Medieval Monday | The Viking Game of Hnefatafl

Welcome to Medieval Monday in the Tavern!

You've heard me talk about the Vikings and their games, specifically the one in the photo. Hnefatafl, which translates as "King's table" is one of the world's oldest board games. This was a war game in which there were two groups of pieces—one player had a king, centrally placed on the board, defended by warriors. The other pieces were placed at all four sides of the board which were the attackers. The first player won if he got his king to one of the ...

Friday Feast | Thinking about Mead on this Autumn Day

Welcome to Friday Feast in Mary's Tavern!

You’ve heard me mention many times in the Tavern about serving a cup of mead. Why? Because I’m a historical author who also loves this drink. Waving my hand here—honey lover! Don't you love this label on the bottle?

Mead is basically honey, water, and yeast to help with the fermentation. The flavor of the honey dictates the sweetness, and each batch of mead has its own characteristic based on the flowers, herbs, blossoms, and the land. I've been fort...

Medieval Monday | Word for October

Welcome to the first Medieval Monday of October! I'm enjoying the cooler evenings and settling in to the last three months of the year.

This month's word is one I've always found interesting. Merriam Webster Dictionary describes 'harbinger' as follows: something that foreshadows a future event : something that gives an anticipatory sign of what is to come.

And the archaic definition : a person sent ahead to provide lodgings.

Again, I don't believe I've used this word in one of my stories. ...

#Autumn Newsletter

Discoveries. Adventures. New paths. These words set me on a course this summer to shift my thinking on how I work in my world. I tossed out ideas and systems I had in place for 10 long years. They were no longer serving a purpose. The time had come to stir the pot, clean things out, reorganize priorities, and search for new ideas and tools to streamline my work and personal life.

Well, dear readers, as you can see, this newsletter is one of those projects. I decided to send out my seasonally l...

Medieval Monday | Traveling with the Muses

Stonehenge, England. Photo by John Morgan

Welcome to a brief Medieval Monday in the Tavern, my friends. With spending time with family, going to appointments, and traveling back into the past (my fun time) for research, I don't have a particular topic for today.

As you can see by the photo above, my current research is exploring all those mystical stone monuments. So for now, I'll leave you with a piece of medieval music to stir the muse or transport you back to the medieval era.

Don't for...

Friday Feast | Harvest Cornbread

Welcome to the first full day of autumn on Friday Feast in the Tavern!

I spent yesterday by starting with a long morning walk. The scent of a fall breeze brushed across my face and you should have seen my smile. After four wonderful days of rain, the air was crisp and clean. On my walk, I noticed many fallen acorns. It's hard to fathom that within its small shell all the potential of a giant oak tree is held within. I pushed them aside for the squirrels scampering nearby. The remainder of the ...

Medieval Monday | A Glimpse into "Wishes Under a Highland Star"

Welcome to Medieval Monday in the Tavern! The Highlanders have taken over!

As you can see on the front page of my website, Wishes Under a Highland Star is now featured. I'm beyond excited to share this story with the world. It was truly a labor of love writing Alex and Aine's love story. If you've followed the adventures of the MacFhearguis clan, then you would have met Alex in my debut novel, Dragon Knight's Sword. At that time, the Dragon Knights considered any one from the MacFhearguis clan...
