Halloween Snippet for #SFFSat from Grand Master's Game

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ This week, I’ve switched stories to give you a seasonal snippet from Grand Master’s Game.

Violet stood on a yielding surface inside a cavity not much larger than her body. A circle of gray worms wriggled at the periphery of the space. She shuddered and winged a shout for help. Where was Athanor when she needed him?
The gray worms writhed and the cavity contracted around her. Violet bit back a scream as the surface wobbled under her feet. Insight slammed into her mind; she was trapped in the giant maw of a monster and the worms were tentacles around its mouth.
She staggered, slipping inexorably down its throat. Desperate to stop her descent, she dropped the laser and grabbed the snaky tendrils. The light of the laser spiraled down the open gullet and vanished. Grimly determined, Violet hung to the slippery tentacles and speared psi energy into the hungry mind. The monstrous body thrashed in agony, spitting Violet out of its mouth.
Yelling wildly, Violet burst from the sands and shot high into the air. Strong arms caught her. “Where were you?” she demanded angrily.

Grand Master’s Game is FREE this weekend (31st Oct to 1st Nov): http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0104OFJJ8
Please return to http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ and read the other snippets. Your comments are welcome as always.

New Release - Saving Casey by Liza O'Connor

Meet JessMy dog Jess wanted to be in my first published novel, (Saving Casey was originally published in late 2012, as my very first novel. I have my rights to the book back, so I am republishing it, now as my 18thbook.)  However, when Jess discovered that she would be dying with my heroine, Cass, at the end of chapter one, she was NOT a happy camper. I assured her that she would come back. I had originally planned for her to come back WITH my heroine, but honestly that seemed to be a stretch. First of all, the hospital would have a fit if a puppy appeared in Cass’s room and if Jess appeared at their mansion, Terra Trauma, the butler would have had it sent to the pound.  So I decided Jess would spend a life with someone else, then I’d bring him back in the Epilogue as an adorable small pup.

I also made Jess a boy in the book. Jess doesn’t mind, for she’s a tom dog.  (That’s like a ‘tom boy’ for girls). She raises her leg to piss, just like male dogs do. She’s even been known to climb on the back of a little bull dog and hump. So I’m thinking in a previous life, Jess was a boy dog, and that’s why she didn’t complain when I made her a boy. The reason I made her a boy was to improve the flow and understanding when Cass (female) would talk about her dog.  It saved me from the confusion of having ‘she’ references for both my heroine and the dog.Clearly book Jess had another life while Cass struggled with her situation, but what type of life was it?Jess and I discussed the matter. She demanded I make her a German shepherd or a dire wolf. Since the latter is extinct, we settled on a German shepherd. If you remove any hints of size, she does sort of look like a German shepherd mix.  However, if you put a ruler to her side, the illusion crumbles. The one foot ruler only needs another inch to reach her back height. But otherwise she resembles a blonde German Shepard, so the yet to be written back story is that while Cass was struggling to survive her new life, Jess was a bomb dog for the army. Unlike many dogs, she can actually understand the English language and can read a person’s emotions, so she manages to save her dog handler countless times and keep him safe through his tour. They did such a good job, he was allowed to keep Jess when he returned to the states. She had a good life with him and his family, saved his son on many occasions. The boy had a penchant for finding trouble, but she managed to keep him alive while he grew up. And when Jess died of old age, no one cried harder than the young man. Still, Jess missed his Cass, and this time when he arrived in heaven he convinced the angels that Cass deserved a better life, and if they’d just get him in close proximity to the only man Cass had ever loved, he could bring home the bacon.  Next thing, he woke up in a box of puppies in the break room of some corporation. Before the wrong person grabbed him up, he escaped the box and snuck off, in search of a man he’s never met. How on earth would he find the right guy? Then passing a door he heard Cass’s name spoken. A young woman was telling a ruggedly handsome guy of Cass’s struggles. This was the fellow! Now Jess just had to convince him to grab the pup at his feet before he headed off to find Cass… but could he do that?

