Have You Thought About Yoga Teacher Training?
According to the Wall Street Journal, teacher trainees are outpacing the growth of new students. Does this spell disaster for the industry?
I certainly never intended to become a yoga teacher. Hell, I didn’t start practicing till I was almost 40. I couldn’t keep up with my nubile classmates, let alone compete in the American marketplace. I, like the folks in this article, underwent the training to deepen my practice. I was trying to deal with the pain of a broken heart in a better way than I had in the past, and there was no denying a correlation between the introduction of the practice in my life and better approaches to dealing with things that used to baffle me.
My actual teaching got off the ground in a similarly sideways fashion. I’d been practicing at a gym and one day the teacher couldn’t make it. In desperation the fitness director asked if I could lead the class. What I discovered then, and have every time, is that I love teaching yoga.
I haven’t discovered anything new. I’m simply passing on the wisdom that’s been shown to me by my great teachers. Being a bit of a knowledge freak, I’ve gone out of my way to seek out learning and had the incredible good fortune to encounter great teachers along the way. What an honor to pass that along.
Whether you want to become a teacher or not, a huge benefit of a deep dive is the ability practice safely. You will learn your limits, and how and when to push. This is where you start in order to teach.
