Dreamspinner Press Gift Card Giveaway Day 7 Cover Reveal Countdown!

Welcome to day seven of my Cover Reveal Countdown and Giveaway! Only six more days and I'll be revealing the cover and announcing the winners in the Dreamspinner Press Giveaway!

I had originally planned to showcase another character this morning, but yesterday got away from me, and everyone got shuffled around. Which left me scrabbling to deciding what to share. The decisions have been getting harder as I go!

In the end, I decided that a single quote defined this characters for me. When I started writing, I knew instantly they type of people both my main characters would be drawn to—the perks of being the writer—and this lady was perfect for Felix.

Remember, don't forget to comment below to be entered into the drawing for one of three Dreamspinner Press gift cards. And just in time for Christmas!

Dreamspinner Press Gift Card Giveaway Day 8 Cover Reveal Countdown!

Welcome to day eight of my Cover Reveal Countdown and Giveaway!

When I first decided to have a countdown to my cover reveal, I didn't give much thought to spoilers. Short-sighted, I know!  Especially since I'm one of those people who never reads a complete blurb for fear of learning too much, and cringe when someone mentions that they peek at the ending before reading a book. What?! Why?

I like surprises. I like stories to unfold in their own time. This is not everyone's philosophy. It's not even the same philosophy as many of the beta readers I've worked with. But I stick to my guns. Mostly.

I have a lot of respect for those who read and help shape a book before the rest of the world sees it. I know their value, even as I'm not sure I’m a particularly good beta reader myself. Still, I have the privilege of playing that role and, for a long time now—almost from the beginning—have been lucky enough to have some incredibly talented writers have my back. If you haven't read the team of Claire Davis and Al Stewart or Ofelia Gränd, what the hell, man?! You need to get on that! And perfect timing, they both have Christmas books out this month!

Today I thought I would share a character whose place in the world of That Rat, Carter Janson, while the same man from the stories conception, was still easily the most defined by the readers that came before the world ever knew it was a thing.

Remember, don't forget to comment below to be entered into the drawing for one of three Dreamspinner Press gift cards. And just in time for Christmas!

Dreamspinner Press Gift Card Giveaway Day 9 Cover Reveal Countdown!

Welcome to day nine of my Cover Reveal Countdown and Giveaway!

In That Rat, Carter Janson, the men outnumber the females at about two to one—I blame being a mother of only boys—but among the characters I've written over the last, almost four years, these women rank up there among my favorites.

For today I thought it would be fun to spotlight one of the ladies!

Remember, don't forget to comment below to be entered into the drawing for one of three Dreamspinner Press gift cards. And just in time for Christmas!

Imagining Your Spouse as a Psychopath, Star Wars, and Other Geeky Things

Trick-or-Treat

Happy Halloween! Or, more accurately, happy early Halloween.

October is my favorite month, and not just for the candy. The weather is amazing and, since most of the family trips I had as a child took place in this month, even the faintest hint of fall in the air has me wanting to hop in the car and drive away.

October even plays a part in my writing. Besides the fact that most—if not all—of my books take place in fall, other than ones I wrote for the Goodreads MM Group's old anthology, they've also been released in October.

This year has been a madhouse! While a term that has, quite sensibly, fallen out of fashion, it still feels quite fitting. The first five months were spent writing a story that will not be released until January, and the last five has been a scramble between different projects. Still, I wanted to release something for October because...it's my thing.

My first attempt wasn't great. While I still liked the premise of the story—a haunted trail, a mad crush, and a night straight out of a horror movie—it didn't feel like me. As much as I sometimes wish I wasn't the kind of writer I am, I'm that writer anyway. If you've read Cold Fingers or Body of Work, or even the Grant Cooper short stories, you know I'm a complete and utter dork. Crap from my childhood is always popping up. Needless to say, I watched way too many reruns and 80's cartoons as a kid. To this day, my favorite thing of everything I've written is the Cold Fingers teahouse scene with Christopher—our narrator—and Lee—the old-school horror actor—with the discussion about Star Wars and Peter Cushing.

It was then it dawned on me. The story didn't need to be about a night straight out of a horror movie, it needed to be about a night straight out of a BAD horror movie! And that gave me an idea. What if my husband was actually a psychopath? He's not, of course. Well, not completely, but he does have some scary strong opinions on a lot of stuff that I don't care about. I mean, strong-ass opinions!

