Am I Scamming Myself?

After a weekend of indulgent winey wonderfulness, the week and weekend afterward were all about getting back into the grind and groove of ordinary life. On Tuesday, a friend emailed me an article about all the scams out there promising to teach you to become the newest, successfullest writer out there.

Even if you don’t know how to write! It was a fascinating read, because in my line of work after work I run into these sorts of things all the time. And they’re appealing. Of cours...

A Coward's Perspective (Flash)

I gripped the back of the pew, knuckles turning white under tension. Tendons rounded across bone, flexing back and forth under my command. Her question hung heavier in the air than the century’s worth of voices and footsteps echoing in the empty heart of God.

I cast my eyes up, my head shrunk so ears touched the fuzzy shoulders of my overcoat. A flash of light turned blue and red and green a hundred feet above us. I unrolled my shoulders, letting go of the pew. Blood pulsed hard once the dam...

L&P #21 Thumbtacks

Each compass
points every which way,
never the same.

We follow the beck
and call,
aware or not
we are
hooked.

That is the haunting
beauty
of the constellation strewn
across a bulletin board,
thumbtacks marking
stars of hearts,
wants, and wishes.

L&P #20

Nothing about me is
ready.
The stammer of my heart,
my shaking breath,
even the tremor of my hands.
I am not.
But I look around:
I don’t see
what I need to see.
My world is filled
with half truths
and poorly designed delusions.
I am done:
with lying to myself,
to everyone around me.
Here we go.
I am
ready.

Pan is Unreliable (544 Words - Flash)

“You made me a what?”

She looked at me like one would an illogical political opponent. “You don’t understand?”

I took a deep breath and tried to stop my hands from shaking by wiping sweaty palms on the front of my shirt. It didn’t work. Still, you gotta do something. I did, anyway. I don’t like not knowing.

“No, I don’t understand.” I did my best to keep the biting terror hidden underneath as few words as possible. Surely that would keep my sphincter-clenching fear under wraps.

I cringed at t...

Strasbourg & All the Wine

There’s a moment in any wine lover’s life when every past experience fades away to nothing. It could be the best wine you’ve ever or and an eye-popping visit to a vineyard. Mine was visiting Strasbourg’s independent wine expo, theSalon des Vins Des Vignerons Indépendants. It became my happy place full of bubbles. Belle’s college…
