FIRST LINE FRIDAY – A ROAD CALLED LOVE by MURRAY PURA

Welcome to First Line Fridays, hosted by Hoarding Books!!!

Tell us your first line in the comments & then head over to Hoarding Books to see who else is participating!

THE BLURB:

There was nothing the police could do – the Amish girl was of age, she was leaving the community of her own free will, no laws had been broken. The state troopers could not force her back home even if the boy she was running from Pennsylvania with was a suspected drugs dealer. But there was something the Amish could do – pray, hope, encourage one another with God’s Word – and ask two young people who were still in rumspringa to go after the girl and plead with her to return to them. So a journey begins, a journey of great danger and a journey of great distances but also a journey of great love.

THE FIRST LINE:

“Michal.”

“Mmm.”

“Michal!”

“What?”

“Wake up. Come on. Wake up. It’s my birthday.”

MY THOUGHTS:

Confession: I’ve not been a fan of Amish fiction! GASP! But Mr. Pura’s writing style and this story hold my interest and keep me turning the page.

GENRE:

Religious & Inspirational Fiction, Amish Fiction, Romance

WREADING WEDNESDAY – FEATURED BOOK EXCERPT – THE LONG SHADOWS OF SUMMER

#WreadingWednedsay is now dedicated to ‘wreading’ bits and excepts from my books—there’s five now! And because book 3 in my Seasons series, The Silent Song of Winter, releases next month, here is the first chapter of book 1, The Long Shadows of Summer.

She looked so familiar to me, but I couldn’t place her. Sitting on the bench as she was outside Hooper’s Market. Her hat was at a rakish angle, her cocoa colored hair perfectly coiffed. Seemed there were tears in her green eyes. I was certain I had never seen her before. But she reminded me of someone…

It couldn’t be her, though. She was dead, we had all watched her die. Floating away like that in the swamp. Her lavender dress billowed up like a balloon, her dark hair fanning out on the black water. We had made a pact, Pearl and Scarlett and me, never to tell anyone what happened.

I was the oldest of us girls and we did everything together. As often as our elders would allow, at least. Ma mère worked for Simone’s grand-mère, Madame Antoinette Dubois. I helped Mamá most times, but sometimes I was allowed to play with Simone and her friend Pearl.

It happened in 1897, the summer I was eleven. Mamá didn’t make me help her as much in the summers and I was allowed to go outdoors with Simone and Pearl.  Our friend, Scarlett’s Mamá, though, made her help with dusting the abovestairs rooms, but she was permitted to come outdoors after luncheon was served.

Simone always was most daring, walking atop fences and climbing trees and such. That summer, though, it seemed she didn’t have a care. She wasn’t just daring, she was indifferent. She climbed higher than we had ever seen her climb. She would swing from the branches, like the monkeys we read about in our lessons, and then drop to the ground. She jumped right in the black water of the Edisto River that day.

And floated away, pale as death…

Excusez-moi, Madame Renaldi.” Brooks’s baritone voice ruptured my reverie. “This was left for you.” And he handed me a small crumpled envelope.

I thanked him, and mused at the curious communique. I was housekeeper, but did not typically receive mail abovestairs. Personal letters, and household accounting and the like all were brought to the kitchen entry.

The ivory blade of the letter opener slipped easily through the fragile parchment, and I retrieved a small scrap of paper, folder over once.

Meet me at Versailles.

NEW WEEK NEW YEAR – SPECIAL EDITION – RESTORATION

Looking back a bit, taking inventory of sorts—and snickering at how simplistic and basic Robin’s Nest was in the early days.

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line… Zechariah 4:10

On setting goals.  I’ve never done the whole New Year’s Resolution bit.  Attempted it a few times, because it was a challenge, and I felt obligated.  To prove I could do it.  Gauntlet thrown and all that.  (1 January 2015)

Somewhere toward the end of 2014 Father gave me a Word for ’15. I had never heard of a Word for the year until somebody shared on Facebook what their word was for the coming year. In the twinkling that I read that, without even the intrigue of the idea, without even a moment to consider or wonder what my word might be, Holy Spirit spoke it to me: FORWARD.

