Sunday Inspiration: John Irving
“It´s natural to want someone you love to do what you want, or what you think would be good for them, but you have to let everything happen to them. You can’t interfere with people you love any more than you’re supposed to interfere with people you don’t even know. And that’s hard, …, because you often feel like interfering -you want to be the one who makes the plans.”
― John Irving, The Cider House Rules
John Irving, the renowned author of The Cider House Rules, The World of According to Garp, A Prayer for Owen Meany, as well as other important novels spoke at Chautauqua Institution last week.

Sunday Inspiration: “You are part of their lives”
“When you read about the lives of other people, people of different circumstances or similar circumstances, you are part of their lives for that moment. You inhabit their lives, and you feel what they’re feeling, and that is compassion. If we see that reading does allow us that, we see how absolutely essential reading is.” ~ Amy Tan
These words by Amy Tan express so well why I love reading and writing.

Wow, What A Week: Book Launch and Assorted Craziness

Let me bore you with the details. Long drive from Florida to New York. Arrived in New York to find substantial damage to the floors of our house by what appears to be a plumber who didn’t do his job correctly or in time. Meetings with professionals to determine what to do.

Sunday Inspiration: Comfort Zone

Chautauqua Institution, where we spend our summers, is a place known for being “at the end of your comfort zone.” As always we’ll hear controversial speakers, talk about difficult issues, listen to concerts we may or may not be “comfortable” with.

Sunday Inspiration: Graduation

How many of you are participating in or witnessing a graduation this month?
There are so many graduations these days, from pre-school to post-graduate. But I find many of the university commencement speeches to be especially inspiring.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from this year’s speeches:
“College, as you will realize soon, is not an on-ramp to the HOV success lane … It’s OK to fail, but it’s not OK to quit — you have more strength in you physically and mentally than you know,” -Jim Cramer, founder of TheStreet at Bucknell University
“You should rather find purpose than a job or a career.

No Good Deeds Go Unpunished?

The Sneads are ordinary folks, not rich by anybody’s standards. By their own description in the South Florida Sun Sentinel, they live from paycheck to paycheck and rent their home.
When an acquaintance of the Snead’s son was orphaned and had no other place to go, they invited the young man to live with them.
