with GQ. Full of his descriptions and detailed experiences of sampling the luxuries of life in France from Parisian bistros to antiques and on to truffles, the decadent life couldn’t be more sweeter with Mayle at the helm. As a fan of his cozy mysteries and tales, this is the one book I have yet to read and cannot wait to indulge in.
~Broadway
~The Audience
“Sixty years. Twelve Prime Ministers. One Queen.” Helen Mirren returns in her leading role that won her great acclaim in London in 2013, as she brings Queen Elizabeth to the Broadway stage in The Audience this spring season. Currently in previews, and only running through June, Mirren reprises her ability to channel the beloved monarch and offer a behind the scenes glimpse into the Queen of England’s weekly meetings with the Prime Minister. Beginning with Winston Churchill when the queen was merely in her early twenties through the current incumbent David Cameron, this is a play I hope I am able to see.
~Shopping
~Dee Keller’s Sky Blue Suede pumps
Blue suede shoes never looked so chic and modern. Ideal for spring, and full of height, why not have these on hand in your closet for wearing with a simple denim look or a twist on a classic work dress or skirt?
~Stationery
~R.Nichols 20% off Sale
If you are looking to stock up on stationery, and happen to be smitten with French Women Don’t Get Fat’s illustrations, you will want to be introduced to the talented R.Nichols. Yes, he is the man behind the svelte French silhouettes we’ve all come to adore. And with the promo code sunshine you can save 20% off site wide this weekend. Don’t miss this. This set of cards and this one are my favorites.
~Television
~House of Cards, Season 3
Heeeeeeee’s baaaaaaack. Kevin Spacey that is. I mean Francis Underwood, who is now the President of the United States. Yes, and the recently anointed First Lady played by Robin Wright. Season 3 is now available on Netflix, the entire season. I must admit, I didn’t catch on to this addicting political drama until last spring, but I will now confess, I am eager to watch the third season. On a fashion note, due to to Claire Underwood’s new position, Christian Dior and Oscar de la Renta are expected to make appearances in her wardrobe. Have a look at the trailer below.
February is wrapping up and that means someone is celebrating a birthday. While I most likely won’t be kicking up my heels in any grand fashion as the first image displays, I will without question be reveling in a few of my favorite luxuries – perhaps listening to my favorite records, savoring a sweet treat or two and in all seriousness just letting go and losing track of time letting the day take me where it will.
It’s funny how some years you feel like throwing up your arms in great revelry, while other years you simple want to savor and keep it simple and cozy. The latter is how I’m feeling this year, and I cannot wait for the day to begin.
Since my birthday does fall on the last day of the month, I’ve always been curious as to why February only has twenty-eight days (most years, that is). Well, I’ve found out, and I want to share. Have a look at the short film produced by PBS.

Thoughts from the Editor: A Weekly Menu & Oscar’s Red Carpet
One of the most enjoyable weekly routines I genuinely love is the Sunday market shopping to prepare for the week ahead. It so happened to be the case this past Sunday, I was able to drop into a Market of Choice in Portland late in the morning when crowds were minimal and peruse the just stocked shelves, bins and display cases of fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, meat and everything in between.
I must admit there is something oddly soothly and invigorating about stepping away from the center aisles and luxuriating in all of the freshness around the perimeters of the market that requires of the shoppers to savor, enjoy and take home to dance with the necessary ingredients so they can reveal their magnificence. After all, it is at its peak for only so long, so we must indulge, no?
I ended up picking up the daily special which was a 1/2 pound of Dover Sole as I have been oh so enthusiastic about making Julia Child’s classic sole meunière but rarely am able to find the sole fillets in my home town. Needless to say, I pounced, and Julia was right: it’s delicate flavor makes it the dream fish.
The beauty of having a weekly shopping routine is that I have a core list that I always need to tend to. At this point, it is basically engrained in my memory, so no list is required. However, I always have a list with those few items that are needed for a new recipe I am eager to try, items that need to be restocked less regularly and anything out of the ordinary.
So what does my core list consist of? Well, first let me backtrack a little bit. Prior to stopping into the market, I stopped into a local independent bookstore that I have been introduced to by friends, and as I had hoped it was as one reader commented on Instagram very much like Meg Ryan’s cozy bookstore in You’ve Got Mail. Annie Bloom’s Books is a must-visit if you are every in the SW part of Portland (Oregon). Located on a small street in Multnomah Village lined with similarly chic boutiques, dining destinations and cafes, you could spend a couple hours easily just exploring not realizing you were in the bustling metropolitan city of Portland.
