CHAT THURSDAY – CHARACTER INTERVIEW – ADRIÉN FONTAINE

“This taste of freedom was divine. Even if I knew it could not last. Fontaine would come for us and he would demand that we return home. He needed us. He needed me.”

““Fontaine… He is my father”— I clapped my hand over my mouth but it was too late. Mercedes and Simone had both heard me. And their eyes were pools of horror and confusion.”

rem:  Bonjour, Monsieur, bienvenue. It’s lovely to chat with you today.

FONTAINE:  Yes, well, I thank you for asking me.

rem:  Can you tell us about your first wife?

FONTAINE:  stares

rem:  I’m sorry…

FONTAINE:  Non, it is good. She was… always smiling and singing, and shining bright, like a star to me. I never knew her to say a derogatory thing about anyone, not even when…

rem:  It’s okay, Monsieur.

FONTAINE:  Merci. She was brave when it happened, kind even to him—she forgave him.

rem:  She sounds like a remarkable woman. It takes a strong character, and integrity to forgive something so vile.

FONTAINE:  She was truly remarkable.

rem:  I know she died young. Can you tell us about that?

FONTAINE:  pauses

rem:  I know it’s painful. I’m so sorry, Monsieur, for your loss.

FONTAINE:  Oui. It was my sister, she was very ill—mentally. Women’s hysteria they called it.

rem:  I know she was very unstable. They call it bipolar now, manic depressive.

FONTAINE:  She would sit in her room and sing to herself, rocking back and forth like a small child. Then for no reason she would become violent.

rem:  She was treated with laudanum, correct?

FONTAINE:  She was, yes, when she would take it.

rem:  How did she die?

FONTAINE:  I never knew, but I suspected foul play.

rem:  I’m so sorry for your loss, Monsieur.

FONTINE:  Merci, but the loss of my sister was no great loss.

rem:  No, I’m sure it wasn’t. pauses What of Scarlett?

FONTAINE:  She was… closes eyes … most precious to me, a delight. The spitting image of sa mère.

rem:  That must have been painful, to see her grow up, looking so like sa mère.

FONTAINE:  nods

rem:  When you returned from France—

FONTAINE:  I was wrong.

rem:  What happened?

FONTAINE:  Lissette—my sister—had created more trouble and disturbances. I was there to help settle her.

rem:  And Scarlett?

FONTAINE:  I left her. To be safe.

rem:  But she wasn’t safe, Monsieur.

FONTAINE:  I’m not proud of it. paces I didn’t want it to happen.

rem:  She forgave you. Did you know that?

FONTAINE:  Stephen told me.

rem:  And you found peace, n’est-ce pas?

FONTAINE:  I did, oui.

rem:  And Scarlett is happy now.

FONTAINE:  nods

rem:  You look weary, Monsieur.

FONTAINE:  Yes, it’s wearying business. My sister. And Scarlett. My beloved Esther.

rem:  Monsieur, I thank you for visiting with me today. I know it has been difficult.

FONTAINE:  I thank you, Madame. You are most gracious and kind.

“ “Scarlett, Fontaine told me of his… treatment of you. And he was riddled with guilt. We talked much in his last days, he and I.” Stephen turned to look at me then. “And we prayed. Together.”

            “You prayed with him?”

“I did.” He tucked his finger underneath my chin, lifted my face to his. “And he prayed too. He asked for forgiveness. He asked me to tell you. He wanted to ask your forgiveness.” ”

Formatting was an… ordeal. More specifically, formatting the footer / page numbers! Ya’ll almost got a book with NO page numbers!! Yes, it was that maddening!

Then a simple little prayer, and voila! Page numbers! Not as I prefer, but page numbers! So it’s done AND copies are ordered, and now I can devote my time back to NaNo

Except for all these little foxes…. OY VE!

But hey, 347’s better’s none, right!!

I love how these stories are overlapping and intertwining, each new one going back to the previous ones, and tying them all together!

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

WREADING WEDNESDAY – FEATURED BOOK EXCERPT – THE TILTING LEAVES OF AUTUMN

#WreadingWednedsay is now dedicated to ‘wreading’ bits and excerpts from my books!

“Mamá got me some licorice sticks.” Mercedes had come skipping all the way to Versailles. “And lemon drops and butterscotch and peppermints.” She clutched a brown bag in her hand.

And we all clamored around, waiting for her to distribute the sugary wealth.

“Well.” Pearl alone stamped her foot, scuffing up a small pinecone and sending it skittering. “What are you waiting for? I want my peppermint.”

Mercedes was unruffled, sitting calmly on the bench, and took out a butterscotch drop, popped it in her mouth, and made a great show of enjoying it. “Scarlett, dear, what would you like?”

“Do you have any chocolate drops?” She always had chocolate drops.

“Of course I do.” Mercedes reached in her bag and drew out not one but two chocolate drops. She turned to Simone, who was waiting patiently for her ginger drops. Mercedes drew out two of Simone’s favorite candy and handed them to her.

Then she set the bag on the bench, nestled between me and her, and asked how my mamá was feeling. She had been ill lately, and listless.