With that, Pink Slip - a Halloween romance was born! Think funny, and dorky, and maybe a little scary. You know, like my husband. ❤️

Pink Slip is the first release in the Tattooed Corpse stories series I have been brainstorming with a few other authors. The series tagline says it all...Different time. Different place. Same body.  You can expect the second story, Worth His Salt by Ofelia Gränd to release in the next couple of weeks.

For now, if you like your horror fun and your love story maybe, kind of sweet, Pink Slip - a Halloween romance is available on Amazon and Smashwords, and will soon be available from most other online retailers.

Pink Slip - a Halloween romance

Blurb

Jackson Winter loves everything Halloween. He loves the weather, he loves horror movies and he loves his job at Hoffman Farm and Dairy’s yearly Trail of Terror. Now he thinks he just might be falling in love with the trail’s newest special effects artist, Tae Min Reese.

Tae is a disappointment all around. He’s not a doctor like his brother, he’s an art school dropout, and he has no interest in making his mother any grandbabies. Now it even looks like he’s going to lose his job at a second-rate haunted farm. And he’s not even sure why.

When Tae decides he needs to break the bad news to the good-looking zombie actor who makes up any excuse to see him, a chance encounter gives them both something else to worry about.

Now, two angry drunks, a stinky car, and a dead body could ruin Halloween for Jackson forever. Or could it mean a happy ending for them both?

EAT ALL THE CANDY!

October, Rats and Dead Bodies

First things first! Welcome to all the new list subscribers that have found me since April! Scary how fast time flies. Almost as scary as how rarely I manage to blog!

Today is the first day of October! Which, if you know me already, you know is my favorite time of the year. Thirty-one straight days of horror movies, scary books, and trying not to eat candy is just about enough to carry me through midsummer next year. At which point I will start building a case to my significant other of all the positives of putting out the Halloween decorations early. Apparently, my talking points aren't all that convincing as I've yet to win the argument.

As for writing news, there actually is some! :D

It seems I have about a two book a year writing limit, normally a novella and a short story. Much more than that and my children might forget my name and my husband might have to clean more! Wait! What? Clean more? We can't have that!

While last year at this time, as Body of Work (Cold Fingers 2) was coming out, I had every plan to have a Cold Fingers Book 3 to release this month—I think it's well past time for everyone to meet Vic's father—I got distracted with another project.

You can expect to see That Rat, Carter Janson out from Dreamspinner Press this coming January. We're not quite through editing, but it already has a fabulous cover by the talented Brooke Albrecht and a blurb that makes me want to squeal! Think museums, questionable ethics and that asshole ex you can't forget, no matter how much you wish you could.

Once we're closer to release I'll give you more details!

Still, I didn't want 2017 to go without a little something!

Currently, I'm working with a few other authors on a short stories series, the first stories of which will be out this month!

Tattooed Corpse Stories is a series of completely different tales by different authors. Different times, different places, different subgenres. The connecting factors? The same dead body, the same tattoo, and most certainly a fair amount of crazy!

There's probably a bit of romance in there too. LOL

From wizards to haunted trails, the first books of the series will be all over the board. Hopefully you'll find something that will perfectly fit your Halloween reading bill!

My story, Pink Slip, about love, and trying not to lose your gig at a Halloween Terror Trail—you know, zombies, scary clowns, corn mazes—has been a hell of a lot of fun to write!

I'll let you know more later this month! :D

Whenever I blog, I love to talk about the last book I read that stole my heart! So there is no way I could hit post without declaring my love for the newest release from two of my favorite authors, Claire Davis and Al Stewart.

Dear Mona Lisa... released in August to rave reviews, and is absolutely one of the most beautiful, romantic books I've read in ages. I can't gush enough about this one. It's about the masks we wear, about falling in love and about the struggle to overcome the past. ♥♥♥♥♥

If you haven't already discovered this little gem for yourself, you can grab it from Amazon HERE. I can't recommend it enough!

Blurb

Tom, shy office clerk by day and drawer of foxes by night wakes up one Monday knowing the most extraordinary week of his life is about to begin. In five days time a lifelong ‘secret’ will be made gloriously public—but will it mean losing the person he loves most?