Saving CaseyByLiza O’Connor

Book 1 of theRequires Rescue SeriesContemporary Suspense
BlurbWhen 80 year old Cass Goldman learns she has inoperable cancer, she decides to end her life, peacefully on her terms. So imagine her horror when she wakes to find herself in a hospital with strange rich people staring at her. It’s not until the doctor arrives to examine her that she realizes she’s no longer old. She’s in the body of a seventeen year old teen named Casey.Unfortunately, her new body comes with some serious baggage. First of all, the kid has burned every bridge imaginable. Secondly, those ‘people’ in her room are her outrageously rich parents and while the Dad seems friendly, the mother wants nothing to do with her. The moment they take her home to a horrifically huge mansion, which she dubs Tara, she’s abandoned to the care of the butler. While Cass is determined to turn this train wreck of a life around, doing so is far harder than she expected. In fact, without help, she’ll end up dead just like the last occupant of this body. Thankfully, her dad has his hunky head of security become her body guard. Between her eighty years of life lessons and hunky Troy’s help, she just might live long enough not to be jail bait.
EXCERPTSomething soft and warm settled in Cass’s lap. At first she thought Troy had rested his hand next to hers, wanting her to make the first move, but she didn’t recall Troy’s hand being soft and furry.Looking down, Cass gasped at the small brown puppy in her lap. Its black muzzle and black tipped ears made it the spitting image of Jess as a pup.She hadn’t realized how much she missed her dog from her prior life until this instant. Tears of joy and anguish overwhelmed her as she gathered the tiny handful of fur into her hands and kissed its sweet face. In return, it licked her hand with its black tongue. Her mouth opened in shock. Has Jess somehow finagled his way back to me?“Where’d you get him?”“At work. I’d just learned Dan has been lying to me about how you were doing. As I typed my resignation on the computer, I felt something climb on my shoe. I looked down and saw this little guy.”“How did a tiny puppy get in your office?”“I still don’t know how he managed to travel so far. However, his litter mates resided in the break room in a box with a sign saying, Free Pups, Part Shiba Inu, part Mystery.”The same as Jess.“He has a black tongue, did you notice?” he asked. She kissed Jess’s nose. “I did.”Troy sat beside her and leaned in to tease Jess’ mouth open, but the pup stubbornly resisted. So like Jess. Was it possible? What had happened to her wasn’t possible. Could the impossible happen twice? Was this her reward for turning Casey’s life around and helping others?

ABOUT THE AUTHORLiza O’Connor is a nut. Not a real nut, but she is prone to being a smart ass at times, and not surprisingly her heroines say odd and inappropriate things in her book, as well. So even in a suspense novel you can expect to laugh along the way. That’s because Liza loves to see humor in the crazy world around her.Saving Casey was actually the first book Liza published. Having recently reclaimed her rights to the book, she is happily re-publishing it as her 18th book. And because her books sell better when in a series, she using Saving Casey to kick of a new series called Requires Rescue. It will be different from her other series where the same characters show up in each book. This series will be about strong women who are trying to go it alone, only when help is offered, they have the good sense to accept the helping hand, because in all of our lives, there will come a time you need someone else to help you. Being strong doesn’t make us invincible. Book 1 is Casey/Cass’ story. Book 2 will be about an entirely different young woman who desperately needs help before she’s murdered on the streets of NYC. Book 3, well the plot is super unique, and more books will follow. You’ll be able to read the series in any order you want, but in each case, you’ll have a strong young woman, a guy stepping up to help when no one else does, and danger galore with humor stuffed in anywhere I can. I hope you’ll come along with me so you can laugh, love, and get revenge.

Can FREE Promotions Help Indie Authors?

October Promotion of A Tale of Two Colonies:
As an Indie author, I appreciate free promotion. But, how well does it work? In September, I ran a small paid promotion on another book and essentially broke even after a week. This month, I tested a different strategy on a stand-alone book.  Using free sites only, I promoted the ebook FREE from Oct 16-20th and then at 99c for the rest of the month.
Here are the results:
eBook FREE for Oct 16-20  A total of 1796 copies given away.

I acknowledge help with retweeting from the members of the eNovelAuthorsatWork group and a catchier book description with advice from Bryan Cullen’s FB group Selling for Authors.
My thoughts:Free promotion can work if you have a good “street team” for sharing. The boost is temporary. Discounting to 99c helps to track the results and brings in more readers.

Fall Flowers and Butterflies of the Piedmont

For a complete change, I’ll showcase the wildlife around the Atlanta area. The Piedmont region of the Southeast US includes north Georgia and Alabama in the southern reaches of the Appalachian mountains. I am illustrating some of the showier specimens I have seen in recent weeks. Yellow, white and purple are common flower colors.  Wild yellow sunflowers are bright spots in rural roadsides and cleared areas.
Purple asters are popular with butterflies.
I watched several butterflies visit one clump of purple asters in a sunny corner of the garden. The Gulf Fritillary is a large orange butterfly.
The Common Buckeye with its large spots can be cryptic against the leaf litter. Can you see it?

