What’s the Rush? Part 3
The smell of chlorine was overwhelming. It stung BUDDY OWEN‘s eyes before he pulled on the sports goggles from Luen designer Marloe. It was only eight am and already he felt great. His father CHARLES ‘CHICK’ OWEN, better known as The Captain, was back in the Great States on business leaving his son with free reign in the Shady City. It was like a heavy weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
Ten lengths of the FILTON UNIVERSITY swimming pool and adrenaline was coursing through his veins. ‘Better than snorting powder,’ he thought – maybe. Filton had state of the art facilities, boasting one of the best sports science courses in the country. It was Buddy’s chosen field when he attended classes.
One of the brothers from KAPPA SO fraternity entered. He was a tall man in his mid twenties with a mane of brown hair combed into a trendy style expected of the country club sect. His name was Cooper and like Buddy he wasn’t a native of Coldford but also from the Great States. He was something of Buddy’s right hand man as far as the Kappa So brothers were concerned. As chapter leader Buddy was the man in charge. Copper kept him right.
“Bud!” he called. “Bud!”
Buddy kept swimming, tearing through the water with speed and agility. With his swim cap pulled down over his ears and the water rushing around him he didn’t hear. Cooper took one of the floating boards and threw it catching Buddy on the back of his head.
Buddy brought himself above the water. He pulled off the goggles and glared at the brother.
“What the fuck dude?”
“We need you. Hurry,” Cooper explained.
“Can’t it wait? You ruined my time. I was making great time,” Buddy complained.
“It’s a fucking reporter. You best come quick.”
‘Jesus H Christ balls,’ the chapter leader thought to himself as he swam to the edge and pulled himself out of the water.
“What do they want with me?” he asked pulling off his swim cap. Cooper had no answer.
He dried quickly and brushed his blonde hair back. He smiled into the changing room mirror. There was a ghoulish look to his eyes, a certain redness. He hadn’t snorted any lines that morning but he really could have used one then. Luckily the swim had flushed his face a little making him seem less zombie like. Pulling on a shirt and designer sweater vest he went off to meet his new reporter friend.
***
Cooper led him to the main lounge of the sports center. It was a regular hang out for Kappa So brothers, with most of them being part of a team of some kind. The intrigued reporter had been instructed to wait there.
“What do they want?” Buddy asked again as they crossed the corridor from the changing rooms.
“Wouldn’t say,” Cooper informed him.
Buddy rolled his eyes. “Probably some dumb ass student from City College looking for a story on your guy here,” he decided.
“I don’t think so,” muttered Cooper but before Buddy could respond they entered the lounge to find not a student but a fresh journalism graduate.
The lounge was a finely decorated study with leather sofas, a marble fire place in the corner and portraits of leaders past looking down upon them. Large windows allowed the morning sunshine to flood in. The journalist had rust coloured hair, a long face but pretty lips. What Buddy noticed most about her was the way her well kept body curved.
“Can I help you?” he asked.
The woman pointed to the chair opposite as though he had come to her office and she wasn’t in his domain.
“Are you Bernard Owen?” she asked.
Buddy replied with a nod of his head. “Yeah.”
“I’m MADELINE LOWER of the COLDFORD DAILY,” she explained. “I wanted to ask you some questions about Kappa So.”
The adrenaline from the swim began to settle as Buddy took a seat.
“We do so much in the community. The old people, the poor people, the homeless people …” Buddy began the speech that all chapter leaders rehearsed in the event of being confronted by press.
Madeline took a recorder from a leather bag that had been left at her feet. She placed it on the table.
“Do you mind?” she asked but she had already pushed the record button.
“The boys of Kappa So are good at keeping up appearances,” she continued. “I’m here about things that go on behind closed doors. There have been hundreds of claims of sexual assaults against your brothers over the years. Many of them occurred during your tenure as chapter leader.”
Buddy kept his expression neutral. He brushed his hair back, still sticky with chlorine, and leaned forward.
“Our sisters at Kappa Sy try to warn the girls not to let themselves get carried away, get too drunk, dress too provocatively or lead the boys to the bed rooms if they don’t want the attention. It happens. New students with a first taste of independence and they get all wild and regret it.”
Madeline looked up. “Or perhaps you are blaming the victims to protect your brothers?”
The accusation came so unexpected that Buddy was briefly rendered speechless. Madeline held his gaze. When he finally tried to respond she hushed him with a gesture of her hand.
“I’m not here about any of the girls as it happens. I’m here about one of your pledges. Daniel Weir. He was raped by several of your other pledges, urged on by you. A broken bottle was inserted causing some pretty serious injuries.”
