Featured - Character Interview with Adrienne from "Upon Your Love" by Marie Lavender

Adrienne: It’s a pleasure to visit! Thank you for the invitation.
(Mutters a curse.) Damn, will you pardon me? These pins are burdensome! (Draws the hair pins from her long tresses before casting them haphazardly on the table between them.) There, that’s better. Why Maman and my nursemaid, Selene, insist on having one’s hair done up is beyond me.
Devika: Adrienne, I’m curious to find out more about you. What do you do for a living?
Adrienne: What an unexpected, yet fascinating question. Most people would say I’m a young woman in society…a lady, right? But since you’re asking me, I can assure you I am so much more. A gambler, an avid feminist, a wielder of various weapons. Oh, I can duel with the best of them. I also love a good ruse.
Devika: Interesting. What about your family background?
Adrienne: Ah. You’ve heard the rumors, I see. Both my father and brother are capable captains at sea. My mother caused her own trouble back in her day, though she now tries to keep me in line. I also have my sister-in-law Chloe and my Aunt Lina to keep me company. But never fear, I refuse to be tamed. Well, there’s Eric too, but I’ve found ways to circumvent him when necessary. I live at the Bellamont Plantation, and I’d have it no other way.
Devika: I see. So how did you meet (hero/heroine)?
Adrienne: (One can spot a rare blush on Adrienne’s cheeks.) Oh, him. I first saw Christian du Plessis at an event I attended with my friend Elena. I was quite unable to deny his request to assist him in a strategy he proposed.
Devika: Wow. That sure makes for an interesting story. How did you know he’s/she’s the one?
Adrienne: The moment I met him, I knew I recognized a trait in him, much like something I always saw in myself. We were two wayward souls, hoping to find someone who understood us a little better. Of course, it didn’t help that the bastard wouldn’t stop kissing me.
Devika: You strike me as a woman quite out of your time, almost like a female warrior. What gives you your strength? Would you say there was a decisive moment in your life that made you who you are today?
Adrienne: Oh, yes, I am strong and stubborn like my parents. I’d like to think I have their courage. To answer your question, it wasn’t any one moment in my life that made me who I am, but a multitude of them. And I suppose I’ve always felt highly protective of those I love.
Devika: Let’s talk about your dreams and goals in life.
Adrienne: My dream? To find the one person who’ll understand me and never wish to change me. As for ambitions, I’ve had far loftier goals than most women my age. Allow me to simply say I wish to be an equal to every man. I feel we’re all capable of the same things, don’t you agree?
Devika: Okay. And what is your greatest fear?
Adrienne: (Frowns, her gaze drawn away.) My greatest fear is losing someone I love. I shouldn’t like that to happen again.
Devika: Sorry, I didn’t mean to dampen the mood. Why don’t we finish off on a happy note? Tell me, if you could have anything in the world, what would you wish for?
Adrienne: Love, in its purest form, no expectations at all, just the simple blessing of having love and being loved. And, of course, I’d want my family to always be healthy and happy.
Devika: I’d love to talk some more, but unfortunately our time is up. Thanks so much for stopping by. I can’t wait to see what adventures you’ll have in store for us in the future. *waves*

Fara Hill, mother and faithful wife, is torn between her family at home and her urge to be at sea. Soon, she learns some disturbing truths. Was the past a fairy tale instead of reality?

Adrienne Bellamont Hill, born of a valiant captain and a fiery redhead, is untamed to her core and will bow to no man. Then Christian du Plessis enters her life with an offer she can’t refuse. Discovering the man behind the polished gentleman, she is drawn to him in many ways. Holding out for love is a family tradition, but can she resist the temptation of passion?
Christian finds this young woman to be a fascinating challenge, and is torn between keeping his distance from her and succumbing to her charms. A fierce battle of wills ensues as he sees she is much more than he ever imagined.
But danger lurks, threatening to destroy everything…
Can these two strong-willed individuals unite in the cause before time runs out?