The wedding blasts continue in 8 sentences for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Today, I’ll continue the horrid wedding scene from my WIP, Grand Master’s Mate, Book 3 in the trilogy. Violet and her Grand Master, Athanor, are at her friend Tessa’s wedding when the Red Queen, Morrigu, drops in, explosively. Am I channeling Jedi knights here? A lady in a pink dress popped in to help save the wedding. Last Sundays’ snippet ended with:  Alarmed by the double threat, the Red Queen broke away. You can read the rest here:  http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
Her red figure whirled and dissipated. Just before she vanished, Athanor threw his dagger at her. The blade clattered to the floor, its tip stained in blood. He had scored a hit. Muting his power, Athanor switched to his disguise as a precaution. He sagged into a chair, bowed his head in his hands and groaned, “She escaped. By the horn of Dagda, where in the voidal galaxy will she hide?” His mind blurred in exhaustion from the tremendous outflow of his energy. Violet placed her hand on his bare neck and emitted her empathy to recharge his psi power.
Escaped again? I’ll have to switch to something different next time.

Wedding interruptions continue - Snippet for #SFFSat from Grand Master's Mate

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ My contribution this week is from my WIP, Grand Master’s Mate, Book 3 in the Grand Master’s Trilogy. This scene, the interrupted wedding, takes place early in the book. I apologize for the repetition to anyone from weekend writing warriors. Violet and Athanor are at the wedding of her friends, Tessa and Phineas. The Red Queen Morrigu has crashed the wedding. Last week, the snippet ended with Athanor dropping his disguise to protect the wedding guests. You can read it here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2015/10/2nd-snippet-for-sffsat-from-interrupted.html
His mind merged with Violet’s and he griped, “She looks more devilish than ever.” “Let me help.” Pressing her hand on his shoulder, Violet supplemented his energy. Athanor concentrated on protecting the innocent attendees of the ceremony from Morrigu and from his own deadly psi emissions. He couldn’t easily attack Morrigu at the same time. Athanor commented to Violet, “Her fourth arm’s a fake. You severed it in the battle and she cannot easily generate a new one.” Swinging towards Athanor’s tall figure, Morrigu yelled, “Griffin, you’re a voidal, half-blind fool, protecting the unpowered norms. By Ragnar’s fire, I’ll blast your remaining eye and slaughter your puny pawn.”  A tsunami of red psi energy smashed against Athanor. His hatred congealing into icy steel, Athanor stood firm, holding the psychic screen over the wedding attendees. Grimacing in fury, the Red Queen zapped red rays at Athanor, again and again. Her attacks were futile. She was unable to penetrate his shield, strengthened by his link with Violet. An impasse.

Peter Vialls - Interview and Release of Impcatcher

My good friend Peter will introduce his latest release and his Sorrel novels. Thanks for stopping by, Peter. First off, tell us about your newest release – story line, genre, and a character or two that the reader should be on the lookout for.

I'm just about to release Impcatcher– an urban fantasy. Magic relies on the summoning and binding of imps and elementals – when sorcerers get things wrong, small, giggling psychopathic creatures can make trouble. Tal Djandiss, the impcatcher of the title, has the uneviable job of dealing with the escapees and troublemakers in his home town, Freebridge. Of course, as the novel begins, he discovers that something far more lethal is on the loose. My favourite character in the novel isn't a person at all – Puddle is a powerful and malevolent water elemental, imprisoned but still dangerous. Puddle isn't the elemental's real name – it prefers to call itself “Slaughterer of the Dry” or “Great Lord of Water”, but Tal calls it Puddle. Which probably indicates, rightly, that Impcatcher has a degree of humour even when it is at its most serious.

What can we read by you at the moment?

My first set of books are the fantasy trilogy Sorrel in Scarlet, Sorrel Snowbound and Sorrel in Silver. My titular pilot flew triplanes in the war against the dragonlords who rule her world – which the humans lost. Sorrel kept fighting – at the beginning of Sorrel in Scarlet, she gets blown out of the sky by Wrack, one of the dragonlords, and her běte noire. Both end up crashing in the Chasm, a gigantic rift in the world created by an earlier war between elves and serpent people (you'll have gathered that the history of Sorrel's world is complex!). The first book focuses on her struggle to survive despite the nightmarish beings occupying the Chasm – and on her continuing conflict with Wrack. As you'll have worked out, my novels aren't set in “typical” fantasy worlds – Sorrel in Scarlet is best described as a steampunk lost world novel with dragons.

You're self-published?

