Horror that Inspired me Part One

Since it’s the month of Halloween, I am starting a limited series of some of the horror movies that inspired my writing. This month I do part one.

The Stand. The book and the original series. I love the idea of factions of good and evil. The young and the foolish (David and Seth in my books) and the old and wise (Mae in my books). Also of course, a supernatural/apocalyptic event that causes most of the world to perish and people banding together to start anew which is the foundation of my series.

Dawn of the Dead (remake)- I love a good ensemble cast with all sorts of personalities (good and bad) which you see in my Paranormal World series. Also, again with have an event that forces people to band together, another theme I love.

Bram Stroker’s Dracula– It’s a horror movie but it’s also a love story and you don’t see a lot of that theme in horror. I’m a sucker for a love story even if the male lead is questionable (like maybe Phillip? or Joo-won? in my books)

NEW BOOK REVEAL!

Before I take a mini break, I’ve just finished writing the standalone book, Lightning and Curses. This is the start to a new series of paranormal romance books with a new heroine in each book. The first is all about Lisa, our faerie from Mystic Realms. Here is the cover and the blurb. The book will drop December 14th but if you get the ebook now, it’s only 99 cents. The price will gradually go up closer to the release date!

Here’s the link to buy!

Lisa Xu here, faerie extraordinaire, or so they tell me. I didn’t let living in a post-apocalyptic world stop me from reaching my dreams and opening up my own clothing store but it didn’t come easy. I survived numerous heartbreaks, getting almost eaten alive by various supernatural beings, and I’m an uber-reluctant member of a superhero team.

But of course, a girl can’t catch a break for long in a supernatural world. Time is running out on a promise I made to the powerful and very sexy elven king, Joo-won. If I don’t find a way to break his curse, he’ll eat me. Seriously.

With the clock running, my search is serious, but of course nothing is simple in a supernatural world. I’ve got to find the “wicked witch” who cursed Joo-won, and fight off nightmarish creatures that could be tied to a murderous ghoul, an ex-lover from Joo-won’s criminal past, or something more unknown.

This is seriously getting in the way of me building my fashion empire.

Hope I don’t get killed before I make it big.

Books, Books, and more Books!

Till next time!

August Newsletter: A Contest and Updates!

As we reach the Sunday of Summer, I’m also reaching my hiatus phase. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have fun things to share.

New Book Update

I just finished the first draft of Lightning and Curses, the sequel to Mystic Realms. And I’ll be releasing the cover soon! Lightning is a standalone story in my new Paranormal Lands series where each book is self-contained.

Here is a very rough summary of this stand alone and a teaser of the cover:

Lisa Xu here, faerie extraordinaire. I didn’t let living in a post-apocalyptic world stop me from reaching my dreams and opening up my own fashion line but it didn’t come easy.

If I don’t find a way to break his curse, I’ve got to give him one of my organs to eat and I’m so not feeling that option.

With the clock running, my search gets serious but of course nothing is simple in a supernatural world. As I look for a cure, I must find the wicked witch who cursed Joo-won. I also have to fight off mysterious creatures that are the stuff of nightmares and might be tied to a murderous ghoul, an elf from Joo-won’s past or something more unknown.

Contest Time

Did you know that Mystic Journeys is now out on audibles? To celebrate my second audiobook, I have a contest! Enter in numerous ways for a chance to WIN the audiobook AND one of my ebooks of YOUR CHOICE.

July Newsletter: It’s Here!

Some time ago, I asked readers which character they wanted to read more about after the conclusion of the Soulmate Saga with Amina. The dark faerie/demon with amnesia, Francesca “Fran” Ross, won! So today, I finally release her story and the sequel to Mystic Memories. Dark Hauntings starts the Paranormal Times trilogy. I did not originally go into this thinking she’d get her own full series but, as with most writers, my mind started doing its thing and the story got bigger!

Fran is searching for a way to get her stolen memories back, finding herself working for the angels who took them to solve a grisly mystery, vying for a thrown in a fae court and being stalked by all manner of demons, some who may have a clue of who she really is. Then there is her romance with the half angel/half demon Felix Gonzalez who has a host of issues himself, including a past that is going to come to haunt him.

If you haven’t snagged a copy, today is the LAST day to get the ebook for just 99 CENTS!

And to tempt you, here are a few teasers to peak your curiosity.

So what’s next? I’m 2/3 in to writing Lisa’s stand alone story that will lead to a new fae/elf focused standalone series later (with each book being self contained with new characters).

Author Spotlights With evil rising, every secret can change the course of history. The curse is broken. The Fae are free. But something is changing within Gandrett, and there is no denying that eventually, it may cost her everything. Retaliation is the name of the game, and no one is safe.
How do I juggle the most possessive, over-protective bastard in The Rift with all of my current mates and lovers?
What revenge will the Coyote Den take for my betrayal?
I’m not even sure if I’ll survive to attend Rafe’s birthday bash.  When power beckons, anyone can answer. Let the call of magic charm you!
Curses and hexes haunt the worlds of the witches, werewolves, dragons, vampires and the hunters who stalk them in the night.Books Fair!

