How are you practicing Korean? What are some of your methods, and how often do you practice?

There might be a better way to practice Korean. I'll cover in this video some of my personal tips for practicing Korean alone - without a pen pal. I'll also talk about whether you should or shouldn't be practicing Korean by yourself. Sometimes it's best not to, and I'll give reasons why.

Koreans Talk About Korea’s Work Culture

Something you'll hear a lot about if you live in Korea is the work culture. Perhaps your friends often stay out late at company dinners, drinking at multiple places until the sun comes up. Or maybe you've heard someone complain about the way their boss treats them, and being unable to do anything about it. One thing's for certain - Koreans work hard and for long hours. There are many pros and cons to working in Korea, so I wanted to know what some of the most common ones were. This year in Korea I asked Koreans on the streets what they thought about work culture, and what they would change.

Korean FAQ – 어디 있어요? vs 어디예요?

This Korean FAQ episode is for people who are high beginner or above, at least. Or for anyone who's learned that both 어디 있어요 and 어디예요 are both valid ways of asking where something is. Well, both are valid... in most cases.

Did you know there's actually a difference between using 있다 ("to exist") and 이다 ("to be") with 어디 ("where")? This is something I couldn't find explained in other videos, so I wanted to show how it works.

Speaking Korean with Other Korean Learners | A Glass with Billy

My friend Andy lives in the city of Sejong, which is near Daejeon. I meet him about once a year and he is also very interested in the Korean language and Korean education. He also speaks Korean fluently and has been learning the language for a very long time.

When I was first learning Korean, and even recently, I've felt shy or nervous to speak Korean around other people who aren't native Korean speakers, in fear of being judged for making any mistakes or because I was worried it would look like I was "showing off" by speaking Korean better than them. When I met with Andy we talked about this, as well as how to deal with those sort of feelings, and what situations it would be completely normal to speak in Korean with other non-native Korean speakers. Andy had some great insight and I'll definitely be meeting with him again next summer.

Korean FAQ – Long and Short Vowel Sounds (눈: vs 눈)

A very long time ago the Korean language had tones just like in Chinese (before 한글 became popularized). As those tones went out of the language, some parts of them stuck around - specifically vowel lengths. Some words have different vowel lengths that can change the meaning of a word. But are these important to know? Find out~!

What's the difference between 국, 탕, 찌개, and 전골? They all can translate as "soup" or "stew," but each is unique.

Asking Koreans the Best Thing About Living in Korea

I asked Koreans, "What do you think is the biggest advantage of living in Korea?” (한국에서 살 때 가장 큰 장점이 뭐라고 생각하세요?)

For me, I love the transportation whenever I'm there and the overall ease of traveling to anywhere I want in a reasonable amount of time. I also appreciate the availability of hospitals in every area. And finally I like being able to get Korean food for a fair price.

What's your opinion? If you've ever lived in Korea, what did you like best about being there?

How to Become Fluent in Korean (with Sofie)

Many people have learned Korean to a fluent level, but it's still rare. So I was thrilled when I found another person I could chat with - Sofie.

Sofie became fluent in Korean at a rapid rate, through self-studying, in just a few years. So my goal of meeting with her was to ask, "How did you become fluent?" She shared with me some of the methods she used when she was studying, and how her learning methods may be different from what others are doing (or not doing) when studying Korean. I also shared some of my own experiences learning Korean, and we talked about what it means to be "fluent" in a language.

Korean FAQ – Guys Can Have 오빠s Too?

Most people learn the words 오빠, 언니, 형, and 누나 during the low-beginner level, or even before they've begun properly learning Korean. They can be used to refer to your older siblings (older brother, older sister). However, whether you're a boy referring to your older brother or sister, or if you're a girl referring to your older brother or sister, you'll have to use a different word.

But that doesn't mean that males can't also say 오빠 and 언니, or that females can't say 형 and 누나. Never heard of this before? Find out here.

What Do Koreans Think of Foreigners Who Speak Korean?

You're studying Korean, right? What do Koreans think about you? I wanted to ask them how Koreans feel when they hear you're trying to learn their language - whether you can speak it or not.

I filmed a series of interviews this summer in Korea, and asked several questions to people. I've since been compiling them into separate videos, and there are about 2 more left for this series. Next year I'll go again and film some more. Speaking of which, is there somewhere you'd like me to go to film my next series of interviews? I've done the past 2 at 광화문 (that's why everyone's wearing 한복s), and I've done one in 홍대.