Featured - Guest Post & Spotlight for "Rana: Teenage Queen" by Liza O'Connor

(That’s the planet this story takes place)
The Planet Hope is smaller than Earth, but nearly twice as old. They have some birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, but nothing dangerous until the humans arrived two hundred years ago. Now, the human farms have huge bulls, horses, cows, pigs, goats, lambs and chickens. Except for the lambs which are gentle and soft to touch, the fairies tend to stay far away from these new creatures.
The fairies have control over time, so asking how long they have lived here will only baffle you, since they can, if they wish, pop back to the beginning of time and marvel at the planet’s creation, then return to the present for a cup of tea.
Fairies are mostly responsible, kind, and thoughtful humanoids. However, once in a while, one will go bad, and the good fairies will cast the creature out. It’s possible that has caused resentment by those cast out, making them doubly mean and vengeful. For whatever reason, there are some really mean fairies and humans causing trouble on Hope now.
The bad fairies might even be casting spells on the good fairies because the good fairies rarely have children anymore. A fairy can live hundreds of years, but, on average, they are only having one child. Realizing this could end their race, when the ship of humans arrived two hundred years ago with their strange four legged creatures, the fairies did not send them away. Instead they sent out their tallest females, with their wings safely tucked away, to see if they could mate with giant humanoids, and it turned out they could and better yet, healthy children, somewhat taller came from the mating and they tended to retain their fairy powers. Thus, taller female fairies, who could pass for a short human were strategically placed in the various holds that the humans built.
Rana’s mother was sent to seduce the King of Stronghold, and she quickly did. However, when Rana was born, the king was so horrified at his daughter’s tiny size, he decided he would get his sons from a larger woman. While he loved her mother and Rana, he refused to give her more children, leaving Rana an only child.
We never know if the King had other children. One claimed he was the son of the King, but the King never acknowledged him, so when the King and Queen died on one horrible day, 16 year old Rana became queen of two Kingdoms.

Rana is only sixteen when she becomes queen. Her first challenge is to quell an internal coup while a massive army storms the gates of her castle. Her enemies believe her to be a child, but she has powers they’ve never suspected. She also has great dreams for her people, and she will do whatever is necessary to make them happen, even marrying a prince she does not want.
EXCERPT
Rana still remembered the shock that filled her when her mother confessed she wasn’t human, that Rana was only half-human, but to her eye, not even that. Her mother’s words horrified her at first, but then she realized she wasn’t a sorry excuse of a human, but a different entity. That made her special!
Her mother’s race had been on this planet since the beginning of time, or so their legends claim…Rana had rolled her eyes when her mother first said it.
However, the more she learned about their ability to manipulate time, the more probable and also less meaningful that statement became. It turned out she could go back to the ‘beginning of time’ herself, so the fact that some of her people wish to hang out and watch life evolve into its earliest forms didn’t really surprise her. In fact, it sounded like a nice way to spend a week or two.

