He Is THE Dave Stewart

I am not really enamored by celebrities, but when I found out that one of our friends at church is the Dave Stewart, I must admit that I was flabbergasted.

For those not in the coffee industry, Dave Stewart and his brother, Jim, were the founders of Seattle’s Best Coffee (SBC). Having been an owner and operator of an espresso cart in the late eighties when SBC was king of espresso in Seattle, I was delighted to talk shop with Dave when we first met. (Our wives, who have been in Bible studies t...

Mistakes and Poems

We all make mistakes. Fortunately, with writing, we can just edit to fix them.

Last week, I posted a piece about our school’s Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly. The date on my blog says it ran Saturday, January 24, 2015, but I put links to it on Facebook and Twitter on MLK day. I figured it made sense to put it out there on the day, but I also knew there was a potential for mistakes.

Naturally, there were.

My first mistake was in assuming the poems read could be found on the internet so I searche...

Be Proud

“Martin Luther King Jr NYWTS”

The students of Cedarcrest High School should be proud of themselves on this Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day. Indeed, their parents and certainly their teachers have every reason to be proud of their behavior at the MLK assembly.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. assem...

Shameless Self-Promotion

It was not me. As much as I would like to take credit for the shameless self-promotion in our staff room before the Christmas break, it really was not my doing. My words came back to haunt me.

Two of my friends, M & M (the ones who claim to be my only two real readers), decided to make my words come back to haunt me. I knew they were going to do it. After all, one of them told me it was going to happen. I just did not know when. Or how.

I thought something was up the last week of school before...

3 Before 2?

I am not a betting man, but if I was, I would bet on the Seattle Seahawks winning a third Super Bowl in a row.

I know people will say that I made a typo or that I am jinxing the Seahawks who have not even won their second championship. Yet. But I am just thinking of the odds a person might get on a simple bet like that.

From what I understand about sports books, they take bets (where it is legal, of course) on just about any sporting event. Even those that may never happen. So right after the S...

Somebody Is Watching Me [1]

Whenever I think of Big Brother, I hear Rockwell (with Michael Jackson) singing Somebody’s Watching Me.

Big Brother, for those who do not remember or have not yet read 1984, is a reference to the government watching. Watching. Watching. Everything we do. Conspiracy theorists and many others think that there is always somebody watching. Just waiting for us to do something naughty. Santa’s spies with an agenda or some such notion. Maybe it is just paranoia. Or maybe it is not.

In today’s day and...

Time for Christmas [1]

Free Religious Christmas Clipart

I cannot believe it is almost Christmas. (Or that it is already Christmas or that Christmas has already come and gone, depending on when you read this.)

They say that time flies when you are having fun. Well, I must be having lots of fun this school year, because I cannot believe that we are almost halfway through. It is already Christmas and it seems that the school year just started. I am having fun, but I am not sure I am having so much that the days fly by s...

Fantasy Football Championship

On Any Given Sunday by John Morgan

licensed under CC BY 2.0

I can hardly believe I am in our fantasy football league’s championship game. I know. It is mostly luck. But I am still excited that I made it. Especially, since I had such an inauspicious start (2-5) and was seeded next to last in the playoffs (seventh) with the second lowest points scored among those who made the playoffs. And since I dodged a bullet by a week (my semi-final opponent scored over 170 points in the quarterfinal game),...