Buddy frowned. “I have no idea what you are talking about.”
Madeline reached into the leather bag again and drew out some notes. She flicked through them. “Really? Because I have copies of the medical report, signed and confirmed by Dr Lee at General. It seems one of your brothers did a piss poor job of patching him up. A bottle? Really?”
Buddy smiled this time.
“I still have no idea what your talking about,” he maintained. “Who the fuck would do something like that?”
Madeline noticed his composure was beginning to fall. “You for one,” she pointed out. “Daniel quoted you as saying, ‘he’s going to be shitting blood for days.’ Are you suggesting that was fabricated?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying,” Buddy groaned. “That turd Weir just has something against me. I can’t help if he’s into some kinky shit.”
Madeline raised her eyebrows. “So you were there?”
“No!” Buddy insisted. “I don’t …”
Madeline took her chances whilst she had control of the interview. “Tell me Mr Owen are you a homophobe or are you just a sadistic monster?”
He became frustrated. He snatched up the recorder and switched it off.
“Listen up bitch and listen good. I own your news paper and I’ll have you out of a job by the end of the day if you carry on with this bull,” he snarled.
Madeline snatched her recorder back but kept it switched off.
“Actually the Daily is owned by your father, not you. I’m sure he is shrewd enough to know that if he has me fired it won’t be long before one of the many rivals in the city scoop up the story instead.”
“Get the fuck outta ma lounge,” demanded Buddy.
Madeline stood. A satisfied grin was on her lips. She stood strong. “This lounge isn’t yours either by the way. It belongs to the university.” Buddy glared at her. “I’ll chat to some of your brothers and get back to you.”
“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!” Buddy exclaimed when he was left alone.
There was only two weeks before the Cappy returned. Something had to be done. There had to be a resolution. Never before had Buddy Owen been in more need of a line.
***
“What did you do Wendy!?” Rodney Weir balled down the phone at his wife from the HOTEL CHAIN’S main office.
“Danny was really hurt,” she sobbed. “I thought if I got the papers involved something would be done.”
“I was dealing with it,” he spat. “You dizzy cunt! You have probably ruined his life with your interfering.”
Rodney couldn’t listen to any more of her crying so he hung up.
The situation was beyond damage control. That afternoon a video had been uploaded to the internet, shared millions of times within minutes, comments from as far as the Great States. It seemed the newest star in amateur gay pornography was causing quite a stir. The video of Daniel’s rape had been cut and edited in such a way it would seem consensual, especially since the other boys were giving smiles for the camera.
At two o’clock that afternoon whilst Rodney was hosting a meeting of the board the video flashed onto his screen, cast from somewhere nearby. It was also presented on screens throughout the chain. Thousands of Weir Hotel patrons were treated to a screening of Daniel’s debut.
Before the close of business several of the Daily’s rivals in the city had ran a story on Daniel being the family shame.
SHAME ON THE CHAIN – said the Coldford Courier.
HOTELIER’S SON IN SEX TAPE SCANDAL – said City Express.
Not a single one had declared it rape. Daily stayed quiet on the subject. A simple call to editor, Eric Waddle, had taken care of that.
Just to be safe Madeline’s previous articles had been called out on as many online forums as possible for containing feminist agendas. Her credibility hung by a thread. She didn’t lose her job though. It wouldn’t be sensible to leave her with nothing. Desperate people can be dangerous. However, her assignments weren’t going to be as forthcoming in future. Buddy planned on having her report on cat shows and pissy old lady bake offs for the rest of her career.
It was all thanks to the help of Gerard ‘Jerry’ Owen, Thanks to Buddy’s favourite uncle he was able to put things right. Jerry was the youngest of the brothers so he knew what it was like to have the Captain’s shadow cast over you.
It was Buddy’s first time having to throw the Owen propaganda machine into motion. It was spoken of often but he was too young to have seen it in action before. He agreed he may have went a little over kill but he didn’t care. The reputations of those who would speak up were ruined, the hit that the hotel had taken financially would make negotiations with Rodney so much easier and to cap it all off Kappa So had waded the storm and came out the other end seeming somewhat clean. When the Captain returned from the Great States and saw how effective Buddy had been he would be proud.
By eight pm Buddy had his line to celebrate and another for good luck.
We did warn you the pledging for Kappa So was brutal. Have you checked out the rest of the story?
Daniel should never have gone to the Chapter House. His ordeal is spilling over. The Weir Hotel chain reaches far and wide. Now everyone will know what happened.