Featured - Spotlight & Review of "Blood Pearl" by Carmen Dominique Taxer
Today, I'm featuring an awesome friend and author who shares my love for vampires. Find out more about Carmen Dominique Taxer's new book "Blood Pearl", which is Book 1 of the 'Shades of the Sea and Flames' series and a free download.
About the Book Blurb:
Shades of the Sea and Flame: Blood Pearl (Book 1): A Sanguinem Emere Novel
A Dark Romance Horror with hints of erotica, set in the political and fictional city of New Babylon, "Blood Pearl" is the first of five novellas in the "Shades of the Sea and Flame" series and is free on Amazon. A vampire novel with a twist, "Blood Pearl" reinvents the old Dark Gothic Romance side to vampire fiction in an effort to revive the Romantic Vampire.
"From the moment we're born, we're told we are weak."
Weak girls marry for title. Weak girls do as they are told. Ida Blanchefleur is not weak.
When her wedding night devolves into a graveyard nightmare, a series of events begins to unfold that carries Ida towards one horrifying decision: To choose between her own happiness, as dark and mysterious as it is, and the family legacy she has been sworn to uphold. Will Ida choose to uplift her family and regain them the wealth and privilege their dark patrons have promised? Or will she follow her heart as it leads her into a darkness as deep as the ocean floor where the Livyatan lurk?
Excerpt:
“Please don’t do this,” he said.
There was a sigh from the Master, and he whispered, “I’m tired.”
Douveaux turned and he didn’t dare look back.
He almost feared some physical retribution but none came, save for a hand on his shoulder.
He turned in stunned incomprehension and looked into the Master’s burnt face, reaching immediately to support him, leaning precariously. The Master’s skin had grown paler with the effort. But his eyes still sparkled like diamonds in the night, the grey lighting up with illumination from the sky.
“I am sorry, my old friend,” the Master said in a whisper and gritted his teeth, teetering dangerously against Douveaux.
The Master was heavy.
The old man gripped him once more around the ribs and pulled him close to his side.
Somewhere in the distance, and not as far away as he’d like, Douveaux could hear screams and rioting cries of triumph. They were coming.
“Over there,” he pointed to a mausoleum which stood abandoned. The flowers in the urns at its door had turned to dried husks and webs decorated the corners of the slabs that made a home for the dead as large and more impressive than a chapel.
A sorrowful angel perched on top, standing as tall as the nearest trees at the edge of the cliff.
Douveaux could hear the roar of the ocean beyond that dangerous drop as they approached.
The Master leant forward, using his weight to break the brief lock and stumble inside. Douveaux helped him lean back against the nearest stone bench where a rosary lay abandoned on the stone. It, too, was dust-speckled and fine. It was made of rubies and gold, and still here in spite of its clear worth.
Douveaux took the beads and clasped them around his Master’s neck.
The Master chuckled, but the sound of it was fading, like laughter down a long pipe.
It woke terror in Douveaux.
“Giving in to… Superstitions?” he asked.
The old man swallowed at the sound of pained breaths and nodded.
“If you won’t allow me to keep you safe,” he whispered - unsure why until he realised that he always whispered around the dying, “Then leave me this one piece of assurance, that someone is watching over you.”
“You are true, and loyal, Mr Douveaux,” the Master managed to say through his gritted teeth.
Douveaux wiped at his eyes, bowing his head. He stood slowly, hating himself as he laid a warm hand on the Master’s forehead and whispered, “Rest now, my Master. You’ve earned it.”
But the Master’s eyes were already closed, and not a breath stirred in him. He looked for the thumping heartbeat, but the Master was gone.
Douveaux stepped from the mausoleum, forcing the door shut with the strength that he had left, wrapping his hands around the lock itself and bending the metal until it warped and was unsurpassable by anyone that did not know what they were looking for within.
Down the moorland he saw torchlight burning and behind him, past the cliff he heard the ocean moan.
He smiled through his tears.
The Master had always coveted the sea.

My Review of "Blood Pearl" I am a huge fan of vampire stories. My love for them started with Anne Rice’s ‘Vampire Chronicles’ more than a decade ago, and they are still my favourite. It is through her that I crossed paths online with Carmen Dominique Taxer. I first read her in-depth blog posts about vampires and literature, and then I moved on to her own stories and books. And I have to say, I wasn’t disappointed at all.
“Blood Pearl” is the start of a series that revolves around characters that are hard to pin down and put into words. And to me, therein lies their fascination. Just when thought I had figured them out, they surprised me again. And I love it when a book keeps me constantly on my toes without being too complicated or obscure to follow. The plot has many threads that are woven together, not always without knots and not always for the naked eye to see, and that has me sufficiently intrigued to move on to the sequels such as “Blood Deluge”, Book 2 of ‘Shades of the Sea and Flame’ (which has a beautiful title with a hidden meaning).
While this is a novella and not a full-length novel, it captivated me and made me think long after putting the book down. There are some typical vampire elements in the story, but mixed with something that seems like the author’s own lore and magic. I am curious to know more about it. Ida strikes me as strong yet vulnerable, and the Gens is utterly fascinating, in the past as in the present.
If you are looking for a refreshing, somewhat daring and nicely intellectual change from the usual vampire novels, then I can highly recommend “Blood Pearl”.