Getting married…

It seems like only yesterday Tom changed nappies and sang nursery rhymes to a laughing baby. He relishes the demands of being a daddy; especially teaching his little girl to draw and paint as she grows up.
But the years tick by and times change. Long-buried secrets must come to the surface which may test even the strongest ties.

Tom and Lawrence…

He writes a list of all the things he has to do before the weekend and sticks it in the middle of his wall. The names and goals hang like threads of a spider’s web, inevitably leading to the centre, and all to the same place.

Dear Mona Lisa…

How to explain?
Each morning he notes the colours of dawn, listens to the birds and waits for the perfect moment. In one hand rests the balance of life and a terrible responsibility, in the other a wedding ring. Difficult days and the past loom, but his friends rally round and one by one the words come to life.
Everyone waits as Tom finds the strength to open up and set free the secrets of his heart in a celebration of family, friendship and love.
A quirky story of modern life, set within the breathtaking landscape of Bradford.

HAPPY OCTOBER!

April 13, 2017

A Spy, a Boxer and a Dancer walk into a bar...

It has been a while since my last post and I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying these first couple weeks of April.

For me, I am just about halfway through NaNoWriMo—National Novel Writing Month. I'm also just about halfway through my current project. I'm not really at that sharing stage, but I will say it's the first true mm romance I have written in a while. There is nothing supernatural going on, and no one is getting murdered. Not yet, anyway. I wouldn't want to rule anything out!

Over the last few months, I've also been reading. My most current read is also the object of my cover lust.

Go ahead, it's right down there, look your fill. We've got time.

But Last Dance of the Sugar Plum by Claire Davis and Al Stewart is not just a gorgeous cover, it's also something you don't find much in mm romance. It's completely unexpected. Completely new.

If you've read Davis and Stewart before, you know the beauty of their language, the uniqueness of their characters. Now imagine Davis and Stewart had a threeway with Guy Richie. I'm pretty sure this would be the result.

A romance that's part spy story, part mystery, with humor and madness, and enough twists to leave you reeling.

Jonathan has suppressed a code deep in his mind, and it's Anton's job to retrieve it, for all their sakes. There's dancing and memories, a locked room and someone is always watching.

Follow the clues, if you can.

Last of the Sugar Plum is now available for purchase on AMAZON and also to read for Kindle Unlimited Subscribers!

I can't recommend it enough!

TICK-TOCK-TICK-TOCK-TICK-TOCK

Jonathan is a spy.

Anton is Jonathan’s ‘keeper’.

Jonathan is a spy with a code implanted deep in his subconscious, so deeply he can’t remember—anything at all.

Anton is an interrogator intent on retrieving the code, whatever the cost.

But sometimes they dream of dark tunnels and locked-up rooms, and then they both scream.

TICK-TOCK-TICK-TOCK-TICK-TOCK

Along comes Harry, who seems to have all the answers…but who is he, and which side is he on?

TICK-TOCK-TICK-TOCK-TICK-TOCK

Bang!

For many months, Jonathan and Anton live apart from the world in a hazy, dreamlike state, only interrupted by interrogations and a healthy fear of HQ. One day, they watch a dance performance, and memories begin to unwind… A ticking clock… Betrayal… Missions… Always the scent of oranges. But with clarity, comes a return of powerful emotions…

Last Dance of The Sugar Plum is an exciting spy thriller with as many twists and turns as a maze.

CHOCOLATE BUNNIES! REMEMBER TO EAT THE EYES FIRST!

The road to hell... or Finally! A subscriber freebie!

My author to-do list is overwhelming.

It turns out that there's a lot more to writing than just writing. There are covers to design and websites to keep up-to-date, blogging and a million other little things. Remember, those cute animal memes don't post themselves on Facebook. There's also research. Yes, research! A person doesn't just know how long it takes a body to decompose! You've got to look the stuff up!

So, you put all that together, add in your real life stuff—jobs, family, after-hours life of crime—and it's hard to cross things off your list.

It becomes far too easy to fall short of your good intentions!

While I've done a few InstaFreebie offers over the last two months, one thing on my to-do list has been to add a free book download, exclusive to my darling mailing list subscribers.

I've finally managed to do just that!

