EXCERPT:
Raya awoke with a start the next morning, and then she relaxed back into the soft pillow to the sway of the cruise ship. She’d slept so well. She thought of that kiss and smothered her giggle with the other pillow. “What am I doing?” she muttered, throwing back the blankets.
She slipped to her knees and said her prayers. For most of her life, she’d made a habit of praying in the morning. Her ex hadn’t been religious. At first, it hadn’t bothered her, but then he had made fun of her and her praying ways. It was better in so many ways that they weren’t together now.
With her rosary in hand, she silently went through the Latin prayers she’d been taught in Catholic school. They were comforting to her and made her feel closer to her mother, too. Her mother had been vigilant about prayer while she was growing up, and even though hard things had happened in Raya’s life, prayer was still a big deal. While she didn’t feel God all the time, she still believed He could hear and answer her prayers.
What would her mother think of Mark James?
Raya put the rosary down. She would definitely approve. He was every bit the larger-than-life type, like her mother had always described her father.
Raya was surprised that she had fallen for this guy. At first, she’d thought he was just a rude, dumb jock type. Yet from day one, he’d been able to verbally spar back and forth with her. He had given as much as she had dished out.
Remembering last night, dinner and dancing and that kiss, she did a little twirl and felt like she was some silly girl in a rom-com movie. This was ridiculous. She was only on a one-week cruise. Seven days. And they were on day three. The thought dampened her mood, because what would happen when the cruise was over?
She didn’t want to think about it, so she pushed those thoughts away and quickly showered. It was seven-thirty a.m., and she didn’t want to do herself up too much for zip lining, but she wanted to look presentable.
Before the cruise, she had done a small shopping trip. In truth, she had bought all these things because she’d needed retail therapy, a distraction from the end of her case and all the threats from Miguel Sanchez.
Now she was happy to have outfits she liked. She went through her clothes and decided on a pair of biker shorts and a Lycra hot pink T-shirt. She did her makeup and opted for a black visor and sunglasses, then slid into Kiva sandals that she could get wet in or be able to hike in. When she had read through the zip-lining portion, it had said they might swim in the river, so she wanted to be prepared. She decided not to bring a swimsuit; she just wanted to pack light. So she put a credit card in her bra, along with her ship ID. She didn’t need much else. Oh. Her passport. She got that too.
Raya was trying to decide where she would put it or if she needed to buy a little shoulder bag when there was a knock at the door. She pulled the door open, and to her immense satisfaction, Mark stood there, looking every bit the Navy SEAL he was. Although he wore gym shorts and a tight Lycra white shirt, he also had a visor and sunglasses. A strap across his chest secured a shoulder pack.
He waggled his eyebrows at her. “Lookin’ good. You ready for this?”
A nervous laugh escaped her. “Truthfully, I’m not sure. As you mentioned on the first day when I was struggling a bit with the stairs, I’m not in shape, and I don’t really do a lot of outdoor things.”
He waved a hand. “I was being a jerk.”
“True.”
“It will be easy. Plus, this is for tourists. They won’t make it hard.”
She nodded and looked around her room, wondering if she should grab anything else.
“You want me to hold on to your passport for you? I have mine in my little pouch here.”
It was like he’d read her mind, and she handed the passport to him. “I guess you are the type that’s always prepared, right?”
A wide grin crossed his face. “When you’re with me, you never gotta worry about anything.”