Prologue
Camp, Delhi Cantonment, 16 August, 1857.
Things have changed forever. A day spent in the company of my old friend Knox made it clear. These distances can never be bridged.
The pole of his tent snapped in the storm yesterday; and for the sake of old friendship, I offered Knox my humble abode. But his rancour was jarring. His determination to teach the enemy a lesson, the unshaken belief in the rightness of our mission– such bitterness asks too much of friendship and duty.
Earlier we went over the battlefield. One of our regiments was destroying the village near the bridge to prevent the enemy from getting cover in it. Elephants were pulling down the walls. The villagers stood by as their houses turned into mud while the monsoon clouds gathered on the horizon. Unfortunately, they were the Jats, who, for the most part, are our friends. We decided that the destruction of their homes and fields was necessary. Twenty-three men – their countrymen – were lying together in the ditch at the back of the village; we weren’t sure if they were the rebels. A party of Rifles killed then en masse, just to be sure.
We left the village with our bags swollen like raisins in water. And who can blame our light-fingered gentry? Armies are said to travel on their stomach.
At some distance from our camp, I can see the sun setting over the fort of Delhi. It isn’t much different from the first sunset I witnessed here years ago. How things have changed! We came with a mission – to know this exotic land, to bring the light of knowledge and civilization to its darkness. Now the memory leaves me embarrassed. These massive red walls made me uneasy even then. Today they mock our camp again. Whatever be the outcome of this devil’s wind, it has revealed the banality of our mission.
Knox’s bitterness is an expression of the anger in the camp. When the cannons are quiet, the silence resounds with confusion, with terror, with rage, but most of all with the question ‘Why?’ As we sit around a small fire every night, the question rages in every mind. ‘Why the mutiny? Haven’t we brought the glory of civilization to this land of superstition?’ These thoughts simmer as we deal with hunger, heat and rain.
But soon these questions will be forgotten. The winners will annihilate the other side. Already I see the madness in the eyes as rumours reach us from other places – Cawnpur, Jhansi, Lucknow. Madness will soon be let loose.
I often feel that the answers that elude me today were within my grasp a short while ago. They are somewhere near, yet unreachable, like the time gone by.
I promise to look for them once I have found her again. For she, I feel, holds a part of it.
So every evening, I try to escape this madness by thinking about her, Princess Meera of Navgarh, a rebel soldier and my wife. It is the third year of our marriage. Three years of tenuous links and fragile understanding. It was only a matter of time before an explosion happened. And it happened that eventful week when Navgarh too burnt in the fire raging all across India. The news that the sepoys in Meerut had rebelled spurred both of us. Did I expect Meera to be a dutiful wife when all her beliefs, her convictions pulled her in the opposite direction? Was I surprised on knowing that she was in Delhi, amongst the rebels? Would she be surprised on knowing that I have followed her as an enemy… a British officer? And as I follow her, I stand here once again, after five years, outside the walls of the Red Fort in Delhi.

âWhatâs up?â he asked, trying to keep the situation light. She winked at him. âShouldnât I be asking that question?â she asked, looking pointedly down at his lower body.Reacting to her flirtation, his manhood immediately sprang to action, making Lakshman swear. âCut that out, Ruma,â he growled, sidestepping her as she wouldâve wrapped her arms around him. âI need a shower,â he insisted, not meeting her eyes. He went into the bathroom and locked himself in. The place smelled of Ruma. Cursing, Lakshman stood under the cold shower to tame his libido. She looked like she meant business. How could he convince her to wait till they got married? He dried himself with the towel that was on a rack, glaring at the mirror. He needed a shave. But no, they werenât going to make love, so it didnât really matter. Just then he realised that he would have to step out in the towel as his clothes were in the wardrobe. Swearing again, Lakshman walked into the bedroom.âLaki,â called out Ruma, eyeing him avidly. Fascinated, she got up from the bed and walked up to him. He appeared like a Greek God with his chiselled body that was still damp from the shower. She stood close to him and raised her left hand to caress his rough cheek. Her right hand was hooked into his towel as if she was going to pull it off him any second. Lakshman clamped his hand on hers, his fingers holding the towel firmly. âNo!ââHuh?!â She looked deeply into his eyes, her brown gaze like melted cocoa, inviting him to make love to her. Her mouth was pouted deliciously, glistening wetly, begging for a kiss. Lakshman groaned deep in his throat, letting go of her hand to wrap his arms around her. He placed his lips on hers, sucking her upper lip. She tasted as sweet as honey, driving him crazy. His right hand moved down the curve of her hip to touch a thigh. He traced the curve, working his way under her nightshirt to encounter her bare bottom.âRuma.â He deliberately removed his hands off her and raised his head to look at her.She stared back at him with slumberous eyes. âWhat?â A small frown puckered her forehead.âWeâll make love after we get married,â he declared.âWhat if I donât agree?ââIâll have to beg, right?â he grinned weakly. âPlease, my love. You know your parents wonât agree to a marriage between us. Doesnât it make sense to wait until after the event?ââWhat if I want you desperately?â She nuzzled his neck, her teeth taking a sharp nip.Lakshman groaned again, his arms crushing her to his chest. âDo you love me or just lust after my body?ââCanât I do both?â

