Kensi Stone comes to South Port to take care of the Inn for two weeks and to get away from the drama of her ex husband. Little did she know that a hurricane would hit and Tim Tucker would end up coming to her rescue. The same Tim Tucker she'd been in love with all those years ago. The same Tim Tucker who had broken her heart.
It had been a rough two years for Tim. After losing his wife to cancer, he didn't like the looks of pity that people in the town seemed to give him. He was the sheriff for heaven's sake, not to mention an ex marine; hard was part of his life. But hard gets dissolved quickly when he finds himself in Kensi's presence. The trouble is the woman is still punishing him for the stupid thing he'd said to her all those years ago. The stupid thing was, he'd thought he'd been protecting her.

“What about that race? I mean, so you can prove yourself.”
The look on her face went from a passive smile to one of concentration. “You really think you could beat me?”
It made him smile. A little competition still got Kensi’s attention. “Sweetheart, I was a Marine. I will beat you. But there’s only one way to find out.”
Without hesitation, she crouched like she was at the starting line of a track race. “We’ll do it like we used to, down to the rock and back here, then in the water.”
Anticipation surged inside of him. “Hold up.” He tugged his shirt off.
Her eyebrows lifted. “You need your shirt off to beat me?”
It was silly, but he grinned at her, then flexed. Trey had been teasing him mercilessly about working out, and in the past few months it had actually motivated him to resume his routine of push-ups, sit-ups, and running. “Listen, Olympic runners don’t wear much because of what’s called drag. It holds them back.”
She broke into a grin. “So you’re Olympic level?”
He crouched, readying himself. “Baby, I’ve been Olympic level my whole life.” It was surprisingly easy to tease her like they used to.
“Cocky as ever.”
He laughed, feeling like his teenage self.
She rolled her eyes. “What are the stakes?”
“The usual.”
The tension in her body relaxed, and she stood and wagged a finger at him. “Oh no, that’s not the terms. We’re not kids anymore.”
Tim basked in satisfaction as he thought of all the times he’d raced for a kiss. And of course, sometimes he’d let her win and she would kiss him anyway. Tonight, his desire to kiss her felt strange and yet familiar at the same time. All the guilt that had flared when Uncle Henry had pressed him about Kensi vanished.
What could he say? He wanted to see if this woman would kiss him.
“Hey, if you’re a fraidy-cat, then don’t worry about it.”
She tossed a hand at him. “Tim, please. We’re adults and—”
He cut her off. “Both single.”
What in the crap was he saying?
“I’m not looking for a relationship, Tim.”
“Who said anything about a relationship?” The word was hard for him to even say. Dang it. “You’re right. Never mind.” He bent and picked up his shirt.
“Hey,” she said, sounding disappointed. “You don’t get to call me a fraidy-cat, then refuse to race me.”
The inkling of fun and flirtatiousness hit him again. He dropped his shirt. “Okay.”
“Fine.” Her lips pursed and she dropped back into a runner’s stance. “Remember, don’t cry when you lose to a girl.”
Now it was on. He crouched to her level. “I’ll let you call it.”
“Fine. On three. One, two, three!”
