Medieval Monday | Once a Crusader, He’s Now a Man of the Cloth ~ Brother Cadfael

Welcome to Medieval Monday!

Many years ago, I discovered a wonderful medieval mystery series known as The Cadfael Chronicles by the author Ellis Peters. I devoured these stories! Imagine my surprise when I heard there was a British television series with Sir Derek Jacobi playing Brother Cadfael. I was thrilled and became an instant fan of the show. I loved the history, mystery, scenery, and not only his herb garden, but also his workshop. The music is a perfect accompaniment—sweeping you in and...

Friday Feast | To Dine with Rosemary

Welcome to Friday Feast in Mary's Tavern! Today, I'm dining with one of my wonderful (and favorite) herbs: Rosemary. Or if you prefer the Latin name: Rosmarinus officinalis. This woody, and fragrant herb is abundant in my herb garden. As many gardeners can agree, this plant is hardy and is able to grow in abundance.

When I planted my first garden in June 1994, I wasn't a fan of this herb. Yet I included the small seedling with sage, oregano, horseradish, thyme, yarrow, feverfew, and peppermint...

Medieval Monday | Words and Phrases

Welcome to Medieval Monday in Mary's Tavern! I'm back after spending a week playing and relaxing with my husband. We didn't go far in our travels, but it's amazing what historical places of interest you can visit in your own neighborhood and state. A few places of interest (besides the multiple wineries) were the California Railroad Museum and Sacramento Historic City Cemetery. We were favored with cool and partially cloudy days--excellent for exploring and working off the extra calories. I must...

Friday Feast | Chocolate Chip Scones

Welcome to Friday Feast in Mary's Tavern!

Can you believe we're at the end of July?! Absolutely shocking! Chocolate is on the menu, and I'm sharing a favorite scone recipe. I made a batch last weekend and served them warm with a dollop of whipped cream and nectarine slices. Perfect for a lazy Sunday morning.

As I mentioned on Medieval Monday, the Tavern will be closed all next week. Celebrating my knight's birthday and taking a much needed break to spend time with him. Lots of fun things are...

Medieval Monday | Researching the Vikings

Welcome to Medieval Monday!

Research is an integral part of my books. With each new story, I’m delving into the past for information. I’ve picked up a wealth of knowledge in my travels. Yet books, the internet, and talking to historians remains an excellent source.

In my current work-in-progress, Steinar, The Wolves of Clan Sutherland, book 3, the poet (skald) Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241) plays a significant role in my story, and I’ve enjoyed researching this Icelander.

For now, let me tak...

Medieval Monday | A Shift in Realms on a Journey to the Orkney Islands

Welcome to Medieval Monday and the stirrings of a story...

On my trip five years ago to the Orkney Islands, I discovered a vast landscape steeped in ancient legends, ruins, standing stones, and my fictional world of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland. They emerged quietly before I took my journey across the northern seas and entered with force once I arrived in Kirkwall.

As a man, Magnar MacAlpin was not prone to patience. As a wolf, he was far worse in his demands to see this story written.

Here...

I’m delighted to have a special lady stop by the Tavern on Friday Feast. She can’t stay long since she’s off to work at the Blushing Rose Bakery. However, Eve Brannigan has consented to share one of her favorite recipes. She loves to munch on this while she’s creating a tasty new treat for the bakery.

MM: Welcome, Eve! I’m so happy you could join us and share your recipe for Pumpkin Granola!

EB: Hello all! (Waving to everyone) Ooo…it smells wonderful in the tavern. I hope you enjoy the granola...
