Minimalism and home decor

Not everyone enjoys minimalistic décor, as some may perceive it to be barren and chilly. However, for those who vouch for minimalistic décor, it fosters a unique and unpretentious way of living. The concept of minimalism originates from traditional Japanese architecture and design, which advocates "less is more". It involves making the most of minimal resources and has gained significant global popularity among celebrities, professionals, and architects. Recently, decorators and homeowners have taken minimalism to a new level by adopting the concept of "cosy minimalism" as a theme.

There are several advantages of embracing minimalism in home decoration. Firstly, it is a cost-effective way to decorate your home. Minimalist décor promotes a serene and peaceful environment, which can help you relax and de-stress. It encourages the removal of clutter, creating an airy and spacious atmosphere. Minimalism also encourages people to make smart and long-term investments instead of indulging in frequent retail therapy. Many people are attracted to minimalism, especially young professionals who face tremendous stress at work and home. A minimalist home can provide a sense of calm and spirituality, allowing for a peaceful space to breathe and unwind. By incorporating large windows and mirrors, minimalism allows natural light to enter the space and enhance the home's overall energy. Ultimately, minimalism is an excellent way to adopt a lifestyle with fewer possessions, which aligns well with the modern-day ethos of simplification and mindfulness.

To achieve a minimalist decoration, the first step is to simplify while being effective. Instead of investing in large and bulky furniture, opt for elegant and functional pieces that match the overall aesthetic of your home. Mirrors can be used cleverly to create an illusion of more space in a room. Light colour schemes on walls can enhance the minimalist look and feel of the space. Full wall or floor-length mirrors can reflect more light, creating a brighter and more spacious atmosphere. Large wall art can also reduce clutter in a room while showing off your personality. Earthy and cream colour palettes can add an elegant touch to your rooms.

Minimalism is a new trend gaining popularity in India, with only a few minimalist homes and bungalows in major cities. However, there are some great global examples of minimalist homes, such as the Slide House in Japan by LEVEL architects, a unique and antique house that creates lifetime memories.

A couple of great examples of minimalist houses done well in India. The Minimalist Bungalow at Baroda by Atelier dnD and Isha's home in Mumbai are perfect blends of contemporary and traditional design. Isha's home features a collection of items that suit her minimalist style and add a unique charm to her house. These homes take cosy minimalism to new heights and will captivate you at first sight.

Why Vastu is important in interior design

Vastu, also known as Vastu Shastra, is a traditional Indian system of architecture and design that seeks to align buildings and structures with the natural forces of the universe. It is believed that by adhering to Vastu principles, one can create a harmonious living space that promotes health, wealth, and happiness.

The importance of Vastu in interior design lies in its ability to create a balance between the natural elements and the built environment. According to Vastu, each direction is associated with a particular element and energy. It is important to align the various elements of a building or structure with these energies to create a harmonious living space.

One of the key principles of Vastu is the concept of "purushartha," which refers to the four goals of human life: dharma (duty), artha (wealth), kama (pleasure), and moksha (liberation). Vastu seeks to align the design of a space with these goals, ensuring that the space promotes the well-being of its inhabitants.

The importance of directions as per Vastu?

One of the most important elements of Vastu is the alignment of the building with the cardinal directions. According to Vastu, the north and east are considered auspicious directions, while the south and west are considered inauspicious. Therefore, it is important to position important rooms, such as the living room and bedrooms, in the north and east, while positioning less important rooms, such as bathrooms and kitchens, in the south and west.

How important is light and ventilation as per Vastu Shastra?

Another important aspect of Vastu is the use of natural light and ventilation. Proper lighting and ventilation are essential for good health and well-being, and Vastu principles recommend positioning windows and doors to allow for optimal natural light and airflow.

What is the importance of symmetry as per Vastu?

Vastu also emphasizes the importance of symmetry and balance in interior design. Symmetrical designs are believed to promote harmony and balance, while asymmetrical designs can create disharmony and imbalance. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the furniture and decor of the space are symmetrically arranged.

What is the role of colours for Vastu compatible homes?

In addition, the use of colour is also an important aspect of Vastu. Each colour is believed to have a specific energy and it is recommended to use colours that are in harmony with the energy of the space. Warm colours, such as red and orange, are believed to promote energy and vitality, while cool colours, such as blue and green, are believed to promote calm and relaxation.