My House; My Rules
When your responsible for bringing order to a city of thieves, murderers and their like you are used to running a tight ship. For JUDGE KARYN DOLE this doesn’t stop in her court room. Her home is a place of law and order too. Her son, CAMERON, knows this well. He knows better so when he doesn’t follow the rules he has to be punished severely. As head of the LAW MAKERS, the Judge has to raise a disciplined young man.
What if the rules are so strict that no one could possible abide by them? There seems to be a fine line between parenting and dictatorship. Cameron understands. Mum is just doing what is best because nasty people like the HEADLINERS and thugs from MACK AND SONS are making the city an unsafe place to live. Even the privileged area of Kingsgate is seeing an increase in violence spilling over from the south of the city. Someone is unhappy and in this scenario mum knows best.

They were terrible to her after all. They attacked her and on more than one occasion. It’s no wonder why mum is mad. He has to be patient, even when she takes her rage out on him. He can never hit her back. What kind of person would that make him if he hit his own mother.
Anger needs to be directed where it belongs, to the KNOCK KNOCK club and the BOSS LADY herself.
Meet the rest of team Law Makers coming to Knock Knock Volume 2 this summer!

Career criminals, rapists, murders and their like quiver because after all is said and done JUSTICE will still stand, even in the Shady City.

It doesn’t matter how honourable a life you led, commit a crime in the Shady City and justice will be served.

1. The Witness (Olivia Platt)
“I’ll tell you everything.”
Again not quite a first look. We’ve met Olivia Platt before in KNOCK KNOCK Volume 1.
EPISODE 8: KIDS THESE DAYS
Where has she been all this time? What information does she have for the Law Makers?
She’s a good person so she wants to do what is right. The club manager’s wife probably should have done it sooner. She knows the Knock Knock BOSS LADY. She has interviewed her. She is up first to give some evidence.

Tabtiha warned her not to get the law involved but what choice did Olivia have? With a husband with a disgusting appetite she has to take her share of the blame. She is one of the few honest people in the Shady City but how will the scales of justice weigh against her?
With a son to protect and a past to forget, how much will Olivia be willing to give the Law Makers?
Olivia has had many victims pass through her office. Is she willing to wade through the mess to get to the truth? Their son Milo was always top priority for her and the Knock Knock club manager but he’s been absent. He has a lot to make up for.

2. The Son (Cameron Doyle)
“Mum Says no.”
First look: Cameron Doyle is a dutiful son. He’d never hit his mother what kind of person would that make him? He is also the living embodiment of the Law Makers’ power. He doesn’t even realise it.
Cam doesn’t get why everyone is upset. The KNOCK KNOCK CLUB sounds like a fun place to go but mum says no. When the shit hits the fan in the Shady City even Uncle Micky seems distracted. Cameron doesn’t want all the fuss. It’s loud and it’s frightening. How to stop it though?
“I’m so sorry mum,” Cam apologises. He didn’t realise he had done something wrong.
Physically strong, Cam can be intimidating. A show of strength is what the Law Makers need. He may be big but he never forgets who lays down the law.
Joining team LAW MAKERS is the son, Cameron Doyle. The good doctor helped him. UNCLE MICKY was always there for him. MR OWEN treats him like family.