For the record and upon reflecting, my Word for 2014 was:

SHIFT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLlRp8yYpwk

It surely was true. Everything in my life began to SHIFT in 2014. And Father nudged me forward in 2015 into what I now see as my present. I went into 2014 just beginning to write, I started my blog and released my debut novel, Tessa. And that beginning gained momentum in 2015, and moved me FORWARD fully, vested in this thing called writing.

True to His nature, Father once again gave me my Word for the New Year before I even gave it a thought or consideration, INHABIT.

Cool thing about this banner—I had a vision a few years ago of this exact castle in which the castle was mine. Imagine my utter astonishment when I saw a photo of the actual place! Even the terrain was the same, and the sea beyond!

This past year, 2017, has been a year of EXPECTATION.

So many things, so many years, waiting, waiting… And last year (end of 2016) Father told me this was a year of EXPECTATION. And I’ve seen things begin to turn. Big things, heart things, things I’ve longed and yearned and prayed for. The tide is turning, the dawn is breaking.

So this year, 2018, is RESTORATION.

Lies kept me from the fullness of God’s Word. From the promises that He has given to His children. I peruse old journals and I can track my history, my growth, changes in my thinking. Learning who I am. I can see dead leaves falling away and new growth breaking through. I think of all the things I’ve lost and gone without, all the promises I’ve read and wondered when it will be my turn.

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten. Joel 2:25

There’s been a LOT of years, a LOT of things the locust has eaten. A LOT the enemy has stolen.

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10

I’ve been robbed because I let myself be robbed. I’ve blogged about it before. I write about it, for goodness sake! I’ve been robbed because… because I didn’t believe I deserved not to be. I’ve been robbed because I didn’t know I could fight it. I didn’t know how to fight it.

But now I do. (I’ve blogged about that, too. A lot!) And now, it’s time for REST and RESTORATION.

For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds,’ says the Lord. Jeremiah 30:17

And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. Job 42:10

res·to·ra·tion, restəˈrāSH(ə)

noun: restoration

the action of returning something to a former owner, place, or condition.

synonyms:  repair, repairing, fixing, mending, refurbishment, reconditioning, rehabilitation, rebuilding, reconstruction, overhaul, redevelopment, renovation

Restoration is not mine to do or give. Restoration is Father God’s to give. It’s in His hand, it’s all in His hand. And I’ve claimed what’s mine, what He’s promised me. And now it’s time.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12

Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19

So I go into 2018 with great eagerness and anticipation, great hope and joy. Because RESTORATION. RESTORATION is mine this year.

FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – ANTICIPATION

Anticipation. Expectation. Hope. Eagerness. Keenness. Excitement. Faith.

As we approach the New Year, I am filled with a great sense of anticipation and excitement. An almost tangible sense of what’s to come, of promises fulfilled. And the journey that got me here is faith.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Faith is a journey that begins at salvation. It’s a step into the unknown, into the spirit realm. It’s taking the hand of God the Father, and taking Him at his Word. It’s walking in righteousness and peace and Truth.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:14-18

Faith is learning who He is so we can know who we are.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Faith is walking in confidence that what He says is true. Faith is trusting God for who He is.

There is the gift of faith.

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Romans 12:3

And the act of faith.

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:14 & 26

Faith isn’t a one-time event. It’s a living thing that grows—or withers and dies.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

Faith is an anchor. It doesn’t keep us from the storms, the disasters, catastrophes of this world, even our own foolishness. Faith takes us through them.

1Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:1-5

And with faith, we bring hope to hopeless situations, hopeless people. We bring light to darkness and healing to crushed hearts and spirits.

Hope burns with anticipation and excitement. And in the final days of 2017, anticipation and excitement are bubbling over in my heart.

Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

Friends of Authors Society

[image error]Who knows the best way to show your love for your favorite authors? (I’m one, right? Your favorite?) Besides the obvious of buying and reading my books, leaving a review on Amazon tickles their calculations and formulas and moves my books up in their ranks, which in turn means more peeps see my books, which means more peeps are likely to buy them.

There are other things you can do, as well. Suggest my books to your library or book club. Tell your friends, buy gift copies to give to your friends. Heck, tell ME how much you love ‘em!

