Grade A Stupid by A.J. Lape Series: Darcy Walker, #1
Genre: YA Mystery/Thriller/Humor
Fifteen years ago Darcy Walker’s parents thought it was a good idea to give her a unique name: Darcy, meaning “dark walker.” Whether that was a stroke of genius or stroke of stupid, they nailed the irony. She lacks direction, her grades stink despite a high IQ, she’s boringly average--although admirers claim otherwise--and heaven help her she’s infatuated with a bad-boy.

With her life spiraling out of control, things change when she finds a dead body. It jumpstarts her inner-verb, and she gets caught up in a situation she can’t let go.

Trouble is, will she live to see sixteen?

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Today, I’ll continue the aftermath of the wasp-spider attack from Grand Master’s Game.Last week’s snippet can be read here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2015/11/attacked-by-giant-spiders.html
A woman’s voice shouted, “Make sure they’re dead or restrained.” More footsteps shuffled around them. Breathing heavily, Athanor cradled Violet’s head and peered at her out of the ordinary blue eyes of his natural face. “Are you all right?” She blinked and flexed her arms and legs. Her voice quavered, “Yes, no bones broken; I’m just sore and bruised.” The woman spoke again from nearby, “You should see the doctor. Pity he’s occupied with worse injuries. I’m amazed that hellish beast didn’t cut your throat!”

#ScienceFiction Snippet for #SFFSat from Grand Master's Game

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ I switched stories to give you a Halloween snippet from Grand Master’s Game. Last week’s snippet is here http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
A predatory thought coiled into her mind, and she transmitted silently, “A carnivore hunts our scent.” The Grand Master scanned their surroundings. “I prefer to evade detection.” He pulled Violet to his side and instructed, “Stay close to me and I’ll shield our bodies.” She backed against his firm body and gripped her laser as a precaution. His shield enveloped them, and they stood quietly within its protection. A triangular head with curved mandibles and six large eyes poked over a rock. The head was followed by a long segmented body supported on many short legs. Violet shuddered and pressed closer to Athanor. “I’m imitating a rock,” he sent, “Don’t distract me; I want to taste right.” The shield became opaque, and Violet realized he had layered mineral particles over the surface. The many-legged creature ambled towards them and clambered awkwardly over the fake boulder created by Athanor. The long body wobbled from side to side as it climbed. Joints between its segments gaped and closed as it crawled over their heads.

