The Complete Grand Master’s Trilogy - #ScienceFiction Adventure

In my stories set in the Grand Masters’ Universe, the portal web allows instant travel between distant planets. Young empath, Violet Hunter, and her Grand Master, Athanor Griffin, have adventures on various planets with distinctive lifeforms, while pursuing the evil Grand Masters who are conspired to destroy galactic civilization. The stories have several bizarre lifeforms, such as the flower-like Wistralians, stinky giant amoeboids, and the reptilian dragons of Sythos.
The portals are based on a current physics theory to explain quantum effects:http://phys.org/news/2014-10-interacting-worlds-theory-scientists-interaction.htmlThe universe we experience is just one of a gigantic number of worlds. Some are almost identical to ours while most are very different. All of these worlds are equally real, exist continuously through time, and possess precisely defined properties. All quantum phenomena arise from a universal force of repulsion between 'nearby' (i.e. similar) worlds which tends to make them more dissimilar.Albert Einstein famously described quantum entanglement as "spooky action at a distance" because it seems so improbable that what happens to one particle in an entangled pair also happens instantly to the other particle, even over great distances. The phenomenon exceeds the speed of light. Read more at: http://phys.org/news/2015-06-method-q...
The teleportals in the Grand Masters’ Universe enable galactic travel, commerce and communication between planets.

Grand Master’s MateYoung empath, Violet Hunter, and her crafty Grand Master, Athanor Griffin, tackle the villains threatening civilization. Their worst enemy, the Red Queen, rampages across the galaxy evading capture, while blocked portals restrict normal commerce among planets. Compounding their problems, half the Grand Masters on the Council fear Violet is the agent of their doom as her father foretold, and vow to eliminate her. To restore peace, Violet and Athanor embark on a dangerous quest for a weapon hidden by the ancient psychic masters on one of four planets. But, the weapon proves elusive, the ancient sites harbor hazards, and new alliances forged with bizarre entities may not be sufficient to foil their enemies and save the galaxy.

#ScienceFiction Snippet 2: attack on Illoris from Grand Master's Mate for #WeWriWa

Today, I’ll continue the snippet from Grand Master’s Mate. Violet and Athanor are visiting their friend, the Black Dragon, Ythris, on the Planet of Sythos, when the Moon is attacked. Note, the Brululians resemble man-sized lobsters and walliths are reptilian aliens.
You can read last week’s snippet here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
Emerging under the dome of the portal station on the Moon Illoris, Violet blinked at the confused melee of the attack. Giant amoeboids rolled over the rocky surface like gobs of gel. One wallith thrashed on the ground, leaking blue blood from its ripped limbs. The second wallith tore pieces from a pale green blob.
Seltos was nowhere in sight. Violet guessed he had scouted the moon and already returned to report to the Black Dragon.
The Brululian Warden reared in front of its cabin in a valiant attempt to protect its babies. Gulpah’s shell was coated in green slime and two of its thin limbs had snapped at the joints and hung useless. Undeterred by the wounds, Gulpah’s large foreclaw pinched into the squirming gel of its assailant.

Dale has kindly agreed to answer some questions about her writing and life.
Why did you write your book (or series)?
I decided to join NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2007 and I thought, to get into the spirit of Nano, I wouldn’t even try to think of a story idea before November 1. So Nov 1 came and I was sitting at the breakfast table trying to think of a story. I had nothing—zilch. I told my husband I couldn’t come up with a story idea so he told me about his weird dream he had the night before. The dream was about a wall of doors and people would enter one and exit another some distance away. I can’t remember the rest of his dream, but that small snippet was enough to get me started thinking. I went to my dungeon and through that November, I wrote Beyond the Wall, which is now The Inner Realm.
The dungeon. The light is a witch’s broom.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve imagined being whisked away to other worlds since I was little but I never thought to put my imaginings down on paper until I started writing songs in the early 1990’s. My ballads grew into whole stories and I loved writing them so much, I began taking writing courses—lots of writing courses.
What do you find are the best and worst parts of being an indie author?
The best? I love having full control over every aspect of writing and publishing. I write what I want when I want and can publish what I want when I want.
The worst? I hate having full control over everything. It’s scary. Is the story good enough? How can I improve? Where can I steal money for editing and covers etc?
Do you have any pets at home?
We have Zeus, a tailless (born that way) three-legged dingo/cattle cross. He chased a train and caught it, but, as I’ve said before, it was understandable because it was a cattle train.
Zeus loves his chook friends.

And Georgie, a little foxy that my husband and son found nearly dying of thirst in the bush. We tried to find her owners but couldn’t so she, and her forever shedding coat, lives with us now.
Naughty Georgie digging a hole.