I do plan to change the free book download every few months, but for now, subscribers new and old can receive an eBook copy of Dalton Sikes Finds a Body.

Click HERE to subscribe and you'll get a link to download your free eBook.

If you're already on the list, no worries! You can still use the link above to enter your email and receive your download link without signing up twice.

Finally, something to mark off that damned list! But remember to keep an eye out and I'll let you know when the list members freebie changes!

HAPPY READING!

Writing, Reading, Filth and Freebies

I am shocked that January is almost over! It's been a busy month and I still have so many things I need to finish. With February looming just a few days away, I'm guessing it's not all going to happen this month.

I have a big project that I'm working on, a completed first draft I've barely touched and a final installment on my MM serial that I am almost finished with. There's even a story I need to write for an upcoming anthology I haven't even thought about yet!

I'm a slow writer, but a faster reader. So, while I haven't finished my own projects, I have some recommendations for you.

I've also got a FREEBIE of my own to give away! :D

I just started a new book by Hunter Frost released by Dreamspinner Press. I'm in lust with the cover! And if you are in lust with New Orleans, ghost tours and tattooed men, I suggest picking this one up!

Check it out HERE

Also, make sure to visit Hunter's website and take a look at her other books HERE. I've enjoyed everything I've read from this author, but might I suggest Delivery or Destiny?

Another must read is Lunchtime Nibbles. It's one of my favorite books of 2016!

LUNCHTIME NIBBLES IS ON SALE FOR .99¢ ON AMAZON! Grab it HERE before the sale ends!

Cheese & Pickles is fun and filthy, but like all Claire Davis and Al Stewart books, it's also real and genuinely good!

Make sure to check out their website HERE to find out about their other books and upcoming releases!

And keep an eye our for their new story about a spy and a dancer that is due out in April! Eeek! I can't wait!!!!

This month I also had the pleasure, PLEASURE, in all caps, of beta reading the next two installments of the Nortown series by Ofelia Gränd

Have you ever done a beta read? It's fun in that you get to read! It's stressful in that you have to try and keep all the elements of the story in mind, make note of all the questions you wished were answered, make sure everyone is wearing (or not wearing) the same clothes from one second, to the next, and that all the little plot elements work for you as a reader. It's not just about letting yourself get swept away and enjoy it. Though, there is a lot of that too.

So, Once in a Underworld (Book 4) is coming! And, if you are a fan of the series, or just want to hop in now (they all work as standalones), this one is just plain fun!

What will happen when crime comes to Nortown?! Well, I won't tell you but you can be pretty sure someone's getting laid! :D

Just Words (Book 4.5)? Okay, it's really just some fun filth with our favorite lumberjack and his high-maintenance boyfriend! LOL

You can check out Ofelia's website HERE and make sure to catch up on the Nortown Series!!

And Now For a Winter Freebie!

As for the Freebie I promised at the beginning—I do go on and on don't I?—I'm celebrating finally making myself rewrite the blurb to this book with a giveaway!

Cold Fingers, my paranormal romance is now available for FREE through February 5th on InstaFreebie!

Blurb

Drawing Penises

Drawing Penises

an Almost But Not Quite flash

“You have a visitor.”

“Is it my brother?” Matthew asked without looking up from the puzzle that lay mostly in pieces on the table in front of him. He had managed to connect the outside, creating the frame, and had just started sorting the other pieces in earnest.

He wasn’t particularly interested in a finished Venus de Milo—he had asked for Michaelangelo’s David, but beggars couldn’t be choosers. Besides, he had a marker somewhere, and he would draw on a penis as soon as he was finished.

He always drew on a penis.

“No, it’s that pretty blond again.” The nurse’s voice held a tone obviously meant to make him feel guilty. “You know, the one you refused to see on Christmas. It looks like he brought you a present.”

That got Matthew’s attention, and he looked up for the first time since the Nurse had walked in the room. He loved presents. He especially loved them tied up in string or adorn with bows or bells; anything flashy really.

He loved flashy. It reminded him of Max.

Matthew made his way down the hall, the sound of his slippers moving from linoleum to carpet and back again giving him something to focus on other than what he would say when faced with someone from his past. In the visitor area,  a large room tastefully decorated in creams and honey colored wood, he found Timothy sitting on an oversized loveseat and looking nervous.

