“Okay, I have a confession to make.”
Simon gives him a look, but, before Benji can answer, the
elevator stops and the doors slide open to let a cluster of people get on.
Simon is forced even closer to Benji. He can feel the soft hair on his arms
brushing his skin and smell the soap that Simon has now had rubbed all over his
body. They finally reach the Ravish floor, walking together past reception and the expansive
glass-walled office of the editor-in-chief. It’s blinds are closed, as always.“I figured out it wasn’t the motherboard on your computer
that first day. I didn’t really need all that time to fix it. All I was doing
was taking things out and putting them back in while I worked up the nerve to
ask you out.” His face is twisted with guilt, as if this ruse has been eating
him alive. Maybe he has more in common with Captain America than he realizes.Simon decides to cut him some slack. “I know. It’s very
endearing. Don’t worry about it.”They turn the corner, past Tia’s office and toward Simon’s
desk. Tia looks up as they pass, tips her head and glances at his borrowed
outfit, then slides him a sly, knowing smile.* * *

My niece saw me reading Spice and asked what it was.
Me: It’s a book about cooking. >.>
Her: Oh. Ew, cooking sucks.
Cooking with a dash of hot ginger action, perhaps?
…because Benji is a redhead. Get it? (I’m sorry)

So I bought Spice earlier today. I’m already almost halfway through and I’m going back and forth between yelling “YOU DUMB IDIOTS” at my computer screen and squealing and giggling uncontrollably. 10/10 A+ would recommend.
The perfect response, really.

Eros, what are your tips for a good friends with benefits situation? I'm in one now and loving it, but don't really see a way it's not going to end in flames and defining boundaries is proving tricky.
Friends with benefits is one of those things—like subprime mortgages or sex on the beach—that is much better in theory than in practice. If you’re careful and avoid the pitfalls it can work. But you’re more likely to end up either screwed over or with sand rubbing your delicate bits raw. How to avoid this unpleasantness?
-Be honest. Both of you. About what you want and what’s working, how often you’ll hook up and where and who will know. But be honest with yourself, too. Are you avoiding commitment with someone else? Are you settling for just sex when you have complex feelings, but the other person doesn’t?
-Have an endpoint. Go in with an ending already in mind. If it’s gotten complicated and you can’t see how to get to that endpoint without heartache? You have already passed the expiration date.
-Don’t date. Don’t go out to dinners, don’t call them up because something reminded you of them, don’t give gifts, don’t leave a toothbrush at their place, don’t draw your names inside a cartoon heart on the fogged up mirror after a hookup. Never, ever do brunch. This muddies the boundary of friendship and relationship.
-See other people. And be comfortable with them seeing other people. It’s important both to not close yourself off to a potential relationship, and because feelings of jealousy can mean the dreaded “it’s complicated” status has come home to roost.
-No sleepovers. Sleeping over can lead to cuddling, cuddling can lead to emotional intimacy, emotional intimacy can lead to (there it is again) feelings and confusion.
-Try not to fall in love. Seems like the simplest rule, doesn’t it? Of course you won’t fall in love, that’s the whole point, right? But love has a way of catching you by surprise, of sneaking in even when you’re sure you’ve sealed off all the entrances. (To your heart I mean.)
-Watch out for crabs. This applies to sex on the beach and FWB. Be careful out there with your tender parts.

Got home from work to find this lovely specimen waiting for me.
I was expecting another small book like Pivot & Slip, but this thing’s a monster in comparison!
It’s more than twice as long! Should still be a pretty fun read :)

My Review of Lilah Suzanne’s “Spice”
I have to admit, when I first heard of the pitch of lilahsuzanne‘s second novel, I was already pretty excited to get the book in my hands already.
But when she asked me if I would like to be an advanced reader, my enthusiasm reached a peak, and I’m over the moon to share my feelings on this book with you guys.
The story fits every romcom that I like to usually watch on screen: light, playful, just enough drama to definitely pull me in the story, and just enough sex to make the pickiest of reader happy.
What sets it apart is that I didn’t try to be all blasé about it like I would be with the usual romcom.
The emotions, the reactions, they’re all too honest to even try to act detached and uncaring, really.
See, some writers can pull you in a book, make you love the characters.
And then some writers, like Lilah, manage to make you feel like you’re a part of the story.
Like you belong in this world of cellulose and ink, like the characters are not just people you’re observing from afar, but people you’re befriending.
Let’s just say that I don’t cheer and gasp and threaten bodily harm for sheer stupidity (only to coo happily when the stupidity flies out the window) for just anybody.
But Simon and Benjie?
They’re not just anybody.
And I can’t thank Lilah enough for introducing me to them.
“Spice” will be launched worldwide on April 2nd (here’s a nifty link to buy it from InterludePress or from Amazon) and I can’t wait for you guys to savor it too!

Book Review: Spice
![]()
When Lilah Suzanne, whose writing I adore, approached me with the opportunity to read her new novel before its official release, all I could do was flail and say YES PLEASE!! And so it was with greatest of pleasure that I settled in to read this sweet and endearing novel of two young men learning to love and trust and play. And believe me when I say that it took only the first few pages before I was as smitten with Spice as Simon was with Benji the adorable IT guy.
Spice is not a novel of high intrigue and fast-paced adventure nor a novel of villains and heroes on white steeds, no, Spice is something simpler, something gentler, something so very lovely: Spice is a genuine romance novel. I found such joy in watching the first flutterings of attraction, denial, and flirtation, followed by a charming and heart-warming story of two men falling in love, discovering each other’s hearts and bodies, learning to leave behind old hurts, and realizing that love can be so easy when you let it happen.
The novel is centred around Simon, who wants it all—passion, love, and the joy of knowing he is wanted, needed—and tries so hard to get it that he nearly misses it when it is right in front of him. As a romance and sex columnist, he can so easily see the way through others’ problems but, as is so often the case, he is a little less adept at fixing his own. Enter Benji, the gorgeous IT guy with just enough dorkiness to make him adorable, and whose easy charm slides under Simon’s skin, laying claim to his heart so quickly that it scares Simon, who has all but given up on happily ever after. The progression of their relationship was so natural that at times it felt a bit voyeuristic, or like a sweeter version of HBO’s Looking, and if I have any criticism of the novel it is that what little angst there is is easy dispatched… but really, life has so much angst already, who says my romance novels have to have it too? Besides, more importantly, what Spice did have was Walt, the pit bull. And quite honestly, it never hurts to have a dog as charismatic as Walt, enlivening the quiet moments and infusing the story with a real sense of humour and home.
The worst part about this novel, frankly, was that it has forced me to add yet another item to my list of must haves for potential partners, and item which I fear may render my list, and thus my heart, completely unobtainable for mortal men:
65. Will show up to the vet with epic bedhead and wearing geeky pyjamas in the middle of the night when my dog is sick. Even when we aren’t dating.
Give me this man, and I will ask him to marry me. :)
Spice is available from Interlude Press officially on April 2nd, but if you want a wonderful book to to curl up with while winter fights its way out of March, then you can preorder through the IP website and receive your copy in time for St.Paddy’s Day!