While enjoying the company of the shelves of books, I discovered one I am wanting to share and encouraging you to read if you are wanting to establish a healthy relationship with food for life. After all, food is to be enjoyed, savored and serve as fuel as we go about chasing our dreams. Food Rules by Michael Pollan, the author of the best-selling book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, pairs with illustrator Maira Kalman to share 83 simple, straight-forward rules when it comes to what we eat and why. Paired with inviting illustration, this small manual is a resource that will remind you of the two basic facts the author wishes to teach the reader:
Populations that eat a so-called Western diet – generally defined as a diet consisting of lots of processed foods and meat, lots of added fat and sugar, lots of refined grains, lots of everything except vegetables, fruits and whole grains – invariably suffer from high rates of so-called Western diseases: obesity, type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Four of the top ten killers in America are chronic diseases linked to the Western diet.
Populations eating a remarkably wide range of traditional diets generally don’t suffer from these chronic diseases. These diets run the gamut from ones very high in fat (the Inuit in Greenland) to ones high in carbohydrate (Central American Indians) to ones very high in protein (Masai tribesmen in Africa).
In other words, Food Rules reminds and teaches readers how to eat in moderation and enjoy food even more. Yes, it is indeed possible, and through the simplistic approach, you will walk away wiser, happier and satiated. Here are a just a few of the rules you will find inside:
#9. Avoid Food Products with the Word “Lite” or the Terms “low-Fat” or “nonfat” in Their Names.
#37 Sweeten and Salt Your Food Yourself.
#48. Eat More Like the French. Or the Japanese. Or the Italians. Or the Greeks.
#52. Have a Glass of Wine with Dinner.
#82. Cook.
So with the book as my muse on Sunday, I danced in the aisles as I commenced my beloved weekly routine and picked up my core essentials to kick off the work week in delicious, healthy style:
raw vegetables (radishes, carrots, cucumbers, etc) for snacking
broccoli, green beans, brussel sprouts – for vegetable sides for lunch and dinner
protein – fish, chicken – to be the main entrée for lunch and/or dinner
fruit (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc) for my late morning snack
almonds (unsalted, roasted) – afternoon snacking
cheese (paired with an afternoon snack or for appetizers)
2 apples (sliced in half and enjoyed with cheese for an afternoon snack)
eggs – one egg in the morning
steel oats – breakfast fiber
baby spinach – simple salad greens for lunch or dinner dressed with homemade vinaigrette (recipe here – #5)
1 French baguette (usually picked up at my local bakery in Walla Walla)
And now to the Red Carpet of the 87th Annual Academy Awards . . . yes indeed, there were many exquisite, unique, custom gowns, but it was an acceptance speech by Graham Moore and the #AskHerMore campaign that caught and kept my attention. Here is the speech, and below are my favorite simply luxurious designs seen on the red carpet (I’ve saved the best for last).

Style Inspiration: Chic & Statement Neutrals
Neutrals – the safe bet for certain chic style. And what you see above and in a handful of images below, you can mix and match with abandon, and all is well. No need for matchy, matchy ensembles, so long as everything is a neutral. Perhaps against the traditional rules, but then again, it’s about understanding the power of simple choices and making them work for you. Choose different textures, pair with signature accessories, and the neutral is elevated beyond the basic.

How to Style a Bar Cart

“The ornaments of your home are the people who smile upon entering time and time again.”
― Maralee McKee
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #26
After watching the six seasons and two movies of Sex and the City, the one decor essential that seemed would be a perfect fit for the en vogue iconic New Yorker, Carrie Bradshaw, was the bar cart. However, since she was always out on the town, she really had no need. However, when Vogue interviewed Sarah Jessica Parker in their on-going series 73 questions, a glimpse of said bar cart was revealed. So maybe Carrie Bradshaw is not in need of one (although, I’m sure Mr. Big would be in favor), but SJP certainly is on the same page as today’s post.
The idea of a bar cart has always been in the back of mind. The simplicity of creating a space wherever you’d prefer to serve guests and offer something lovely to eat or drink has not only been enticing to me, but something that allows you to be prepared at a moments notice for guests, entertaining regardless of what the event might be.
While the scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s springs to mind when I think of entertaining in small, yet chic quarters, the exciting news is we call create this environment. And today I look forward to showing you how and offer reasons to consider adding this to your simply luxurious sanctuary.
The benefits of having a bar cart on wheels are many. As you will discover, the options are endless depending upon your taste and needs. From metal to bamboo, mirrored trays to wood, rectangular to oval – gold or silver, type “bar cart” into your search engine, and the shopping options will astound you. Below I will offer a handful of carts to get you started as well as share the one I finally knew the moment I saw it was going to be mine.