June Newsletter: New Anthology, Giveaways and More

HI Readers, ready for the start of summer? Hope you are able to enjoy your June while I go on the run from all these cicadas flying through the air. Yuck.

This month so much is happening!

First June 22nd is the release of my YA Fantasy short story anthology I co-authored. It’s available now for pre-order on Amazon.

Also, in celebration of the release, we have a fun giveaway. Click here to enter.

Finally, on June 22nd the writers will be having a Take Over of our group Diverse Books with Magic. It’ll be games, prizes and more information about the anthology writers! Click picture for more information.

Coming up!

Next Month I release Dark Hauntings. The Sequel to Mystic Memories and I need ARC readers! Please message me if you can read in advance for a review on Amazon and Goodreads for the July 20th release.

In a post-apocalyptic world full of monsters and demons, living without a memory is a dangerous thing.

Hi, my name is Francesca Ross and my life sucks right now. I’m a faerie who doesn’t remember her life beyond five years ago. I used to be a top-ranking warrior faerie but now I’ve become a homeless, unemployed loser with no plans for the future. I was supposed to be a big-time faerie queen with my own unseelie court by now. However, my approval ratings in the fae world aren’t the greatest due to some past infighting, so I’m forced to agree to a ‘special arrangement’ with a popular faerie if I want any chance at winning the throne.

When I get an offer from an arch angel to investigate angel disappearances in a small vacation town in exchange for help recovering my lost memories, I can’t say no. I need all the help I can get. Also, I could use a little vacation from doing nothing. I enlist the help of my friend who I may or may not have had a romance with in my past, half angel/half demon, Felix Gonzalez, along with a not so angelic guardian angel and a temperamental succubus. But of course, nothing is as easy as the deceiving angels explained. Now I’m stuck in a town with a mystery more gruesome than I could have imagined and I’m being stalked by several demonic forces, one of whom could have the answers to my hidden past.

Can I save the day, regain my memories, and win a throne? A girl can try.

Fans of Supernatural and the Kate Daniel’s series may like this new paranormal tale.

May Newsletter

Happy May and Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Month!

This month I discuss my favorite anime inspiration for my books and upcoming book progress!

You may know that I am a HUGE anime fan so of course I get inspiration from them. So I’m sharing just some of my favorite anime that has inspired me. It was hard to narrow it down to just five so I’ll have to do another post or more!

Bleach– This anime inspired me with the dynamics of the societies, friendships and sophisticated villains. Several of my characters were inspired from this anime. Charles, Gedeyon, Faith, Blake, Shayla and Ed. Find it on Netflix and Hulu. And a series reboot is coming out!

Kamisama Kiss– Love the trope of the woman softening a bad boy’s heart. At the basic level that is what this is and inspired, in part, my character Joo-won. Find it on Hulu and Funimation.

Attack on Titan– This one is just darn good story telling and the energy they put into the arcs of the characters, especially the main one, Eren, was impressive. You may not like Eren at the start but what they do with his character is intense. I’m inspired by how they make characters, even villains, so multi dimensional. Find it on Cartoon Network, Hulu, Funimation and Crunchyroll.

Norigami– This is another good one that does well with friendship, redemption, and team dynamics and I really like the anti hero vibe. Find it on Hulu and Funimation

Devil is a Part-Timer– Another good anti hero one and its more light hearted dealing again with friendship (sensing a pattern here? I Iike my diverse assemble casts as you can tell from my books). Find it on Hulu and a sequel is coming!

My Progress

This summer is a busy month.

Boxset

June 1st I will drop a new boxset for my Paranormal World series, which will have all four books in the series. Available for pre-order now.

Anthology

As a reminder, I’m a part of a diverse YA/NA fantasy short story anthology and it releases June 22nd, available for pre-order now.

Find your might. Discover your magic.

A disabled teen tracks down an elusive sea beast. A young, Indian detective finds a magical artifact. A Black teen who can see the dead solves a murder mystery. An Ethiopian girl discovers magical secrets when she is kidnapped by her teacher. A teen survivor of a deadly plague realizes she and her robot companion are not alone.

Across realms, worlds, and dimensions we bring you sixteen fantasy and/or science fiction tales that explore the tribulations of growing up. Full of diverse characters and #ownvoices authors, the protagonists in these coming-of-age YA adventures will not only discover powerful magic but discover themselves along the way. Don’t miss this magical collection of stories about witches, fae, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, jinn, and more!

Dark Hauntings

I’m currently finishing the final edits before it goes to proofing and formatting but I’m hoping for the release date of July 20th. Look out for the pre-order next month!

April Newsletter: Travel, A Free Book and More

It’s April and this month’s newsletter I do a mini recap of my trip to Mexico (finally traveling again, le sigh), share a giveaway of one of my books and other deals and steals!

Ok so I was fortunate enough to get fully vaccinated for Covid-19 and for me that was a must before I took it to the streets again. And to the streets I went, by flying to Playa del Carmen with some friends for three nights. It feels so good to be able to travel again because I’m a huge traveler. I’ve been to Cabo before so this isn’t my first venture into Mexico. If you are looking for a quick getaway, Mexico is a good option.