How important is placement of items and objects in interior design as per Vastu?

Vastu also recommends the use of natural materials, such as wood, stone, and clay, in interior design. These materials are believed to have grounding energy that promotes well-being and stability.

Vastu places great importance on the placement of specific objects and symbols within a space. For example, it is believed that placing a fountain in the northeast corner of a room can promote wealth and success.  Also placing crystals in the southwest corner can promote harmony and balance.

Overall, the importance of Vastu in interior design lies in its ability to create a harmonious and balanced living space that promotes health, wealth, and happiness. By aligning the design of a space with the natural elements and energies of the universe, one can create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also promotes the well-being of residents,

Bombay Club, Dhan Mill, Chattarpur

Bombay Club is located close to the Colocal Café at the Dhan Mill Compound, Chattarpur. Its ambience is soothing with lots of white. The skylights and the use of mirrors gives the place an expansive, spacious vibe. The cane furniture is right at home, and you can get seating near a power plug. Just in case you need to work with a laptop or on the phone and need the charging point.

The service is full marks at Bombay Club. Aakash, who served us, pampered us well, with each request followed. He also helped with the right recommendations and was extremely patient while we decided which food to order. The variety is wide. The management has curated the best and most famous foods from across Mumbai. Somewhat reminded me of Bombay Sandwich Company, another Mumbai food-centric eatery at Cross Point Mall, Gurgaon, which I think has shuttered down, unfortunately. Personally, I don't like the QR code menus in vogue today, so I liked it how they had put up a blackboard with the specials and a detailed paper menu for reference. Old fashioned, yes, but convenient much.

Coming back to food, the chefs at Bombay Club have not tampered a lot with the traditional Mumbai cuisine. They have instead chosen to perfect the original styles and have been quite successful in their endeavours. For example, the Sev Puri is always a delight to eat. I prefer a non spicy version and the staff got me one without the chillies.

My favourite was the Baida Roti. Stuffed with ample meat, flaky and crisp yet not a touch of oil on this fried dish. Served with mint chutney and onion salad, this one is a delight to eat. They also cook up this interesting prawn dish they call Kolmi Fry. Prawns are fit into onions and fried for that amazing crunch. The Koli masala adds a distinct flavour to this dish.

Mumbai food obviously reminds us of Parsi delicacies. One such dish on the menu at Bombay Club is the Mawa Cake. It is served with rose and pistachio ice cream.

For drinks, we enjoyed the thick classic cold coffee and the grapefruit cooler. This outlet currently does not serve alcohol. But their food could be well paired with a glass of wine or a pint of beer.

Seating tip: If weather permits, pick up a seat outside if there are just two of you. If you are going in a group, pick a large table at the back of the eatery.

PS: This outlet does levy a service charge of 10 percent.

A convenient location for laid back food and conversations. Especially if people from Gurgaon and South Delhi are looking for a mid meeting point.

How to design your balcony

Designing a balcony can be a fun and rewarding experience. Not only does it add extra living space to your home, but it also allows you to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of your own home. Here are some tips for designing a balcony that will suit your needs and style:

Determine the purpose of your balcony

Will it be used primarily for relaxing and enjoying the view, or will it also serve as an outdoor dining area or garden space? This will help you decide on the size and layout of your balcony.

design your balcony Consider the location of your balcony

Is it facing a beautiful view or a busy street? Will it get a lot of sun or be in the shade? Will it be visible from the street or hidden from view? The location of your balcony will affect the amount of privacy and natural light it receives, and should be taken into account when designing it.

Choose the right flooring

The flooring of your balcony should be durable and slip-resistant. Popular options include tile, stone, and composite decking. Be sure to choose a material that is appropriate for the climate in your area and can withstand exposure to the elements.

Add privacy

If your balcony is visible from the street or neighboring buildings, you may want to add privacy screens or railings to block the view. Privacy screens can be made of wood, metal, or glass, and can be designed to match the style of your home.

Add seating and dining areas

A comfortable seating area is a must for any balcony. Consider adding a small table and chairs for outdoor dining or a couple of lounge chairs for relaxing. If space is limited, consider a bench or built-in seating to maximize the area.