Robin’s Nest, Stories by Design

Writing first, blog second. That’s harsh, I know, but the blog supports the writing and if there’s no writing, then the blog is, well, a solo act. And while I love blogging, and welcoming readers and other authors, writing is my true love. I have guest posts lined up for January, and topics for the rest of the year. Interviews will reappear hopefully in March, possibly as early as February. Depends on how well Pearl and Simone (and myself) cooperate! That said, I have started on a new Rx and hope to see some improvement in how I feel on the day to day…

Seasons, the Series

The southern town of Saisons lies at the crossroads between North and South, progressive and genteel antebellum life. Between East and West, between history and heritage, and new frontiers. Downton Abbey meets Gone With the Wind.

It’s 1912, in a world where slavery is dying and women’s rights are rising, and four young women who once shared a bond—and experienced a tragedy—question their own truths.

The Long Shadows of Summer…

[image error]Mercedes has always been an avid reader and devours each new Sherlock Holmes mystery as soon as she gets her hands on them. When one of her friends comes to her, Mercedes vows to keep Simone’s secrets and uncover the truth.

But as Mercedes plays detective to her friends’ questions, she discovers something far more shocking—she herself is not who she thought she was.

…and The Tilting Leaves of Autumn

[image error]Scarlett was the shrinking violet in the group. Faithful to her friends, and hiding secrets of her own. When Mercedes steps in to rescue her, she unknowlingly plucks the thread that unravels Scarlett’s whole world.

But as Scarlett strives to hold fast to what is familiar the fabric of her life continues to come undone and secrets that are best kept hidden are exposed.

Coming in February

The Silent Song of Winter

[image error]Pearl had lived under the impossible taskmaster of perfection. Nothing she does or ever did pleased her mother. And nothing she ever did could disappoint her father.

Caught up in the mystery of her friend’s curious—and secretive—return, Pearl wrestles with her own decisions, and flees lest her own secrets are exposed.

Seasons is ONE | GIANT | STORY, told by four main characters, each with their own contribution and perspective to the story. One set of characters, one fictional setting, one timeframe to research (1912 – 1913.) And it continues with The Silent Song of Winter.

COVER REVEAL 9 FEBRUARY

and The Silent Song of Winter

[image error]Simone Bishop’s life was unraveling. All she had known and held dear was gone from her. At ten, all she wanted was to escape beneath the black waters of the Edisto River. She couldn’t know her whole life would be stolen from her.

When she returns to Saisons fifteen years later, she has no memory of ever having been there. Not even that it was her birthplace. Enlisting the help of her childhood friend, Mercedes, Simone encounters misty memories, and stirs up more mystery than she started with.

The final chapter of Seasons is The Whispering Winds of Spring.

Coming in 2019

Yes, I’ve got my next series in mind, The Steppe House. A literary tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright, the Steppe House is fashioned after Mr. Wright’s Falling Water House. Built into a mountain side, each of seven (I think) levels houses a different family, ala condos, and each family has their own story. It’s set in the 1940’s, and there is a character named Francis Llewellyn Wiggins; Beyond that, I don’t know much about it at all.

Next summer, after Seasons wraps up and my surgery (see below), I plan to write a fun departure from deep dark secrets, One for the Price of Two. Twins Elizabeth and Meredith are so identical their parents can’t even tell them apart.

Facebook Live

There is no logical reason this should intimidate me so—I’m an actress for goodness sake! I’ve been on stage before a live audience, for crying out loud! Why, then, does the thought of going live, or even doing a video blog, make me so nervous? It just.don’t.make.no.sense. LOL

Nerves and intimidation aside, I will broach this new format this year, though not likely til summer. And I shall conquer it!

All in the Family

Earlier this year, a friend suggested I start a GoFundMe campaign to get my license and a car, which I did. Got my license, but I still need that car…

Again with the malaise of RA… and the busyness of the holidays and the insaneness of this series, I have yet to view the tutorial. With Book 3 nearing completion, and just the one book remaining in this series, the tutorial stands a chance of actually getting viewed!

Manifesto and Author Tag

The manifesto short version is,

“Stories for Christians to see or remember the ugly effects of the lies of the enemy, and for unbelievers to see the beauty of the Truth of the Word of God.”

And my author tag:

“the battle for identity, one story at a time.”

FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – LUKE CHAPTER 2

Luke 2  (NKJV)

Christ Born of Mary

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Glory in the Highest

8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.
