Jason Shiga had a quote i liked about the role of criticism in comics: "What I want to know most is how it made you feel, followed by a bit of analysis. Nothing fancy even. Just say that Black Hole was about the fear of herpes and call it a review." Is the

hmmm. I feel like what gets me most interested in work is the details of it — the panel to panel of it. I’m so much less interested in the overall plot of something than what they do on each page of it.

Something I find frustrating is when reviewers claim confusion at a work ” I have no idea what’s going on” feels like a cop out to me. If that’s a failure of the work it’s worth talking about~~but if not then it just feels lazy. I assume that a lot of that is readers getting trained in one style of comics.

I’ve been thinking recently about how working for corporate comics could be bad in the sense of it affecting your storytelling style. There’s certainly exceptions. Like my manga bro, Emma Rios was able to make her style work on Spider-man comics.— so maybe it’s not as much of a thing. but I could see subtlety being beaten out of work in areas like superhero comics or Shonen manga. where the reader is expected to get told everything.

but yeah, I think there’d be as many ways to review a comic as ways to make comics.

First is of FFXIV characters, second is a scene from Terry Pratchett’s Soul Music.