Add greenery

Adding plants and flowers to your balcony can create a sense of privacy and bring a touch of nature to your outdoor space. Consider container gardening with a variety of plants and flowers. You can also add small trees or climbing plants to add natural shade.

Add lighting

Proper lighting can help to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere on your balcony. Consider adding string lights or lanterns for a soft, ambient light, or wall-mounted lights for task lighting.

Accessorize

Add personal touches to your balcony with accessories such as throw pillows, outdoor rugs, and artwork. Consider adding a small water feature or a fire pit for a relaxing ambiance.

Safety

Be sure to check your local building codes for any safety requirements for your balcony, such as railings or guardrails.

In summary, designing a balcony can be a fun and rewarding experience. Consider the purpose, location, flooring, privacy, seating, greenery, lighting, and accessories when creating your outdoor oasis. Always comply with the safety regulations and enjoy your new cozy space.

OMO Cafe - Soul food in earthy setting

OMO at Galleria Market in Gurgaon  with an earthy and minimalist décor serves some unique vegetarian fare with interesting ingredients sourced from various parts of India. Would definitely recommend the coffee ☕ here beans for which have been sourced from Nagaland. The service is quite good with the staff patiently explaining to you the food and its ingredients in case like me, you do not get an idea about what to order.

Bright Hospitality, founded by Rajan Sethi is famous for its non vegetarian fare. Across their brands, from the now closed California Boulevard, AM PM Cafe and Bar, Ikk Punjab and GT Road they have served great meat dishes (the veg is good at their outlets but meats are legendary). I was therefore surprised to hear that Rajan and his wife Deepika had now worked up a new eatery dedicated to quality vegetarian food. My curiosity led me to this beautiful OMO Cafe for dinner with family.

The outlet is located at DLF Galleria in DLF Phase 4 Gurgaon, vertically opposite to AMPM Cafe, which belongs to the same promoter family. I have heard a lot about curated menus for Sunday brunches at OMO which they plan by sourcing unique and fresh ingredients for their patrons.

They also serve some great lentil soup, with the grains finely grinded and totally soluble in the hot 🍲 soup.

DessertsWe wanted to give the Tiramisu a try, given that their coffee tasted so good and the Ngarum Tiramisu promised some dark roast coffee in it. But it was not available and instead we tried the A true cheesecake, which was fantastic with a slight hint of olive oil in its base.

I would recommend this place as a great hangout for conversations. The ambience and food just encourages conversation and this is one of the eateries where you can sit for hours and just talk or eat in peace.

Design tips for bachelors

By Ar. Tripat Girdhar, Principal Architect & Co-founder of The Design Studio

As an architect in heart, I would like to highlight a few tips and tricks for newcomers and bachelors who would like to make their career in this field.

Sustainable in design

Living in a sustainable, mindful, and wise way has never been more significant before the pandemic hit. After the epidemic, everyone has noticed a major difference, especially with regard to recently proposed initiatives. Before the pandemic, a select few farms and well-known architects took the lead in sustainable initiatives and anticipated the future of architecture in design. To keep this in mind, we advise keeping your design sustainable and incorporating solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems into your projects. Sustainable projects are designed to peacefully coexist with nature, enabling us to live in harmony with our surroundings. They encourage a healthy, sustainable lifestyle and lessen their carbon imprint.

Trends in the eco-system

While keeping up with cutting-edge developments in the ecosystem is crucial, we advise sticking with your environmentally friendly design, which is entirely up to the architect. We would strongly advise incorporating the green building concept into all projects. A tiny effort would benefit the environment for the next generation. Buildings that are environmentally friendly and sustainable are widely trendy. By creating fewer energy-intensive structures, architects are embracing green building concepts as the global moves toward sustainable and green practises.

Technology in design

The AEC sector offers a variety of interactive advances, including construction automation, real-time simulation tools, laser scanning, photogrammetry, and VR, AR, and MR (mixed reality), which are all grouped under the general term extended reality (XR). Similar to how BIM models were seven to ten years ago, people's expectations for XR and the wide range of virtualization technologies and tools it integrates are increasing today. While technology is playing a huge role in this, people are now adopting less touch technology in their homes, offices, and in all communications.