The dogs fell in love at first sight and live happily together with our five chooks… um, chickens without so much as an argument.
What interesting aspect of your life would surprise your readers?
This isn’t really about me but I wish it was me. There’s a saying when someone doesn’t close a door. “Were you born in a tent!?” Well, my brother can honestly say yes to that. He was born in a tent on Hollaways Beach in Far North Queensland. Yeah, he could always leave doors open and never get in trouble for it. However, I was born in Cairns Hospital. J
Hollaways Beach. (www.tripadvisor.com.au)

What are your current projects and plans for the future?
I’m really excited about three projects I’m doing at the moment. A YA Science Fiction adventure that I hope will be good enough to enter into Kindle Scout, an adult Science Fiction series, and a zombie series. The zombie series has developed from a first draft I wrote during one of those writing courses I spoke of earlier. Yep, they should keep me busy for a while.

SRF Brigade Showcase - Grand Master's Mate

I am thrilled to announce that I have completed the Grand Master’s Trilogy. Today, I’ll showcase a longer excerpt from Book 3, Grand Master’s Mate. Book 1 is on sale for 99c. Buy links are at the end of the post.
Excerpt from Book 3, Grand Master’s Mate:
A small brown dragon popped into view, flying in midair towards Ythris. “Attack on Illoris!” it croaked. Silence fell within the great hall. Acting fast, Ythris ordered, “Seltos, peep at the portal station.” The copper dragon vanished. “My children!” Gullish wailed, clutching at the nearest little Brululians. “We’ll get them,” Athanor grated, leaving Violet momentarily uncertain whether he meant the attackers or the Brululians on the moon. “Both,” he sent, grabbing her arm. The rock walled hall disappeared as they spun into the void. “You retrieve the Brululians and I’ll hold off the attackers,” Athanor’s command winged to Violet. Athanor shoved Violet towards the cabin. He stood tall, blasting blue psi beams into the attackers. Dodging past the struggling Gulpah and his opponent, Violet dashed inside the cabin and swept the three little Brululians into her arms. She peered outside. Leaping to Violet’s side, Athanor caught her arm and barked, “I’ll port you to safety.” She grabbed one of the middle limbs of Gulpah and psi surged, flipping Violet and the Brululians into the void. The great hall of the eyrie appeared around them. Violet released her grip on the Brululians and the shelly little creatures raced to the arms of Gullish and their siblings. She bent over the Brululian to examine his injuries. Gulpah panted, “My children are safe. I can grow another leg.” Placing her hands on his shell, Violet poured healing empathy into the Warden. Reaching a clawed forelimb to the wounded Brululian, Istrelle sang, “Let me aid our brave Warden Gulpah. Save energy for your Griffin.” Stepping aside, Violet sensed the silver dragoness radiate her despised empathy to ease the Brululian’s pain. Her Griffin, Athanor, had remained on Illoris to deal with the invaders. Shutting her eyes, Violet focused on their resonating crystals and saw through the amethyst he wore. Many transparent amoeboids oozed out of the portal. The coppery Seltos swooped back and forth, ripping into the enemy with his sharp claws. Athanor blasted holes in their membranes; they shriveled and died. More poured through the portal and filled the portal station with their pulsing bodies. One pushed a metal box and cracked open the lid. Gray smoke billowed from the box. “Port out!” Violet’s thought arrowed to Athanor. “Hades!” Athanor groaned. Their link snapped. Violet swung to Ythris and cried, “Athanor’s in trouble!”

A dark form, like the elongated figure of a man, clambered over the arched entrance to the church. The whole snippet can be read here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
“I’ll go for help,” Estelle said. She had get out of sight and switch to Super Starrella. Estelle sprinted around the corner and dived into the shadows. “Rockette!” she sent the mental summons. Running her fingers along the label of her costume, she changed the nanofabric to the invisible setting and rolled the mask over her head. She raced back to the church where the creature still clung on the wall like an ugly ornament. Starrella looked around. Where was Rockette? She couldn’t climb a vertical wall after that weird creature; she would have to ride on the winged mare. “I’m here. Standing right next to you,” Rockette whinnied in her head. “Shucks, these invisible costumes are great; I can’t even see myself.” Revolving in a semi-circle, Estelle touched a warm neck and ran her fingers down the mare’s body to the saddle. She pulled herself onto the broad back and scrambled into the saddle. “Let’s fly!” I am happy to announce I have completed the Grand Master’s Trilogy. It is the longest series I have written to date. Young empath, Violet Hunter, and her cunning Grand Master, Athanor Griffin, tackle the villains threatening civilization.
Their worst enemy, the Red Queen, rampages across the galaxy evading capture, while blocked portals restrict normal commerce among planets. Adding to their problems, half the Grand Masters on the Council fear Violet is the agent of their destruction as prophesied by her father. Yet, the weapon proves elusive, and forging new alliances with bizarre lifeforms may not help Violet to save the galaxy and achieve her true destiny.

