The Distillery
Features in: KNOCK KNOCK
Located in the Shanties area of the Shady City the Mack Distillery is a huge feature of the unique look of the south. Employing thousands from the poorest areas the Mack and Sons brand stands for working class values and treats its hard working factory operators like family.
It is overlooked by PADDY MACK, the second generation of Macks to run the distillery in the Shady City. It began it’s life as a small factory in BELLFIELD, to the west of Coldford, but their uniquely bottled whiskey became such a sensation the brand quickly grew and flourished. They supply large super market chains headed by the HARVESTER brand but their main claim to some infamy is their supply to the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB. They lost some of their team during an attack on the club back when it was in the hands of the old Baroness. The Mack boys tend to bury their grudges and bury them deep.

Moving forward the Mack and Sons Distillery is being led by Paddy into a new age of peace but when the filth of Shady City is targeting your brew it may not be so easy to keep your hands clean. Time to stir it up.

The Mack and Sons will be making their entrance into Knock Knock Volume 2.

Character Profile: Paddy (Patrick) Mack
Age: 34
Occupation: Manager Mack and Son’s whiskey distillery
One of five Mack children born to Brendan and Anne Mack. Paddy is the second eldest of his three brothers (Kieran, Aiden, Alfie) and his sister (Siobhan). He is seen as the most competent to lead the Distillery. He is the most level headed of the Macks but he isn’t without the skills and endurance it requires to run such a tough industry in the Shady City. The MACK DISTILLERY has been supplying the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB since it’s founding and as a result Paddy (AKA Patrick) has a steady working relationship with the Boss Lady TABITHA.
Paddy is a good looking, kind natured man but with the roguish charm one would expect from the Bellfield area. He and his brothers are the biggest supporters of football club BELLFIELD FC. The fans of the club had gotten such a terrible reputation after riots started at an away match it was up to Paddy to step in and shut the violence down so that the team that his distillery sponsored wasn’t removed from the league completely.
The explosions around the city linked to the HEADLINERS are rumoured to have been assisted and in fact provided by the Mack’s and their factory workers. Although, Paddy is attempting to bring them into a more peaceful era things in Shady City won’t improve unless he is willing to show a little strength through violence.
Paddy will be making his entrance in Volume 2 of the Knock Knock series.

Dance Like Everyone is Watching
LYDIA kept her eyes peeled. The girl, Emily, she met at her AUDITION was stretching in the corner. Emily wasn’t in the ballet any more. When the recession hit, Coldford City Ballet reduced their performances to half of their normal schedule and let half of their dancers go too. It was a last resort but work as a KNOCK KNOCK GIRL was all she could get. Still Emily stretched her ballerina legs like it mattered.
Lydia couldn’t let herself become too distracted by the plight of the other girls. The KNOCK KNOCK club kept them safe as they could be in that part of the Shady City. Sensible men knew better than to touch them without invitation.
There were a few things that surprised Lydia when she managed to get on the inside. The first was how well the girls were treated. They were the back bone of the club. Comedians, magicians, drag acts and singers all graced the stage but it was the scantily clad girls that drew the customers in and the adult entertainment that kept them there. That had always been the way of the club, ever since it was founded. Over the years it had become a cover of something much more sinister. That was what brought Lydia there. She was to observe and report but only engage if necessary.
“All right girls! Let’s get a move on, shall we?” screeched Bette from the doorway. “And Grace, get that fucking leotard washed. You look like a hobbo we’ve dragged in off the street.”
The girl named Grace, a slim, toned girl with sharply cut blonde hair picked at her costume. Some of the sequins had fallen off and her tights had laddered.
Bette was a middle aged woman with a severely angled face, dark hair and penciled eyebrows. She was no stranger to the ways of the club. She had been a Knock Knock girl herself back in her younger days. She was a feather dancer who had shared the stage with the old Baroness. She had been where they had been and she knew all too well how the city treated young women trying to make their way in the world. She still held some of the glamour of her life as a dancer with painted red lips and heavy made eyes.
The door opened and a girl in her early twenties came stumbling in. She was bleary eyed and dropped a bag that was hanging on her shoulder, almost tripping on it. She stumbled over to Bette and clutched onto her. Bette grabbed her face and stared deep into her eyes.
“Are you fucking junked?” she asked, moving the girl’s head from side to side.
The girl’s lips puckered under Bette’s grasp. “No, I’m fine,” she said.
Bette released her. “Like Hell you are. Do you think I was born yesterday? I know someone junked up on needles when I see them. Go to the bar and have Lisa give you a pick me up. We open in a few hours and if you come back in here looking bright and fuckable don’t come back at all.” The girl stumbled towards the bar where Lisa, the bar maid, was setting up. “If I find out who is selling her needles I’ll hang them from a fucking lamp post,” Bette growled to herself.
She was a tough mistress. She run a tight ship with the responsibility she had but Lydia’s eyes were on a bigger prize. Rumours were rife of extortion, murder and a connection to explosions across the city. Lydia had to be patient. She had to play her part, dance and flirt her way through. That night she was to share a stage with the BOSS LADY herself.

