The 7-7-7 Challenge
TAGGED! Austin Scott Collins tagged me in the #777 challenge, so here goes 7 lines from page 7 of my current work. It’s the follow-up to HELLO AMERICAN LADY CREATURE, the story of how I lost everything I thought I ever wanted, only to travel to learn (from the women of Qatar no less) that life could be very different. It’s tentatively titled, KEEPING YOUR HEART OPEN IN HELL: Inner Travels in India.
Once we were all seated he fired up a 1970s-era boombox perched on a podium at the front of the room and seated himself at its foot. The voice that poured forth was thick with India. “Vipassana meditation was rediscovered more than 2500 years ago by the Buddha,” the mysterious speaker began. You think I’d be psyched that we’re finally getting to it, but my first thought was, a tape recording? That is so tacky! And then, when do we get to the silence part? “This non-sectarian technique,” the disembodied voice boomed on, “aims for the total eradication of the mental impurities.”