Mexico Trip Recap

First, about travel in these Covid times. You have to keep your mask on in the airport and plane, of course. My suggestion is to eat before getting on the plane. The airline did pass out soda/water and peanuts. They no longer serve alcohol or food at this time, at least on shorter flights (mine was slightly over 3 hours). Our plane was pretty much full so don’t expect an empty plane like several months ago. In Mexico, they encourage social distancing, masks are mandatory and in many places before you can even enter you must sanitize your hands and get your temperature checked. Our shuttle to our excursion was not so stringent which I didn’t care for. Currently they are at 60% capacity in places and I didn’t do nightlife beyond dining so I couldn’t tell you what that looked like but bars were open. Note, you will need to get a Covid test within three days of returning to the US. Some hotels incorporate that option but there are places you can go in town as well (but it’s not free).

Where to Stay

We stayed at the El Taj Oceanfront Condo Resort which was AWESOME. We got a three bedroom, 2 bath place on the top floor with a full kitchen and living area and a private terrace with a jacuzzi and grill. The resort also has a beach restaurant, two pools and jacuzzi. It was a great location to town as well so we didn’t have to get a taxi during our stay to go anywhere.

Great food options to check out:

Rockas Jamaican Kitchen for THE BEST jerk chicken outside of Jamaica.

Fusion Beach Hotel Bar and Grill for good food on the beach and live music and fire show.

Aldea Corazon for a unique outdoor garden/woods environment and good food.

To do:

If you are an excursion type, there are many to choose from here and the locals will let you know. Unlike Cabo there were a ton of people trying to sell you things and it got a bit annoying but I understood the motivation was even higher since many businesses lost money due to the pandemic. If you like excitement there is parasailing, jet skiing, snorkeling, visiting ruins, zip lining or go ATVing and visit a cave with underground lakes (a cenote) like Rio Secreto.

If you like to lounge, get a massage or go for drinks on the beach or by the pool. For music/DJing with your lounging go to Kool Beach Club or Reef Rooftop.

Also, check out a tequilla tasting, go shopping or dining in the La Qunita area.

Well that’s my recap. I hope the upcoming months bring us the ability for more outings and of course safety.

March Newsletter: Cover Reveal and Book Sales

Happy Women’s History Month! This month’s newsletter is short and sweet as I share my writing process and a book sales and new books to take a look at.

My Book Updates

Right now I’m awaiting edits for my science fiction fantasy short story in the Girls of Might and Magic Anthology. This is my first effort in science fiction and it might possibly grow into its own story.

Also the audio book version of Mystic Bonds is currently with Audibles awaiting approval. Stay tuned on the release date, I’ll be sharing giveaway codes for ARCs!

I’m also awaiting beta feed back for my new spin off series, Dark Hauntings, Paranormal Times, Book One! This is a continuation of Fran’s story in Mystic Memories.

Here’s the synopsis and cover reveal!

In a post-apocalyptic world full of monsters and demons, living without a memory is a dangerous thing.

Hi, my name is Francesca Ross and my life sucks right now. I’m a faerie who doesn’t remember her life beyond five years ago. Stay tuned for the ARC requests. After that I’ll be releasing the continuation of Lisa’s story, Lightning and Curses.

February Newsletter: Black Characters in Fantasy and New Deals!

Happy Black History Month! Happy Valentine’s day! In this month’s newsletter I give a shout out to my favorite black characters in urban fantasy and sci-fi from the last year, tell you about my new anthology that you could be apart of, and spotlight new books and deals!

Feature

I’m always on the search for great black characters in fantasy. Every year I will try to present some new faces. Outside of my own characters (Amina, Fran, Jaz), I really enjoyed these black characters from last year:

Hippolyta from Lovecraft Country– She was fearless, crazy smart, and loving in this urban fantasy/horror.

Naomi Nagata from The Expanse- Another baddie with a heart and she can fix a ship! I’m really enjoying her character ARC in this smart sci-fi series.

Nora from Upload– This show sci-fi doesn’t get enough love. However, this kind, thoughtful character really has a complex love story (I won’t give it away) that you want to root for. Also her coworker (another black woman) is funny.

MM from The Boys– He’s strong, has a moral compass, and looks out for his team (I mean, he’s like the mother of the group). And I’m glad they didn’t make his character exactly like the graphic novel version.

Anansi from American Gods– I’m still extremely upset they removed his character from the show. He was needed. He was no nonsense, powerful, and spoke the truth about the plight of black people throughout time. He can really have his own show (as he had his own book spin off).

What’s New?

Well, other than my book release, Mystic Souls, which is out now and concludes the Paranormal World series, I’m also involved in an anthology. And we are looking for writers to join us in this collection of short stories focusing on diverse, young women in tales of fantasy and sci-fi. Join my new reader group for beta read opportunities and even more inside information like character takeovers, Cat’s Corner: New Adult Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance Group. Thanks!

Till next time and as always, if you’ve read my books I am always appreciative of a review on Amazon and Goodreads. I read them and they help me grow as a writer and know my audience better. Also follow me on instagram and facebook for more information.