Bournton: The Giant Slayers
Stadium: Burnton Park
Sponsors: Northern Haulage
From the city of Bournton, north of Coldford they are often treated as the outsiders in the league. With limited resources, on paper they are considered unlikely winners. However, with their working class spirit pushing them on they have been known to show promise against the largest and richest teams – lending credence to their reputation as giant slayers.
It hasn’t been all plain sailing for them though. They have won major trophies yet suffered humiliating defeats abroad. The stadium closed briefly after 2 young children died due to a falling beam. The incident occurred after Bournton pulled a goal back against BELLFIELD in a match that was already a tense affair. Owner, Anwar Jaharrim, was imprisoned for ignoring the many warnings issued by fire and safety that the stadium was in need of repair.
Our most notable Shady City fan of Bournton is our lovely KNOCK KNOCK girl LYDIA. Even when she gets caught up in the madness of Coldford she never forgets her roots. In fact, it is her endearing Bournton accent that allows her to blend in so easily making her the most liked but least noticeable member of the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB.

Character Profile: Lydia Lowe
Age: 24
Occupation: Knock Knock girl.
Lydia isn’t afraid to throw herself into the thick of the action. As a Knock Knock girl she is well protected. Most people know that you are taking a huge risk if you think you are able to get too close to the girls.
From the Northern town of Bournton, Lydia is a new face in the Shady City. Normally a new face with a new story would be cause for suspicion but her sweet disposition, friendly approach coupled with an endearing accent make it easy for her to blend into Coldford society.
She is well liked by the patrons of Knock Knock as well as the other staff. Although she often finds herself on the receiving end of Tabitha’s aggression she takes it in her stride. She has a job to do after all, a job that goes beyond flirting with customers, dancing and distracting.
Lydia has her reasons for being in the Knock Knock club and it’s more than just a job to her. It is the ideal place to observe, to learn and to build a case. In order to do that she has to keep her head down, do her job and keep her feet firm when it comes to back lash from the Boss Lady herself.
Lydia still has a huge part to play in Sam’s story. As someone who has been on the inside, she has seen it all.

3 years and the music still sounds so sweet.
This time, back in 2016 I was nervously waiting as my thriller novel, Maestro, went live to the public. It was book 2 in the Shady City thriller series with book 1 being the short story – The Grip. (Although I should stress each book in the series is a stand alone story in its own right).
I was nervous because it was a little different from the likes of Red Snow and after The Grip being so well received It had a lot to live up to.
The Maestro himself, Vincent Baines, has been taken to readers’ hearts in ways that I didn’t expect. The Jury is still out on whether he is a hero or villain but I’ll leave that up to you all to decide. I just couldn’t be happier knowing he sparks debate. Our Maestro may take the centre stage again in the future so stay tuned.
The reception of Maestro from readers was overwhelming and still makes me incredibly proud to this day. It wouldn’t be possible without those of you who read, discussed and reviewed the story. For that I am eternally grateful.
Maestro is available to download HERE for just 99p/c or free on Kindle Unlimited.

Jamestown Rovers: We are the Clubby
Stadium: Douglas Park
Sponsors: Crusow Autos
Priding themselves on a small community spirit, Jamestown will never forget their roots. They may often find themselves fighting relegation at the bottom of the NPL but they don’t let that dissuade them. Fans of Jamestown are not in it for the glory of trophies. They generally believe in the local struggles and supporting one another no matter how difficult it gets.
A small suburb of Coldford, Jamestown manage to keep themselves free from the drama of the big city until they are brought into the thick of the action against a rivalling, richer team like Coldford City or even Athletic.
Our Shady City Thriller’s most notable fan of Jamestown is our reporter, Sam Crusow. His father’s garage sponsors the team and it is where Sam learned the importance of people coming together. Going to the games as a boy is one of Sam’s fondest memories and it was over this mutual love of the sport that he and his father Samuel (or Sam Snr) bonded most.
Unfortunately as the big city threatens to swallow up their little suburb they can’t hide forever. It will be up to the likes of Sam to expose the truth for the good of the people and even the villains of Coldford are no match for such an strong spirit.
See Sam in action as a reporter in the hit Knock Knock graphic novel series.