Benefits:
1. Versatile
Perhaps you live in a small studio or maybe you live in a spacious historic estate, the good news is any house, apartment or living space can accommodate a bar cart.
2. Keep the conversation flowing
If your floor plan isn’t open and the kitchen is separate from the lounge or living area in which your guests congregate for conversation, each time the host wishing to refill or restock a platter or glass of wine for the guests, they must leave the room. With a bart cart, this frustration is eliminated, and guests can even help themselves which allows everyone the ability to relax.
3. Move the conversation
If you are having a dinner party, beginning the evening in the living room or another room away from the dining table allows for a more relaxing conversational setting. At the same time, after dinner, move your guests back into the sitting room for the same reasons. Each time you, kick start a new conversation, allow people to become more comfortable and mix up who is seated or standing to whom potentially instigating new connections.
4. Relax in comfort
As I briefly mentioned above, moving guests away from the dining table and into more comfortable seating where they can relax can invite the evening to take its natural course. If the energy is rolling, time will be forgotten and a very memorable time is more likely to be enjoyed.
5. Mobility
Having the ability to move your cart to your guests and where it will best suit whichever situation you are organizing in your home is an wonderful perk. During the holidays, I hosted a gathering at my home and so stationed the bar car near the tree, but also made space for the bartender to stand behind it comfortable able to survey the room should anyone need a refill or a drink.
How:
1. Decide What It Will Be Used For
Simply because Mad Men stocks their bars with hard alcohol doesn’t mean that is all a bar cart is good for. Depending upon your lifestyle and preference, a bar cart can be ideal for just about anything. From morning pastries and mimosa and tea in the morning, to high tea and nibbles in the afternoon, to a wine and artisan beer bar in the evening. Whichever you prefer, stock and shop accordingly.
2. Glassware
Based upon how you will be using the bar, select glasses that are beautiful as well as functional. You can certainly choose matching sets or enjoy stopping into decor consignment shops for unique wine glasses in a variety of colors and sizes. If you are serving tea, there are stunning tea cups and saucers for bare minimal prices at yard sales and second hand stores.
3. Tools & Supplies
If you are stocking a classic bar cart capable of making mixed drinks, you will need certain supplies, but if you are preferring a more morning bar cart set-up, the supplies will be a little different – perhaps a pastry pedestal stand? Below are three lists for your preferred function for your bar cart:
Mixed Drinks
ice bucket
martini shaker
strainer
jigger
toothpick
ice tongs
stirrer
colorful straws or sterling silver straws
cocktail napkins
Wine & Beer
wine bottle opener
bottle opener
decanter
ice bucket for white/rose wine
cocktail napkins
Tea and/or Breakfast
teapot
tea cups and saucers
tea strainer
pastry display
napkins
4. Beverages
Understandably, you will want to stock your bar with the drinks you prefer, but for appearances sake, do keep in mind design and organization. Organized by color, type or style, the effect of chic often is awareness of presentation. Feel free to decant or place hard liquor in beautiful decanters as they could be filled with your signature drink of choice.
5. Matches
While most people don’t smoke anymore and if they do, rarely indoors, I prefer to have matches for lighting candles in the room. I am not perpetually on a scavenger hunt to find matchbooks to add to my collection as they add conversation, but also a simple signature style to the cart. Also, if you have a fireplace, these are easily accessible for starting a cozy evening indoors.
6. Mother Nature
With all of the metal and glass adorning your bar cart, adding a touch of Mother Nature with a simple bouquet of flowers softens the look and provides just the right balance.
7. Conversation Pieces
Whether its a unique bowl full of corks as I have on my bar cart, a unexpected souvenir from your travels or a beautiful painting set just above or on top of your bar cart, add a conversational piece that will reveal something about yourself, but not too much so as to prompt a question to kickstart a conversation.
8. Candles
Always an option if there is space, I found my candelabra for five dollars at a pop-up estate sale while walking down NW 23rd in Portland. I wasn’t sure how it was going to work, but it sure has been the right addition to add a touch of height in the corner of my living room. With the addition of the soft light, it creates a more intimate mood and can be light depending upon the time of day or the people you are with.
As someone who loves conversation and the beauty of not knowing exactly where any conversation may lead with the proper food and drink to allow for your guests and yourself to relax, the bar cart is an essential detail to consider welcoming into your home.
In the short time that I have had my bar cart, I have already enjoyed spending time and entertaining in my home far more than I ever expected. After all, our homes need be the destination in which we can relax, unwind and invite those we love and wish to know better do the same when we invite them into our home or share our home with them.