3. The Doctor (Dr Gregory Winslow)
“Right this way, ma’am.”
Not quite a first look. He was the key to DAVID FINN’S MUSE but up next on #teamlawmakers is the city’s best general surgeon. Now he has his time in court.
His skills can’t be argued. It’s his morals that are questionable.
Winslow has some important information for the LAW MAKERS in Knock Knock Volume 2 but first he has to seek the best funding opportunities.
“I have something of interest, but I’ll be needing something in return,” he says.
The Law Makers can make a great deal especially when Winslow holds something that they want. It also happens to be a precious commodity to the Knock Knock club.
With tensions rising in the city, Winslow has a game changing card to play. Doctor/patient confidentiality is out the window when the Law Makers come calling.
He gave artist, David, a lot of inspiration himself in MUSE. Time for the doctor to make a house call at the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB.
Winslow joins THE CAPTAIN, Chick Owen and THE CANDIDATE, Micky Doyle on team Law Makers in volume 2. Coming this summer!
Hit thriller Muse featuring Winslow is available now.

4. The Candidate (Micky Doyle)
“I’ll deliver the city; You deliver the justice.”
First look at Shady City’s candidate for mayor. It’s time for a change.
Micky arrives in Volume 2 of KNOCK KNOCK to make sure order reaches every part of the city from the comfort of City Hall.
If the Knock Knock is responsible for MAYOR FELTZ going missing Micky can’t be too mad. It has left a spot open for him. Micky is ambitious, so when the door of the Mayor’s office opens he sees opportunity. Why shouldn’t he? He can play a round of politics better than most. Will he improve matters in the Shady City though?
His powerful friends need his particular charm. They need someone who can win over a whole city. Micky Doyle is the wild card of the Doyle family. He is the happy face they put on in times of trouble.
The target has been acquired. It’s now time to put the final nail in the coffin.
Micky joins CHICK OWEN, his son BUDDY and the boys of KAPPA SO on team Law Makers.

5 . The Captain (Charles ‘Chick’ Owen)
Charles ‘Chick’ Owen.
First look at the patriarch of the Owen family. They call him The Captain, Cappy among friends.
He is a true captain of industry, head of the Owen family and holder of the family skeletons. He has the money to buy just about anything. How does a whole city sound? Going cheap.
Accusations against his family left him with no choice but to react harshly.
“It doesn’t matter if he did it or not. He’s one of our own,” said Chick.
Not a shred of verifiable evidence was found. The clean up boys did a good job.
When noise from the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB starts interrupting business it’s time for Chick to flex some muscle.
If you want to know what the son is like take a look at the father. Chick is the man BUDDY calls dad.
The LAW MAKERS are set to make an impact in Volume 2 of Knock Knock. Coming this August.