I keep missing a traditional publishing deal by the skin of my teeth. The acquisitions editor of a major UK publisher liked Sorrel in Scarlet, but his board turned it down at the last minute. And Impcatcher was picked up by another UK publisher, but the publishing house got bought out by a new owner who then turned it down again.

What’s next on your to-do-list as far as your writing career?

I'm already working on Street Demons, the sequel to Impcatcher, and I'm also thinking about a couple of Sorrel short stories.

What are the most significant malign influences on you and your writing?

Too many to list them all, but (roughly by my age when they were important): Thunderbirds – when I was very small, this was the epitome of action and adventure, and taught me about speed and pacing. Andre Norton – the grand dame of SF, who confirmed that loners and outsiders could be heroes. Dungeons & Dragons – I started rolegaming when I was 14, when D&D was only a couple of years old, and it taught me that I could tell stories. And Doctor Who – which proved that strange, quirky characters were interesting. Are any of those malign? D&D, definitely. I also learned from D&D that all rolegamers are twisted, evil monsters who worship Satan and eat babies. Got me bang to rights, guv. ;-)

Does that make you a geek, or have you grown out of D&D?

I created my rolegaming world, Mhorann, in about 1980 – it's still going strong, and still developing, 35 years later, and I'm still running regular game scenarios in Mhorann. I enjoy world building and creating stories. I'll add that none of my fiction is set in Mhorann – rolegaming scenarios usually don't make good books. If that makes me a geek, I don't care – D&D isn't something you need to grow out of. It grows and develops. I know a good number of people my age and older who still play, and others older than me who have only just started rolegaming.

I've heard a strange whisper that you've actually written for Doctor Who – or is it just a vicious rumour?

It's all true. Doctor Who – the TV series – vanished in 1989. My drama society were looking for something “different” and I suggested, in jest, that a Doctor Who stageplay could be good. I should have known better. The rest of the club committee thought it was a great idea, and I was persuaded to write the script (my arm did eventually heal). We wrote to the BBC, who gave us permission to put on the play, and so we presented “The Empress of Othernow” to great praise and full houses in 1993. We had real cyberman costumes, laser blasters, Roman centurions, and even a TARDIS that materialised as if by magic in front of the audience, courtesy of an effects trick that dated back to Victorian times (a gauze, for those who understand such things).
Ten years later, the club wanted to do a sequel to Empress, so I wrote Shattertime, which was even more ambitious and involved Sea Devils – we wrote to the BBC for permission, and after a long delay they wrote back turning us down flat. A year later they reported that Doctor Who was returning – I still reckon Russell Davies didn't want us competing with him!

You've not said much about you in real life.

I don't admit I exist in real life – anyone meeting me for real is clearly suffering from a severely deranged imagination and needs professional help. Any rumours that I'm a solicitor (attorney to the Americans) are denied, and I have an alibi.

Slightly more seriously, I suspect I've already said enough to indicate that I'm over fifty; I'm happily married and I've two adult children. I didn't eat either of them (or any others) when they were babies, which I presume means I lose my “archetypal D&Der” label. I'd add that both my children are keen rolegamers. It's all my fault!

Aurora's disclaimer: The scripting expert, Peter, invented the questions as well as his answers. I highly recommend his Sorrel novels.

Surviving Sojourn by Liza O'Connor

Pane is the product of one of the God crew mating a sentient orangutan during an era when Zousan sent his fellows out to teach sentients not to kill each other. The crew called it the Make Love Not War campaign.
And it resulted in a great many baby Gods.
Normally, the God’s DNA overwhelms the other species resulting in pure God DNA in the offspring.Except, on occasion, it turns out the sentient creature will have stronger, better DNA in some sections of the DNA strand resulting in a mix breed rather than a pure God. That is how Pane came to be.
While Zousan was worried when Athena took a liking to Pane—(He did not want furry grandkids), overtime, he grows very fond of Pane. He promotes him to top shepherd and constantly praises him for his fabulous ability to get sentients to cooperate with one another and solve their own problems. This is critical to the PATH of LIGHT ‘s success upon the final collapse. The contract Zousan signed severely limits the times Zousan or any of his crew can intercede to save the various sentients needed to save the Path of Light. So Pane’s incredible gift of persuasion, foresight, and genuine love for his sentients makes all the difference in their battle to ensure the Path of Light triumphs over darkness. Over time, Zousan come to love Pane like a son. He could not be prouder of his top Shepherd. But the sentient computer Marybell senses her Pane beloved needs physical love, so Marybell suggests and Zousan acquires a Tea Cup Puppy that resembles Pane a great deal. When the puppy licks Pane’s nose, he licks the puppy and a love bond is set forever.
Ah, Puppy Love!