About the author

Veronica Thatcher is an exciting new contemporary romance author. Ever since she was very young, she’s dreamed of becoming a doctor when she grew up. While still forging ahead with that, majoring in pre-med in college, she unwittingly stumbled upon a new dream—becoming a published author. Some may call her an introvert or a wallflower, but she has always found she could express herself better in written, rather than spoken, words. However, never in her wildest dreams had she envisioned she would pursue writing as a prospective career, not just a hobby. Her love for writing goes hand-in-hand with her love for a good romance novel—whether it be a feel-good, sweet romance or a dark, suspenseful one.
When she’s not studying, reading, or writing, she is usually found blasting her favourite songs, sometimes singing and dancing along to them. She dabbles in a number of activities, including painting, karate, singing and dancing. She is a huge chocoholic – probably the biggest – and she is an ice-cream junkie too. She considers herself technologically handicapped forever and has no shame in admitting that. She also deems chocolates her boyfriend, Patrick Dempsey the love of her life, and Friends her life!
Her first book, A Way Back Into Love, is slated for release in February 2017, and she hopes readers will enjoy it as much as she enjoyed writing it.

Featured - Book Blitz for "True Colours" by Elly Redding

Release Date: 25 November 2016
Publisher: SilverWood Books
Could you ever trust again – the man who broke your heart?
Kate Fenton thought she’d got the answer to that question all neatly sewn up. Ever since she went to Saul Preston’s London art gallery, a month before their wedding, and found him with his assistant – who looked as if she was in the middle of a game of strip poker.
Now, three years later, she’s no longer so sure. Saul’s back in her life with a new proposition – accompany him on a trip to Majorca as his interpreter. It’s an offer Kate can’t refuse, even though she knows she should. Successful and rich, he’s just the sort of client her translation company is trying to attract – even if he is her two-timing ex!
Saul’s never gone in for second chances. He’s never had the time, but he knows exactly what he’s doing when he suggests the trip to Kate. As gorgeous and infuriatingly easy to fall for as ever, he’s determined to rekindle their past. And he’s only got 3 days to do it…

From award-winning author Elly Redding comes a fresh, effervescent, passionate romance that reunites Kate, a London career girl, with Saul, her seriously successful, rich and gorgeous, ex-fiancé. He’s already broken her heart once, so maybe accepting his business proposition isn’t such a good idea. But sometimes decisions just aren’t that easy. As the chemistry between them bubbles with renewed vigour, Kate is sorely tempted. Can a leopard really change its spots – or is she just deceiving herself, with the man who broke her heart?
“A wonderfully warm romance, with lots of emotion and passion, and a generous sprinkling of delicious wit. I loved this story!” – Joanne Walsh, author
EXTRACT
“Go away,” she shouted frantically reassessing her options.
“I don’t really think you’re in a position to make demands, do you, trapped as you are? Unless, of course, you’re thinking of taking up abseiling. In which case, may I advise restraint? You’re on the fourth floor. You’re afraid of heights and I’m not standing in the right place to catch you.”
Good. It would ruin the whole point of the exercise if he was. She didn’t tell him that though. Instead she suggested he make an appointment, that if he wanted to see her, he should do what everyone else did.
“But I’m not everyone else, am I? I’m the guy who’s still considering suing you for breach of contract.”
“Contract - what contract?”
“Your promise to marry me.”
“You bastard.” It was the first thing she could think of to say, but she thought it summed up the situation perfectly. “In which case, may I suggest you contact my lawyer? I think you’ll find I’ve a very strong case for a counter claim. Or has something conveniently slipped your memory? Let me give you a clue. She had an amazing pair of breasts.”