Conviction (Razia, #3) Sneak Peek:Razia's eyes snapped open and she grasped at the wall to steady herself. She stood outside the supposed poker game location, in a dimly lit alley that smelled like trash. There was something wet leaking from the bin next to her, so she didn't dare sit down. She had fallen asleep against the dirty brick wall for a split second, but was now wide awake and ready for Loeb to come out.
The door remained closed.
Poker, she reasoned, must be Loeb's chosen vice because he'd been there playing this game for over an hour. She wondered how many times he'd have to go to Temple to ask the Great Creator for forgiveness for this break in his piety.
She snorted at her own joke then burped a little beer. She rubbed her face roughly, hoping the increased blood flow would wake her up. She wished she hadn't had that that third beer (or however many she had from Sage's pitcher) at Eamon's, she wished she had some coffee, and she wished Loeb would just get a move on already. She had other pirates to capture, and he was being awfully selfish with her time.
She jutted her lip out and stared at the door, and her eyes began drooping again.
Her mini-computer began buzzing at her hip and she jumped ten feet. Scowling, she answered it without thinking.
"What." She blinked at the face looking back at her and for a brief moment saw Vel. With another shake of her head she realized it was Heelin scowling back at her. "Oh, it's you."
"Yes, it's me." Heelin looked nothing short of livid. "The brother with whom you are supposed to be working."
She grimaced. "Oh God in Leveman's, I don't have time for this."
"Well you'd better make time, because this stupid planet was approved for membership, so Dorst wants me to accompany you on your next excavation."
Excavation, what was that again? She rubbed her eyes, trying to make sense of the word. Slowly, her brain readjusted from a month of bounty hunting back to her life as Lyssa Peate.
Wait, Heelin wanted to go on an excavation with her? "I don't think so."
"I think that you have to since Dorst ordered you to."
"I think that Dorst can get sucked."
"What is with you lately? You look different."
"I what?" she said, looking down at the mini-computer.
"And where are you anyway? Are you in some kind of dark alley? Where are your glasses?"
Razia realized with a jolt of fear that she was, in fact, Razia and not Lyssa, her hair down, no lab coat, no glasses.
"Uh, gotta go!"
She ended the call quickly and breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't expect Heelin to recognize Razia from just a simple phone call. Unlike Lizbeth, who was sharp as a tack and made the connection almost immediately, the Peates seemed more eager to ignore that Lyssa ever existed.
Like Jukin.
She swallowed the lump in her throat, hating herself and her drunkenness for bringing him up. She still had no idea why she'd saved him. She'd told Lizbeth at the time it was because she wanted to believe he was a good person, but there was more to it than that. She was still harboring a little bit of guilt that she had been chosen as Sostas' assistant, and not Jukin.
And perhaps she felt a little responsible for everything Jukin had done.
She belched loudly in the alleyway, ending the drunken philosophical train of thought. In some part of her mind, she wondered if it was a good idea to be out in her current state, but then again, she was simply stalking Loeb. He wasn't going to surprise her and walk out.
Her eyes nearly fell out of her head as Jarvis Loeb exited the bar all by himself.
She braced herself against the wall, waiting to see if his body men were going to join him. Loeb got almost a block before she realized that he was alone. Whether this was some great twist of fate, or maybe some gift from the Great Creator, she didn't know, but it was definitely an opportunity.
She nearly tripped over her own two feet as she barreled after him, the beer sloshing in her stomach uncomfortably.
"OI!" she called out, standing in the middle of the deserted street.
Loeb turned to watch her with an amused look on his face. "Hello there, dear. Are you here to capture me finally?"
"Sure am!" she announced, perhaps louder than she should have.
She walked up to Loeb, who seemed awfully sober to her, and she reared back her fist to strike him. But she was moving so slow, slower than ever, and Loeb easily ducked it. She lurched forward, her center of gravity completely off, and watched the pavement fly up towards her face.
Loeb's hand clamped down on her wrist and she felt cold steel encircle it.

Attacked by Giant Spiders #ScienceFiction Snippet for #WeWriWa from Garnd Master's Game

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Today, I’ll continue the wasp-spider attack scene from Grand Master’s Game.Last week’s snippet can be read here – http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2015/10/halloween-snippet-for-wewriwa-from.html The final sentence is “She was stuck.”
Something grabbed her arm. A large hand thrust a dagger into the monster’s eye, twisting deep into the head; a blood stained hand in a familiar black leather sleeve. Green blood spouted around the blade. The monster jerked and stilled, its jaws still clamped on her neck. Athanor’s grim face hovered over her startled eyes, his teeth bared in a fierce grimace. He grasped the ends of the horrid mandibles, gritted his teeth and exerted his full strength to open the jaws.  Violet toppled onto Athanor’s knees. In the background, the stump of heavy footsteps preceded a shout of command and the zap of heavy weapons. The cavalry had arrived, belatedly.

#SciFi Snippet for #SFFSat from Grand Master's Game

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ I switched stories to give you a Halloween snippet from Grand Master’s Game and some viewers asked how she got rid of the slime. Last week’s snippet is here http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2015/10/halloween-snippet-for-sffsat-from-grand.htmlending in “Where were you?” she demanded angrily.
“Distracted, my brave little pawn. There are scrawls like writing on the opposite side of the domes.” She leaned against his firm chest, breathing in the spicy psi emissions. “I was trapped in the mouth of an enormous worm.” “I see the damage you caused.” Looking down, she saw sinuous streaks in the desert floor left by the agonized writhing of the monster. Its body had vanished under the sands. Athanor remarked casually, “Your shiny coating of slime does not appeal to me. The odor is repugnant.”  Her irritation soothed by his embrace, Violet’s response was mild, “Could be worse. I could have slipped down its gullet. Dunk me in the river!”  “I’ll do better.” Blue psi misted over her body and the slime vanished. She voiced her approval of his technique, “Flashy cleanser.”

