Korean Body Language and Hand Symbols

Korean body language is something that textbooks and classes normally don't teach you as a beginner. I remember making several mistakes with body language in Korea, without even knowing what I'd done wrong until after. So I made a simple guide of some of the most common hand symbols and body language for you to memorize and practice.

Did I miss any? Which ones are you the best/worst at? Let me know~!

The Best Way to Learn Korean - Immersion | Korean FAQ

What do you think is the best way to learn Korean?

In my 13+ years of learning Korean (more if you count my previous languages), I've found - like many other people have - that immersion is the best method. However, immersion might not always be possible for most people, especially those who have busy schedules. So what can be done about that?

I talk about this topic and others in this week's Korean FAQ episode. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Let me know your opinions or experiences learning through immersion.

Learn Korean Ep. 105: “To Start” and “To Stop”

Keykat takes such a long time to get ready. I think it's because her fur takes a long time to dry out. Not to worry. We've got a quick way to help her dry off, though it does use a lot of electricity.

This episode will cover the grammar forms you'll need to say "to start" and "to stop" such as 그만, 시작하다, and others.

Remember that each "Learn Korean" episode comes with a free PDF which you can download below the video link right in this post.

Thanks for watching~!

Korean Topic, Subject, and Object Markers (은,는,이,가,을,를) | Live Class Abridged

This was one of the most requested videos I'd gotten as well as most requested live streams - more content about the markers. I know the markers have been taught to death by now (probably the most commonly taught things, after basic phrases), but there's a good reason for that. Korean markers can take a long time to master, even though they're taught from the beginning level. Because of that, I wanted to take a new approach to teaching these and try to make them a bit simpler to understand for the newbies. I hope this simpler explanation can resonate with people who might not have followed along with other previous videos about this topic.

What is 야민정음? | Korean Language Trends Ep. 2

Does anyone remember "1337?" How about "h4x0r," "pwn," or even words like "n00b?" These are all examples of what's called "leet speak" in English, and this type of writing has existed for as long as the internet's been around. Fortunately (for me being able to understand), it's only limited to the internet, but in Korea some of their "leet speak" (called 야민정음) has been getting more popular in actual spoken Korean, so I wanted to make this video to show some of those examples.

Although it's not likely you'd ever encounter someone speaking "8kㅗㅜㅏ" to mean "양파" (take a moment to figure that one out... it gave me a headache), you might come across people using 롬곡, 커엽다, 댕댕이, and many others these days. Here's a video explaining this recent phenomenon called 야민정음.

How to Make Your Korean Name | Korean FAQ

"Can you help me make a Korean name" is one of the most common questions I get asked online, and I wanted to explain the process behind what goes into making a name. It's not as simple as you might think, but with a bit of time (and research) you can create your own Korean name that matches your own language.

If you make a Korean name using the methods here, let me know in the comments

밑 vs 아래? What's the Difference? | Korean FAQ

Now here's a topic that even Koreans have difficulty understanding - when to use 밑 and 아래. I couldn't find a good explanation on YouTube already for these two words, so I wanted to explain them myself in simple terms. The problem is that many times these two words can seem to overlap in meaning, which can cause confusion. In addition, sometimes one or the other word will feel more "right" than the other in a sentence, and most Koreans are unable to explain why. Hopefully this helps to clear up the confusion a bit. Still, these two words are a bit tricky, so instead of thinking about which one is right and wrong, try to imagine what the words themselves mean and see if it would fit with your sentence - if it does, then use it without worrying about it being better or not.

Korean Politeness Levels (반말, 존댓말, 높임말) | Live Class Abridged

This is a shorter version of a much longer live stream explaining politeness levels. Although not everything taught in the live stream is present here (for time), it's still an overview of the bulk of what was gone over. Let me know if I missed anything!

How Much Korean Can You Learn in One Hour? | Tutoring My Brother

How much Korean could you learn in an hour? The alphabet? Phrases? Anything more? I wanted to find out, and my little brother volunteered to be my student for a day as I tried to teach him as much as I could within only a single hour.

How did he do?

Action Verbs to Adjectives (~는) | Live Class Abridged

This is the abridged version of the live class covering how to change action verbs to adjectives. The original stream was over 2 hours long, but this condensed version is just 10 minutes. Hopefully these videos help for doing quick reviews of a topic we covered during class, with less of an investment of your time.
