How to Learn Korean with K-Pop (and Korean Music)

These days, more and more people around the world have started learning Korean.

Why? There are many reasons. One of the most common reasons I hear is that they started learning Korean after becoming interested in K-Pop and Korean music. Personally, I'm super excited that so many more people are starting to learn Korean and becoming interested in Korea.

No matter your reason for learning Korean, I want to support you in your journey. So I created this video as a guide for learning Korean through K-Pop. While I don't think that K-Pop is the best way to learn Korean, I also don't think it's useless either. There are ways to benefit from using Korean music when studying, which I'll talk about in this video.

Here's the English translation:

Then next I’ll explain about this piece. This work was donated anonymously in 2010 and appears to be from the late Joseon Dynasty, but unfortunately it is unknown who the author is. But they used various colors and natural paints and ink, and this is a picture’s whose literary value is recognized by its remarkable depiction that reflects its generation’s historical figures. Next I will explain about this pottery here.

Korean Phrases Ep. 58: 36계 줄행랑

This is one of my favorite Korean idioms, although I rarely use it or encounter it.

However, the story of this phrase is really interesting, and I was able to learn more about its history while creating this video.

North Korean vs South Korean Dialects

Have you ever wondered why North Korean news announcers seem to talk so differently than South Koreans?

Do you want to know how North Korean and South Korean dialects are different?

Ever since my last dialect video I made in 2016, I've wanted to tackle the topic of North Korean dialects. But it's just such a large topic, and it's difficult to find information besides vocabulary words and a plethora of North Korean TV dramas.

So over the past year or so I've been collecting North Korean language resources (textbooks, grammar explanations, vocabulary, phrases, intonation samples, and more) to compile a long list of differences and unique points about North Korean dialect to create a video. Finally this January I started putting those items together and shortening the list into what might be an easy-to-digest and watchable video... and here it is!

Let me know your feedback on this new video. I'd like to be able to make more dialect-related videos in the future as well.

Korean Language Exchange PROBLEMS | Tips for Language Exchange

3 Reasons to Avoid Romanization When Learning Korean

Are you learning Korean solely through romanization?

What is romanization? Romanization is writing the Korean alphabet (한글) using English letters. For example, you might write 한글 as "hangul," "han-kul," or a variety of other ways depending on the romanization system. Some resources include romanization as a reference to check that you're pronouncing something correctly, but many learners mistakenly use romanization without ever using the actual alphabet. This can be detrimental to progress in the language, and I wanted to talk about why it can be so harmful through this video.

Learn Korean Ep. 100: ~하고 있다 vs. ~해 있다 (Verb States)

I can't believe there have been 100 "Learn Korean" episodes! It's time to celebrate! Let's make a cake or something. This is a really big event, and I should celebrate it together with Keykat.

This week's lesson will contrast the two forms ~하고 있다 and ~해 있다. We've previously learned about the ~하고 있다 form (also called the Progressive Tense), but it looks a bit similar to the ~해 있다 form. When is one used and when is the other used? What are their differences? We'll talk about all of this and more in this episode.

This is something really important to me, and something that I've never shared with you before.

I usually don't talk about my personal life more than necessary, but in this case I think it's important. I wanted to share with you how Korean has really influenced and changed my life. It's affected me in some really big ways, and that includes in my personal life.

Many people have asked me how learning Korean has changed my life, and I felt that just saying "it's helped me get a few jobs and make friends" is only half of the true story. So today I'm going to share with you the entire story.

Korean Phrases Ep. 57: 이심전심

This week's new video is another "Korean Phrases" episode. This series is for learning quick idioms and phrases in Korean. So they're useful to know, especially if you're at an intermediate or advanced Korean level.
