Sunday Inspiration: Powerful Women

Powerful WomenIn honor of Women’s Month and International Women’s Day, I have not one but several inspirational quotes from powerful women about the beauty, wonder, and challenges of being a woman.

“Extremists have shown what frightens them the most: a girl with a book.” -Malala Yousafzai

“Well behaved women rarely make history.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

“Think like a queen.

Researching A Novel: What Do You Need to Know and When?

Researching A Novel. Really? I mean, it’s fiction. Don’t we make stuff up?
researching a novel

No matter how much we think we know, all novelists worth their salt do tons of research.

This week a novelist who follows Southern Exposure asked me to blog about researching a novel. I’m always delighted to help if I can.

Sunday Inspiration: Record Breaker

I’m not a big basketball fan, but I love this story about a young Iowa Hawkeye player who could have broken the record for consecutive successful free throws but chose not to because the young man who held the record was killed in a car accident a few years earlier before he could continue his streak.

Sunday Inspiration: “You’ve got to know when to fold’em…”

You've got to know when to fold'em

Do you remember the lyrics from the hit song The Gambler sung by the late great Kenny Rogers?

“You’ve got to know when to hold’em,

know when to fold’em,

know when to walk away,

and know when to run.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard and spoken and sung those lyrics in my lifetime.

New Orleans At My Fingertips

I’m finishing my latest book, Night Magic, which will be my first original independently published novel.

Jackson Square

Those of you who read along with me know that I got the idea for writing Night Magic in the midst of readying my backlist novels, Lady of the Night, and Bayou Midnight, for distribution as ebooks.

Sunday Inspiration: “I am strong!”

You have to watch this incredible (short) video showing a father motivating his 3 year old daughter, Allya.

Each morning she stands in front of a mirror and repeats, “I am strong. I am smart. I am beautiful. I work hard.” And more.

What if every child had that kind of encouragement and support?

James Patterson: Superstar and Nice Guy

James Patterson

James Patterson autographing books

Are you a James Patterson fan?

If you are, you have lots of company. Patterson has sold more than 350 million copies of his books since his first novel in 1976 — a few more than me — and he holds the record for the most #1 NYT best sellers, with nearly 70 — which by the way, is his age.

Sunday Inspiration: A Whale of a Story

a whale of a story

Are you a fan of the super-star author James Patterson?

I’ve only read a couple of his books, but I had the thrill to hear him speak this week at a sold out luncheon supporting the Library Foundation for Sarasota County. I’ll tell you more about his wonderful lecture for my Wednesday blog, but for this morning’s Sunday Inspiration, I’d like to share a  story he told at the end of his talk that touched him deeply — and me as well.