Surviving SojournByLiza O’Connor BlurbAn alien species is removing human colonies from planets, but to where, no one knows. Sojourn, along with the Emperor’s daughter and their crew, must find this unknown species and negotiate a treaty before the Empire’s army declares war on all non-human races. Those who do not follow the Path of Light would prefer to kill all the non-human sentient beings before they are even aware they are under attack. Matters turn bleak for the Path of Light when Sojourn’s ship crash-lands on Terranue before their journey even begins.
ExcerptZousan smiled as he turned from his monitor. “Marybell, I have a great wish to reward Pane for his extraordinary work getting the alien bias removed from the books so Drogan could return to Captain Longfellow’s service. “He did more than that,” the sentient computer replied. “By not placing Drogan on the crew list, your father has been under the presumption he died and thus has made no further attempts to kill the poor fellow.”Zousan had wished he’d known what an ass his father intended to be. Then he would have bothered writing a trillion rules to stop his father from cheating. But no, he mistakenly believed he and his brothers as sisters had been successful with their intervention and his father had realized he needed to stop controlling all of their lives. Given all the troubles his father had plagued him with, he worried what happened to Poseidon’s fishing trip and Hade’s desire for a warm climate. He doubted his father had played fair with them anymore than he had with Zousan.“What does Pane want more than anything?”“To be woken with kisses,” she replied. “I thought you loved Pane?” Zousan challenged.“I do!”“Then why did you suggest I find him another woman to warm his bed?”“I suggested no such thing! I said he wanted to be woken with kisses.”“And how do you propose we achieve the matter? I guarantee you no female on this ship will accept the job.”“Well, I would, if I could, but I can’t. But I have found a cute little tea cup poodle to do the trick.”“There’s a planet with sentient tea cups?” Zousan asked. He was definitely demoting whoever made tea cups sentient.“Actually one your idiots did try to make sentient tea cups, to prank you, but when he poured the hot water into the cups, I made it so hot the cups melted, spilling hot water all over the idiot.”“Why didn’t you tell me about this before?” “We weren’t on speaking terms back then. You preferred your interface.”“That was a huge mistake on my part. One in which I’m most thrilled to have changed.”“Thank you. I much prefer our current relationship as well.”“So, back to the original topic. What type of Tea Cups are able to kiss Pane awake?”“It’s a puppy. A very tiny puppy. So small, he’ll fit in a tea cup. Which means Pane can keep him in his pocket so he doesn’t have to worry about the little fellow when he’s working.”“Then let’s get him a teacup puppy. He’s more than earned those kisses.

In a voice like dry leaves shivering in the breeze, Amarylla called, “Brightness will shelter the unpowered.” Her white light ballooned round the distraught wedding party. Released from guard duty, Athanor zoomed toward Morrigu like a tall blue flame. The Grand Masters collided in midair. Beams of red and blue scissored through the atrium. Livid coils of psi energy surged through the air, crackling between the two combatants. Brandishing her sword, Violet leaped into the fray and her star mark blazed purple fire. Alarmed by the double threat, the Red Queen broke away.

2nd Snippet for #SFFSat from the interrupted wedding in Grand Master's Mate

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ My contribution this week is from my unedited WIP, Grand Master’s Mate, Book 3 in the Grand Master’s Trilogy. This scene, the interrupted wedding, takes place early in the book. I apologize for the repetition to anyone from weekend writing warriors. Violet and Athanor are at the wedding of her friends, Tessa and Phineas. Last week, the snippet ended in an explosion. You can read it here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
Screams mingled with the tinkle of glass shards on the stone-tiled floor. Menacing psi pressure vibrated through the room. Eyes flaring ruby light, Morrigu dropped into the central space. Her long blonde braids and four red-skinned arms were a nightmarish hybrid of Celtic and Hindu myths. Tessa crumpled in a dead faint. Phineas caught her in his arms and backed away from the horrid scarlet beams of the Red Queen. She had violated the essential ban against exposing normal people to unshielded psi energy. Sweeping her gaze around the atrium, Violet was startled by the devastating effects of Morrigu’s raw power. Half of the wedding guests had collapsed in psychic trauma and the rest were rigid with shock. His face blanched, Srini clutched at the chair back in front of him and slid to the floor. Ears folded back and trembling, Lira bared sharp teeth and spat at the terrible apparition.