Book 3 of the Grand Master's Trilogy will be released on 9th December.

Read a long excerpt here:
The doors swung open and they stepped into the light-filled atrium of the Center for Life Science. The wedding audience sat in rows of chairs on either side of the aisle. The gray uniforms of Space Corps were visible among the wedding guests.
Pausing inside the door, Violet scanned the atrium for familiar faces. Her pawn friends, Srini and Lira sat together in one row. Professor Gullish scurried down the aisle and crouched awkwardly in a seat on the opposite side. The Brululian had difficulty fitting his fan shaped tail in the chairs intended for human anatomy.
Leading Athanor to the seats, Violet joined Lira and Srini. Athanor collared the seat at the end of the row, stretching his long legs down the aisle. Violet grinned at her friends. She had not seen them for several weeks, well before the battle with Morrigu on Haven.
Lira patted Violet’s forearm with her soft furry fingers in the Aman-ellan greeting. She mewed, “You were away for ages, Violet. Kondric told us you were staying on Avalon.”
Srini had a strained look on his dark face and his voice had lost its normal cheeriness. “I’m glad to see you’re both recovered after the battle.” Compressing his lips, he asked, “Do you know what happened to my Grand Master Hanuman? I haven’t heard from him since our expedition to guard the black barrier on the Planet of Destiny.” He tiled his head and his black eyes pleaded for a positive response.
Violet explained, “Hanuman survived the battle on Haven. But, he was grievously injured and lost his psi powers. We have not heard from him since then. My Grand Master was weak for days, and we couldn’t travel until he regained his powers.”
Shaking his head in disappointment, Srini sighed, “I wish I could visit my Grand Master. He was always kind to me and we had great conversations on my missions. Will I ever see him again?”
“It may be possible to arrange a visit,” Athanor growled. “Without his psi power, Hanuman cannot easily make contact with you through your pawn’s collar.”
“Hush!” Violet whispered. “The ceremony is beginning.”
The band played the wedding march and the bride, groom and ritual mediator entered. They walked in a solemn procession to the center of the atrium.
Tessa Brown and Phineas Wilmot stood a pace apart, smiling at each other. Professor Wilmot wore a straw colored suit matching his hair and mustache. He looked nervous. The bride was the star of the party. Her white lace gown with gold trim highlighted her delicate complexion and golden tresses. Joy illuminated her beautiful face.
Feeling a twinge of envy, Violet tightened her lips and lowered her gaze to the floor.
Squeezing her hand, Athanor sent, “I desire no other woman. Where else could I find a loyal companion who enjoys my psi power? You have expressive green eyes and a beautiful psychic aura.”
“Thank you.” Violet smiled and glanced up at his plain Taranis face.
The Director of the Center for Life Science opened the ceremony. He had taught biology to Tessa and Violet in their first year at the Academy. His slow, sonorous voice tended to send his listeners to sleep and today was no exception. He began with a long winded introduction to the bride and groom and their excellent qualities.
Bored by the lecture, Athanor leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. In contrast, Violet’s green eyes gleamed with delight as she gazed at the wedding couple. She had never attended a marriage rite and Tessa was her special friend. Concealing her thoughts from Athanor, Violet suppressed her worries. How could she ever get married when she loved a Grand Master? Lira purred beside her, untroubled by the shadows of the Grand Masters.
While she watched the ceremony, Violet kept her senses tuned to Athanor. She feared he would fall asleep and inadvertently expose everyone to his raw power when he woke. His mind hazed and she sent him a mental pinch.
Suppressing a yawn, he sent unconvincingly, “I’m awake.” His thoughts sharpened and he griped, “Next time, remind me not to accept an invitation to a wedding.”
“You weren’t invited,” she snickered mentally and squeezed his hand. He groaned under his breath.
After the Director finished his introduction, the wedding rite was short and simple. The mediator offered a blessing and Phineas slid the ring over Tessa’s slender finger. Violet’s eyes misted, anticipating their happiness.
Boom!
A red explosion shattered the glass panes in the curved wall of the atrium. Screams mingled with the tinkle of glass shards on the stone-tiled floor. Menacing psi pressure vibrated around the room.
Eyes flaring ruby light, Morrigu dropped into the central space. Her long blonde braids and four red arms were a nightmarish hybrid of Celtic and Hindu myths.
Tessa crumpled in a dead faint. Phineas caught her in his arms and backed away from the horrid scarlet beams of the Red Queen. She had violated the critical ban against exposing normal people to her raw psi energy.
Violet swept her gaze around the atrium, startled by the devastating effects of Morrigu’s raw power. Half of the wedding guests had collapsed in psychic trauma and the rest were rigid with shock. His face blanched, Srini clutched at the back of the chair in front of him. As Violet watched, his eyes shut and he slid to the floor. Ears flattened and trembling, Lira bared sharp teeth and spat at the terrible apparition. The shelly carapace of Professor Gullish sprawled on the floor, thin legs twitching in the air and pink underbelly exposed.
Crackling with blue psi, Athanor leaped to his feet and raised his arms high above his head. Psi flared. Sheets of blue light rippled around the terrified wedding party, creating a protective enclosure. Shedding his public disguise, his black locks tumbled to his shoulders and his right eye blazed with blue light.
His mind merged with Violet’s and he griped, “She looks more devilish than ever.”
“Let me help.” Pressing her hand on his shoulder, Violet augmented his energy. Athanor concentrated on protecting the innocent attendees of the ceremony from Morrigu. He couldn’t easily attack Morrigu at the same time.
Athanor commented to Violet, “Her fourth arm’s a fake. You severed it in the battle and she cannot generate a new one.”
Swinging towards Athanor, Morrigu yelled, “Griffin, you voidal, half-blind fool, defending the unpowered norms. By Ragnar’s fire, I’ll blast your remaining eye and slaughter your puny pawn.”
A tsunami of red psi energy smashed against Athanor.
His hatred congealing into icy steel, Athanor stood firm, holding the psychic screen over the wedding attendees. Grimacing in fury, the Red Queen zapped red rays at Athanor, again and again. Her attacks were futile. She was unable to penetrate his shield, strengthened by his link with Violet. Ruby lasers reflected from the blue envelope around Athanor and the people he shielded.
An impasse.
Morrigu roared in frustration.
Raising her red arms to the ceiling, Morrigu blasted the intact windows. Glass panes crashed down and Athanor solidified his screen over the helpless people. The roof trusses creaked and snapped, tumbling onto the blue bubble of Athanor’s shield. Pumping energy into the defensive screen, he had little for a thrust at their devilish red attacker.
Steeling to enter the combat, Violet called to Athanor, “Fetch my sword. I’ll divert her attention.” Sensing him teleport the Sword of Tyr, she opened her hand to clasp the hilt. Purple fire swept from the pommel to the tip of the blade. Jumping out of Athanor’s protective balloon, Violet pointed the sword at the Red Queen.
Fierce hatred beat into her mind and Violet staggered under the impact of Morrigu’s fury. Firming her mental shield, she took a step forward and thrust the blade at the Red Queen. A psi stroke drove her back, her legs slammed into a chair and she fell. Holding the sword upright in one hand, Violet twisted aside and landed on the flattened palm of her other hand. She bounced back onto her feet, facing her adversary. Morrigu’s next blast of psi pressure knocked Violet to her knees.
Athanor speared blue psi at their enemy. Whirling to face his threat, Morrigu flung a curtain of red psi to block the blue ray. The two Grand Masters were matched in strength, but Athanor was expending his energy to protect the unpowered people.
Shaken and helpless, Violet bit her lip. Who would weaken first?