“Docteur Gilles has been to Bastille. He says she’s fine and she must rest.” I popped another chocolate drop in my mouth, which marbled my words, “I wanwa go to wah shorh.”

“I’m sure she’ll—”

“Mercedes Townsend, you can be so cruel.” Tears welled in Pearl’s gray eyes but she wouldn’t let them flow. She turned and stormed off, stomping her narrow little feet for good measure.

“Do come here, Pearl.” Even then Mercedes had a motherly tone. “Of course I have peppermints for you.”

“Why must you torment me so?”

“Torment you? I don’t torment you.”

“You most certainly do.”

Mercedes didn’t say a word. Neither did she retrieve the peppermints for Pearl.

“How can you sit there and ask about Scarlett’s mamá when I don’t even have a peppermint?”

“Do you not care about her mamá?”

Pearl harrumphed and turned again to leave.

“Pearl.”

“Of course I do. I like Scarlett’s mamá as good as anybody.”

Mercedes waited still.

Pearl turned to me. “I’m sorry your mamá is ill, Scarlett.” She turned back to Mercedes. “Now may I please have my peppermints?”

Without so much as a breath or another word, Mercedes reached in the bag and drew out three peppermint drops and handed them to Pearl.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – FOR LIFE OR UNTIL BY ANNE GARBOCZI EVANS

When a volatile Celt accepts a proposal from a Roman Tribune, anything but a smooth marriage is on the horizon.

Heartbroken and newlywed, Ness leaves her family and all that is familiar for life in Rome. But her husband, Aquilus Paterculi is career driven and Ness soon decides she wants a divorce, something Aquilus won’t even consider.

Can love survive the steel will of two opposing partners? Will Ness wear her husband down and gain her freedom? Will Aquilus prevail in subduing his wild Celtic wife? Or will something new evolve from the two of them?

Ms. Evans weaves a turbulent tale, with tempers and emotions and strong willed characters. I sensed the tenderness of Aquilus’ heart underneath the armor of his Stoic vows. I felt the longing of Ness’ heart to belong and be embraced by a husband who seemed so disinterested. I felt his conviction of what is right and his confusion of his heart demands. I felt Ness’ homesick longing and her fight to keep her hold on her independence.

Ms. Evans brought to light a culture previously unknown to this reviewer, with characters who came to life on every page. The story comes to life with realistic and genuine storyline and settings.

I received a free copy of this book, but was under no obligation to read the book or to post a review. I offer my review of my own free will. The opinions expressed in my review are my honest thoughts and reaction to this book.

Anne is a mental health counselor, military spouse, and mama to an opinionated preschooler named “Joe-Joe” and a very dramatic baby named “Chip.” Reading Rosemary Sutcliff as a middle school student and taking Latin in college instilled in her a love of the Roman Empire, leading to her Love & Warfare series. Moving to the CO Rockies inspired her to write the Lawmen & Suffragette series, romantic comedies set in the Old West. Working in mental health got her interested in writing women’s fiction.

When not writing or reading, you can find Anne introducing her boys to the outdoor wonders of colorful Colorado.

The southern town of Saisons lies at the crossroads between North and South, progressive and genteel antebellum life. Between East and West, between history and heritage, and new frontiers. Downton Abbey meets Gone With the Wind.

It’s 1912, in a world where slavery is dying and women’s rights are rising, and four young women who once shared a bond—and experienced a tragedy—question their own truths.

Scarlett was the shrinking violet in the group. Faithful to her friends, and hiding secrets of her own. When Mercedes steps in to rescue her, she unknowlingly plucks the thread that unravels Scarlett’s whole world.

But as Scarlett strives to hold fast to what is familiar the fabric of her life continues to come undone and secrets that are best kept hidden are exposed.

FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – WHY I’M A MOTHER and THANKFULNESS

I wrote this for Mother’s Day but it seems fitting as Thanksgiving approaches. Of all that Father has given me in my life, all He has blessed me with, I am most thankful for the children He gave to me.

25 November 1978, 1:37 in the afternoon. The moment that changed my life forever, the moment I became a mother. The moment my first born breathed his first breath. Douglas Harper McClinton, II, my ginger boy, my studious pensive one, you feel deeply and love generously.

8 August 1980, 8:09 P.M. My delight doubled, two fledglings in my nest, two boys in my arms and my heart. Russell William McClinton, my tow-headed one, my comic and daredevil, my tender hearted boy, you make me smile and always think of others first.

14 September 1982, 2:20 in the middle of the night. My girl, the third strand in the cord of my heart strings. Margaret Andrea McClinton, your white blond pigtails, your infectious smile, my silly-loves-everybody-and-everything, tender-heart-for-kids-everywhere girl.

I always wanted to be a mommie, always thought I wanted a house full of kids, thought I’d have more when I got remarried. But ya know what? Father gave me the three kids He picked for me. He gave me the perfect kids for me because—and this blew my mind when He whispered to me just now—I’m the perfect mom for them. I’m who they need in their lives and they’re who I need in my life. For all the “honorary kids” I’ve had, Father gave me these three. And they’re what I need, they’re who I need. They’re my heart and my everything.