Grand Master's Pawn for November's SFR Brigade Showcase

Welcome to the November Showcase of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html
Today, I’ll showcase a longer excerpt from my Grand Master’s Trilogy. Book 1 is on sale for 99c this month and will be free Nov 16-17 and 28-29. Maybe I'll have Book 3 ready to release by the next showcase. Buy links are at the end of the post.
Excerpt from Book 1, Grand Master’s Pawn:Taranis tilted the pole and repelled the raft away from the larger rocks. The raft spun in a half circle, dropped over a small cascade and crashed into a quiet pool, showering them with water. Rotating slowly, the raft drifted away from the splash of the rapids. Violet sat up, clutching her precious pack, and scanned the shore for danger. “Look out!” she shouted to Taranis, and pointed downstream. The calm pool ended in a line of spray where the river roared into a vertical plunge. The raft shot towards the top of the waterfall. Taranis stood, balanced on his toes, and stared ahead from the vantage of his full height. He glanced back at Violet, and shouted above the crash of the water, “The drop is too steep. We must abandon the raft.” Violet staggered to her feet and stared at the rocky shore. Dubious, she shook her head, “How? The current is too fierce to swim to the river bank, and I can’t jump that distance.” Taranis stepped carefully across the raft, took the pack from her grasp, and tossed it onto the rocks at the edge of the water. “Get ready. I’ll throw you onto the land.” She gulped, wide eyed in alarm. How was she supposed to prepare? Without further warning, he caught her round the waist and flung her from the raft. Violet shrieked. She flew over the water, twisting with cat-like agility to land on her hands and feet. Her hands stung from the impact, but she was safe on the shore. She turned to watch Taranis. He ran with the pole in his hands to the edge of the raft, stuck the pole into the water and vaulted to the rocks. He staggered on a slippery stone, and Violet grabbed his wrist and tugged to prevent him from falling. Instead, she slammed against his body with her face pressed against his bare chest, tingling with psychic power. Immediately, she felt foolish. She lifted her head to break the sizzling contact. They stepped apart, and he stared down at her from those unreadable black eyes in his solemn face. “Sorry,” she muttered. She lowered her eyes and reddened with embarrassment. Was this athletic man really her Grand Master? The one she had taunted as too decrepit to participate in a mission. He patted her on the back. “It was a wild ride. You are fearless.”

Halloween snippet for #WeWriWa from Grand Master's Game

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Today, I’m switching to a Halloween special – an attack scene from Grand Master’s Game.

Massive creatures bounded through the airlock door. Twice the size of a man, they were a nightmare cross of spider and wasp with eight legs, stubby wings, yellow and black stripes, and huge mandibles like a pair of scythes. One hurtled straight at Violet, jaws open like giant scissors.
She dodged aside too late; her attacker jammed her neck in its pincers and dragged her off her feet. She swung from its mandibles, her hands and feet struggling for purchase on its hard carapace. An acid odor filled the air and the enormous head loomed over her face, eight giant eyes next to hers.
Energized by terror, Violet grabbed hold of one pincer and scraped her fingernails across the nearest eyes. The spider-wasp jerked violently, flinging Violet’s body from side to side. Biting back the pain, she clawed at another eye and twisted her legs, bracing her knees against the base of its fore limbs. The jaws held firm on her neck; she was stuck.

Grand Master’s Game is FREE this weekend – Oct 31st to Nov 1st.