What’s the Rush? part 2
The rattle of a phone on the bedside table brought BUDDY OWEN‘s headache back with thundering fury.
A bottle of MACK AND SONS lay beside the bed. Buddy reached over and finished the dregs at the bottom. He caught the phone just before it fell to the floor.
“Yeah, what?” he answered.
“Please hold for Mr Owen,” Buddy’s father’s secretary said calmly. Buddy liked her voice. It’s sultry sound made him want to ask what she was wearing. The delicious description would be satisfying. She probably looked like a syphilitic weasel in real life, he wouldn’t know, he had never actually met her. Charles ‘Chick’ Owen, better known as The Captain or Cappy to his friends had a circulation of secretaries he used. He didn’t trust anyone without his family name to be close to his business for too long.
“Yeah, whatever,” Buddy replied as he laid back and rubbed his head with his free hand. The secretary’s voices disappeared. Probably just as well. Buddy didn’t have the energy for a reach beneath the sheets anyway.
“You had be better sitting up and listening to what I have to say to you,” Chick’s harsher voice came through.
Buddy raised an eyebrow. “Good morning, dad. And how are you?” asked the Cappy’s only son.
“Don’t fucking ‘good morning’ me,” Chick spat down the phone. “Do you have any idea what I have been dealing with this morning because of you?”
Buddy wanted to say, ‘same bullshit; different day?’ but thought better of it. “How am I supposed to know? I’m just back from my morning swim.”
“Weirs,” Chick explained.
Buddy rolled over onto his side and started fumbling along the floor in search of another bottle. “You’re gonna have to be more specific.”
“He had his boy at General this morning. Stitches. He claims he was raped at the CHAPTER HOUSE and Rodney is furious. Now he’s being a pain in the ass.”
Buddy couldn’t hide his frustration. “Why should ah care?”
Chick’s voice went white hot. “Because it is your Chapter House, boy. I gave it to you in good faith. We’re looking to take over more of the Weir chain and if Rodney backs out because of what happened to his faggy son I’m holding you responsible.”
Buddy’s lip curled. “I have better things to think about than some Sissy who can’t handle a bit of heat.”
Chick was unmoved. “I’m warning you, Bud. If I have another morning like the one I’m having I’m shipping you back to your God Damned Mother! You hear me?”
“Yessir,” Buddy relented.
“Sort your shit out,” Chick barked before hanging up.
Buddy slid to a seating position at the edge of the bed. His father’s call left him annoyed and now his headache was turning into a migraine.
“Stupid fucking faggot,” he growled. “Couldn’t keep his mouth shut.”
He opened the drawer of the bedside table and retrieved a large clear bag of cocaine and a razor blade. He poured himself a generous helping and used the blade to split the powder into lines. As he leaned over to snort the first up his left nostril he felt a hand draw softly across his bare back.
“Good morning, Buddy,” greeted a soft, feminine voice. “Problems?”
“None ah ya business,” he growled.
The powder was taking effect quickly. It was easing his headache a little and giving him energy. His bed mate drew herself up and closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck and resting her chin on his shoulder.
“Cut me a line,” she requested. Her frizzy, mousey brown hair tickled his neck.
“I’m not wasting premium gear on a second rate blow job,”
The bed mate pursed her lips. “Fuck you,” she snarled.
Buddy was buzzing now. He felt invincible. “Already did that. That was second rate too,” he gave a hearty laugh.
“You’re a piece of shit,” she snarled at him.
“Get the fuck out, you skanky whore,” he replied.
The girl climbed out of the bed and retrieved her clothes from the floor in a fluster. She snarled at him again.
“Creep,” she said as she departed.
Carly – now he remembered. She was part of the university cheer leading team, or was it gymnastics? Either way she didn’t look half as bad last night when he met her as she did then. Normally he enjoyed having a coke whore to play with but that morning he had bigger fish to fry.
He contemplated one more line but he decided to leave it as his reward for later. He lifted his phone again and dialled the main office of the WEIR HOTEL.
“I need to speak to Mr Weir,” he told the office of the hotel minion that answered.
“May I ask who’s calling?” the overly posh voice caused Buddy’s teeth to grit.
“Bernard Owen. He’s gonna wanna to speak to me.”
“Hold please and I’ll check his availability.”
***
‘That twisted little shit!’ Rodney growled to himself as he rang off from Buddy.
He had urged his son Daniel to pledge KAPPA SO but he had never expected what happened to him. He was still tired from having to listen to his wife, Wendy, balling all night about how hurt her precious boy was. The stupid woman didn’t realise that coddling the boy too much was the reason he was unable to stand up for himself.
“I am shocked and appalled that such behaviour would happen in my Chapter House,” Buddy had tried at first in a sweetened tone but Rodney was no fool. He too had been Kappa So in his younger days and was locked in business with the Owen family.
When Rodney threatened Buddy with consequences the chapter leader laughed and his sweetened tones soured.
“You listen to me you son ‘a’ bitch,” he said to the hotel owner. “He fucking loved it and I have videos to prove it. We could make your son a star.”
“You wouldn’t dare …” Rodney barked back.
“Try me old man. I got nothin’ on ma schedule and a long day ahead. You keep your mouth shut and we say nothin’ more of it.”
Rodney pulled out his desk drawer and picked one of his cigars. He clenched it between his teeth and bit down hard.
Wendy wanted those responsible for hurting Daniel to be punished but what damage had been done really? He was a little shook up and he needed some stitches but maybe the incident would finally make him see what his father was trying to show him about the world.
He had been at the hospital earlier that morning but Daniel had nothing to say to him. Having to discuss what happened in detail with doctors and nurses had left him shell shocked. Wendy wanted the police involved but most of COLDFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT was on the Owen pay role anyway. Rodney told his wife that he would deal with it.
The Cappy had offered to speak to his son but clearly that had no real affect. Buddy has his own way of doing things, probably learned from the Owen boardroom.
The choice was simple. Keep quiet.
Enjoy this?
Pledging Kappa So is tough. Did you catch the beginning of the story?
The threats of Kappa So are always followed through. The Weirs will learn that the hard way.