He was as handsome as Matthew remembered.

Pulling his robe tighter around him, Matthew wished he had bothered with a comb. A quick brush of his teeth had probably been in order too, but he hadn’t wanted to give Nurse Ratchet the satisfaction.

He cleared his throat and Timothy’s eyes lit up at his approach. It made him look even more handsome.

Damn. Why had he gone and fucked it all up?

“Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.” Timothy’s voice was cheery, and he stood, smiling and held out a brightly wrapped box.

Matthew knew the staff would have searched any packages brought in from the outside before letting it into the patient’s area, and the fact that Timothy had gone through the trouble of lugging a roll of paper, ribbon, tape and scissors with him? It warmed Matthew’s heart.

“Thank you.”  He took the box and leaned in to kiss Timothy on the cheek. He let the kiss linger a little longer than needed, enjoying the warmth and the contact. It had been so long.

And the man smelled so good.

When he felt Timothy shiver, he pulled away and tried not to look at his mouth.

Damn it.

“Do you want to open it now?”

“I’ll wait.” Matthew watched Timothy’s smile dim, and he searched his socially rusty brain for something he could say to fix it. “I’d like to visit first if that’s okay?”

“Of course.” Timothy sat and patted the cushion next to him in invitation. “How is it here?”

It was an unexpected question, and Matthew debated what to say. He thought about telling Timothy how people didn’t touch you here. Not sexually, though they didn’t do that either, but not even casually. A touch on the arm, a tap on the shoulder, the accidental brush of a body as someone passed you in the hall.

Strange how the absence of something so simple could make you feel so alone.

“It’s okay. I like my therapist.” It was true. Dr. Taylor was the only person here that Matthew didn’t loath. “I’m getting better.”

That was true too. At least Dr. Taylor seemed to think so.

“That’s wonderful.” Timothy smiled, and regret at how things played out at the end was an ache in Matthew's stomach.

The whole break-in and attempted murder thing had fucked it all up. It could have all been so different. Matthew could have been sharing a small house with Timothy somewhere, could easily imagine them making dinner in a tiny kitchen, snuggling on the couch and tumbling into bed together.

While it had lasted, what they’d had, it had been good, but he had made a choice. It had been the wrong choice, because now, with a clear head, Matthew knew he shouldn’t have tried to kill Daniel. His brother’s boyfriend had never deserved to die at all. His brother Max had. He still did, but Matthew had learned not to say.

Maybe that was the progress Dr. Taylor was talking about. Maybe if he could keep not saying it, he’d finally get to go home.

He wanted to ask if Timothy still worked for Max, if he was still his brother’s unappreciated assistant working ghastly hours but thought better of it. The question probably fell into the category of things he shouldn’t say.

“I’ve missed you,” Matthew said instead, enjoying the feeling of freedom that letting at least some of his words out left in their wake. He held so much inside.

“I’ve missed you too.”

They spent the rest of the visit in silence, thighs touching from knee to hip and looking out the window at the falling snow.

When the hour was over, and a man in blue scrubs Matthew didn’t recognize escorted Timothy away, he clutched the box to his chest and walked back to his room.

He sat at his table, carefully pushing the puzzle pieces aside, and opened his gift.

He slipped the ribbon off and unwrapped the box, careful not to tear the paper, planning to fold the shiny metallic red sheet and tuck it into a drawer where he kept little things he wanted to be able to pull out and look at again, and again. Inside the package was a diary, and before he could lament his utter lack of privacy he noticed a key nestled in the tissue.

He placed the book down on the table, carefully inserted the key and turned it.

The cover was a soft brown leather, plain and simple, but the pages were a creamy ivory, their edges gold leafed and their corners decorated in winding vines that tangled in and out of each other, sprouting long thorns and fat blossoms.

Matthew flipped through the sheets, enjoying the smell of the paper and stopped to run his fingers over their smooth texture, imagining all the penises he would be able to draw.

Turning back to the first page he smiled at the entry he found there, written in violet ink and unmistakably in Timothy’s precise hand.

My boyfriend forgives me.

Returning home after his father's passing, Maximilian Litt has laid claim to his fortune and taken up the reins to his legacy, a charity organization that had been his father's whole world. But even the weight of the foundation and his handsome administrative assistant can't distract him from the ghosts of his past.