#ScienceFiction Snippet for #WeWriWa - Battle with Wasp Spiders

Today, I’ll continue the aftermath of the wasp-spider attack on Moon Station from Grand Master’s Game. Last week’s snippet can be read here –http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/20...
“Her pawn’s collar stopped the jaws from closing,” Athanor grated. The Grand Master clambered to his feet and retrieved his dagger from the punctured eye of their attacker. He lent his hand to help Violet scramble up. She hung shakily to his arm and looked around. Six bulky yellow-striped bodies lay on the floor, their legs still twitching. A tall woman in a survival suit stood two paces away; her open faceplate showed the white skin and dark goggles of an albino. Two men in combat gear moved from body to body, aiming heavy duty lasers in case an insect revived. One workman had defended himself with the toolbox and screwdriver he brandished. The second workman lay on the ground, blood pumping from his neck where the mandibles had cut through the tough suit. Sickened by the gory sight, Violet turned away.

#Supergirl Snippet for #SFFSat

A scream echoed from the stone walls and Estelle ran toward the noise. She stopped at the intersection, recognizing the couple at the corner. Professor Philpot was attempting to pacify the screamer, Betty, the young woman who had been scared to go out after dark. Professor Philpot spotted Estelle. His voice was apologetic, “I offered to escort Betty through the streets. She’s upset because she thinks she saw a movement in the shadow.” “I did see a shape climbing up the wall. Right up a vertical wall,” Betty’s voice was shrill with indignation. She pointed a shaking finger at the church on the opposite side of the street, “Over there.” Diane and Julian raced round the corner. “What’s going on?” Julian exclaimed. “There!” Betty’s shrill scream pierced their ears. A dark form, like the elongated figure of a man, clambered over the arched entrance to the church.
