Madison picked up her phone and noticed that she’d received three new messages via Facebook. Of course it was Kane. Who else would it be? She had been ignoring him since the lunch with Mr. Reed.
She switched on her music and put in her earbuds. Music blasted her worries to the background. She rushed down the stairs, ready to push her body to the limits. It always helped to keep her stress down when she exercised.
The problem was that just as she walked out, she spotted Kane. He was standing next to a blue Mustang. Of course, he looked model perfect with his ripped jeans and messy hair. When he saw her, he moved toward her apartment.
She yanked out her earbuds in disbelief. “What are you doing here?”
Kane looked far too innocent and pointed to the building. “Oh, you live here? I was going to meet a friend. I guess he lives in your apartment complex, too.”
“Liar.” She knew he was here for her. “How did you find my address?”
Kane crossed his arms. “Really, Mads? I’m not a crazy stalker. Look, I have to get going.” He paused. “But when are you picking me up for our date tomorrow tonight?”
“I’m not taking you to the fundraiser.”
“Your boss told you to. It’s a non-date, remember?”
“Call him and have me fired, then.”
He didn’t move. “I’d like to go.”
“Sorry, not possible. I’m not feeling well.” Which was the truth, but not the whole truth.
“You look just fine to me.” He gave her a sweeping look. “Unless you’re afraid.”
She felt caught, then sputtered. “Why would I be afraid of you?”
He took a step toward her, his eyebrows raised.
“Because you know things aren’t finished between us. We need to talk about us. About the past.”
“There is no us. And let's leave the past where it is."
He shook his head. "Nope. We need to talk."
"You don’t get to tell me what I need to do.”
He put up a hand and turned away from her. “Fine. Never mind.”
She watched in disbelief as he disappeared inside of her building. Irritation plagued her as she started into a run.

So I grew up moving around. Like--every two years moving. And, every summer my family would come to a ranch/farm community in Southern Utah and visit my grandmas and grandpas. Soo--that's where the idea for a HUGE ranch family came from.
A family that isn't just into music and first and second love stories, but a family that celebrates God, country, family. A family that struggles together and laughs together around a huge table during holidays. Sigh.
