Day 26: 31 Days of Free Book Marketing #marketing

I’ll confess, today’s task will take longer than one day. At least, I hope it does. But you can definitely start plotting it.

The idea is to write a short story (or even a novella, if you’re feeling adventurous) that relates to your book but does not require reading the full length novels to enjoy. It can be about a side character, or maybe something that happened in the past to the main character.

The important elements is that it can stand alone, and that it carries the same style and voice...

Day 25: 31 Days of Free Book Marketing #bookmarketing

Pictures are worth a thousand words or some such nonsense, right?

Pinterest seems to think so, anyway.

Today’s task is to make a Pinterest board dedicated to your book, then pin some relevant images. Character “casting” is a fun place to start, but you can also pin pictures of cities the characters visited, landscapes similar to your made-up world, items or imagery that have the same feel, outfits worn, weapons used, pets owned, etc.

This task will take only as long as you can resist browsing th...

Day 24: 31 Days of Free Book Marketing #authors

Wattpad is a website dedicated to sharing novels. Some authors use it as their primary platform, but everyone can use it as part of their marketing strategy.

Sign up for a Wattpad account and then post as many chapters as you want from your book. Consider posting a scene at a time instead of a full chapter. Some authors like to space them out to keep readers coming back, such as posting one scene a day for a certain number of days.

While it’s a good idea to try to connect via Wattpad itself by...

Day 23: 31 Days of Free Book Marketing #bookreviews

Book reviews aren’t necessarily about trying to convince a reader that your book is good; they are meant to help a reader decide if it’s going to fit their tastes. This is one reason why the occasional bad review isn’t a terrible thing. A well-written, fair critical review will help keep away readers who wouldn’t enjoy that type of story anyway.

Rumor says reviews will also encourage Amazon to recommend your book.

So today’s task is look at your current reviews on Amazon and round up to the nex...

Day 22: 31 Days of Free Book Marketing #bookpromo

Blog interviews can be a great way to encourage readers to check out your books. The interviews can be about you, or they can be written as if one of your characters is being interviewed.

either case, it’s important that the interview answers use a similar voice. For example, if you write humor, try to be funny in your answers. And if your character is snarky in the book, then a little snark in the interview would be appropriate.

The point of the interview isn’t so much to really answer the que...

Removing Naughty Scenes Does Not a YA Make #amwriting

It’s pretty well known that people have mixed opinions about adult scenes in entertainment. Some insist on it in their novels; others skim those scenes or flat-out refuse to read books with explicit naughtiness. So I wasn’t surprised by the varied feedback concerning all the “doin’ it” in my novel, SUMMONED. What I was surprised by, though, was the reason many people requested a copy without it: so they could recommend the book to their teenagers.

I had to give this some thought.

SUMMONED was...

Day 20: 31 Days of Free Book Marketing #marketing

We previously talked about creating a blogger media kit for your book. Today, you’re going to need it to schedule a book blast.

A book blast is a simple post containing information about your book which is posted on a certain date by multiple bloggers. Some companies offer to arrange blasts for a fee, but you can schedule at least a small one if you have a social media presence.

Follow the steps below:

Choose a date for the blast, preferably at least a month ahead.
Decide if you’re going to inclu...