Smart home technology

Home automation is a trend in architecture that can take many different forms, from telling Amazon's Alexa to turn out the lights to using a smartphone app to automate door locks, room temperature, and a variety of other tasks pretty much anywhere in the nation. A smart building reduces utility expenses while simultaneously giving its occupants more convenience. A social awareness of sustainability and the need to produce and consume in an ethical and responsible manner is reflected in domotic architecture.

3D Architect Design

Why shouldn't architecture be an exception to the 3D printing that is already being used for nearly everything? A growing number of architectural businesses are choosing 3D printing as their preferred method of construction. Additionally, 3D printed architecture is steadily gaining acceptance and momentum. This new style is creating a place for itself in contemporary architecture. And really, it's no surprise given all of its advantages! It's a quick, easy, and creative method that reduces the likelihood of mistakes while simultaneously managing to save time. Many tiresome processes in the construction process are eliminated and simplified by 3D printing. Even floating islands and habitats on Mars are being constructed using it!

Influences of lighting on a home's design and the inhabitant's experience

Lighting design is one of the many elements at the disposal of interior designers. People usually overlook the possibilities of lighting to enhance an environment. It can express your individuality and transform your house into a home. The effectiveness of other interior components, such as wall covering, flooring, and furnishings, will be diminished without adequate lighting. Good lighting is essential to maximise the aesthetics and efficiency of an abode.

Many different types of lights can be used in interior design. Each light has its unique shape, size, usage, price, and identity. Before we get into the details, let's understand the fundamentals. Lights can be generally classified into two categories: natural and artificial. Sunlight is considered natural light and is entirely unpredictable. Artificial lights are versatile in terms of design, intensity, colour, and, most significantly, controllability.

Interior decorative lights can be classified into four varieties -

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting is often referred to as general lighting. Ambient lighting is intended to ensure that illumination is distributed evenly across all surfaces of the space. This type of illumination allows for easy mobility around space and is suitable for everyday tasks. Recessed ceiling lights, track lights, wall lights, cove lights, or a combination of some of the above can be configured to create ambient light.

Task Lighting

Task lights aid in the completion of specific tasks. Task lights are more specific to a particular area and provide sufficient illumination for that task. An example of a task light is an under-cabinet light in a kitchen. These lights are useful for chores such as cutting and cleaning. A task light can also be a desk lamp or a nightstand.

Accent Lighting

Accent lights give a unique flair to interior lighting as they are designed to enlighten particular spaces or objects. It is commonly used to draw attention to a statement object, such as an artwork or a precious artefact.

Mood lighting

Mood lighting is installed to make the environment more appealing and to decorate a favourite nook. Mood lighting can improve one's mood after a long day by easing stress and promoting contentment. Colour-changing lights, led strips, fairy lights, and other similar products can be used to set the ambience by spreading positive sentiments through a wonderful light pattern.

Ways in which lighting can transform a space

Colour

The colour of light, or Kelvin, is a key element when deciding on the style you want to accomplish. The warmer the light colour, the lower the Kelvin, and the cooler the light colour, the higher the Kelvin. Light with a lower Kelvin value is preferable when the notion is to produce a warmer ambience. A cooler Kelvin is recommended when establishing a more brightly illuminated setting. Choose lights with a lower Kelvin value for use in houses. Lights having a higher Kelvin rating are more suited to the workplace. In addition, use a blend of different light colours based on the design's theme.

Intensity

The intensity of light is just as significant as its colour. The intensity of the light should vary based on the amount of coverage required. Too much intensity results in a place that appears overly bright and unwelcoming. This also puts strain on the eyes. The environment will appear dark and dreary if the intensity is too low.

Glare

Maintaining occupant comfort requires controlling glare. This holds for both domestic and commercial settings. Light glare is not only unpleasant, but it also strains the eyes. This could irritate and result in a bad experience.

Coherence

Interior designers take multiple factors into account when dealing with lights in addition to brightness. What is desired is a uniform distribution of brightness across all surfaces. When planning interior lighting, dark spots and shadows must be avoided. Additionally, well-lit areas are necessary for connecting one space to another.

To summarise, the lighting in your home is just as vital as the construction. Lighting options for homes are diverse and intriguing. It must be assured to create a lighting plan in the interiors throughout the design stage since this provides versatility and the best outcomes. No matter how creative your decor is, it will not succeed if the lighting is inadequate. It does make a difference in influencing the design of a home and how you perceive it.
